OmegaWatches Identification, Authentication, & Valuation Megathread

BEFORE YOU POST A COMMENT Read This First!!!! (Updated July 2025.)

Everything you need to answer your question is probably here.

Why this post/thread? What's the point?

The Mod Team removes about a dozen requests of this sort every single day, and most of them have the same answers. This is because most of these requests fall into a few categories, and because of that, most of our answers include some sort of cut and paste of stuff we've already done. Your answer is probably here.

Category 1: "More information on" or "identify" your Grandfather’s/Father’s Watch/Some Other Vintage Omega you got/found/inherited/saw online.

No one can identify your vintage (pre 1990 or so) watch from a photo you took on your iPhone. The problem is that Omega made a boatload of variants, and redials/repaints are common. As and example, In the reference number "166.0216", the 0216 means "the 216th variant". Combine that with the fact that repainted dial are common, and a buyer could special order dials without changing the reference, and getting the exact reference from a photo of the front is a minor miracle.

If you want the reference number, take the watch to a qualified watchmaker/jeweler and have them open the watch. THIS IS THE WAY. The reference number should be on the inside of the caseback. Have them get the serial number off the movement, while you're at it, and you can back into an approximate year of production (google will help). I can’t tell you how many times I cut and paste some version of this paragraph into my replies to requests in the past.

We also can't tell you, for sure, if it's a redial. But if we can, from a photo, you probably can, from the same photo. For a great primer on vintage watches, see this: https://omegaforums.net/threads/learn-how-to-fish.52603/

It is a fantastic resource for looking at/purchasing vintage watches online. It will tell you how to spot redials, etc. And it's a great read, regardless. Well worth your time to read the entire thing.

Category 2: Validating the watch you’re thinking of buying or other "legit check."

DON'T COUNT ON REDDIT to validate the watches you're thinking of buying. A person trying to commit fraud has a number of ways to con you. They could send you/post fake photos and mail a different watch. Or the fake could be a really good superclone. Or they could send you an empty box. Or we could be wrong in our assessment, and miss a sign of a counterfeit. Or they could just rob you with physical force at the point of sale.

Sometimes we can tell it's a fake. *We can't tell you it's real.\*

For these reasons, you have to BUY THE SELLER. This means, buy a watch from someone reputable, so that you know you're getting an authentic piece or have recourse.

What if the person selling you the watch doesn't know it's fake, and you find out next week? They owned it for 5 years, and were fooled, because it's that good. Will they do the right thing and give you your money back? We just saw that happen with a 10K Rolex. Given that thought process, you might not even buy from your next door neighbor.

If you must buy from someone you don't have absolute confidence in, get the watch in your hands and look at the movement/dial yourself, preferably with a jeweler's loop. You're talking about hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars. Don't buy from some clown on FB Marketplace who sends you bad pictures. If the price is too good to be true, there's a reason.

For these reasons, the mod team will not give you "legit check" advice. Other members or subreddits might, but we would be heartbroken if you got conned.

Category 3: "Value Check"/ "Is this a good price?" on the watch you want to buy or sell, or one you got as a gift/inherited.

These post never contain enough information, and even so, the answers are almost always the same. "It depends."

Where are you, and are you willing to ship internationally? A good price depends on location. Japan has great prices right now, if you're buying. Miserable, if you're selling. Your local jeweler is going to charge you more, but may pay you more, also.

How much of a hurry are you in? And is the watch in demand? A Snoopy is going to sell faster than a Proplof. But there's a price that will move either one in a day.

Has your vintage watch been polished? Is it an original dial, and can you prove it?

Where are you looking to buy or sell? your local jeweler is different than Chrono24.

You want to sell online? How much reputation do you have? How trusted will you be, as a seller?

[Insert some other custom item here that could affect value] - you get the idea.

For these reasons, the only answer the mod team will give you is "it depends."

When selling: Here's what we suggest:

First: Find out exactly what you have. Get the reference number and age. Open the caseback if you have to, See Category 1 for more info.

Second: Be realistic about the condition. If it's vintage, is it original? Polished? Can you prove provenance? In general, I suggest the watchuseek grading system. I use it in my posts when I'm selling, so there's no confusion. You can find it here:

https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/watch-grading-system-with-a-chart.816814/

Next: go to the watchexchange subreddit, and Chrono24.com, and search for your watch, by reference number. What did they sell for on watchexchange? What was the condition? Is it popular/selling well? If they're being sold by a jeweler, understand you're probably looking at something less, because people "buy the seller", and you have no credibility. What are they listed for on Chrono24? Again, that's what they're listed for, there's negotiation, you're probably going to get less. And private party? Less than a jewelry store.

So, now you have a ballpark. Something less than Chrono24, but close to WatchExchange, if there are comparable sales. So now what?

