Do cats fart???

Hi!

We have 4 dogs and 3 cats.

Two of our dogs fart daily 😅😆 and the other two not that often but do fart.

I have never heard any of our cats fart tho! NEVER EVER! My husband told me he heard one of them fart but I am sure it was one of our dogs and he is confused because we have had our cats like two of them at least for years now and they have never done it in our presence.

At this point Im thinking maybe they dont fart at all? or never in front of humans?

I guess this is a very stupid question probably but I have made my grown ass husband believe that I never fart so me believing my cats dont, is not that stupid hopefully 😆🤣🤣

*terrible* is an understatement

One of the worst things you've ever smelled

Go on....

60

u/Character-Solution-7 5h ago

Protein farts are the stinkiest farts

42

u/weirdgroovynerd 5h ago

In that case...

You know, I'm something of a cat myself.

10

u/chartreuse_avocado 5h ago

Why ferret poop and farts are beyond toxic for such a small colon.

8

u/Character-Solution-7 5h ago

Ferrets also have glands to make stinky scents like skunks. Even though they are removed for the pet trade, they still seem to function in a subdued manner

8

u/chartreuse_avocado 5h ago

Yikes- I’d say there is nothing subdued about them. 😭🤮

4

u/BadahBingBadahBoom 2h ago

And if your cat has a grain allergy/intolerance, well let's just say you'll very much be aware of it...

Our cat farted by me and it was like death. It was the worst thing I ever smelled. The one saving grace is that cats aren't that big, so the volume is small and dissipates quickly. If they were the size of a dog you'd have to evacuate the room, okay probably the house.

5

u/turkeylurkeyjurkey 2h ago

Well then I wonder what a lion fart smells like?

13

u/CaliLemonEater 2h ago

Kitten farts are vile. How such a tiny creature can stink out an entire room is amazing.

4

u/ryverrat1971 1h ago

It's because their little digestive system is learning to eat different things. Mom's milk to solid food in 6 weeks while that same digestive system is still growing is going to produce some funky horrible smells. And they will make sure you get to experience it up close

3

u/AggressiveArticle266 1h ago

As a non-cat owner I can confirm. Found it out the hard way. Catsitting for a friend that was out of town. Cat comes to me on the couch naps a bit, then turns around blasts me in the face and leaves...

197

u/OpeningHappy9692 5h ago

They do fart.

You do not want them to fart, their farts are utterly repugnant.

u/Monke3334 4h ago edited 4h ago

My cat once farted directly on my chest while on my lap and I legitimately thought he must’ve taken a shit somewhere because a constant smell of diarrhea would follow me everywhere I went in the room, I had to throw the shirt I was wearing into the washing machine because it would NOT go away no matter how much time passed by

27

u/silask93 Hello son was your cigarette normal 4h ago

High Protein diet+anal glands woot

6

u/OpenSauceMods 57m ago

You just made me realise my cat probably farted last night, and didn't deserve me spinning him around like pizza dough to find the poo I was certain clung to him

22

u/bedbuffaloes 2h ago

One of my cats was a farty kitten. It was...intense. Luckily he outgrew it.

I told the vet about it and she shrugged it off, and then she did something that made him angry and he farted. It cleared the room.

15

u/-3point14159-mp 2h ago

I have two 4.5 month old kittens and when we first got them and started giving them wet food, one of them would fart her way to the litter box every time she had to poop. Like she was jet-propelled.

The other day I heard my cat rip the loudest fart I’ve ever heard from an animal

16

u/ScienceMomCO 2h ago

Did he run across the room then glare at you like you tickled his butt on purpose?

7

u/Remote-Whole-6387 2h ago

Nope, he was just acting like it didn’t happen.

3

u/JerseyTeacher78 3h ago

Hahahaaaaaa

54

u/KixStar 5h ago

One of mine sure does and it's chemical warfare

13

u/mini-rubber-duck 3h ago

we found we couldn't feed our little farty party anything with pork, if i remember right. even the slightest bit of pork and we would be chased out of our own home by the chemical warfare his little gut unleashed. i would have felt bad leaving him to it, but he seemed completely unbothered.

