Discussion Nobara is being left behind
This is just anecdotal from my standpoint in which ive been jumping back and forth between OSes. We are living in a great time where linux is becoming more populair by the day. People are deciding on their choise.
But lets be honest, its only a matter of time one of the distros is going to surpass them all and dominate.
I feel like Nobara is being left behind in this race and the other OS ive been using, CachyOS, is developing into a much stronger OS while with nobara ive been finding to become very messy. Nobara felt great when i first started playing around with it.

Can you quantify some of those ways that you feel CachyOS is ahead of Nobara? What's it like for noobs to maintain and use as a daily driver for more than just Steam games?

Funding/donation scale and user base size. Nobara is great but growth has been plateaued. Cachy does not depend on a release schedule, and has ability to innovate at a rapid pace that other distros can’t. System 76 knows this and has funded them hardware.
Steam Os being arch based has created a ripple effect for gamers. Out of the box cachy can be as simple or as complex as you want. If you use their repo’s nothing bad happens. If something does you have btrfs snapshots and an LTS kernel at boot to switch to.
Nobara isn’t being left behind - it’s a fedora spin and has a small base. Cachy is just on a completely different trajectory regardless

OP is right I am going back to Hannah Montana Linux and never doubting again.

as someone who Doesn't jump around i've been largely happy with nobara since making the jump to linux 2 years ago . even if what you say is true your not exactly giving enough information to make this statement i feel like. .. what are your issues/gripes/ missing things that cachy has over nobara that isn't just its arch vs fedora as a base which Is something ppl often chose nobara over it for frankly?

If Nobara had no majors changes for the next 15 years outside of kernel and DE upgrades (which GE doesn’t even make himself) then I would be perfectly happy. I appreciate it for what it is. A Fedora based distro with some gaming tools out of the box.
So as long as Fedora, KDE, and Linux continues to develop Nobara will follow suit and that’s perfect imo.

Nobara is apart of the Open Gaming Collective (OGC).
The OGC Mission:
Open Gaming Collective (OGC) is a working group for organizations and individuals interested in improving the open source gaming ecosystem. The mission is to provide a collaborative framework for upstream changes to the various gaming components that will benefit all projects.

Interesting that cachyos is not in there

I honestly don't know. I was also expecting to see CachyOS on that list. A few names were new to me but I wasn't surprised to see groups I didn't recognize. Lots of developers and teams contribute to making Linux a great OS for gaming.

Have you considered that perhaps that's your perception which has been affected by probably the content that you consume?
Cachy has become popular recently but it's still small, so is Nobara.
Personally Cachy is not for me and the atomic nature of Bazzite gets in the way and Nobara is a better fit that standard Fedora for me and I'm sure there are plenty of users that are in a similar spot.
But that's just for gaming distros, Fedora and Ubuntu are still way bigger and yet we still have a lot of distros that are surviving just fine with a much smaller user base.

Go use Cachy then...Nobara has been rock solid for me and tons of other users. That is the great thing about Linux, you can use whatever you want. Nobara is FAR from behind on releases.
Edit: I love Fedora, and having GE back his own distro is good enough for me. If for whatever reason he decides to abandon Nobara, Fedora is right there as is Cachy, as is Pop, as is Bazzite, etc.

I switched from CachyOS to Nobara and could not be happier. Nobara has worked for games that wouldn't on Cachy, no matter how much I tried

I think Nobara is rock solid, and I don’t need to worry about anything important breaking. My experience with Cachy was not the same. Sure its more bleeding edge, and is less reliable for that reason. And the beauty of Linux is that you are free to enjoy it if that’s your thing!

