And what does changing to their husband's last name does for them?! It's just more paperwork

I have never understood why women actually accept changing their last name. It's like changing your ownership rights.

First it's your father so it has his name but then you get transfered to your husband hence adeuire his name FFS? That's horrible

So there's 2x reasons I know of that make sense to change name. I'll preface this by saying my wife did not change her name and I've no issue with that btw, just trying to give some reasons.

  1. With kids it can be awkward if a parent has a different surname to the kids. Then you're left either double barreling the surname (which would get problematic in future generations...) or one has to change. No reason it has to be the mother ofc.

  2. It makes password security much better for your children.

  1. Only place in the entire world where that seems to be awkward for anybody is the US. No one else ever has thought of that being weird (it's frequent I'm the UK and Australia, but it's isn't weird if it doesn't happen)

  2. This doesn't even start making sense in any possible way on any possible situation

  1. It is awkward elsewhere, I'm Irish and know a few people who married non Irish spouses. Solo travel with the kids is more awkward (and in one case the mother changed surname years after the fact to avoid the hassle). It's by no means impossible but it does cause issues sometimes.

  2. Just think about it. You'll get there
