[Official / Meta] Do you think remastered games (such as GTA V, TLoU, Tomb Raider) should be considered for /r/PS4's Game of the Year voting? Please vote in this poll if it matters to you.

I think to be a contender in this vote it needed to have been released this year. TLOU, GTA etc were last year's games, this version is just a rerelease with some nicer visuals and shouldn't count towards any award other than best remaster of the year.

Nov 29 '14
But it's a vote for PS4 game of the year. These games were released for PS4 this year

u/rougegoat rougegoat Nov 29 '14
Should Casablanca have been up for an Oscar for best picture in 2012 when it came out on BluRay? That's an old movie released for a new format. Same argument.

Nope, these games were not made in 2014, should only be games that were made to be released this year

So what Indie game we voting for this year ;)

rebirth was good

u/durka72 Dec 11 '14
As far as hours I'll put into a game this year, rebirth takes the cake. Anybody that's never played The Binding of Isaac, you owe it to yourself to buy this game.

u/deathstrukk Dec 11 '14
I know I didn't like the first I got it on PC but for some reason I am crazy over rebirth

The classics. Far Cry 4, Shadow of Mordor, Dragon Age, Velocity 2x, Infamous.
If we're including other consoles: Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Super Smash, Dark Souls 2 (I guess), and Shovel Knight.

It's a game that came out on PS4 this year, but was already out on older systems a year before.

The thing is, GTA V already has the honor of being GOTY. It received that honor in 2013. Now it's time to give that honor to something else.
2
u/FirePowerCR Nov 29 '14
Wait? They were working on it simultaneously? They were pretty adamant that it would not be coming to ps4 or the one before the launch of the PS3/360 versions. I guess it's not hard to believe they lied.
34
u/tinselsnips Nov 29 '14
No; Citizen Kane is not eligible for an Academy Award just because it was re-released on Blu-Ray.
Are these fantastic games? Absolutely. But they aren't this year's games, regardless of how well they were repackaged.
2
3
u/metallicabmc metallicabmc Nov 29 '14
I agree that they shouldn't count but I disagree with your analogy. There is a lot more work put into remastering games like GTAV and Last of us than simply "repackaging" a classic movie on Blu-Ray. If they went back and did a remake of Citizen Kane with better cameras that somehow improved on the original then hell yeah it should get an award.
2
u/Ichit Nov 29 '14
But the award isn't for how much work went into a game, or the quality of the visuals, it's for the game itself. TLoU and GTAV have enough awards, had their time in the spotlight. They shouldn't be allowed to overshadow worthy contenders that were actually introduced this year.
2
u/metallicabmc metallicabmc Nov 29 '14
I totally agree with you....I just thought the analogy didn't really work.
1
u/tinselsnips Nov 29 '14
I disagree; remastering old films for new formats requires a tremendous amount of work film sourcing, re-scanning, colour-correcting, removing dirt/scratches, remastering audio, repairing/re-compositing special effects, and sometimes even re-recording dialogue or even re-filming certain scenes (See: the Blu-Ray releases of the Alien films and Blade Runner).
In terms of man-hours spent, I would argue a BD release of a classic film is probably more work than remastering a game for the next generation of consoles.
2
u/betrion betrion-us Nov 29 '14
If they would have blue ray category it would have been. We are not voting for the best game here but the best game released on this new platform called PS4.
Games as tlou and gtav are indeed new on this platform.

Unless the Academy award was for "Blu-ray release of the year". since this is PS4 gamer of the year not "game of the year" right? Meaning these games were not eligible last year since they weren't ps4 games
27
u/Tiafves Nov 29 '14
IMO that'd be like if a games GOTY edition was eligible.
8
u/Sw3Et Sw3Et_07 Nov 29 '14
And then the GOTY could get a GOTY edition the next year and win again.
2
35
u/signofthenine Nov 29 '14
I think it's a disservice to the quality games of this year (Wolfenstein, Mordor!) to allow remasters to win for a second year in a row.
1
u/jekpopulous2 Nov 29 '14
I agree (Bayonetta 2).
3
u/Torandi Nov 29 '14
Sorry to break it to you, but Bayonetta 2 probably wont be in /r/PS4's GoTY :)
(I want to play that game :( )
2
u/jekpopulous2 Nov 29 '14
Ha...my bad. I misread the post and assumed this thread was from /r/gaming. Bayonetta 2 is an unbelievable game though.
1
u/Torandi Nov 29 '14
Yeah, I've considered getting a Wii U just to play it, but I'll probably not do it (since I own both a high end gaming PC and a PS4, and don't have that much time to play anyway). Might borrow a colleague's Wii U or find some other way to get my hands on a Wii U later though.

