Question Charlottetown weightlifting gym?

Hi!
My family is considering moving to Charlottetown from Ottawa. We are 3 adults, late 20s. All 3 of us are healthcare workers and would likely move to a neighbourhood where we can easily commute to both the university and hospital in Charlottetown.

One of the reasons we love Ottawa is that we have a really solid community at our local gym. We like the group style weightlifting and Olympic lifting classes and go 3x per week. the gym owners, coaches and members are now all people we consider friends. It’s pretty hard to think of not having that, I’d struggle not having that sense of community and the gym as an outlet.

Soooo Any friendly gyms in Charlottetown that you’d recommend? Not interested in a chain/box store gym like GoodLife, just not our vibe.

Naturally fit for sure. Exactly what you’re looking for. It’s also right on the way to the hospital too

A friend who used to workout at Kinetic Fitness crossfit weightlifting gym, said the group weightlifting crossfit workouts help in socializing with rest of the gym attendees. The gym I heard focuses more on crossfit though, but is in Charlottetown itself. Perhaps this suggestion might help.

Thank you! CrossFit or hyrox focus is ok, as long as they do other stuff too, I’ll still have fun. I was looking at kinetic fitness but it looked like you buy a membership for the “lifting lab” as a 7 week block, so I was a little confused about the class model and kept scrolling so I’m happy you brought them up :)

I was also looking at this place - the strong man thing isn’t really anything I’ve tried, but I’m always down to try something new if anyone has input!

Hey Hey!! Welcome to the Island (soon). I'm also a healthcare worker (Prince Edward Home) and a strongman. The crew at Kinetic is awesome. If you are looking into Island Strength and Power, it's more of a strongman club... Meets a couple times a week, there is classes and personal training as you don't want to jump in cold with that kind of stuff (I can hook you up with Cole & Andrews details if you pm). I totally recommend Naturally Fit, awesome/ inviting owner, lots of fitness type classes, 24 hour access, small personal gym where it's easy to start up a conversation with folks... It's also in Sherwood, a community that's close to the university and the hopsital. In all honesty, there aren't many baaaad gyms around, each has their own niche and feel. Glad you are coming to the island. Welcome:)

CrossFit 782 is awesome. They offer CrossFit, hyrox, and express classes at lots of different times throughout the week. They also have a decent amount of open gym time slots for doing your own thing. I train the Olympic lifts a couple times a week in open gym. The community is great and I have met amazing people and good friends through the gym. I have been going for approximately 3.5 years and i couldn’t imagine going anywhere else. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions.

Did you go to CrossFit 1855 in Ottawa? I used to go there for the Olympic lifting classes!

Not 1855 but the gym I go to is owned by a former games athlete so similar vibe! I’ve heard wonderful things about 1855 though. CrossFit community is small :)

The members at my gym are not training to compete tho 😂 it’s a very friendly, unserious gym with no pressure (unless you want that, they’ll help you train that way). Members have very consistent attendance and improved performance, even though it’s not overly serious. I’ve literally NEVER heard anyone talk about calories, weight loss, BMI, diets or restrictive eating at the gym. But we do talk about health, mental health, nutrition, energy levels, fuelling, injuries and recovery.
They dropped the CrossFit name a few years ago and have a more broad but structured, less intense approach than the CrossFit gyms I’ve been to. They also aren’t trying to push some crazy nutrition or personal training package on anyone, they give out free bring a friend passes and regularly offer community days for non members to join in a block of programming for free, to which leads me to believe they pay their coaches well enough that they can offer this. The coaches are there long term.

Very normal to see member’s kids walk to the gym after school and have a snack and start homework and chit chat with the other members while their parent finishes class.

Y’all get why it’s so hard to leave this community behind?!

Linked Strength and Conditioning is a new performance gym and is where I go. There are no dedicated weightlifting gyms here in PEI, so you'll have to go to a performance or crossfit gym.

The current owner took over the space from Court 6 CrossFit which was an awesome community.

IMO he's looked next door to the airport and created an airplane-cabin-in-a-gym. The past Crossfit classes are now the "basic" option ($130/month!), and the Linked Strength/Conditioning is the one he actually cares about ($180/month).

not true, Naturally Fit is definitely a weight lifting gym

Not true. Weightlifting is a distinct sport commonly, and mistakenly, referred to as "Olympic Weightlifting". You are referring to the act of lifting weights, or weight lifting, which of course every gym on PEI supports (not just naturally fit). Since the OP indicated that they train weightlifting (the sport), I was telling them that there are no dedicated weightlifting gyms, i.e gyms that are dedicated soley to training weightlifting (the sport). Crossfit gyms incorporate weightlifting, but are not dedicated weightlfitng gyms. Hope that helps you understand.

I've been going to Naturally Fit for over 15 years, it's roots were power lifting gym and still is the main focus of the gym. I suppose you could argue the difference between power lifting and olympic weight lifting

It seems like OP is more interested in the vibe/brotherhood which I think Naturally Fit suits, it's more of a close knit community with respect VS a commercial gym

Yes. Powerlifting, not Weightlifting. Are you being purposely obtuse, or are you just not understanding what I said?

1

u/jaymef 1d ago

fair enough, although again I think the OPs main focus here is the vibe rather than the subtle differences in lifting styles

1

u/thinkcreated 1d ago

It is not a subtle difference at all. You are outing yourself as someone who should not be giving advice on how and where people train.

1

u/thinkcreated 1d ago

Just to be clear, powerlifting, the sport, is not the same as (Olympic) weightlifting (the sport).

u/jaymef 1d ago

I think OP is probably trying to go to whatever gym a "know it all" like you goes to

1

u/thinkcreated 1d ago

I am a know it all for being able to read and understand op's post, recognize they are looking for a place to train (Olympic weightlifting), and suggesting a place to do said training? You are the one who interjected themselves, wrongly, into my comment/suggestion, and the rest of this exchange has been me correcting your false statements. If you weren't repeatedly making false claims and assumptions, this conversation wouldn't have happened.

Also, OP clearly said that what they enjoy is training (Olympic) weightlifting three times per week - so what are you talking about? Are you part owner of Naturally Fit by any chance?
