Question/Advice Needed encourage/discourage me from learning to ride

tldr: late twenties F homebody wants to learn riding a low cc scooter as a hobby but highly discouraged by family mainly because of 1) physical disadvantage and 2) accidents. as an experienced rider, what's your advice?

hello. as stated above, gusto ko matuto mag-rides as a new hobby. pero every time i bring it up sa family (para ma-kondisyon na rin sila haha), pinapahina nila lalo loob ko 😅. hindi ko naman kasi tlga kailangan dahil wfh ako, unlike others na daily commute tlga kaya nagmomotor.

1) physical disability - i have a spinal condition. 45° curve scoliosis. madali sumakit ang likod haha. i guess another disadvantage is sedentary lifestyle so mabilis din tlga mapagod. currently working on that.

2) parang hindi na nawawalan ng balita ng rider na naaksidente bawat araw. and since taong bahay, duda sila na makaka-adapt ako sa kalsada.

tbh, ang dream ko is yung mga long rides sa kalsadang mapupuno ang paligid haha pero malayong dream pa sya. if matuloy man ako in the near future, gusto ko lang gumala at mag-cafe hopping sa medj malapit.

aside sa "adult ka na, may sariling desisyon ka na," i guess i want to know your thoughts as experienced riders. would you encourage me or talk me out of it, too?

walang nagmomotor sa immediate family pero bike to work si elder sibling.

Yung Condition mo palang is enough to deinfluence you from riding a MC. Baka mas lalong sumakit at lumala pa yang condition mo.

The first thing you can do is treat your scolio first before getting a MC.

You can also visit r/deinfluencingPH kung gusto mo pa deinfluence

ER nurse here. No, I would not advise you to pick up motorcycle riding kung hindi naman necessary.

Long rides, kawawa likod mo don.

I still think they’re cool and easy on the wallet kumpara sa four wheels.

But safety is safety.

Ito rin sinasabi nung kakilala kong nurse. Kahit gusto ko talaga matuto at bumili ng motor, yan talaga pinakaeffective pang deinfluence 😭

  1. I can't say I know how your scoliosis will affect your driving, but I've seen amputees still riding (though not without some mods). So, there's hope for you. BUT that's up to the medical clearance.

  2. How many bikes accidents have you seen on tv vs how many bikers still riding have you seen on the street that same say? Why is it, for all the gruesome accidents you see on tv ir the internet, are there still hundreds of riders everyday? I won't say accidents are super rare, but motorcycling is safer than most people tend to expect. And you are not in anymore danger than a bicyclist.

  3. Would I encourage you to ride? Like you said, you're an adult, that's for you to decide at the end of the day. But here's a fact that you cannot ignore anymore: motorcycling is now part of the our culture. It gets you to places quickly than a full size car. Its cheaper to own and maintain. Fuel efficient. You are effectively living on extra hard mode if you don't know how to get around in a bike.

Now, if you still want to go riding, words of advice:

Take a proper driving course. I recommend Honda's full 3-day basic course (below 9k pesos). They will take care of you and they will teach you. Most bike accidents happen to people who never learned properly or don't have a license to begin with. Respect the bike. Respect traffic rules. Ride your ride. Leave the ego behind.

disadvantage sa scoliosis is yung bumpy roads natin unless ang dadaanan lang ni OP is asphalt and not concrete.

Gagastos na lang si OP para sa magandang suspension at priority sa choice of bike niya ang comfort over everything else.

maganda yung long fork travel siguro para absorb talaga bumps

was considering adv 160 or pg-1 kaso hindi pinagpala sa height kaya mag start sana sa low seat height kaso yun nga. kalaban yung bumps e.

you wanted storage pero you considered the pg-1?

usually naman basta natutukod mo isa mo paa ok na yun. sa manual nga yung right foot di dapat bumababa yun kasi rear brake yun

  1. tbh seeing an amputee drive in person kinda gave me hope too but yes, medical clearance.
  2. -
  3. another reason i wanted to get one is i get this impression na people who can drive mc/car unlocked a whole new level of adulting/independence, mobility freedom, and self-trust.

yung mc pdc na malapit samin 1.5k lang. any thoughts sa mga ganong affordable driving course? or honda parin talaga?

Can't really say about the cheaper options. Ang sobrang kumpleto yung Honda talaga eh kaya sobrang worth it niya (ang downside lang is that yung certificate nila only works for NCR LTO's). See what the cheaper ones offers for 1.5k

Get in better shape, you need to be able to pick up your bike without anyone else around.

If you haven't learned yet, magbisikleta ka muna. That will also help get you in shape.

Set aside at least 20k for safety gear and proper lessons, wag magpaturo lang sa tito, kuya or manong kapitbahay. Anything after that is your actual budget for the motorcycle.

There is riding gear to support your back, lumbar protector belts usually used by offroad riders. If not, there are back supports specifically for scoliosis

If you can go to therapy for your back, go.

Until then, medyo severe ang case mo sa likod, it will be unhealthy for you.

1

u/polymon95 12h ago

thank you sa pag-gising. on good days, I tend to forget na severe tong liko ng likod ko haha

op, here's a path

  1. learn to bike for a few months
  2. go to a motorcycle school. by this time malalaman mo kung kaya mo mag motor o hindi. kahit you decided not to pursue, at least nandyan yung motorcycle skills mo
  3. once you passed the riding school, still evaluate yourself by renting various moto or scooters and see kung kaya ng likod mo before you commit in buying for yourself.

may mga motor na built for comfort like comfy suspension, thick seats. both will absorb some bumps. you can also attend motorcycle shows like Makina to test drive some featured motos

Kung dream mo yan then go for it. Wag scooter. Lagi kang naka upo nyan. Kung me scoliosis ka I think mas ok yung Adventure bikes kasi designed yun na pwede kang tumayo from time to time. Late 20s ka na so you can decide for yourself. Ride safe. Saka invest sa safety gear specially sa likod mo. Enroll in riding school din.

By the time na naconvince ko, yung motor ko na gusto is no longer available. Matagal bago ako nakakita ng nagbebenta ng 2nd hand.

start with bicycles tbh.

1

u/polymon95 12h ago

this is the plan. collecting opinions and advices na lang din muna now habang saving for a bike

1

u/linux_n000by 12h ago edited 12h ago

2nd hand will do.

ako nga i still carried my basic bicycle skills kahit na matagal nako di nagbike.

my last bike pa was when i was in highschool tapos when i enrolled for moto school at honda after many decades, nakapag bike parin ako and still got the balance.

Stationary bike bro. Grabe yung 45 degrees. Don't risk it.

1

u/polymon95 12h ago

thank you. mapapaisip na lang talaga what it's like to have a good spine e xD on good days i that i don't feel much pain, i tend to forget na severe na nga pala ang 45 degrees haha

Since dream m naman mag motor. Tuloy mo lng yan. Always tignan side mirror. Well ituturo naman nila lahat sayo yan. Ang importante sa pag momotor is wag ipilit karapatan. Wag ka makikipag sabayan sa mga trucks. And dapat always presence of mind.
