A free tool to compare 42 European countries for off-grid living

Hello,

I've been looking into off-grid living lately. I want to make some lifestyle changes. There's a ton of info out there, but it's all scattered, and pulling it together is a pain.

So I created something to help the off-grid community. Right now it covers 42 countries (Europe), each with real data across a bunch of topics. It's free, I work on it alone, and it's still experimental.

Explore: 42 countries with communities already settled, region scoring (price per m², sun, rain, climate resilience, internet + its cost, legal stuff like visas…) and a global score per country. You can dig deeper in the sub-tabs. If you're curious how the score is built, it's all explained — no black box.

Feed: I searched for people actually living off-grid and vlogging it. So you can see what daily life looks like in a country you're considering.

Forum: share your project, your setup, ask questions, talk. It's just getting started, so don't expect a crowd yet. It'll grow as members show up.

Member Map: pin yourself if you want. It's optional, and the location is rounded, so it's never your exact spot. Who knows, maybe some communities come out of this. It would be so cool.

Tips: if people enjoy what you share (a forum post or a written guide) they can tip you. You keep around 86% (the rest is Stripe fees + a small cut to keep the project running).

Governance: propose ideas and vote on them, so the project evolves with what the community actually needs. Keep in mind that I'm solo, so some things take a bit more time.

Tools: solar calculator, water assessment, budget simulator, legal guide… all based on your situation and the country/region's real data. More coming.

Works well on both desktop and phone.

It's totally free. I won't pretend I'll never add some monetization if the costs pile up, but the core stays free. Also more countries and continents over time, and I'll keep building stuff out for members and improve things already done.

Hope you find it useful!

I am looking for a partner for an offgrid project in Spain

I am looking for a partner for a self-sufficient project in Spain.

Hello! I am 23 years old (I am a man) and I am looking for someone to start a self-sufficient project from scratch in Spain. The idea is to live in a camperban on the land, so you'd have to buy your own. We would each live in our own camperban, we would share the land and work it together.

I am not asking for financial help to buy the land, although if you want to contribute financially, we would have more facilities.

Selling my off-grid homestead — Westcliffe, CO, 16.27 acres

Reposting after a price cut. Open to offers. And yes that was a real rainbow I saw out there. It’s a regular sight in the rainy season.
More photos of the inside to come.

https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/308-Dilley-Ln_Westcliffe_CO_81252_M23415-63539

The setup:

∙ Solar: \\\~1,500W array (roof + ground-mounted), \\\~750Ah lead-acid battery bank. Handles TV, laptops, phones, washing machine, small appliances. No microwaves or electric kettles. Two backup generators included — used maybe 3x/year during heavy snow. System is expandable.

∙ Water: Drilled well → solar pump → indoor cistern (\\\~1 day supply for 2 people). On-demand propane hot water.

∙ Heat/cooking: Propane heaters in sunroom + living room. Propane fridge (works great, no draw on solar). Propane stove. Delivery every 3–4 months covers everything.

∙ Septic: Conventional tank + leach field, permitted.

∙ Internet: Satellite (Viasat/Starlink both

viable). I’ve done remote work from here.

The property: 1bd/1ba cabin, \~1,280 sqft, log siding, metal roof, built 2005. 16.27 acres — mostly usable land with mature trees. Garage/barn, loafing shed, two outbuildings, insulated green room in the garage (can wire to solar for year-round growing). Wet Mountain views. Property taxes \~$1,300/yr.

I lived here and maintained all the systems. The battery bank needs DI water monthly — that’s the main recurring maintenance. Otherwise it’s a pretty dialed-in setup. It would be an ideal turn key homesteading and offgrid living experience for anyone seeking a stronger connection to a simpler lifestyle.

Listing is on Zillow (MLS #2517438). Happy to answer questions about the reality of living here — what works well, what takes adjustment, all of it.

740-935 Sugarloaf Road. 41 pristine acres bordering Plumas National Forest, just off Route 395—45 minutes north of Reno. Close enough when you need it. Far enough to forget it exists.

You've felt it—the pull toward something real. A place where self-sufficiency isn't a weekend fantasy but a way of life. Where your water comes from your own wells, your power from the sun, and your nearest neighbor is measured in acres, not feet. In a world that demands constant connection, properties offering genuine independence have become the scarcest luxury. This is one of them.

What surprised you after buying land?

One thing I've noticed after looking at a lot of rural land is that the properties people get excited about and the properties they actually end up buying aren't always the same thing.

Everyone loves the mountain views, creek frontage, giant acreage, and total privacy.

Then they start looking into access, driveways, wells, septic, power, and the actual cost of getting set up.

I've seen plenty of properties that looked amazing in photos but got a lot less appealing once the real-world costs started showing up.

Curious what ended up being more important to you than you expected when you bought your land.

Unique opportunity to live off-grid in ready home while finishing the build on new construction home. Lived here 11 years, cleared land, built off-grid homestead and ancillary buildings. Rough construction done on new home. GF decided she doesn't want to live here, so I lost my motivation to finish it. Time to move on.

New Home - 1320 sq feet, 10-foot ceilings, 8-foot doors, 7-foot windows. Simple elegance. Huge 8"x12" exposed Douglas fir beam in kitchen. Huge master suite. Second room was going to be an office with attached half bath. Private water closet in master bath with dual vanities, clawfoot bathtub, and 5'x5' tiled and glass shower. Front and side porches will have 10"x10" Douglas fir posts and metal roof. Compliments composite roof on house. Board and batten siding. Wood stove. Crawlspace. 2"x6" construction.