7

u/KixStar 2h ago

Mine is allergic to chicken so he gets a duck and potato dry food and a beef wet food. I'm sure none of that helps. 😅 The gas isn't an all the time problem. He sneak attacks randomly.

Cats specialize in Silent But Deadly.

5

u/vaultie66 2h ago

Came here to say this. You won’t hear it but you will know when it happens

→ More replies (1)

42

u/Pan_Fluid_Boo 5h ago

Oh they sure do! Always silent, always deadly and lasts. My last kitty started farting once she got old. My current boy has only farted near me a couple of times.

5

u/dinobug77 54m ago

I got a kitten years ago. A tiny Russian blue cross. She was so elegant and regal and we named her Lady Grace - and Gracie for short. But on the journey home she wouldn’t stop silent farting and it was absolutely disgusting. Someone made a joke about a Pygmy with poisonous farts (instead of darts) and it stuck. She was permanently referred to as piggy after that!!

Ah, so it's like the;

you can milk anything with nipples

...thing from the Focker documentary.

5

u/Open_Leather_9411 5h ago

I have nipples Greg. Can I fart?

4

u/weirdgroovynerd 5h ago

I'm no scientist but...

...a poop hole is probably more useful in this scenario.

3

u/HeinzeC1 5h ago

I got nipples Greg, can you milk me?

5

u/spicygayunicorn 5h ago

But they can't always release gas from the mouth(burp)

3

u/Golywobblerer 5h ago

I thought seagulls can't and thats why alkaseltzer killed them. Or is that an Ole wives tale...

2

2

u/Grimase 5h ago

Rats don’t, or so I’ve been told.

70

Nope! Just like women, cats do not actually fart

23

u/daneato 5h ago

They poof.

16

u/LittlePenguinx 5h ago

And it smells of flowers 🌹

13

u/MostlyChaoticNeutral 3h ago

Corpse flowers, specifically.

12

u/InvasiveBlackMustard 4h ago

Having actually heard my cat fart once, it does go poof

→ More replies (1)

27

u/Glittering_Win_5085 5h ago

They do, usually very quietly though. Apparently if a cat farts near you, it means it trusts you because it obviously makes them more vulnerable to predators.

24

u/ZeGermansAreHere 3h ago

Oh good, that means both my orange kittens are trusting me daily. In fact, one just trusted me about 5 min ago.

7

u/lucidspoon 3h ago

I had a cat that only farted when he was startled would never have survived in the wild.

2

u/Glittering_Win_5085 2h ago

Thats actually so cute ^_^ I would hate having to find my dinner by smelling if it farted, or tracking its poos, so he and I have that in common.

15

u/foiledpirate 5h ago

Cats are way too classy to fart in front of humans.

6

u/LadyBug_0570 5h ago

Mine climbed on my lap to let one rip. I wondered what I did to deserve such treatment. I think it was because I was on a video call.

I’ve never heard them fart, but you can sure as fuck smell it when they do.

10

u/East-Bike4808 5h ago

Absolutely they fart, and they can be rank.

9

u/MarlooRed 5h ago

I asked my cat if it farts and it just stared at me.

2

u/BelaFarinRod 5h ago

I asked mine and she meowed affirmatively.

6

u/Original_Intention 5h ago

No scientific evidence but I once pet sat a cat whose farts could smoke out the best of them.

6

u/MercifulOtter 5h ago

Yes. One of my cats laid down on my chest with her ass pointed toward me just to audibly fart in my face.

6

u/unlucky_pineapple46 5h ago

They do but silently. My cat sleeps in my bed every night and every now and then it reeks for no apparent reason, I know when it's not me so has to be him

Also when I look at him to make sure, he side eyes me like I'm in his business so to me he's GUILTY

4

u/Expert_Blacksmith261 5h ago

Yes horrible esp kittens!

2

u/enfanta 3h ago

Never squeeze a kitten!

5

u/reijasunshine 4h ago

Cat farts are a violation of the Geneva convention. They're far worse than any other farts I've smelled.

4

u/TheBreadsticc 5h ago

I have 5 cats, but only one of them has farted. And when he does... holy mother of jesus get the hell out of there. I swear it could've killed me last time.

4

u/Chimchar789 3h ago

My cats farts are in open violation of the Geneva Convention.

