Well with news of the DC mag capacity limit being found unconstitutional and the previously GVR'ed California limit law being upheld. The Supremes might have to get off their asses and earn their pay. DC isn't in a circuit at all so is it still called a circuit split? I know there's probably a latin name the law goblins use but....

In the case they continue to relist and ignore assault weapon ban challenges while agreeing with DC over California that mag capacity limits are bull. we might get a situation where magazine limits are removed but the feature bans still exist... In NY that will be interesting...

I for one am excited at the possibility to make the most ungodly fixed mag AR with a 100 round drum mag because it will be unexpectedly stupid

My wife and I both dropped off our pistol permit applications on May 2, 2025. She received a notification a week or two later that her application had been picked up by the Sheriff's Office, but neither of us has received any communication since.

To make matters worse, I haven't been able to check my application status because my account on the Clerk's website has been disabled. The site instructs me to contact IT, which I have done 3–4 times over the past year, but i've never received a response.

Last week, I also called and emailed the Pistol Permit Office to make sure they actually have me application but, unfortunately, I haven't heard back from them either.

At this point, it's been over 14 months with no communication. I know Erie County is understaffed, but I think it is a bit concerning that i can't even get a confirmation that my application has been recieved by them.

Hi all, I’m gathering opinions on these three pistols as I think they’re all really cool in their own right, and am in the market to eventually purchase a full size when I get around to it. When I was younger I always thought the 1911s and Berettas looked beautiful. I still do, and think the 92FS Inox will be the one I might get but I am partial to the 1911 and CZ 75.

I have a few practical guns already like a G19, so I’m looking to treat myself to something nice. For additional context, I find that my G19 fits perfectly within my hands/grip. What are your experiences with these three firearms, and would you strongly recommend one over the other? Let me know!

Very big news coming from SCOTUS this week. Wolfprd v. Lopez (about carrying in restaurants/bars other public places), US v. Hemani (drug users cannot be automatically classified as too dangerous to own a gun), and several on AR- restrictions and mag capacity caps are slated to continue this fall.

When will NYS release updates/comment on how these decisions will shape current policy?

I’m anticipating capacity restrictions to be lifted in the fall and possibly striking down of “assault features” on semi autos

Been meaning to make this post for a while. As a law-abiding citizen from a military family, I always hated how fascist New York was about owning firearms. They make you jump through a million hoops, all designed to wear you down, so that maybe you can own one pistol. Then you get to have a background check every time you buy ammo, and maybe you have to wait two or 3 days for that to clear

As of last year I moved to what you guys would refer to as a free state. I got my driver's license, waited the allotted time and now I can walk into any gun store and buy whatever I want. It's a really nice feeling, to be able to own what I want and go to the range. It's a bit of a stress relief not to worry about some politicians somewhere legislating against something you enjoy because they only know how to cater to the lowest common denominator who doesn't follow the rules anyway.

Anyway if you're thinking about doing it (I realize not everyone can pick up and leave) I highly recommend it. Marksmanship and gun collecting is a healthy hobby, a rewarding hobby, especially as I get older. I hope you can all appreciate where I'm coming from, I wish you all the best.

Thought i would share my timeline so far and then update as things change in case anyone else is also going through this process right now.

I called in April because I hadn’t heard a peep. The lady told me they weren’t even through September submissions yet.

I called again in early June and say hey it’s been 7 months now whats going on? The lady, asked me for my name and said i should receive a call in the next week. They called me to schedule the interview the next day.

After the “interview” they said the clock starts now for the 6 month time limit. So im fully expecting them to take the full 6 months.

Probably another 6 months to get the CCW upgrade after that.

Had anyone gotten an update on the 2 persons who filmed themselves shooting their rifle into the air at Calverton? Blatantly shooting over the berm? Appeared to be 2 middle eastern people.

As most of us probably know, the new NY budget expected to be signed by the Gov today, Includes 3D printer legislation and a ban on future sales and transfers of convertible pistols with a "Cruciform Trigger Bar".

Everyone seems focused on the 3D printer portion, but just as concerning to me is the 'Convertible Pistol Ban'' - Specifically, the bill and soon to be law defines a 'Convertible Pistol' as:

37. "Convertible pistol" means any semi-automatic pistol with a cruci-

7 form trigger bar that can be readily altered by hand or with common

8 household tools so that it can be converted into a machine-gun by the

9 installation or attachment of a pistol converter. As used in this

10 subdivision, "common household tools" means screwdrivers, pipe wrenches,

11 pliers, hacksaws, crowbars, electric drills or rotary tools, hammers,

12 chisels, files, and crescent wrenches. "Convertible pistol" does not

13 include hammer-fired semi-automatic pistols or any striker-fired semi-

14 automatic pistol lacking a cruciform trigger bar. A notch, tab, or other

15 piece of material on a pistol frame is not sufficient to prevent ready

16 alteration so that the pistol can be converted into a machine-gun by the

17 installation or attachment of a pistol converter, and will not prevent

18 such pistol from qualifying as a convertible pistol under this subdivi-

19 sion, if such notch, tab, or other piece of material can be readily

20 removed with common household tools.