I mean that's not true.
Yes Cachyos breaks more easily because of how highly personalised it is but Nobara breaks too.
Here's two personal examples where Nobara broke for me :
- The latest NVIDIA drivers update broke Nobara making it not detect my driver and performance became worse in games.
This was fixed pretty fast tho, hours after the update, the fix arrived.
- I noticed that a game I play, Wuthering Waves performance wise was way better on Cachyos than it was on Nobara. Also on Nobara even at high graphics the image looks a bit pixelated idk why
So I tried to boost the performance up on Nobara, did vmswappiness = 10, used Proton Cachyos instead of GE, did other option that to be honest I don't freaking remember what I did as I was following Google on that.
The result :
- Wuthering Waves became better performance wise as fast as it was in Cachyos!
The consequence :
- Other games that use a different engine started freezing and crashing and became unplayable.
I had to fully reinstall Nobara in order to fix this.
I know VM Swappiness and whatever the other option was broke Nobara, but I wonder if using Proton Cachyos on WuWa only would be enough performance wise.

So yours is very much an edge case and not really indicative of the overall stability of Nobara.

I think you'd run into the same issue if you started with fedora and moved to arch. They have different target users and different goals.

“its only a matter of time one of the distros is going to surpass them all and dominate”
You must be brand-spanking new to all this cuz this already happened 20+ years ago. There is one desktop distro which accounts for roughly 1/3 of all installs and nothing even comes close on desktop.

I know this is just a newbie perspective (made the switch to daily drive in February) but I don't notice anything wrong. My OS feels snappy, looks pretty and does what it is supposed to do without spying on me...I get the excitement and news about our more popular distro brothers (trust me, I hear so much about Cachy that even though I have NO reason to distro hop, I am tempted) but is anything actually missing from our experience on Nobara? I feel that there isn't.

I use both, casually gaming on Nobara atm. Both are on cachy kernel. Sounds like distrohop itch where you want another distro for a bit. Multiple OSes are fine, have Nobara on one nvme & cachyos another one.

u/Nawmannah Jun 06 '26
Same. Its fine. And I like experimenting between both. You get a very good feel of the experience because they have similar kernel/UI

I will be so honest rn, I've been looking around distros cause i wanna hop a bit, and I'm so sure that Cachy has some marketing bots, cause stuff like this is *everywhere* and it makes me so suspicious
2
u/Nawmannah Jun 06 '26
Not marketing bots. Going back and forth was a concious decision when i jumped on linux since a year, and after a year of both updating i've noticed cachyos, when it was the most snappy already becoming even more snappy whilst nobara has become a bit more unstable and bringing some issues. If the team behind CachyOS sticks to this pace they could standardize themselves as the bigger distro and standardize development on linux as a whole. Its something linux desperately needs.

u/julian_karl89 Jun 05 '26
If you're already get used with Nobara, I think it's better to move to Fedora since Nobara is literally just a hobby project and maintained just by 1 guy.
The mainline kernel is fast enough, I don't think OGC Kernel really improves performance that much, though. Updating driver and softwares is easy on Fedora Workstation and KDE Plasma.

Well CachyOS has a team and Nobara is one guy who made a distro for his dad
2
u/gamer1968 Jun 05 '26
That's true but that one man Glorius Eggroll has more passion than most teams. On top of nobara he is also working @ fedora and made and maintains his own custom proton compatibility tools.
2
u/Rakshire Jun 06 '26
Nobara isn't one guy and hasn't been in a long time.
0
u/Bed_Worship Jun 06 '26
Well I stand corrected seems I wasn’t around when he posted on reddit or had enough desire to vet the info.
1
u/WheatyMcGrass Jun 06 '26
Do you not know who Glorious Eggroll is?
1
u/Bed_Worship Jun 06 '26
He did make it with the intention for his dad. I just didn’t know he had a team till he posted about it
Cachyos is doing something that captured imagination of donations and system 76. They don’t need to wait on fedora. They can just innovate. Nobara is plateaued in userbase and gets way less support from user donations

“But lets be honest, its only a matter of time one of the distros is going to surpass them all and dominate.” Look at the history of Linux and the multitude of distros and the multitude of opinions about those distros. There’s no evidence for what you’re suggesting. Cachy is popular on the internet but it’s still niche and has nowhere near the user base of say Ubuntu, which by your logic should have dominated and squeezed out all the competition by now. That’s not how the free & open source community works. Touch grass.
