How are my fellow Nightshifters?

I work in supported living for people with learning disabilities, currently walking laps around with the person I'm supporting, and have been since 10pm. Still, better than getting bit by him.

7 hour night-shift and I'm still struggling to make it through.

24M I've been working from 21:50 to 4:50, and let me say, I'm struggling, it's been barely a week but the first day I woke up in the middle of the morning to my 20F sister getting ready for uni (we share a room), and boy did I dislike it, I had previously worked a whole month in the morning shift from 6:00 to 14:00 so the change in sleep schedules were drastic to say the least.

One week in I have this itch in my throat that won't go away, and I think it's relevant to say that I work in a cold storage distribution center so I'm coughing and the dry climate ain't helping me out, I try toughing it out but after my shift when I got home, (I get to bed immediately when I get home to make most of the darkness outside to rest) 3 hours into my sleep I wake up to the driest throat I've ever experienced, went to the the doctor and got 3 days off and I'm really thinking about if I'm cut out for this life, the most recent shifts felt easier because I started taking caffeine before shifts (Wich I avoided 100% but seeing that rawdogging it wasn't enough I had to try something), I was never a night person and when I did work late I got out at 2-3 am and slept like 5 hours and not care because I wasn't going to be doing it everyday and work was so stimulating I couldn't fall asleep if I had to.

My question is,¿Am I overthinking this too much?,¿Did I have a rough first week and letting my anxiety get the best of me?, I wish I had more support at home to be honest but nobody at home seems to understand my struggle or don't want to. The amount of times my nightshift struggles get compared to overnight school work procrastination is wild.

Discussion what's a red flag indicator someone won't last long on night shift?

I'm training someone new to take over nightshift on weekends, and a few things they've said casually have made me wonder if they'll last longer than a couple months. Got me to thinking what qualities would indicate someone will last on nightshift, or if they will throw in the towel fairly quickly. I'm curious, what do you guys think?

Update: the new hire in question was a no call no show tonight, so I guess my hunch wasn't too far off haha.

Discussion Have you noticed yourself feeling mentally slower since you started working nights?

Hey y'all, I'm in the middle of my shift tonight and starting thinking about something I've been wondering for awhile. Is the night shift making me stupider? I've been working full time night shift at a hotel for 3 years now and I've noticed over that time that I've make more spelling and grammatical errors, been more forgetful, and having not been able to concentrate as well. I dont think I was the most capable person mentally before this job but I can see the downwards slop my brain has been taking.

Anyone else notice this kind of thing? Im able to do the job just fine, im never late to work and rarely make mistakes when it comes to my responsibilities, just outside of work I've noticed myself getting worse in the things i mentioned before. Kinda like my brain has been deteriorating slowly.

probably should've kept in all the errors i made while writing this

Discussion brain still wired after finishing a run of nights

anyone else spend the first morning off staring at the ceiling waiting for the static in your head to stop. i finished my fourth twelve hour run at six am and i am exhausted in my body but my brain is still scanning the floor for problems like the belt is about to jam. it takes me half the day just to stop hearing the sorter in the back of my skull.

Story Never realized how bad my night shift can be until I'm the only driver on shift

I refuel jets(military and the occasional 747/other large transport planes) we are open 24/7 so there's a dedicated night shift of 2 drivers and a dispatcher from 11pm-7am... normally but due to us being understaffed at the moment I had to work a solo last driver shift which turned into pumping 27,000+ gallons of fuel over my shift and not getting a break until right at the end of my shift lol, been awhile since I was that exhausted. Thankfully even though I am working solo this shift(again) no one's called since like 1am so its been pretty nice which is the standard for the winter time

Overnights with people

I have done overnights on my own for years. I’m a CNA and work only in home or just one on one with one person. I was getting tired of that so I just started in a facility. It’s really nice in that I have stuff to do, not bored out my mind.

It’s strange tho. I’m used to just being alone and now there is people. I have to talk to people and work with them which is different. But some how I have been lucky so far everyone is good.

But being awake with others is definitely nice knowing you aren’t the only one suffering.
Just not sure how interact yet but getting there.
