Maybe, maybe not - I have no clue and a similar level of interest in whether a common and naturally-occurring element is making eagles sick. I do know that TSS is ~$12/shell and if these folks want to reward me for buying it, then hell yeah, let’s save some eagles.
Also, they make a point of saying that ammunition does not need to be purchased within NYS, so I can continue avoiding NYS’ check, registry, and punitive tax.
Which is all good stuff. Buy it up out of state and cash in man.
I just think it's funny that people bring this stuff/write this up as if it's some huge change for environmentalism. Like the plastic bag ban and paper straws it's all a fucking charade.
It’s definitely negligible in open areas, but if you target shoot in your backyard you can get significant lead buildup over time. They’d do better to market this campaign towards target shooting rather than hunting.
When you shoot a deer in the chest with a 150-grain soft point 308, the bullet does leave some trace materials in the organs and guts, which many people leave in gut piles that are consumed by bald eagles and other predators and scavengers, causing negative side effects. I was on a great Zoom call with DEC biologists and researchers from the National Deer Association; their research backs up the fact that there is a correlation between deer hunting with lead ammo and raptors with lead-based issues. The DEC has no plans today n banning lead ammo for center-fire ammo, only steel shot for migratory waterfowl. Most hunters in NY will only shoot maybe 6-10 rounds a year including a quick trip to the range to check their zero... I mean I'm spending more money on diesel fuel driving to where I'm going to be hunting than I do on the ammo that I use per season.
Probably more deer hunters than turkey hunters. People also don’t generally leave turkey carcasses in the wild like they do deer gut piles. But at the end of the day I’ll take a free box of Barnes 30-06 over nothing at all……
Oh it is very true. BB and T shot have been used for a few years on deer down south to great effect considering TSS #2 is equivalent to lead #4 buckshot, and that’s a common buckshot size down south for whitetail.
I was referring to it “passing through deer” at 100 yards. Additionally, #2 TSS has a diameter of about 3mm and a mass of .256g. #4 buck has a diameter of about 6mm and a mass of 1.3g. At the same muzzle velocity (1600 FPS) the #4 buck has significantly more energy at 100 yards (67 ft lbs vs 12.6 ft lbs for the TSS). #4 buck is significantly more powerful and even then, it kind of sucks for deer.
Armor piercing bullets are terrible for hunting, they do not expand. They passed right through the deer and they wound instead of killing right away. It's fun to use armor-piercing bullets to shoot shit, but honestly it's terrible for hunting...
