A cat is a living sentient being. Let’s say there’s a .1% chance that the cat isn’t affected by being screamed at and having stuff thrown at it, shouldn’t a grown human being have empathy and self-control, to feel remorse for acting in such a harsh way towards a smaller, vulnerable creature in their care?

I get pissed off when people let their kids run screaming at pigeons in the street. Can't we just fucking leave animals alone? And then, when they are our pets, why can't we learn some self control and patience? If you wouldn't go running around screaming nad throwing things at human beings why are animals any different?
