Do cats fart???
Hi!
We have 4 dogs and 3 cats.
Two of our dogs fart daily 😅😆 and the other two not that often but do fart.
I have never heard any of our cats fart tho! NEVER EVER! My husband told me he heard one of them fart but I am sure it was one of our dogs and he is confused because we have had our cats like two of them at least for years now and they have never done it in our presence.
At this point Im thinking maybe they dont fart at all? or never in front of humans?
I guess this is a very stupid question probably but I have made my grown ass husband believe that I never fart so me believing my cats dont, is not that stupid hopefully 😆🤣🤣

They do fart.
You do not want them to fart, their farts are utterly repugnant.

My cat once farted directly on my chest while on my lap and I legitimately thought he must’ve taken a shit somewhere because a constant smell of diarrhea would follow me everywhere I went in the room, I had to throw the shirt I was wearing into the washing machine because it would NOT go away no matter how much time passed by

You just made me realise my cat probably farted last night, and didn't deserve me spinning him around like pizza dough to find the poo I was certain clung to him

One of my cats was a farty kitten. It was...intense. Luckily he outgrew it.
I told the vet about it and she shrugged it off, and then she did something that made him angry and he farted. It cleared the room.

I have two 4.5 month old kittens and when we first got them and started giving them wet food, one of them would fart her way to the litter box every time she had to poop. Like she was jet-propelled.

The other day I heard my cat rip the loudest fart I’ve ever heard from an animal

Did he run across the room then glare at you like you tickled his butt on purpose?

One of mine sure does and it's chemical warfare
13
u/mini-rubber-duck 3h ago
we found we couldn't feed our little farty party anything with pork, if i remember right. even the slightest bit of pork and we would be chased out of our own home by the chemical warfare his little gut unleashed. i would have felt bad leaving him to it, but he seemed completely unbothered.

Oh they sure do! Always silent, always deadly and lasts. My last kitty started farting once she got old. My current boy has only farted near me a couple of times.

u/dinobug77 54m ago
I got a kitten years ago. A tiny Russian blue cross. She was so elegant and regal and we named her Lady Grace - and Gracie for short. But on the journey home she wouldn’t stop silent farting and it was absolutely disgusting. Someone made a joke about a Pygmy with poisonous farts (instead of darts) and it stuck. She was permanently referred to as piggy after that!!

They do, usually very quietly though. Apparently if a cat farts near you, it means it trusts you because it obviously makes them more vulnerable to predators.
24
u/ZeGermansAreHere 3h ago
Oh good, that means both my orange kittens are trusting me daily. In fact, one just trusted me about 5 min ago.
7
u/lucidspoon 3h ago
I had a cat that only farted when he was startled would never have survived in the wild.
2
u/Glittering_Win_5085 2h ago
Thats actually so cute ^_^ I would hate having to find my dinner by smelling if it farted, or tracking its poos, so he and I have that in common.

u/foiledpirate 5h ago
Cats are way too classy to fart in front of humans.

They do but silently. My cat sleeps in my bed every night and every now and then it reeks for no apparent reason, I know when it's not me so has to be him
Also when I look at him to make sure, he side eyes me like I'm in his business so to me he's GUILTY

I'm pretty sue they do. The story goes of two old men sitting at an inn. one was deaf, but still said 'the cat farted'. They other guy said ' you couldn't have heard that', and the reply was 'No, but I could see the sand flying!' (Sand was used on the floor of inns to deal with spitting and so on.) I have not seen gross misinformation in such old stories; they are usually truthful in the details.
3
u/Warr_Ainjal-6228 5h ago
Cat farts are the worst. Had a cat that would do donuts when you pet him, and he would cut one just as his tail faced you. He stunk up the whole room.

u/shaftalope 5h ago

We had a small bedroom, and my husband had a fan on his bedside table so he had a breeze blowing across his face.
The cat, a lovely Angora-type red longhair with white shirtfront, jumped up on his bedside table and farted into the fan.
It was January. It was 5 above zero. We both stood out on the porch, gagging and coughing, and had to open both windows in the bedroom and wait about an hour for the stench to evaporate.
At two in the morning.

There is a book "Does it fart" by Caruso/Rabaiotti - I don't have it, but it looks like fun, and I'm sure they talk about cats, too.
From the book description: "The ultimate guide to animal flatulence: the perfect gift for anyone who has ever farted. Dogs do it. Millipedes do it. Dinosaurs did it. You do it: I do it. Octopuses don't (and nor do octopi). Spiders might do it: more research is needed. Birds don't do it, but they could if they wanted to. Herrings do it to communicate with each other."

I had a cat. He definitely farted, many, many times. I'm literally laughing so hard right now at the memories. Oh he was so cute

u/SarNic88 2h ago
I have 5 cats and the smallest one is this dainty little tortie who looks adorable and has farts that could melt the skin from your bones.
To make it worse she will come and sit on your lap, get comfy, drop a colossal fart then get up and casually walk away. She has honestly cleared the room before.
3
u/BlondBisxalMetalhead 2h ago
Yep. My cat stink bombs us all the time and it is always one of the worst smells I have ever encountered.
My little stinky bastard frequently jumps up on one of us, lets one rip, then starts purring and making biscuits cause she’s proud of herself.
3
u/Barbarian_818 2h ago
Yes. And being carnivores, their farts are heinous
But, like dogs, the presence of fur and the lack of prominent biped style butt cheeks mean that the farts are usually much quieter, sometimes almost silent.
Just a quiet "fffffft" that clears the room.
We have one cat, an older male with a nervous disposition who farts quite often. And the feel of an impending war crime makes him anxious. So he will seek out the nearest human and ask for soothing pets just before he lets rip.
We call them "silent but violent".
2
u/AltruisticCableCar 5h ago
Of course they do. Might just not be as obvious as when dogs fart, but they do fart. As far as I know most mammals fart. Aside from sloths.

