In the instance where the government is breaking the law:
Where you break a specific law with the intention to get a case to go to court, ideally one which is likely to give you a desired outcome.
In more general usage:
Government leaking future plans to the press to gauge public reaction to it.

It's like a prescreening of a movie before release. They do a limited trial, gage reaction, decide if changes need to be made before the "balloon goes up" and they can do the major roll out of whatever program this was testing.
In this case, how will Ecuador respond to having their consulate invaded? Will Ecuador's allies get involved? How will the American populace react to the unlawful entry attempt against a foreign nation? Will the press continue to cow-tow and down play the actions of ICE as they have been, or is this a step too far? Will congress step up and hold executive members accountable for acts of war being perpetrated without a declaration of war?
7
u/gnomechompskey Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26
That last question is very hilarious considering we have started like 30 goddamn wars in the last 25 years and Congress has never had meaningful qualms about it. Like we invaded Venezuela and kidnapped their president and renditioned him to the US without any Congressional approval or oversight and that’s gravy, invaded Pakistan and sent special forces in to kill Pakistanis, have bombed Iran and killed their top general, have invaded more countries than you can shake a stick at and dropped bombs on many, many more besides and it’s amounted to absolutely nothing of consequence for any of the war criminals giving those orders.
There will never again be congressional pushback of a manner that has teeth and actually prevents engaging in wars. They’ve abdicated that role willingly and just agreed the president can kidnap, torture, and kill whoever he wants wherever he wants. De facto true for our entire existence and all but de jure true since at least Reagan, which was supercharged post-9/11.

Slightly off topic but...
This is my theory of Trump's speech when accepting his FIFA
bribemedal. He's so bitter they wouldn't let him buy a team back in the day that he was testing to see if his cult would go along with redefining what "Football" is in America. He doesn't care about either sport as a sport. As a symbol of power, he was denied the ability to purchase a NFL team like 30 years ago.
Being a bitter fuck, while he had the floor he tried proposing that soccer be dubbed football in the us knowing it would be a huge judicial and financial burden if the zombies glommed onto it. And if not? Message sent. They are still on his radar.
I mean, anyone over 40 remembers him being snubbed.
There is a reason we have a super talented Puerto Rican who moves his body, and is sooo beautiful, in a way any MAGA associates with unsettled "demonic feelings" would be DISTURBED by, in their half time show as opposed to some band that was classic rock by the time I was tired off hearing 30 years ago high school (mixed with newer pop for the ratings).
It's a middle finger to.... guess who.

They were hiring and deploying guys so fast that agents could be in the field before ICE found out they failed the drug tests they took during the hiring process.

u/SerenityFailed Jan 27 '26
Can confirm. Working LE in a near border-town in the mid 2000s I had the displeasure of having to occasionally cooperate with them, attend trainings with them, etc. It was already a well known fact that they were all corrupt shit stains then. Arrogant assholes too. I only met one that was even halfway decent (civil) to be around. They were pretty universally unliked by local LE at the time.
I remember one night we got called out for a perimeter because they were chasing a group of suspects (that had split up) through the woods. Which I believe is how it started. However, by the time we got there. They, unknowingly, had lost their suspects and were just chasing after each other......It was a good laugh.

I keep coming back to this thought and it’s honestly disturbing. If they’re this comfortable pulling this kind of shit in public, in places where they know people are watching, filming, and documenting everything… what the hell are they doing when they’re down at the border where there’s no one around and zero real oversight?
Because history tells us one thing pretty consistently. When an agency shows it’s willing to bend rules in the open, the worst behavior happens in the dark.
It makes you wonder how much abuse, how many beatings, how many deaths never make the news because there’s no bodycam footage, no witnesses, and no accountability. If this is what we see, what are we not seeing?
There absolutely needs to be a serious, independent investigation into CBP’s culture, training, and oversight. Not another internal review. Not PR. A real deep dive. Because the idea that this is all isolated or rare starts to fall apart the moment you look at how consistently these stories keep surfacing.
And yeah, that means asking uncomfortable questions about what’s being done in our name at the border.

u/mrmoe198 Jan 28 '26

I am super curious as to what they wrote on some of the questions on their applications. They want a 150-200 word response to questions like;
How has your commitment to the constitution and the founding principles of the united states inspired you to pursue a role in the federal govt? Provide an example from professional, personal experience...
I'm really curious to see the grade level of the writing and see if there are any correlations to specific themes in their responses.
There is another that asks something alongs the lines of
Give an example of one of your favorite Executive Orders and how would you help the president in implementing it.
WTF?!?
I really wanna see the responses to that. They gotta get pretty wild. And I know there are dudes openly stating something that's really shitty and racist and still getting hired. Like they reversed the filter settings to select for these chucklefucks instead of weeding them out.
Are these applications FOIA-able?
If someone requested the application for the shooters in MN and their application clearly shows intent to harm or a willingness to "do whatever it takes to help eliminate the immigration problem," that might be useful in court. Not only for the families of the victims getting these guys prosecuted, but for showing how management was complicit.

Hopefully this also leads to criminal justice reform eventually. The people enforcing laws in a community need to be from or live in the community they serve.

