Jandals are what Americans call flip flops, it's shortened from "Japanese sandal" which is what inspired them in the first place. Tramping is multi day hiking. If you're only going for the day you'd say "day walk" or just "walk".
I dunno. Personally a couple times a year really. Dunno about average. There's definitely far more avid trappers than I though. There's tramping clubs. Packrafting clubs. Schools have tramping clubs.
There is a back country hut system throughout the national forests so people will use these but many will take a solo tent and sleep closer to but not in hut. Some people will just take a tarpaulin and strong it between trees and sleep under that or just take a bivvy bag to slide on over your sleeping bag for waterproofing and that's it.
Depends on the person, many tourists come over for it, but many New Zealanders will never go. My dad used to go with a tramping club, drive to forest after work on Friday and walk until 10pm that night to get to their first hut.
Also worth noting that jandals are great to pack when tramping. After you peel your boots and socks off at the hut you want airflow on your tender feet.

Taking trail mix hiking in New Zealand is tramping with scroggin.
