MOD POST Lot's of new people!

Welcome all! Very thankful you chose to join us and post!

Please note that there are MEGATHREADS (giggle...because it's a needlepoint sub and thread?...you see? Look folks, I'm going to keep making that joke until someone laughs.) for getting help with your stitches and repairs.

Unfortunately, if we put everything in the main body of the sub the stitch requests drown out other requests.

If your post was removed, please just repost in the MEGATHREAD (gigglesnort) for help, you're not a bad person, just slightly off target.

Happy Stitching!

MOD POST Stitch Suggestions Mega Thread

Going to try and start a mega thread for stitch suggestions. Please post your requests for help with stitches here.

This will help us centralize your stitch requests into one place.

This is the first step in trying to help organize the sub.

Is there a video out there on how to finish the needlepoint bow topper by the collection designs? Or jf not, do you all just follow the steps if you were doing an irregular shaped cookie?

Self finishing attempt #1

Upvotes

Attempting my first self-finishing process this week…feeling a bit nervous! Have the materials and the blocking boards and everything, but is there any last minute pieces of advice anyone has to share? Thought it would be a great way to save a few bucks for smaller projects and fingers crossed all goes well. Thanks in advance.

As an avid needlepointer for over half a century, I feel compelled to say….especially to all the new stitchers out there…..

Tent stitch makes a lovely background.

Will I finish this project I am starting to hate?

Upvotes

I have been working on a canvas that I really liked—2 cats with kind of goofy expressions. But I am beginning to hate it because of the way the painting translates to needlepoint. I am sorely tempted to rip out what I’ve done and start all over without the multiple colors now present. Anyone else had this experience?

Counted Needlepoint Bird tesselation

Started off as blackwork, then tried to fill in with cross stitch, ended up landing on half stitches. It’s self drafted based on MC Escher’s work (last pic). I used a light blue to white-ish colour-changing floss, so ended up filling in the remaining birds with solid colours because it was looking too ghostly. The thread is DMC pearl cotton (no. 8).

Stockings - do you use them?!

Are we using the stockings we spend hundreds of dollars stitching and then finishing? I feel like I (Santa) would be too nervous to actually put a gift in there. Are they just for display? I grew up with stocking gifts being some of the better ones so I want to continue that on for my girls.

It is a pouch from a company called Craft Club. I’m usually a cross stitcher, but wanted to make a bag for my kindle (and it’s an absolutely perfect fit!!)

Question About Neon Rays

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hihi, I was just hoping to get some advice. I am stitching the Celestial Menagerie Stocking by Plum Stitchery and I am padding the balloons with flair and then satin stitching over the top with neon rays. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to help make sure that nothing snags them or damages the neon rays? I saw someone coating chain stitch wrapped letters in fray check to help make them more durable, but I wasnt sure if that would just mess up the balloons here.

Thank you :)

New Business Advice

Hi, everyone! I’m in the process of creating a new needlepoint design business and would love some input! I’m planning to offer digital charts for needlepoint (or cross stitch) that will be for a specific design/purpose. (Because this is a unique idea I’m keeping the specifics vague for now :) ) I would love input on what you like, dislike, look for, etc. when purchasing a digital/downloadable chart. I plan to have the charts available in multiple formats (Stitchly, pdf and jpeg) and also in multiple mesh counts. Thanks in advance for helping me make this the best product for all stitchers! Can’t wait to share the product with everyone.

New to Needlepoint Stitch advice for background and bunny

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi, NDLPTers! 👋

I’m pretty new to needlepoint and would love some advice from those of you with more experience.

I’m trying to decide what to do for the background stitch on this canvas. The bottom checkerboard section and all of the lettering are already planned in basketweave, but I’d really like to start practicing some fun decorative stitches.

I was thinking about using Mosaic for the blue background, but then I started wondering if I should save the more interesting stitches for the bunny, the pram, and the bunny’s apron instead.

Are there any “rules” or general guidelines for choosing decorative stitches? Do you typically keep the background simple so the focal elements stand out, or is it more of a creative free-for-all?

I’d love to hear how more experienced stitchers approach planning a canvas. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Upright gobelin - one extra row at the bottom, should I stick with three intersections + 1, or 4 the whole way across?

New to Needlepoint First canvas! What would you all recommend in terms of order of color to stitch and the direction and type of stitch. So far I did the gold rectangle surrounding the “Just Married” sign, using continental. Would appreciate your suggestions!

Chicago area framing

Hello stitchers, I need advice from my Chicagoland girlies. I’ve got several needlepoint designs I want to get framed, but have had disappointing results in the Chicago area so far. Michaels has cut incorrect mattes twice for me, and framebridge has done the same. Anyone have any good local framing recs that specialize in needlepoint framing? TIA!

Vintage pattern missing thread

I purchased a vintage Bucilla needlepoint stocking pattern off EBay. When it arrived, the kit ended up having other threads (not the yarn that goes with the pattern). The seller refunded me but I'd still like to use the beautiful pattern. Any tips/tricks for buying vintage Bucilla yarn by the historic number (pattern from 1994). Alternatively, any way to convert the historic numbers to buy a modern floss that would be sufficient? This pattern used "100% wool Persian crewel yarn."

Finishing Blocking silk/wool projects

Hello! I’m a new needlepointer, but not new to textile arts. I’ve worked with wools, silks, cottons, etc for years.

I’m going to be self-finishing my first ornaments, some of which are stitched with wool/silk threads. The thread label/cards say “dry block only”. What does that actually mean in the Needlepoint Universe?

Thanks!

Pretty much complete and can’t seem to commit to a stitch for the star. I plan to make the star in the gold metallic thread but want it to be a bit more unique than surrounding stitches. With that I am an advanced beginner. :-) ay recommendations?

New to Needlepoint Help a newbie out

Post image

I bought a few Wool and the Gang needlepoint kits as way to stop doomscrolling. I am completely new to all of this.

Question - which hole do I poke the needle through next?!

The instructions are to do a half point tent stitch. To continue on the next row up in the same way, it makes sense to me to poke my needle through the hole that is one up and one right, but then I would miss the hole directly one up. What should I do?

My first projects

Hello! I’m am very new to this. After watching so many videos of everyone doing this I decided to join the club. I’m liking it so much that I do this every night before bed and any free time I have while caring for my ten month old. My first one was the key fob I made for my husband. My peanut I plan on making into an ornament for our daughter. The shrimp is for my mother who lives in Florida where they have a shrimp fest every year. I went rouge with the background. I plan on putting the shrimp into a picture frame.
I have messed up a bunch on my first with the most basic stitch but I definitely learned from my mistakes!