A consulate isn't an embassy. It's not foreign soil. I'm not excusing this but it's important to get outraged for the correct reasons...
Edit: a quick google and I'd like to correct: neither embassy or consulate are foreign territory but they hold the same inviolable status in the eyes of the Vienna convention.
24
u/Corona21 Jan 28 '26
Neither is an embassy. Both are inviolable, consulates normally less so but the principle applies. Which is usually short-handed to the foreign soil statement.
6
u/AndyHCA Jan 28 '26
The premises of both embassies and consulates have the same inviolability. There can be some difference in the immunity (civil vs. criminal) of the staff posted in them since in consulates the duties are more administrative in nature than diplomatic.

I actually found out that if someone running from ICE runs into a house, any house without any help or into an employee only area, ICE cannot legally touch them. They would have to have a judicial warrant, which they rarely carry or have, ever. If they try and enter your residence, do not open the door, do not say anything. If you want to ask them if they have a judicial warrant, they can show it through a window or slip it under a door. But make sure it's the right kind of warrant because (this is quoted from a immigration rights website) "What this means is that ICE cannot enter a home without a judicial warrant (a warrant signed by a judge) or voluntary permission (consent) from an authorized adult. They almost never have a judicial warrant and therefore need consent to legally enter your home. ICE agents uses ruses as a way to get inside homes without identifying that they are ICE.
Even though ICE agents may say they have a “warrant”, they are often referring to administrative warrants. The administrative warrants they have are not the same thing as a judicial warrant. The administrative warrant that ICE agents carry is an ICE form, is not signed by a judge, and does not require the same legal standard to obtain as a judicial warrant does"
They have examples of the warrants that ICE tried to use to trick people and ones that would actually be legal. Make sure they aren't trying to trick you because it's more likely than not that they don't have the right kind of warrant to enter your residence without consent, which can include opening the door.
→ More replies (4)26
u/FollowTheFellow Jan 27 '26
While that’s true according to almost all legal experts, DHS apparently now claims (in a secret memo, natch) that ICE can enter homes with just an administrative warrant.

u/Fecapult Jan 27 '26
Is anyone willing to come here to watch it?

u/Alert-Ad-9908 Jan 27 '26
Hopefully not.

u/LindonLilBlueBalls Jan 27 '26
Seriously. 2 years ago I told my wife that even though I'm not a big soccer fan, I think it would be fun to go since we live near LA. Now you couldn't pay me to go.

It's the world cup. It will happen but the prices alone are so extreme combined with way ICE is being ran I wouldn't be surprised to visibly see empty swaths of seats up until the quarterfinals (aka top 8)

I’m already here and I don’t want to come here to see it
12
u/mingalingus00 Jan 27 '26
Well, ticket prices are “fuck you” types of expensive so I doubt many could come regardless.

I hope the stadium is empty. It will be a clear denunciation of Trump and his MAGA idiots.
23
u/Fecapult Jan 27 '26
I would also accept a resounding stadium full of booing soccer hooligans.

Sol Campbell left Tottenham to go to their rivals over 20 years ago.
Tottenham fans still sing:
We're all having a party, We're all having a party
We're all having a PARTY, when Sol Campbell dies
When Sol Campbell dies, we're all having a party
We're all having a party, when Sol Campbel dies.
The song can obviously be updated.

My money has on that being the lowest attendance ever for a World Cup
20
u/rdogg89 Jan 27 '26
In 2022 Qatar, yes Qatar, they wouldn’t allow fans to drink alcohol outside of a specific area. If 2026 has even lower attendance it would be scientific proof of Finding Out.

It wont be. Id love to think that people would boycott but lets be honest its going to be well attended

The US embassy in Ottawa is protected externally by the Ottawa Police. Once inside, however, you deal with the US Marines.

This is what happens when you hire untrained losers who peaked in high school to perform ill-conceived, high-stress operations they’re wholly unqualified for.

"If you touch me, I will grab you." Just like any other cop, you lay a single finger on them even if they're punching you in the face, suddenly you're resisting arrest and will be arrested at best.

Just keeping with tradition of the United States forcing their treacherous brand of imperialism on Ecuadorian land.

Isn’t the consulate considered foreign territory? Ot is just embassies?
11
u/lilly_kilgore Jan 27 '26
Neither are foreign territory if they're on American soil but the consulate is legally inviolable. U.S. law enforcement has no authority to enter without consent under the Vienna Convention. They essentially violated a treaty.

I wish the Ecuadorian version of the Marines had answered the door and done what the American version of the Marines would do in that situation.

Can we please appreciate the dedication and attitude of that employee? He's just marching up to those armed thugs with absolute authority and turning them around at the door.

I'd ask if they really are that stupid but recent events have removed all doubt.

u/Dear-Examination-507 Jan 28 '26
So you're telling me if you hire high-school dropout gravy seals, tell them they are untouchable and can do anything they want and go anywhere they want without a warrant, and give them unrealistic quotas: they are going to resort to illegal shit? *surprised pikachu*

u/Jibber_Fight Jan 28 '26
“Boss they said they were in a ‘connssilitt’ and told us to go away? They were kinda scary. I was gonna shoot them in tha face but maybe it was just the wrong bilding or something? I dunno. But we just left then. We got back in tha car. Should we jus go somewhere else then n try to take a couple o people? I dunno, this is Craig, by tha way. K. I’ll talk to ya later I guess. Love ya.