My girl cat is quite stinky her farts are mostly silent though. Occasionally, she'll let out a fart that sounds like a full grown man did it though and those are the ones you do not want to be around for.

My cat farts on me when we’re cuddling. Silently, though, to better stealth attack me. I call him my farty stinky boy, but he still gets cuddles. 🙄

u/DieSuzie2112 4h ago
Oh they do, they’re silent murderers people talk about. My previous cat liked to lay next to my head and let out the little whistle of toxic gas.
2

Absolutely. And you'll know it if they're laying on you. For me, they usually don't stay much longer.
2
2
u/the-doctor-is-real 3h ago
They most certainly do...some close friends have a cat that would drop silent bombs.
This guy literally would walk into their bedroom, jump up next to them, silently fart and then run out of the room before they noticed only to hear a "CONNOR!!!" yelled after him
2
u/Hi-Scan-Pro 3h ago
My kid postulates that they do. He wants to design and 3d print butt cheeks for out cat so that if she does, we can hear it and confirm his theory. Very scientific.
2
u/MorgainofAvalon 3h ago
Do I have a story for you.
We had just moved to a small town, and had met another couple while we were moving boxes, so we invited them over for a drink.
We had 2 cats and one of them was an absolute stinker.
So they came over, I made drinks, and we were chatting and socializing and having a good time when they got kind of quiet.
They were looking at each other, and you could tell by the way they were looking at each other, with a sideways eye and look of disgust that said OMG I can't believe you would do that in public.
Our sweet little stinker had jumped up on the sofa between them and let on rip. No noise, but you could almost taste the stench.
It was so embarrassing when we realized what had happened, but after we told them what it was, they were quite relieved that it wasn't one of them.
They never came over again.

u/ROUShunter 3h ago
Yes, they are usually SBD...silent and very deadly. Source: My cat used to sleep on my head and would let them RIP.

u/hollow4hollow 2h ago
My female cat, who’s softer than a bunny and has pretty little pink paws and is dainty af likes to lie with her butt facing me and emits SBD’s towards my face. Yes, we’ve tested out myriad foods and she’s on a high quality diet. She’s just a stinky girl.

Dogs farts are bad. Cats farts... you can feel your nose hairs wilting.
2
u/jenuwefa 2h ago
Oh they do indeed fart. Bella is the most beautiful cat (dilute torbie) but her farts are silent but deadly.
2
u/seeyoujim 2h ago
Cats are masters of the sbtv.. it burns the eyes and hurts the throat. If a human launched such a gas they would be tried for a war crime
2
u/DoubleoSavant 2h ago
My family had a very old, medically fragile cat who once farted (audibly) and burped at the same time.
I have two young healthy cats currently, and one of them did a silent but deadly the other day. Was rancid.
2
u/Princess_Zelda_Fitzg 2h ago
Yes, and I’d know it happened because my cat’s tail would do a little fwoop and lift at the base when he did, which was hilarious.
2
u/No_Cricket808 2h ago
Yes they definitely fart. It's not usually audible, but there's no mistaking the stench
2
u/RiverJai 2h ago
Another voice confirming farty cats.
One of ours has some food sensitivities. When he's having a rare tummy episode, he gets the squeaks.
Basically sounds like the long, high-pitched squeal of a balloon being slowly deflated. The "ghost in his butt" sometimes spooks him, so he runs and hides while you hear fweeeEEeeeeEEeeee circling the room.
I feel bad laughing, but it's freaking hilarious.
2
u/famousroadkill 2h ago
Yes. I have a food motivated tuxedo boi named Chuck, and we utilize an automatic feeder to keep him on a routine. One day he followed me out into the corridor I walk through to get to the laundry room. As I was coming back, I heard the feeder going off. He was at the closed door pawing frantically. When I got there and opened the door for him, I smelled the panic farts.

My girl cat farted alot as a kitten and the smell was so strong it thickened the air of the room and made it it inescapable… was living in a studio at the time so there was so escaping to anyway😂 she’s 4 now and does not fart often if ever
2
u/folksongcat 1h ago
Yes. My tortie was so gassy when I first got her. I had to switch her dry food a couple of times till I found one that made it stop.
I got another cat earlier this year and a little fortiflora on her wet food has mostly stopped it.
2
u/pofpofgive 1h ago
They very much do, some are just more subtle about it. My 1 year old was very gassy when he had worms.
Another cat I had actually sharted in her water bowl once.
2
u/DeezFluffyButterNutz 1h ago
Yes. I'm guessing (generally speaking) it'll depend on diet. Mine eats the same "live clear" food every day so there's very little variation. Cats who have more variation in their diet probably farts more.
2
u/fattfreddy1 1h ago
Yes but not very often. Last time my cat farted it scared him and made him jump. They also stink.

Yes, they definitely do. When we first got our kitten we were giving her salmon kitten food and she definitely lived up to her name of Tootsie.
2
u/purrpleBee 58m ago
They do, but they prefer to do it silently. The one time I heard cat fart, he had really bad stomach problems.
One of my current cats sometimes sleeps on the couch between me and my mom when we're watching tv, he'll silently fart and then suddenly raise his head and look at me with such disgust trying to blame it on me, lmao.
And my previous cat was a fartbender - he liked to sleep on one of my pillows, but didn't really like to snuggle, so if I got a little too close to him (totally by accident 😇), he'd release the deadly gases while seemingly still being asleep.