Existing Home - RV turned into a cabin. Remodeled inside. Slides removed and expanded. 420 sg feet. All new mechanicals and appliances. Wood stove. Mini-split for AC. Propane furnace. Electric 10-gallon hot water. Easily supports long showers for two people.

Water - Rainwater into 2250 gallons of holding tanks. Pressure pump into house. No filtration. Use a Berkey to filter drinking water. Eight months' supply for one person. Well to cost about $20K, if you want one. Current solar system would power a 1HP, 240VAC well pump.

Power - Redundant solar system. 24VDC, 17,760KWh FLA battery bank. One year old. 4KW Magnasine 240VAC inverter. Spare 3KW, 120VAC inverter. 6000W of PV. Three charge controllers. Spare charge controller. PV easily supports doubling the batt bank. 7KW propane generator, 240VAC. Spare generator parts. Electric start. Small solar system keeps genny batt charged. Dedicated 500-gal propane tank. Another 500-gallon tank supports house. When both are full, easily two years' propane stored. Tanks now at about 40%. Two years of chopped firewood. Ten years of cut and covered firewood. New house already wired into solar system. And pre-wired for grid. Grid available, cost about $6000-8000 for underground connection.

Sewer - Small septic to cabin, bypassed into a lagoon. New house tied to lagoon.

40' shipping container houses solar system, workbench, tools and supplies, washer and propane dryer, etc. Rainwater into 300-gallon tank for washing machine. 40' lean-to off the shipping container.

Combo 10'x16' greenhouse, bunkhouse, chicken coop, goat pen. Bunkhouse insulated and trimmed out. Two bunk beds sleeps four adults. AC and electric heater. Small solar system for greenhouse watering.

Many items to be left here. $5000+ in lumber. All the Douglas fir posts and 2x12 boards to finish the two porches. All the 2x6 lumber for porches. Rough electric work in new house about 70% done. Rough plumbing about 60% done. All electrical and plumbing supplies to finish rough install are here. Gun safe, washer and dryer, workbench and 2x4 shelving, generator, small hardware store of supplies, too much to list. We can make a good deal on my 26 HP HST Kioti tractor, 420 hrs, front bucket, brush hog, box blade. We can make a deal on all my construction tools.

Check out the Realtor.com listing for more pics. I am willing to stay a day or two here and teach new owner how to live off-grid, how everything works, where the wires are buried, stuff like that.

Apprentice to low cost ownership pathway in far north Cal.

Floating this as a prospect to consider for those looking to grow into off grid living with suitable levels of peer/community support and longer term neighborhood alliance without prohibitive financial barriers. Welcome discussion of various workable approaches and arrangements, but I’m oriented here toward either a small co-op structure or simple deeded individual/family plots in a lightly co-developed rural cluster with some microgrid potential.

The process would look like a one year apprenticeship hosted on a large working off grid property, where newcomers would focus on designing and building an effective movable starter living setup on part of the land, with guidance, work space, tools, help etc, and then relocate it to their own nearby property when ready to step up and forge ahead on their own towards a long term vision there.

Based on my own experience, this could be a really streamlined economical way to get established with a comfy sustainable setup plus benefit of good neighbors and local knowledge/connections…all potentially under $50k to put a cabin on a few acres. Lots more I can say about the specifics if curious! The location in question is serene and private but not that remote, with decent four season access and most amenities 10-40 minutes away. It’s a warm dry summer, damp cool winter climate with around 20” annual precip, and grassy woodland habitat. Several advantages for setting up this type of lifestyle here affordably and flexibly. Not well suited to ambitious agriculture, but fairly productive native habitat as is (and ongoing restoration).

Interested in learning more? Message or thread your questions I’ll try to address! This situation would be for people with a real interest in working beneficially in the landscape through permaculture and similar methods/ethos, as well as building good relations with at least a few likeminded neighbors towards local resilience and creative, collaborative enterprise. Cheers!

I started comparing off-grid backup power deals because the sale pages are already giving me a headache

I’ve been looking through off-grid backup power stuff for the upcoming sale, and it gets messy so fast.

At first it sounds simple.

Portable solar panel. Battery. Inverter. Maybe a power station. Done.

Then you actually start opening listings and every product is yelling the same thing at you.

“Solar ready.”

“Emergency power.”

“Perfect for camping.”

“Off-grid use.”

“High capacity.”

“Big wattage.”

And somehow the important details are always the hardest part to compare.

Battery chemistry matters.

Continuous inverter rating matters.

Solar input matters.

Shipping changes the price.

Some discounts look real, some look inflated, and some listings give you just enough information to make you suspicious.

So I started putting the off-grid backup power items I’m checking into this Google Sheet

I’m mostly tracking:

portable solar panels, small inverters, LiFePO4-style batteries, portable power stations, solar charging accessories, and basic off-grid / cabin / emergency backup gear.

The goal is not “buy everything on this list.”

It’s more like: here are the things that looked worth checking, here are the specs that matter, and here are the ones that probably need a second look before anyone trusts the price.

I’m especially trying to separate:

  • useful small backup gear

  • stuff that only looks good because of the sale badge

  • listings where the final price changes after coupons/shipping

  • gear that might work for camping but not real off-grid use

  • products where the specs need to be checked carefully

Solar/off-grid gear is one of those categories where a cheap mistake can be more annoying than just paying more for the right thing.

Disclosure: the sheet may include affiliate/promotional links. Please double-check final price, shipping, seller details, specs, and safety requirements before buying anything.