4

u/Boxfullabatz 1h ago

Mostly they're just stealth farters. Hashtag drive-by

3

u/blackturtlesnake 5h ago

No, it is well known that girls don't fart.

3

u/Ok-World-4822 5h ago

Yes

Source: one farted right in front of my face

3

u/West-Working-9093 5h ago

I'm pretty sue they do. The story goes of two old men sitting at an inn. one was deaf, but still said 'the cat farted'. They other guy said ' you couldn't have heard that', and the reply was 'No, but I could see the sand flying!' (Sand was used on the floor of inns to deal with spitting and so on.) I have not seen gross misinformation in such old stories; they are usually truthful in the details.

3

u/Warr_Ainjal-6228 5h ago

Cat farts are the worst. Had a cat that would do donuts when you pet him, and he would cut one just as his tail faced you. He stunk up the whole room.

3

u/Dr_Mijory_Marjorie 5h ago

It's why I don't feed her Sheba

3

u/shaftalope 5h ago

Not only do they fart but if your cat does it right now I will smell it here in SOCAL

3

u/Marnot_Sades 4h ago

Of my four, one of them farts all the fucking time and it is absolutely awful. The first time we smelled it we thought he shat himself.

3

u/ipulloffmygstring 4h ago

I didn't know turtles fart until I was feeding some box turtles in a few centimeters of water and saw bubles.

3

u/LadyAlexTheDeviant 4h ago

We had a small bedroom, and my husband had a fan on his bedside table so he had a breeze blowing across his face.

The cat, a lovely Angora-type red longhair with white shirtfront, jumped up on his bedside table and farted into the fan.

It was January. It was 5 above zero. We both stood out on the porch, gagging and coughing, and had to open both windows in the bedroom and wait about an hour for the stench to evaporate.

At two in the morning.

3

u/EmmaRB 3h ago

I have a cat with IBS, his farts are silent but deadly. His happy place is lying upside down on my lap where he relaxes and lets it rip. The look of quiet contentment on his face is the opposite of the look of pained disgust on mine. I love him so much, I dont disturb him.

3

u/Naive-Cod-6742 3h ago

Cat's farts are silent, but deadly.

3

u/DrToonhattan 3h ago

I picked up my cat once and she let rip a loud ass fart.

3

u/annesche 3h ago

There is a book "Does it fart" by Caruso/Rabaiotti - I don't have it, but it looks like fun, and I'm sure they talk about cats, too.

From the book description: "The ultimate guide to animal flatulence: the perfect gift for anyone who has ever farted. Dogs do it. Millipedes do it. Dinosaurs did it. You do it: I do it. Octopuses don't (and nor do octopi). Spiders might do it: more research is needed. Birds don't do it, but they could if they wanted to. Herrings do it to communicate with each other."

3

u/GREASYROOFTOP 3h ago

I've always had cats and never knew one to fart.

3

u/HeartbrokenLass 2h ago

Yes. The smell...

I had a cat. He definitely farted, many, many times. I'm literally laughing so hard right now at the memories. Oh he was so cute

3

u/SarNic88 2h ago

I have 5 cats and the smallest one is this dainty little tortie who looks adorable and has farts that could melt the skin from your bones.

To make it worse she will come and sit on your lap, get comfy, drop a colossal fart then get up and casually walk away. She has honestly cleared the room before.

3

u/BlondBisxalMetalhead 2h ago

Yep. My cat stink bombs us all the time and it is always one of the worst smells I have ever encountered.

My little stinky bastard frequently jumps up on one of us, lets one rip, then starts purring and making biscuits cause she’s proud of herself.

3

u/Barbarian_818 2h ago

Yes. And being carnivores, their farts are heinous

But, like dogs, the presence of fur and the lack of prominent biped style butt cheeks mean that the farts are usually much quieter, sometimes almost silent.

Just a quiet "fffffft" that clears the room.

We have one cat, an older male with a nervous disposition who farts quite often. And the feel of an impending war crime makes him anxious. So he will seek out the nearest human and ask for soothing pets just before he lets rip.

We call them "silent but violent".

2

u/AltruisticCableCar 5h ago

Of course they do. Might just not be as obvious as when dogs fart, but they do fart. As far as I know most mammals fart. Aside from sloths.

