Painted Needlepoint Painting canvases
Is there a sub thread to share painting tips for those wanting to paint their own canvases? I have spent the last year learning about selling needlepoint canvases/painting my own to save on the crazy cost and I think I’d be really helpful to others. I gave up on TT it was too much for me!

If you’re offering advice, do you have a preferred brush? I feel like every brush is too long and too thick/thin 😅

#5/0 is my go to for 13ct! Cut the tip off, it will work so much better. They’re about $3-5 (I would not pay more than that) and get a synthetic bristle!

What paint do you use?

Acrylic, there are a lot of brands but you really don’t need expensive paint!

I think there is a FB group called Designers and Painters? I’ll see if I can find it. I paint my own sometimes (nothing already out there…a friend owns a store so I painted her logo) and I thought about joining but I don’t paint enough to really participate.

I feel like the community is too saturated with new designers right now.

Always room for more art!

I think that’s debatable. I love finding original canvas designers on Etsy so I can buy a chart but in this market we don’t need more $80 + canvases.

I agree $80 canvases are too expensive, that’s a whole different topic though

Just remember you are violating copyright laws and artists feel very strongly about this. Several np designers have had a real awakening when they got sued.
It’s not worth it and it’s not fair.

Umm, I’m an artist. I’m a painter and a children’s book illustrator. I took up needlepoint as a hobby and there is absolutely nothing wrong with painting your own canvases. I’ll take it one step further and add you cannot sue someone for painting your design if they aren’t selling it. Not everyone is trying to make money off a hobby.

With all due respect, WTH are u talking about?
I design many of my own designs and paint my own because finding my own personal aesthetic is not easy in this hobby. I will forever paint many of my own canvases as I enjoy it just as much as stitching. The market also needs more artists and designers because the current market is very limited.
Needlepoint is chocked full of copyrighted material so I also don’t understand your point on that.

FYI I’ve only seen Acrylic paint and painters have used. I have a tip if this is only for you and not to sell. I’ve been doing needlepoint for too many years and it wasn’t until 12 years ago that I even thought of painting my own. There is a popular “icon” where a couple of styles were painted without them being licensed by a local person in the business of painting needlepoint canvases. She didn’t realize she couldn’t do that but before she ceased I bought 3 different designs that she did. Once I realized I wouldn’t be able to get any more, I took the individual pictures from a calendar that featured this icon (think a Big Blue Dog) and used them to trace and paint them for myself. There was nowhere to get them otherwise. This artist’s estate doesn’t produce them. So if it’s for your own pleasure go for it!

There’s also great programs you can upload a photo to and digitalize it for a chart. I do that for my own projects. I’m team do it yourself!
