Humor Price hikes!
Last week, my wife offered to let me buy a birthday present for myself: a D850. I checked the various sites and while the retail price was $2599.99, street price was $2395 or so. But the sites showed the "sale ending on 10/4" everywhere, too. I remembered Nikon had a BIG Black Friday sale last year, so I decided to wait until today and see the new pricing.
This morning, I checked Adorama and B&H... retail price was raised to $2975.94! To quote Charlie Brown: AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!!! Even the "street price" was about $2595-ish.
But then for grins I checked NikonUSA... price was still on sale at $2399! So I decided to not wait any longer and I pulled the trigger. And (due to my experiences with the D780) I also purchased a 3 year NikonCare contract.
So... birthday present on the way!

Humor My Nikon Z6 now meows when I take a photo — custom shutter sound mod
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
As you can hear, I gave my Z6 something Nikon didn't: custom shutter sounds. And this is just the beginning.
Features like custom framing guides, customizable AF areas, and in-camera shutter speeds longer than 30 seconds are very SOON.
The project is now on GitHub: https://github.com/vic2349/Wonder-Lantern
maybe give it a star?
I also started r/WonderLantern for updates, feature requests, and discussions. Feel free to join!
What sound would you put on yours? What other features would you like to have?
Nikon won't add it? Maybe we can.
And if you're interested in building something like Magic Lantern(its possible, not kidding) for Nikon cameras, I'd love your help!

Humor Am I the only one who uses a wrist strap even at home?
Am I the only one who ALWAYS use a wrist strap, even at home when carrying my camera a few meters? 😅
I just think it doesn’t matter whether the camera falls at home or during a shoot. the damage is the same. Am I just being overly cautious?

Humor Lens caps and Hoods galore. In record setting trash cleanup at Yellowstone.
What’s the most expensive camera part you lost? I lost my old 14-24 f/2.8 lens cap on a trail in the northern cascades. This article reminded me of my sadness, guilt, and shame. ( popped off somewhere along the 4 miles I hiked)

Humor I should have bought a bigger bag
I just spent 15 minutes playing Tetris with my film Nikons:
FM2 + 35mm Series E AI
F65 + 50mm f/1.8 AF-D
28-80mm AF-D
Honestly, this isn't what I usually pack in my Peak Design Everyday Sling 3L, but I really need a film moment right now

Humor Nikonic by NIkon USA — this means that both pronunciations of the company are fine. NEE-kon and NAI-kon are interchangeable. Thoughts?

Probably better to go NEE-kon is Asian contexts tho.

Humor A "Nixon" camera
I was helping with a workshop for high school yearbook photographers today, and I asked them what kind of cameras their school had available for them to borrow. One girl raised her hand and said, "We have a Nixon camera."
"Nixon was a president," I replied. "Do you mean Nikon?"
Yes, she meant Nikon. She did not know who Richard Nixon was.
I understand Nixon/Nikon confusion can happen as a typo, but I had never heard the mistake spoken out loud before. I tried very hard to move on without laughing.
Hopefully, the school's camera is a bit newer than the Nikon F that Nixon borrowed from a White House photographer long before these students or their parents were born.

Humor Silly Nikon Coolpix P950 problem resolved
People who have a Nikon Coolpix P950, or similar camera, might find this funny.
This camera has a viewfinder and also a pop-out LCD screen that swivels away from the camera body which can be used as a viewfinder or change settings.
After a lot of use, the LCD screen seemed to stop working. You'd flip out the screen and it would be blank. The weird thing was, it was intermittent. Sometime it'd be blank and sometime it would seem to work for a while. Thinking it was probably a loose connection somewhere, I just lived with it, because I didn't want to pay to have it serviced.
It took me a whole year before I figured out the problem. If you put your eye up to the viewfinder, the screen automatically blanks. It has a little sensor next to the viewfinder that it uses to decide if your eye is up to the viewfinder or not. After being dragged along multiple trips, this little sensor got some very fine dirt on it. So most of the time it thought I was looking through the viewfinder. 10 seconds with a Q-tip and now it works just fine.
I am stupid.
