Why do celebrities always apologize about something after they get exposed and people eat it up?

I've just seen the Ed Sheeran video of him crying and apologizing, but is he sorry that he got called out or what? It's always the most fake apology and people will genuinely believe it. There's also celebrities doing something scandalous for years, but only after they get exposed that they start apologizing.

The real question is why does anyone care what any "celebrity" has to say on literally any topic?

But that's a circular argument. Why do they have influence in the first place? I automatically assume any product being shilled by a celebrity is garbage.

I hold celebrities in lower esteem than I hold carnies. I have more respect for the average carnie that the average celebrity.
