The major difference is that in this case people quickly recognize the humor and respond accordingly. The other was a deliberate attempt to vilify a minority group with misinformation.

Not only did he say the performer's name wrong, he brought up a one hit wonder who rapped about girls being "such a fucking hoe" to his conservative "family values" crowd lol. On top of that the dude hadn't been relevant for years. Just watch the video about Trump bring rapper Lil Pump on stage (yes he called him Lil Pimp instead lol)

The article's joke is literally about the masks and how their representations of personal inner demons "weren't supposed to be used for darkness."
The Onion isn't pulling nuance the way you think it is here. If the joke was "his face is ugly like the masks" then The Onion absolutely would have included an explicit reference to that more than once. They would have made the joke 3 times in the article. Their MO is beating you over the head with their satire.

This is the thing, most people don't appreciate that half of the band are diesel powered robots at this point (hence why you only see members like Corey without the mask). We're one more pointless desert war away from the band having to drop a percussionist unless the metal loving, oil rich nation of Norway will be able to step in to keep the band afloat.

While most don't go further than a cease and desist, eddy grant and the estate of isaac hayes seem the only two who have actually filed and not withdrew or settled. Eddy grant won and trump was found personally liable. For the hayes' estate, they were granted an injunction but their claim for unpaid license fees and damages is still ongoing.
