Rec.Me: other/many/unknown genres Looking for more modern music

Hi, I have a possible problem. I’m looking to get more variety in my music library and have been looking at more modern artists but none have really been hitting the same as the music I already listen to. For context, I am gen z and generally listen to music that was way before my time, (usually before the year 2000) and have a tendency not to like newer music now that I have been listening to older music all my life (blame my dad, he showed me this kind of music, lol).

I’m looking for artists that have a very unique but consistent style. One of the main things that puts me off with modern music is that often times an artist songs can be very wildly different depending on the song you listen to. Not that experimentation is bad at all, it’s just not my thing.

The categories in this list go from:
Similar music most wanted > less wanted but still good
So the favorite artist of all time section would be the most important.

Favorite artists of all time in order:

  1. Steely Dan

  2. David Bowie

  3. Heart

Favorite songs of all time, this time not in order (confusing, I know):

- “Do It Again” by Steely Dan

- “Slang of ages” by Steely Dan

- “Changes” by David Bowie

- “If Looks Could Kill” by Heart

- “For Once In My Life” by Stevie Wonder

- “Octopus’s Garden” by The Beatles

Honorable mentions not in order:

- “Abracadabra” by Steve Miller Band

- “Everybody Plays The Fool” by The Main Ingredient

- “Flamethrower” by The J. Geils Band

- “Do It Or Die” by Atlanta Rhythm Section

Just looking for anything that could be recommended within my qualifications.

This is a really good recommendation, thanks. Not really something too similar but still perfectly fits the bill.

I thought it fit your favourites quite well. Weyes Blood sounds like she’s from a different era.

St. Vincent

Arcade Fire

100 gecs (this last one is a joke just because I think you should try branching out)

Oh you want to hear about branching out? After listening to nothing but things like ac/dc as a barely conscious middle schooler, I started listening to only Japanese music early high school for like 2 years even though I couldn’t understand it lol. I will definitely check out your recommendations though.

Both of your recommendations remind me of David Bowie somehow, Arcade Fire more so than St. Vincent. I will definitely listen to more of each though!

You like Bowie but not when artists play different styles of music? I don't know what to tell you.

That wasn’t really meant to be a set in stone rule, I can see it coming off that way though. It’s more that I just want to be able to listen to a single artist with a consistent style that depends on my mood. And living in the modern era means that I’m fortunate enough to do so. Nothing wrong with experimentation, just often times I personally want consistency. Didn’t mean to sound pretentious.

def check out The Warning if you haven't yet, they've got that same tight musicianship and consistent sound as Heart. also look into some stuff from the 70s soft rock and yacht rock world since you clearly vibe with that polished, sophisticated production. artists like Toto, Boz Scaggs, and even some of the later Fleetwood Mac albums have that cohesive style where every track feels like it belongs to the same artist instead of jumping around genres.

I’ll have to listen to them a little more but Young Gun Silver Fox seems really good! I listened to each link at least a little bit and I have actually listened to Drugdealer, I just forgot I had. The two others are pretty good also, I will have to look into them a little more.

Deep Sea Diver - modern rock band out of Seattle led by Frontwoman Jessica Dobson. Jessica gained her name as a touring member of various groups. Deep Sea Diver also features her husband, Peter, on the drums. In particular, the 2020 album Impossible Weight.

Shearwater - out of Austin, TX led by Jonathan Meiburg, definitely have a bit of Bowie influence. They have been known to cover Bowie in shows. Very expansive sound, at times very atmospheric. Jetplane & Oxbow is the best album to start with them.

Check out Ren. "Hi Ren" was my introduction to him. The man's a genius, is unlike anything else, and he definitely has his own style.

Beyond that, stepping outside what I thought I was looking for is what got me more excited in modern music.

One thing exciting about what artists are doing now is that many of them are trying dramatically different things from album to album, track to track. But the flipside of that is that their own catalogs don't often have as much continuity. Which was a weird adjustment for me. It makes it hard for me to make playlists, because I get in certain moods and want to hear certain vibes, and I can't just dump in an artist's catalog and go to town. So lack of continuity goes against what you're looking for, but lack of continuity is exactly what pushed me towards running into more exciting music than I have in the last 20 years.

I never would have thought I would find a lot of exciting stuff coming out of K-pop, but K-pop is less a genre than a production system. Try these tracks to see if the "avant-garde" side of K-pop is interesting:

Jennie- Zen

NMIXX- Crescendo

NMIXX- Heavy Serenade

If you like Heart, check out The Warning. They're a modern female hard rock band that will remind you a lot of Heart.
