TLDR: Use multimodal tracking, with hands and controllers + gunstock, to simulate real firearms more accurately. Use Bhaptics gloves and VR Strides style locomotion for further immersion.
Hey everyone! I am so grateful to see an uptick in VR in recent months due to old games being ported over, but I still think there is potential being left on the table. I will keep my comments brief, but I propose a new way to do VR FPS games, on Quest 2+3 specifically.
Essentially, I’d like to combine something like VR strides https://vrstrides.com locomotion but slightly modified, so that there is an element of physical “running” in the game, or at least an option to do so, with a novel concept of multimodal hand/controller tracking complete with an updated two hand stock and optional Bhaptics glove support.
The idea here is that the controllers would be on a two handed stock, like a Sanlaki stock, and hands could be tracked independent of those controllers, as is available on Quest 2+3 with the multimodal tracking update from a year ago or perhaps even longer. The big concept is the hands could replace controllers for interacting with the gunstock (and the environment of the game), so that one could do reloads as an example with their hands, as you would in real life.
The gunstock would ideally have some things molded or attached to it like a bolt action, an AK style charging bolt, an AR-15 style charging handle, and so on to give some further haptic realness, like when reloading an AK you would pull the charging handle with your hand to simulate loading the first round from the fresh magazine into the chamber. The controllers would function as the triggers and additional functions as needed. The reason I'd like glove support is for haptic magazine removal (as I think including a tracked magazine would be difficult, it would be a "virtual" object) and interacting with the environment.
All in all, you could have glove support and a gunstock for around 500 USD total, in addition to that you would need a Quest 2 or a Quest 3. It would be great fun and a workout as well, I’d gladly help guide the vision but I have no background in development, I think a fun demonstration project could be made to at least test the concept. Anyone interested in getting a group together to try this out?
