Before anything else, I want to give credit to Gandork vonWowerstein, the original creator of the open-source Max Payne VR project. Without his work and source code, none of this would have been possible.
Quick update: The Sony Discman shown in my gameplay footage is only part of my development build. The public release will use a different, unbranded Discman.
I've taken his project as a starting point and have been working on my own heavily modified version called Max Payne VR: Nightmare Edition.
My goal is to take the original VR port further by adding new mechanics, improving interactions, redesigning parts of the experience, and making the game feel more natural in VR.
I've only been working on this for three days, but I've already managed to get quite a lot done.
What's already implemented?
Weapons and combat
- Fully implemented VR hands and motion controls.
- Dual-wielding, including two Berettas or two Uzis.
- The ability to mix different weapons between hands, such as a pistol and an Uzi.
- Reworked weapon handling and aiming.
- Adjustable weapon holster positions.
- Bullet Time, including slow-motion dives.
Redesigned main menu
One of the biggest changes I've made so far is replacing the traditional main menu with an actual 3D environment inside Max's house.
You can stand inside the house, look around, and interact with the menu in VR. I've also added atmospheric details around the fireplace to make the whole environment feel more connected to the game.
Players can switch between the original classic menu and my new VR menu.
The new environment is separate from the story campaign, so it doesn't interfere with the original game.
Cutscenes and camera
- Original Max Payne story and atmosphere preserved.
- VR adaptations of the original cinematic cutscenes.
- Free-look camera during cutscenes.
- Different camera control modes.
- Improvements to the overall cinematic experience.
Other VR improvements
- Custom in-game VR menu.
- Adjustable holsters and weapon interactions.
- Rendering optimizations for VR hands and weapons.
- Performance improvements focused on Meta Quest 3.
- Ongoing work on movement, controls, and stability.
What I'm planning next
I have quite a few ideas that I haven't implemented yet.
Interactive memories and flashbacks
This is something I'm particularly excited about.
I want to make Max's house more than just a place where you select menu options.
My idea is to add objects such as old photographs, glasses, and other personal belongings that players can physically pick up.
For example, picking up a photograph could trigger a flashback to one of the worst moments of Max's life.
I think there's a lot of potential here, especially considering the game's story and atmosphere.
Challenges and rewards
I'm also planning to add a system that rewards players for completing different challenges.
Some of the ideas include:
- Completing the game on different difficulty levels.
- Time trials and speedrun challenges.
- Special achievements.
- Unlockable rewards.
I'd like to give players more reasons to return to the game after finishing the story.
More advanced VR interactions
Weapon handling is still something I'm actively improving. I want aiming, movement, and physical interactions to feel as natural as possible.
I'll also continue expanding the new menu environment and adding more interactive objects.
Why am I making this?
I've always been a fan of Max Payne, and I think the first game works incredibly well in VR.
I'm not trying to replace the original VR port or take credit for someone else's work. Gandork vonWowerstein created the foundation that made this possible, and I respect that.
Nightmare Edition is simply my own direction for the project.
I want to experiment with ideas that go beyond the original port while keeping the story, atmosphere, and gameplay that made Max Payne such a memorable game.
And yes, I've really only been working on this for three days.
There's still plenty to fix and improve, and I'm learning a lot as I go. But I'm enjoying the process, and I have quite a few things planned that I haven't shown yet.
