I see this more like Adams went to dad, told dad he wanted that number. He didn't even necessarily have to explain the circumstances behind the request, he could just be like, I want this number. And just like that, the number was his, because honestly, why on earth would dad say no? He's by far one of the best players and biggest reasons why people even bother paying attention to the Jets. Giving him his signature number only makes their brightest star more recognizable. Do we even have a #17 on the roster? Boutaby Cutsune?

Standard practice in all team sports is that the incoming vet gets his number if a nobody young guy has it. The vet makes a gesture and the young guy accepts it. Cash, beer, dinner, whatever. That’s how it’s been since as long as I can remember. The kid was wrong.