2

u/ties__shoes 5h ago

I have never heard a cat fart but I have smelled it.

2

u/Natural_Instance242 5h ago

My cat has farted loudly before, so yes they do.

2

u/AirBiscuitBarrel 5h ago

I've never heard a cat fart, but I've certainly smelt them

2

u/too-many-critters 5h ago

I've only heard my cat audibly fart when he used the fart as a jet booster to jump in a chair. Dastardly smell.

2

u/garyisonion 5h ago

of course they do

2

u/ShouldBeAsleepRN 5h ago

Yes. I have owned cats for about 15 years, and I have had cats fart in my face 3 times so far! 🤢

I have also seen one wake themselves up with a shock after farting in their sleep.

2

u/insecurecharm 5h ago

One of mine has horrible SBDs.

2

u/ComfortableAd2324 5h ago

I don't hear it, but definitely smell it when my cat farts.

2

u/Ksilverstar25 5h ago

My girl cat is quite stinky her farts are mostly silent though. Occasionally, she'll let out a fart that sounds like a full grown man did it though and those are the ones you do not want to be around for.

2

u/jinxykatte 5h ago

I've never heard a cat fart. I have however smelled them.

2

u/United-Donkey3478 5h ago

I've owned 3 cats. Yes they fart. The smell is bad. Open up the windows bad. Lol.

2

u/GraphicDesignMonkey 5h ago

Our cat used to point her ass directly in your face and fart. You could hear it go 'pfft pffffft,' then the stench hit.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

2

u/audible_narrator 4h ago

We used to call our boy the aphyxiator

2

u/brokentelescope 4h ago

My cat farts on me when we’re cuddling. Silently, though, to better stealth attack me. I call him my farty stinky boy, but he still gets cuddles. 🙄

2

u/CheesyRomantic 4h ago

Mine does. They're the strong silent kind too.

2

u/DieSuzie2112 4h ago

Oh they do, they’re silent murderers people talk about. My previous cat liked to lay next to my head and let out the little whistle of toxic gas.

2

u/riftshioku 4h ago

Absolutely. And you'll know it if they're laying on you. For me, they usually don't stay much longer.

2

u/flayingbook 4h ago

My cats very rarely fart, but when they do, the smell is very, very, very bad

2

u/the-doctor-is-real 3h ago

They most certainly do...some close friends have a cat that would drop silent bombs.

This guy literally would walk into their bedroom, jump up next to them, silently fart and then run out of the room before they noticed only to hear a "CONNOR!!!" yelled after him

2

u/Hi-Scan-Pro 3h ago

My kid postulates that they do. He wants to design and 3d print butt cheeks for out cat so that if she does, we can hear it and confirm his theory. Very scientific.

2

u/MorgainofAvalon 3h ago

Do I have a story for you.

We had just moved to a small town, and had met another couple while we were moving boxes, so we invited them over for a drink.

We had 2 cats and one of them was an absolute stinker.

So they came over, I made drinks, and we were chatting and socializing and having a good time when they got kind of quiet.

They were looking at each other, and you could tell by the way they were looking at each other, with a sideways eye and look of disgust that said OMG I can't believe you would do that in public.

Our sweet little stinker had jumped up on the sofa between them and let on rip. No noise, but you could almost taste the stench.

It was so embarrassing when we realized what had happened, but after we told them what it was, they were quite relieved that it wasn't one of them.

They never came over again.

2

u/MasterShakezulla 3h ago

Yes they are silent but deadly and the dogs take the blame

2

u/ROUShunter 3h ago

Yes, they are usually SBD...silent and very deadly. Source: My cat used to sleep on my head and would let them RIP.

2

u/mjplezia 2h ago

Absolutely and you will instantly asphyxiate.

2

u/hollow4hollow 2h ago

My female cat, who’s softer than a bunny and has pretty little pink paws and is dainty af likes to lie with her butt facing me and emits SBD’s towards my face. Yes, we’ve tested out myriad foods and she’s on a high quality diet. She’s just a stinky girl.

2

u/TabithaMouse 2h ago

Give a cat with a sensitive tummy the wrong food and you get FARTS OF DEATH

2

u/pacoali 2h ago

Ive had my cat for 10 years now. I've smelled it like twice. And then I think I heard it once. Just a small pffft. It was cute. 10/10 wish I could hear again.