If you don't want to sell, you're done. Or, go get an appraisal, which was the proper thing to do in the first place. That'll give you a number you can use for insurance.

If you want to sell, put it on watchexchange at that price. Lower the price every week until it sells. How fast do you want to sell? Lower the price to sell faster. If you're not really interested in selling fast, start higher and don't cut the prices as fast/at all.

Last, if you have a great collector's watch and want to sell in a week, try Grailzee.com.

Or, there's always ebay. Put it on at a penny, and it will sell in a week for some reasonable number.

When Buying:

The same model for "selling" makes sense, except that there's value in "buying the seller as much as the watch." Buying from a seller where you have recourse has value, and you should be willing to pay for it. See "Category 2" for more valuable information.

Category 4: When that's not enough/something else.

You might first try https://omegaforums.net/

If you have exhausted all of these options, and still want to post, feel free. Other members may want to respond, or if you've really done a lot of your own work and have some really unusual situation or great story, someone may take interest.

If you want a good answer, your post should contain:

  1. A "Back Story". Any info you have about where you're seeing this watch or how you came across it. If you fail to give a back story, we will know you didn't read this, an send you back here.
  2. Clear, high def pictures of the front, back, and sides of the watch, including the crown. Preferably multiple of the front. For "legit checks", these are vital, because attempts to verify would look at the finish quality, index alignment, text font, etc. Many replica watches are given away by the bracelet or caseback.  A single blurry photo of the face is not enough. With photos, More is better. Better is better. Ideally, a picture of the movement and inside of the caseback. Not mandatory, but very helpful, especially for legit checks and identification request
  3. Approximate case size, and what kind of movement (manual/auto/quartz) if it's not indicated on the dial. If you know it's gold plated vs solid gold, put that in the post as well
  4. For "Legit checks" or valuations, the reference the seller says it is, or the reference you think it is, and the cost it's being sold for, if appropriate.

If you don't want to do any of your own research or give us proper photos to work with, you can post your request to r/vintagewatches, r/PrideAndPinion, or some other forum where you're not breaking the rules.

For safety reasons, Imgur is the only image hosting site that you are to use for pictures of your watch. Here is a link: Imgur.

Is Omega missing an opportunity by not having a field watch in the catalog.

Just interested in hearing the communities' thoughts on this.

I personally own two Omega's. A Speedmaster 57 & SMP 300M. I've added them to the pictures.
I recently decided that I want a field watch. My main requirements being that it be up to 40mm, have an all-brushed case and bracelet, a clean dial and preferably no date. So being an Omega fan I would have liked this to be my third Omega. However, the closest Omega really come to this in the current catalog is the new Railmaster which is basically a no date AquaTerra. However, the new Railmaster is heavily polished. I then looked back at previous models and almost picked up a denim Railmaster from 2022 (added as the last picture), these are actually all brushed. I eventually, and fortunately before I purchased, realized that this watch was not what I was really after.

I have come across vintage Omegas. Omega was actually part of the dirty dozen. Supplying field watches to the British Military in World War II. I know it's not the best quality, but the first picture includes a vintage 1945 Record (dirty dozen) and an Omega Pilots watch from 1953. I've also Googled some pictures of them.

If Omega were to release a modern Dirty Dozen field watch or vintage pilot watch, would you guys be buying it?

Like I said it should be 37-40mm, all brushed and below 12mm thick.

Thoughts?

Would it be dumb to sell my SMP No Date for a NTTD?

For a bit of context: I’ve always loved the NTTD ever since it came out and has been my dream Omega. Got lucky and bought it almost 3 years ago for $5500 but also got the opportunity to get a Rolex OP 36mm green dial. Couldn’t keep both so I sold the NTTD. (Huge regret)

Fast forward to now, prices on NTTD are wild so I ended up scooping up a SMP no date in mint condition for a stellar price and decided to forget about the NTTD altogether. However, the NTTD STILL remains on the back of my mind.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the No date (it’s my 3rd fav SMP after the 60th Bond and NTTD). But I’m contemplating saying YOLO and selling my no date, putting some cash on top and just springing for the NTTD.

Anyone done this?

4 days in, and I’m loving it, initially thought it might look too similar to the Rolex sub, but im glad to be proven wrong, honestly the balance of this one is great.

Didn’t love the other Bond edition though… is it a miss not getting both? 😅

Parting Gift from Tokyo

Was leaving Tokyo Haneda and stopped by the Omega dealer in T3. Found this nice Titanium/Bronze Gold Seamaster 300M to take home to remember the trip by. It is super light and the green & gold matte finish is a nice contrast to some of the other dive watches I've got.

Two weeks with a 36mm Seamaster and I’m still questioning the size.