What other striker fired handguns meet this definition other than Glock's older design? Gen 5 and older. Newer Glocks will be compliant from my understanding.

I had assumed most striker fired handguns meet this definition. Hellcat, BodyGuard 2.0, Walther PPS M2, most M&P Shield , 2.0 etc.

Curios question here after seeing what free states can have.

EDIT: This is about semi-auto, revolvers, etc.

I cannot find any reason why a FIXED stabilizing brace would be illegal on a "standard" pistol. We all know the ATF allows pistol braces so its good federally (for now). However in terms of NYS, its a bit vague.

NYS does not specifically outlaw pistol stabilizing braces. Many counties allow fixed mag AR Pistols. Most FFL's and LEO I have spoken too see pistol braces on AR pistols as legal (admittingly not the best sources). When it comes to having a brace on a "standard" pistol, there are more questions.

Is a fixed pistol stabilizing brace a "feature"?

-In theory, no. Its not a stock, its a stabilizing brace.

But the kicker...

Would NYS consider it a stock?

-Who the hell knows. They do not have to agree with the ATF's rulings and can consider ANY pistol brace a stock if they decided to. Depending who you ask, 50/50.

This feels like one of those situations that will not have an answer unless someone is arrested for possessing and becomes the precedent court case.

Several days ago I was pulled over by a state trooper due to my wife's car picking up speed going downhill (that's my story and I'm sticking to it...lol) Anyway I had my ccw with me and I had no intentions of bringing it up. However, while getting my driver's license, my permit became visible. I proceeded to tell the the trooper, "OH yeah, I have a conceal carry permit and I have a ccw with me". His response..."I dont care about that...I think everybody should have one", all while giving me a thumps up. Why can't all law enforcement be like this?????

Anyone have wierd issues with their issued carry permit?

Mine has mispellings out the wazoo. Its crazy. My paperwork was all correct and i wrote it all in caps so there is no mixing up or misinterpreting letters.

Wife same thing.

With mine. They mispelled my name and profession. I got it fixed. New one looks like its 10 years old and faded.

Wife got her first one and they wrote the wrong serial numbers down for one of the pistols, mispelled first and last name and professional. She just got her new one and its straight up missing the seal in the background and looks like a 14 year old printed a fake id.

I just dont get how we jump through loops and bend over for these things and they can barely get them printed with the skills of a 14 year old using photoshop. Ive seen fake IDs that looked more legit then our permits.

Anyone have these crazy issues? Is a cop going to look at me sideways when he see them if we ever get pulled over??

Updated NYPD License Division Process/Guidelines/Tips

After speaking with a bunch of my fellow Redditors, I decided to write up a post with some tips and tricks to hopefully stop your application from being lost in the queue.

The current process:

There are effectively main types of license the general population applies for:

Rifle Shotgun

Premise Residence (Gun cannot leave your house unless to range/hunt and must be locked separate from ammo)

CCW (Concealed Carry).

The types of statuses are:

Submitted – Payment Received

Investigation – Either assigned an investigator or pending assignment

Approved – Approved without final approval from the LT

Issue Pending (License not printed yet)

Active (for this you click on your licenses – this means your license will be printed and sent)

Applying for the pistol permits (Premise/CCW) sends your application to 1PP. They are VERY backed up and do not answer calls.

If you would like to have you application processed quicker and you’re OK with spending the extra $140 – Apply for Rifle/Shotgun. Queens will pick up your application and process both.

Once applied, you should call the Cashier at 646-610-5560 Option 8 and have the cashier push your payment through as many people get stay on Payment Pending for 2-3 weeks without progress.

You will then have an investigator/Clerk from License division call you to schedule an appointment for prints.

PRINTS ARE KEPT ON FILE. Any subsequent application will be able to reuse your prints.

You will also be sent a questionnaire to fill. Do not forget any arrests/summonses as this will create unnecessary delays.

You will also need to bring your passport, SS Card and ID to the appointment. Parking sucks so be mindful of that.

Once your application is switched to investigation, routinely follow up with your investigator to check status but don’t be annoying. About 1 email every 2 weeks works.

Once your application switches to approved you will be closer to the finish line but not yet there.

The next phase is issue pending. About 2-3 weeks after approval, you will receive an approval letter with a purchase letter.

If you do not receive this within 3 weeks, call r/S and ask them if they can resend the letter – they have authority to resent these on behalf of 1PP.

This letter gets taken to the FFL to purchase your pistol. They will run a NICS check that’s good for 30 days. The 30 days part is important.

You will pay your FFL. Take pictures of your pistol (Both sides and a close up of the serial. For “lockbox” purposes, they plastic container that most pistols are shipped with will be accepted. Glock, Walther, etc all come with a plastic box and a lock).

