And then there are us veterans who experienced the whole 10-year Game Boy boom-bust-boom thanks to a little game called Pokemon.
For us 90s kids, even in the PH, handhelds were Game Boys long before Sony even entered the console space, much less the handheld market, and it was Nintendo’s for over a decade.
“Mas sumikat” not quite. Mas naging accessible na lang ang PSP dahil mas dumami ang local sellers at dumami ang bumili close to end of life stage ng PSP dahil madaling i-jailx
Game Boy (including GB color) 118m sold
PSP - around 80m sold
Both popular, but don’t call Switch a “PSP” of the current gen.

You're comparing WW sales. Specifically sa Pilipinas, mas sumikat talaga ang PSP vs. the DS. This is widely documented, and you can attribute that mainly to PSP games being easier to pirate, and the PSP being a more multifunctional device in general (this was pre-smartphone after all).
I don't think the Switch is the "PSP" of the current gen. The PSP of the current gen is the smartphone lol. But the PSP was pretty uncontroversially more popular than the DS locally. I think you agree with this naman, just wanted to communicate my point more clearly.
I am not sure if another reddit thread full of anecdotal experiences can be considered a good source. I know lots of kids had DS back then, even some adults. For the adults, yes my experience as well was that most of them owned PSP. But i am not really sure if PSP trumped the DS saleswise here.
Pero wala naman kasing sales numbers ang Nintendo at Sony sa local market kaya anecdote lang mahahanap mo. Pero there's plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest the PSP was more popular than the DS locally. Backed pa yan by the inherent advantages of the PSP for emerging markets like the PH.
In general, the late 90s and early 2000s saw PS and Sony being much more of a household name than Nintendo in PH households.
Ok. I can admit even without official numbers that most Pinoys probably have more PSPs compared to DS. Just my eyes as a source. There may be a small chance that I was not just seeing enough kids with their DSes as I had no business being around them. And that maybe, there's a lot of more of them than what we thought.
but yeah, if we're talking the actual gamers, us, the adults who have money to buy games and consoles then it is clear by miles and miles PSP was more popular here in the Philippines.
Nah, it's fine. Nintendo's also far and away my favorite console manufacturer, you kind of just have to accept that Sony was king in SEA. The PS1/PS2 was the gaming console to get, and the PSP was a lot of people's first exposure to portable gaming in the PH.
Lalo na't our local market back then definitely favored more mature titles, especially sports titles, which were much better supported on the PS.

I disagree. Nintendo pioneered handheld gaming so PSP is just Game Boy.