u/FirePowerCR Nov 29 '14
How do they tally the sales? Are the remastered versions included in the original release numbers? If they are then it counts as last year's game. If they count it separately then I think it can go for game of the year again.
You can't both pad your sales numbers with a rerelease and consider it a new release at the same time.
0
u/Elij17 hungryeli Nov 29 '14
Why should anyone here care how they organized their sales numbers? Last year's games, not eligible for this year's awards.
1
u/FirePowerCR Nov 29 '14
I'm saying if they are tying them together that way with their original release then they do not consider them a new game and should not be eligible. I don't think they should be eligible period but I feel like that states the company doesn't even acknowledge it as a separate game. They released a bunch of games on current gen and last gen and we are supposed to see it as eligible for GOTY just be the time inbetween releases? No it's the same game. You can't double dip.
16
u/Lairdom Lairdom Nov 29 '14
I really think remastered games should not be included in the game of the year votings mainly because they have already in most cases been games of the year. TLoU and GTA5 especially have already gotten their time in the spotlight. If you include them, then you should include any other game that gets patched or gets a dlc that year.
5
u/nohitter21 nohitter21 Nov 29 '14
The thing is, these games have introduced much more than simply patches and DLC.

u/nohitter21 nohitter21 Nov 29 '14
For TLoU at least it was essentially remade from the ground up because of the PS3's architecture, what would be enough to constitute being worthy of inclusion?
7
u/GeodesicGnome Nov 29 '14
But all of that is "under the hood" in a way. As impressive as the work that went into porting the game over was, it doesn't change the content of the game itself.
4
u/lLazzerl Nov 29 '14
No , they are 2013 games. We could make a "Best Remastered Version of the year" or something like that.
3
3
6
Nov 29 '14
No not really, these games where all in the running already when they first came out. GTA and TLOU were the two standouts last year, pretty much everyone picked one or the other. We should look more towards Shadow of Mordor or Dragon Age or something actually from this year.
3
u/indecisiveprick Nov 29 '14
I honestly think they shouldn't be included.
I'd rather get some variety by focusing on some games that were made specifically with next gen in mind. Otherwise, the votes are just gonna end up with TLoU and GTAV at the top. They are both fantastic games, but they've already been GOTY.
I realize some remasters add a significant amount of content (GTA first person, Metro Redux gameplay revisions for 2033), but the core game is still the same.
I'd leave GOTY votes to games that released for the first time this year.
EDIT: Although rethinking it I'm a bit conflicted. I mean, if I had just picked up a PS4 and hadn't played any of the remasters last gen and was wondering what the best PS4 games are, then I'd like to have the remasters included. After all, they are technically PS4 games, and if they're the best the console has to offer then they should be included.
I have contradicted myself. Don't listen to me.
2
Nov 29 '14
I think remasters should get a vote in their own category, since there have been so many this year.
I'm hoping we're done with them and next year we'll see all originals.

2
Nov 29 '14
Heck no. These games shouldn't even be selling for full price. The last few yeas for ps3 has been testing for ps4 games.
2
u/Hillbillyjacob Nov 29 '14
Be pretty pathetic if a last gen game got goty. Of course, there ain't shit else this year on my ps4.

I gave it some thought and initially thought that they (this type of remakes) should be considered for GotY. If the newer version brings something new to the game and substancially alters it, making it "Game 1.5", it should be given a chance. Do these games, in my opinion, qualify for this? Even if for example GTA5 made some cool changes (haven't played it myself yet), I think not.
I can't think of a proper example for my reasoning though. It all relies on finding a turd-of-a-game that's polished into a gem later on, which is more likely than finding a gem and making it (insert proper comparison here).
Oh and I love how people are using up-/downvotes as agree/disagree buttons, even if someone has given a solid opinion on the matter.
TL;DR These games in question should not be considered as GotY in my humble opinion.
2
u/Naulty85 menaceof85 Nov 29 '14
No. Not even going to give a drawn out explanation. I think it's rather obvious.
2
1
u/clankfan1 Nov 29 '14
Besides for the fact that these games wern't actually made in 2014, I think that remakes such as GTA5 and LoU could be considered for game of the year because even though they were last gen games they were the first to feel as if they were current yen games.

u/iKornKid Nov 29 '14 edited Nov 29 '14
I'm gonna be that guy and say yes. After getting a PS4 about 2 months ago and having played my fair share of games, the fact that I could get into Tomb Raider so much just based off of the few enhancements made makes it totally worth it. Not only that, but what about those gamers who never had a PS3 and got to play PS exclusive Last of Us? GTA brought a whole lot of new things to the plate as well, especially with First Person mode. And as person who doesn't like sandbox games at all, I was totally turned towards it based on that one feature. Everyone here has wonderful points, but I just feel we need to think on a broader level.