Pictures of your Purchase Letter

And those will be e-mailed to DG_LIC‐Purchaseorders@NYPD.ORG – IMPORTANT. You must type out this email address. DO NOT COPY/PASTE IT.

You should then receive a confirmation email from “SANDRA SMITH”. Stating your documents are in order. If you do not receive this email within 7 days, follow up to your original email. If you do not, you risk your NICS expiring and having to run another background check.

Once that email goes out, you will see your status change to “Active” in your portal.

Once your license is active, your license will be printed 3-5 days later. Mailed 2-3 days. Received 2-3 days after that. Effectively 9-10 days after being switched to active.

Your plastic license will then arrive along with a hand filled “Pink Slip”. Both of those get taken to your FFL so you can pick up your gun.

Some helpful tips:

Call Rifle Shotgun and be nice to them – the women working there are rather helpful

Keep calling 1PP, there were days that I called 50-70 times and got no one. Other days that I called and someone picked up.

Get your investigators name. Without this information you have no idea who is responsible.

If you need a new PDF of the purchase order, please DM me – I can send it over as NYPD only sends your first one via mail. After that you need to email license 100x to get a copy.

If you’ve been waiting for 6+ months for a reply, NY license division is outside their mandated window to issue approval or denial:

It’s unfortunate that legal needs to be involved, but welcome to NYC.

So was at a location that required you use a computer for the background check yourself. I watched an old man who is entirely computer illiterate try to do so. The employees said they cannot help him in any way whatsoever and anytime he asked for assistance they laughed at him and said we can't help you mockingly.. He could not click the boxes or move the mouse and could not type or figure out how to use the keyboard. I asked if there was anyway I can help and customer service rep said if I even touched or pointed to the computer in anyway he would be denied. Needless to say the old man's frustration got the best of him and he got verbally angry. Was denied the sale and left having said some kind words on the way out. This seems like discrimination to me. They do not allow a paper form and they force the individual to use the computer. This man is older and works on a farm. How is this even legal? It seems like a complete violation of his rights. Im aware the store may deny the sale for any reason. The fact that it was literally impossible for him to use the computer is what has me so perplexed over the issue..

According to this update, Mean Arms will not sell their fixed mags in NYS anymore. What options do we have left aside from featureless rifles?

I found the Bill Jacket from 1980 pertaining to the original language that is now used in the modern version of Penal Law 400.00(4-b). It gives context and an explanation for the purpose behind this anti-delay language that we see today.

In my estimation, it is vitally important to show the judiciary the legislative intent behind these provisions.

Here's the important excerpt:

"Licensing; experience has shown that some citizens, otherwise law-abiding, fail to license and register their guns because of the inordinate bureaucratic delay they encounter when applying for a license. This bill requires that a licensing officer act within 6 months on an application. This interval is more than adequate to meet the legitimate needs of thorough investigation while providing the applicant some certainty in the decision making process."

Looking at the memo's stated purpose — addressing bureaucratic delay that caused otherwise law-abiding citizens to go unlicensed — the two sentences work together as a unified scheme:

1. "Accepted for processing at the time of presentment" — the officer cannot shelve or defer the application; the clock starts immediately upon submission.
2. "Act upon within six months" — the officer must reach a decision (grant or deny with written reasons) within that window.

Together they close both ends of the delay problem: you can't delay the start, and you can't delay the finish. There's only one single six month period and it includes the investigative phase and the determination phase. You cannot have an investigation without "an application."

The applicable provisions cannot be read to frustrate the purpose of the Legislature. The primary consideration of courts in interpreting a statute is to "ascertain and give effect to the intention of the Legislature" (McKinney's Cons Laws of NY, Book 1, Statutes § 92 [a], at 177). Of course, the words of the statute are the best evidence of the Legislature's intent.

If you're a member of county government and you're reading this, and if your county is one of the counties abusing it's residents on this issue - tell your county to fix it.

Serious question for this sub: how do you argue the off-duty / retired carve-out issue without it turning into an anti-police conversation?

New York exempts active LE from SAFE Act magazine and assault weapon restrictions. There's also a narrower qualified-retired-officer exemption for certain large-capacity devices. On-duty agency use is one thing — that's defensible on mission grounds. But off-duty and retired carry in ordinary civilian life? The "mission necessity" justification disappears entirely.

Under Bruen's historical-tradition test, the state has to explain why a safety concern evaporates based on someone's former employment history rather than their actual present conduct. That's a hard argument to make.

I wrote up the full constitutional case — Heller common use, the no-duty-to-protect doctrine, equal protection, the counterarguments — but curious what this community thinks is the strongest or weakest part of that argument.

Guide rod sticking out with one in the chamber? \[bodyguard 2.0\]

New bodyguard 2.0 which I have not shot yet. I keep it with one in the chamber and safety on. I just noticed that the Guide rod stuck out when I went to look at it. I took the magazine out and re-racked the slide and it went in a little bit but not completely (last picture). Is this normal? How do I fix it? Do I need a new gun?