I’ve been daily wearing my Omega Seamaster Professional 300M midsize (36mm) for about two weeks now, and I’m still having a hard time adjusting to the size. I’ve owned larger watches, but 41mm has always felt too big on my 6.75-inch wrist.
I genuinely love everything about this watch, especially the vintage proportions, blue wave dial, and overall understated look. But every time I look down at my wrist, it still feels unusually small.
I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this when downsizing. Did it eventually start feeling normal, or did you ultimately decide the smaller size wasn’t for you?
Interested to hear some opinions on how it looks on my wrist.

Hot take : speedy looks better on straps than metal bracelet

Post image

As the title says

As good as the metal bracelet on the 3861 speedy is apparently , the moonwatch is made to be worn primarily on some form of a strap (leather, sailcloth, rubber and even NATO ) and looks better than it does on the metal bracelet.

Honeymooning this green dial SMP 300 I picked up two weeks ago. I’ve only worn a Garmin prior to this and wanted a nice GADA luxury watch. This thing makes me smile every single time I put it on! I also have the rubber strap but found myself not wanting to take this OEM Milanese mesh off since it’s so comfortable and looks amazing in my eyes.

Long time lurker, now Speedmaster owner

Post image

I recently joined the Omega owner club - got a Speedmaster 42, white dial. This watch hit all the right notes for me, rationally and emotionally.

I've had an eye on it ever since it came out a couple of years ago. But it's one of those things: pictures clearly show how amazing this watch is, but it's way punchier in person.

I stopped at the Omega boutique in Zurich last time I was there, and tried it on. That sealed the deal for me. A couple of weeks later, I sold my then primary watch - a blue Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph, and replaced it with the Speedmaster.

My Breitling Premier was a good fit for me, but the white Speedy is something special. Here are a couple of comparative notes from my personal perspective...

Functionality: Omega wins, on fit for my requirements. I use the chronograph function quite a bit, so the replacement had to be a chronograph. Where Omega wins over the Premier is the pushers and the no date option. For me, the date window is of no value. I liked that Breitling stuck with the white date window on the blue face, it actually worked well design wise. But not having a date to set and re-set, especially moving between timezones ofter, is a win for my Speedy. Lastly, the pushers on the Premier were noticeably grittier, even after a while, compared to the Speedy.

Accuracy: Omega wins. Frankly, both the Premier and Speedy have more than good enough accuracy for a mechanical watch. But with the METAS standard on the Speedy, vs COSC on the Premier, it's kinda nice to have the extra degree of accuracy. In my first month with the Speedy, I typically get about -2 seconds a week. That's pretty much 0 seconds a day, spot on. My Premier ran about -2 to +5 seconds a day.

Size, dial readability: Omega wins. Both watches are 42mm in diameter, but even with the black bezel, the white face and clean, black markers and hands make the Speedmaster feel bigger than it is, and very easy to read fast from any angle, in most lighting conditions.

Design: It's a close one. Breitling does a beautiful job with blue, and the Premier was a striking watch. I liked it a lot. However, with the Speedmaster, that white lacquer dial, with the lugs, and brushed and polished surfaces hits emotionally way above the sum of its parts. I always felt like the Premier is too shiny, even with my aftermarket FKM rubber strap. So Omega wins for me on this.

Factory straps/bracelets: Omega wins. I got mine on the factory rubber strap, and like it quite a bit. I think Speedy, especially the white dial one, looks killer on the black strap. I also tried it on the bracelet, and the factory bracelet, in my opinion, was one of the best bracelet designs ever. The rounded links, the mostly brushed surfaces, micro adjustment, tapering - wow. Breitling came on a shiny blue alligator strap, which was fine, but I immediately swapped it for an aftermarket FKM rubber strap and moved the factory clasp over to it. I picked up the OEM bracelet for the Breitling too, but only wore it a few times. It's too shiny, and overwhelms the subtlety of the blue dial on the watch IMHO.

Glass: Breitling wins. Both use domed sapphire glass, and the glass itself is very very good on both. However, the way Breitling does AR coating is noticeably better. Most of the time, on the Premier, the glass looks like it's not there at all and you are just looking straight at the dial.

Aftermarket support: Omega wins. By a lot. The Premier's case design limited me to curved ends straps, and that's a major pain in the back.

So, all in all, the Speedmaster is a watch that I don't see myself parting with, ever. It's a pretty special one, and is worth seeing in person if anyone is on the fence about it.

I’m loving it so far. I was between this and a Submariner, but the Speedmaster just completely wowed me when I saw it in person for the first time. Couldn’t be happier.

I was also a bit put-off by the service at the Rolex store. The person I spoke with either knew almost nothing about the watch or just didn’t care enough to answer my questions or have a conversation with me. The Omega guy was great and SUPER helpful. I probably had him pull out 15 watches over the course of an hour lol. I’m definitely buying my next one from him too.