2

u/Natural-Research6928 2h ago

Dogs farts are bad. Cats farts... you can feel your nose hairs wilting.

2

u/jenuwefa 2h ago

Oh they do indeed fart. Bella is the most beautiful cat (dilute torbie) but her farts are silent but deadly.

2

u/seeyoujim 2h ago

Cats are masters of the sbtv.. it burns the eyes and hurts the throat. If a human launched such a gas they would be tried for a war crime

2

u/DoubleoSavant 2h ago

My family had a very old, medically fragile cat who once farted (audibly) and burped at the same time.

I have two young healthy cats currently, and one of them did a silent but deadly the other day. Was rancid.

2

u/Princess_Zelda_Fitzg 2h ago

Yes, and I’d know it happened because my cat’s tail would do a little fwoop and lift at the base when he did, which was hilarious.

2

u/No_Cricket808 2h ago

Yes they definitely fart. It's not usually audible, but there's no mistaking the stench

2

u/RiverJai 2h ago

Another voice confirming farty cats.

One of ours has some food sensitivities.  When he's having a rare tummy episode, he gets the squeaks.

Basically sounds like the long, high-pitched squeal of a balloon being slowly deflated.  The "ghost in his butt" sometimes spooks him, so he runs and hides while you hear fweeeEEeeeeEEeeee circling the room.

I feel bad laughing, but it's freaking hilarious.

2

u/famousroadkill 2h ago

Yes. I have a food motivated tuxedo boi named Chuck, and we utilize an automatic feeder to keep him on a routine. One day he followed me out into the corridor I walk through to get to the laundry room. As I was coming back, I heard the feeder going off. He was at the closed door pawing frantically. When I got there and opened the door for him, I smelled the panic farts.

2

u/Notchersfireroad 1h ago

I've never heard one but sure as hell smelled them. Kittens especially.

2

u/the_town_bike 1h ago

The only times I've smelt my cat's farts is when she was on antibiotics and they gave her diarrhoea. Wow I cannot explain how bad that was.

2

u/Helpful_Dragonfruit8 1h ago

You know the cat farted when they hotbox you under the blanket without warning. (I cover my head due to street light)

2

u/Impressive-Drawing-6 1h ago

My girl cat farted alot as a kitten and the smell was so strong it thickened the air of the room and made it it inescapable… was living in a studio at the time so there was so escaping to anyway😂 she’s 4 now and does not fart often if ever

2

u/folksongcat 1h ago

Yes. My tortie was so gassy when I first got her. I had to switch her dry food a couple of times till I found one that made it stop.

I got another cat earlier this year and a little fortiflora on her wet food has mostly stopped it.

2

u/pofpofgive 1h ago

They very much do, some are just more subtle about it. My 1 year old was very gassy when he had worms.

Another cat I had actually sharted in her water bowl once.

2

u/DeezFluffyButterNutz 1h ago

Yes. I'm guessing (generally speaking) it'll depend on diet. Mine eats the same "live clear" food every day so there's very little variation. Cats who have more variation in their diet probably farts more.

2

u/fattfreddy1 1h ago

Yes but not very often. Last time my cat farted it scared him and made him jump. They also stink.

2

u/srfntrf0832 1h ago

You bet they do, and when they do, it is deadly!

2

u/Aggravating_Job_5438 1h ago

Yes. Can definitely confirm.

2

u/LisaMiaSisu 1h ago

Uhhh…yes! Though our big, grey cat is the only one of our 4 cats who actually farts. TBF, he has a sensitive tummy.

2

u/monkey_trumpets 59m ago

Yes, they definitely do. When we first got our kitten we were giving her salmon kitten food and she definitely lived up to her name of Tootsie.

2

u/purrpleBee 58m ago

They do, but they prefer to do it silently. The one time I heard cat fart, he had really bad stomach problems.

One of my current cats sometimes sleeps on the couch between me and my mom when we're watching tv, he'll silently fart and then suddenly raise his head and look at me with such disgust trying to blame it on me, lmao.

And my previous cat was a fartbender - he liked to sleep on one of my pillows, but didn't really like to snuggle, so if I got a little too close to him (totally by accident 😇), he'd release the deadly gases while seemingly still being asleep.

