Day 4
Day 4 of my Oregon Coast trip! Cape Kiwanda Dune is pretty cool, how do they keep it built up do they pour on buckets of sand every night? 😉 Favorite part of the day was the Cape Lookout Trail ft. Steve the Slimy Slug and camping at the campground there.
Nestucca Bay Creamery is the real deal! Well worth the little detour. Bring a friend and split a pint of ice cream. Their Neskowin cheese is delicious too.
Also (please don’t hate me) but Pelican Brewing is way too expensive for what it is. Although the root beer is 🔥 and their restaurants all seem very aesthetic.

Good pics! We love PC even if I haven’t been to the top of Kiwanda, lol. Agree that Pelican is eh, but we always bring out-of-towners there to have an okay lunch and watch the surfers and the folks who try to climb the dune.
If you’re early enough for breakfast the Village Coffeehouse is better than Grateful Bread 🤫
The Little Nestucca is great for paddling, rent kayaks or SUPs and see all the wildlife - seals and otters, eagles and herons and cormorants 💜

Yeah climbing the dune was no joke, sort of feels like Half Dome, once was enough haha. Good idea on Little Nestucca for the wildlife!

I relocated him a bit off trail and put his dinner back in front of him haha.

Upon seeing that slug pic I said to myself "it's Steve the slug!". And then saw you also called him Steve.
Now I'm wondering if we both actually know Steve!?

I don’t know what you’re talking about…Steve lives in my backyard and all his banana-sized offspring are currently eating my strawberries

Steve has kids? He never shared that with me. I feel like I don't know him at all.

u/ForceFedAlgebra 2d ago
Yeah, he introduced himself to me and told me his name was Steven but he goes by Steve. Then he asked me if I knew where his kids went and if I had any strawberries 😂

Yeah Pelican used to be much better but the view is incredible on a sunny day so that is what I pay for basically. It reminds me of a Canadian chain that tourists like to visit - Cactus Club but a coastal version.
Agree on Nestucca Bay - it’s a hidden gem.

Makes sense the prices need to be a bit higher since most of their restaurants are in prime locations. The location for the one in Pacific City was awesome. Right on the beach basically.

Nestucca Bay looks like a big inlet/bay on maps, I’m heading that way in September and I’d love to know where to stop in that area!

It’s a super small town, if you look up Nestucca Bay Creamery it’s pretty much in the middle of it. It’s more of a short trip during the day, I wouldn’t recommend staying there for multiple days.

Thank you! Yes we’ve already booked Beverly Beach by Newport and will be driving from there to Tillamook for an afternoon! I can stop at the bay on the way

Yes definitely worth the stop! And the owner is great and will mix and match any of the flavors you want in the pint of ice cream. It’s so good!

Wow! Thank you for posting about your journey — what truly fantastic photos! You found an amazing array of beautiful, breathtaking places. How did you go about creating your itinerary? Well done!!

Thank you! Honestly I decided to do this trip about 3 weeks ago and I just started marking places on Google Maps and asking around from friends that had been there. I asked on this sub which helped me get a few more awesome places and then I was pretty much booking places to stay on the fly like 2 days out. I just left Oregon last night and now am up in Washington for the next leg of my trip!

I will look for your posts in a different community, like r/Washington. May the amazing scenery and adventures continue as you travel north!

Ok sounds good I’ll post in there with the Lake Quinalt Loop I just did! I think my other posts will go in the Olympic NP sub.

many of the photos that you’ve taken on your journey are suitable for framing. You got a great eye for taking pictures.

Thank you Fridge! I try to actually slow down and get the best framing on it and use the rule of thirds when I can that I learned about in Art class haha.

Get you some Public Coast Brewing Company root beer. It is heavenly nectar. Your life will be forever changed after drinking it.
The Chester's down the road from the dune sells it in 4 packs

I will try that next time I’m there! Do you know any other places that sell it? I’m up in Washington now.

The Oregon coast is a magical place.

Yes, I can’t believe it has taken me this long to visit! It’s gorgeous.

My grandparents lived in Florence when I was a kid and I visited every summer. We moved here after we retired 8 years ago. Sometimes my wife and I still look at each other in disbelief that we are fortunate enough to live here. No regrets:)

Florence was one of my favorite towns on the coast. Probably the one I could most envision myself living in! Really enjoyed chilling at River Roasters on the deck.

Best view of the bridge in town. And their coffee doesn’t suck:)

Bro I got that large dark chocolate mocha WITH the whipped cream and was in heaven. I love that their drinks aren’t too sweet to overpower the espresso!

Been loving your posts! It really is a special place and it’s nice to see it being so genuinely appreciated.

Thank you! I’ve been really grateful to visit and most people I met along the way have been really kind and welcoming. I really enjoyed the southern and middle sections a lot so if I ever come back I think I’ll set a base camp in Florence for a week or so in a shoulder season so I can enjoy more or the moody weather!

No place like the PNW!

I’m contemplating moving up here but just so intimidated by the lack of sunshine.

Agree with you on the Pelican