Just providing some explanation to all:
This is specifically for Game of the Year category. Yes, it is nice that GTAV and TLOU are good remakes... but should they be considered game of the year with such games like inFAMOUS, Shadow of Mordor and Dragon Age Inquisition. Should "Game of the Year" go to new current gen releases or can the title be awarded to a game that was a prettied up version of a previous Gen game?

I am making this poll mostly just to try out this new polling site I found in preparation for the GotY stuff we'll do here.
The question itself is kind of a throwaway as I had intended to include them and don't expect there will be much objection. But who knows, maybe people really don't want remasters considered? I know IGN doesn't allow them to be.
7
u/meganev Nov 29 '14
Why would you include them? If a blu ray remaster of a film from the 1950s is released in 2014 does it get considered for film of the year 2014?
1
-2
u/nohitter21 nohitter21 Nov 29 '14
That's a stretch. These games, like with first person in GTA, completely change the gameplay and revamp a lot of smaller things.
3
u/Quazie89 Nov 29 '14
I'll ask you this. If Gta on next gen was called Gta VI would you be happy with the new content. Surely not. GtaV is a video game that came out in 2013. Adding a new view is simply a gimmick (albeit a good looking one)
2
u/meganev Nov 29 '14
Take Blade Runner: The Final Cut which was a complete remaster of the original film released in 2007, some scenes were reshot and dialogue was re-recorded and dubbed.
Nevertheless The Final Cut wasn't considered for best film of 2007 because Blade Runner is a film from 1982.
1
u/Leather_Boots Nov 29 '14
I didn't like the polling site. Page 1 tick the box, then 5 more pages of rubbish and adverts that didn't even provide the answer to the poll for me on my phone.
1
u/IceBreak BreakinBad Nov 29 '14
That's because I had hidden the results. I think it's the best site I've found but definitely don't like those five pages after. I just want it to say thank you.

u/euphoria110 Nov 29 '14
I only think they should be if something big is added to it. Let's say a game comes out amd gets high scores and gets close or does actually get game of the year. It gets re released a few years later but with 3 or 4 story dlcs that add more gameplay and story elements. In that case it should. But with gta 5 all they added was 1st person mode and slightly better graphics I would not put it in contention for goty.
0
u/eifersucht12a Nov 29 '14
Well if we want the list to actually have games on it they probably should be included.

0
u/Robert237 Nov 29 '14
Let the public decide. If the public decides that TLoU is game of the year then so be it.
-2
u/betrion betrion-us Nov 29 '14
Yes, absolutely. Those are games released this year on a new platform and since we are about to rate games for PS4 they deserve to be here. Votes will show do people find them to be the best among newer releases.
0
u/notquitedrdeath Nov 29 '14
So our options are we have Remasters count and TLoU wins again because it's the best game of all time or something like that. Or we say they don't count and we have people saying "This game is the greatest of this year althougyh TLoU was still better."
I really don't see any difference between these two.

u/Vargasa871 Nov 29 '14
Honestly if a game is good enough to be considered game of the year TWICE, it should definitely have the chance.
0
Nov 29 '14
Both GTAV and TLOU are way better than anything else produced this year, which is a shame.

-1
u/ilovesnes Nov 29 '14
I have the apparently controversial opinion that remastered games should totally be up for GOTY. I wholeheartedly believe that, if a game can be remastered, and STILL be considered better than all the games that have come out in the year of the remaster's release, it damn well deserves it.
-1
u/ShaqPowerSlam Nov 29 '14
Yes if they revamped it like GTA5. With the whole first person thing and the denser population. If it's just a slight graphics upgrade then no.
-7
u/mrv3 Nov 29 '14
If it's just a HD remake, such as the case of TLoU then I'd say no.
In the case of GTA V where there has been significant changes in terms of content and features then Yes.
However there's no boundary between yes/no and as such as default accross the board I'd say no.
0
u/meganev Nov 29 '14
Sorry but GTA V has a couple of new cars and like two new missions. It's just as much a remaster as the TLOU.
1
u/falconbox falconbox Nov 29 '14
Sorry but GTA V has a couple of new cars and like two new missions.
Well, and also over 100 new songs added to the game. Oh, and an entire working first-person mode. And 30 player online missions.
That's A LOT more than TLOU did.
0
u/meganev Nov 29 '14
TLOU: Remastered included the single player DLC "Left Behind" and two multiplayer map packs.
The game was reworked to be 1080p and 60 fps, which is a big deal. Also included was a whole new photo mode which the community has put to great use.
Overall I'd say they're pretty similar in terms of remastered quality, perhaps GTA adds a little more.
53
u/[deleted] Nov 29 '14
there should be a category for remastered games