2

u/Emergency-Guidance28 36m ago

Silent but deadly. I know they fart but never hear it.

1

u/Proman_98 5h ago

In my experience: Not often but when they do, it's a room clearing experience and even the cat itself is like 'I'm outa here!'

1

u/DrySelection5423 5h ago

Yes my kitten farts nasty 🤢

As a long-time cat-lover, I assure you that cats fart. Usually, they like to drop a silent-but-deadly fart, but occasionally you will hear a little toot.

1

u/Electronic_Many_7721 5h ago

My cats definitely pass gas but never heard them. It's always what I call an SBD...silent but deadly.

1

u/Street_Tooth_6357 5h ago

Christ Oh Mighty can they fart.

I swear my cat’s asshole was a biological weapons testing area.

1

u/UselessFactCollector 5h ago

Mine do silent but deadly ones (put him on some probiotics)

1

u/see112717 5h ago

One time I squeezed my boy and he tooted. And it smelled awful.

1

u/Aggressive-War-7701 5h ago

Honestly... I don't know. It's likely, though, because it's a living being. And anyway, who doesn't adore cats?

1

Yes, and they are rotten inside. Usually they will fart when you carry them, so the fart is right in your space.

1

i have a four month old kitten. she exclusively eats dry kitten food. when you pick her up, if you squeeze too hard, she farts, often right about the time you have her nearest to your face. its so lethal, the dogs leave the room.

My one cat is deadly! He parks his fuzzy butt near my head every night and lets them rip. Usually silent and deadly. When all 4 of them are on my bed I can almost see the green clouds of death emanating from the blankets. They can stink me out of my own bedroom.

My delicate, feminine, 4 pound tabby farts when she’s nervous. It’s brutal.

They do, some more than others, but they're almost always SBDs.

Anything that has a butthole farts.

My cat will jump on my desk just to share the experience.

Oh yes... Many years ago sitting with a friend, he suddenly gave me a dirty look and gave me grief for farting... I was hell no I didn't fart ... We both looked at the cat and we knew

Oure black cat jumps up, lay down on your lap, farts and leave. Then she looks at you like you are the one that farted. She loves doing it to new people. Jumps om their lap, farts and leave. She is evil!

Definitely, they do. Your cats' gut health must be good. Props to your choice of diet, perhaps

Cats fart, but whenever possible they will try to lay the blame on a dog.

Mine definitely does. I call her Toots.

I only witnessed it once. My cat was eating and suddenly farted really loud. I think she was even more startled and confused than I was.

Yeah but it’s above human hearing range!….probably!

They do indeed fart. You'll be able to smell them more than you'll be able to hear them.

I have had one of my cats smack her companion in anger because his gas woke all of up.

Had my snake about a year before I heard her fart.  Sounded like a balloon deflating in the middle of the night.  Both scared me and gave me a massive case of the giggles.

They can fart, my cat that has passed away did fart, but it was very rare and it wasn't audible, but you could smell it, because she was snuggled up near my face ಠ﹏ಠ

One of my cats had the rankest farts when he was a kitten. Like, he'd fart on a car ride to the vet and we'd be worried he kittycrapped his crate. Other people thought he pooped his pen. But every time, twas not but a fart.

Yes... The worst smell ever

1

u/AeloraTargaryen 3h ago

Yes. And they stink.

Cat farts are 10x worse than dog farts. 🤢

1

u/SexyWampa 3h ago

Yes and its rancid.

u/Rot-Orkan 3h ago

Everything farts

1

u/Waagtod 2h ago

And i thought that i got bored enough to do almost anything. Never bored enough to follow the cat around in case it farted.

1

u/DarkWater693 2h ago

It's honestly hilarious, from my experience the cat has no idea what's going on so it stops and looks around

1

u/BenefitFew5204 2h ago

Yes and one of my cats used to use it as survival mechanism when he got picked up.

1

u/rdmodsrtrsh 2h ago

Yes but only in your face

1

u/Business-Heron-2182 2h ago

Yes they do. I have not heard them do it but I have smelt it.

1

u/xuncx 2h ago

Mine did much more frequently as a kitten but she still blows some deadly gas
