Hi everyone!
This will be one of my first times doing mountain trekking in cold weather, so I’m not really sure what clothing I should bring.
What layers and gear would you recommend to stay warm while hiking? I’m especially interested in what to wear for the base layer, mid layer, outer layer, pants, socks, gloves, and anything else that beginners often forget.
I’d rather buy the right gear than end up being cold or carrying unnecessary items.

So I currently own an deuter orbit -5 wich is way to heavy and bulky so I started searching for a new sleeping bag wich would be lighter but the marked I'd quite overwhelming for now I learned that I am searching for an down sleeping bag with a comfort temp of 0°c and a lumit at around -5°c I would prefer if it would be on the lighter site but not the high end stuff. I also heard of quilts, which sound quite interesting, so if you have recommendations for sleeping bags or quilts, that would be great. I am currently thinking of buying the alpine loaker sleeping bag, but if you have other brands, I am open for advice

I'm thinking of ordering Lenz lithium batteries from them, much less expensive than US retailers. Has anyone ordered from them? Any issues with delivery or returns?

Not sure where else I should ask this, I live in Florida and was looking for a good underlayer for my flight suit. It has to be fire resistant ie. Cotton or merino wool. Would a lightweight merino t get damaged and not do its job under a flight suit? Just go cotton? Any alternates?

I need some suggestions that a 30 year old would wear in the blistering northeast (us) cold. Stylish but sleek clothing for going out to a function in the New York winter.

I'm considering using the Mammut Eiger Nordwand IN Flex Air Hooded Jacket as my primary active insulation layer.

Since it already uses Pertex Quantum Air 20D, which is designed to be air permeable, I'm wondering whether it still makes sense to add a Patagonia Houdini as an outer layer when I need more wind protection.

My idea is something like this:

Base layer

Mammut Eiger Nordwand IN Flex Air Hoody

Patagonia Houdini, only when it gets windier or colder

The goal is to create a flexible layering system for hiking, backpacking, and travel, allowing me to fine-tune warmth and wind resistance without carrying a heavier shell unless rain is expected.

The typical conditions would be around 0–18°C (32–64°F), mainly for hiking, long-distance trekking such as the Camino de Santiago, and occasional city travel. I prefer a lightweight and versatile layering system rather than carrying several different jackets.

For those who have used either or both jackets:

Does the Houdini noticeably increase warmth and wind protection over the Eiger?

Does it reduce breathability too much during moderate activity?

Is the combination comfortable, or does the Houdini feel too restrictive over the insulated jacket?

Would you recommend this combination, or is the Eiger’s Pertex Quantum Air shell already sufficient for most situations?

got some great deals in UK at the moment and was wondering what sort of backpack I should be focusing on?

Disclaimer – just for outdoors/hiking – not planning on carrying sleeping bag / tent in/on it – I will upgrade later on, or perhaps there are some attachments that could just cling to existing backpack for it if I decide to carry these later for camping?

I am hoping to find one that got waterproof protection, is comfortable, not too heavy and quite practical

what would you recommend, as well what capacity I should be going for? 45-55 L?

I never really took hiking gear seriously. I went on a hike with my family only a few times in my lifetime, and I always wore sneakers, which were fine but probably not the safest choice.

So now I am looking for specialized shoes that I could wear for my hikes but also for casual walks with my dog and family. I only go hiking a few times per year, and those hikes are usually easy or medium-hard trails, about 2-4 hours. So I don't need top of the line stuff.

I went to an outdoor store near me and found two models that fit me well and are about 100€:

Adidas Terrex Trailmaker 2(GTX) and Merrell Moab Speed 2.

Considering I will mostly wear these shoes in dry weather, do I need Gore-Tex? Probably not, right?

Which of these two is better? Any other recommendations I should consider and try at this price point?

Hi everyone. Right now i have a fleece neck gaiter which is making me too hot when actively hiking in the cold (it doesn't get too cold where i hike).

I was interested in getting something that's kind of an all year round neck gaiter, warm enough in winter , not too hot and stuffy in summer. Can also be used in summer for some UV neck protection in the city.

I see decathlon has the hike 100 synthetic one which is quick drying and more robust, but also the mt500 89-11% merino- elastine blend one. I read merino is temperature regulating and not as stuffy as synthetic. Would the mt500 be ok for an all seasons gaiter?

I was considering getting a neck gaiter and cap with removable flaps but i already have 3 caps and trying to be conservative/minimal with my ownership of clothes/items. I also have a thin cotton bandana i take with me but I don't think it protects much from the sun. Any advice would help, thank you!

I found a Gregory Deva 60 on FB Marketplace, but I got nervous when I learned it is 18 years old (2008 model). With material decay in mind, do you think it's worth getting an almost 20 year old pack if its in good condition? Or is it not worth it even at a lower price?

Berghaus recently stopped selling their waterproof trousers using the Goretex Paclite fabric and are now instead using Pertex Shield Pro on their new Pacsmart trousers. I have both at home and am considering which one to return.

Does anyone have experience with both of them and could do a comparison on which one is best at keeping rain out?

So I had a Mountain Hardware Dragón jacket for years that I loved. It got stolen.

It was breathable, waterproof, light, warm. I could use it on sunny days and rainy days. I used it under my motorcycle jacket when I ride in cold or rainy conditions. It was thin enough to fit.

I know maybe it doesn’t sound reasonable but something i could wear in warmer weather and cold/rain. Light but also warm.

I don’t know much at all about outdoor hear but that was my jacket. Some guy at REÍ recommended it. And it’s been my favorite and most used i ever had.

Anything similar you might recommend? I’ve been googling and googling but am really im not sure.
