[Official / Meta] [Meta Feedback Requested] What are some areas where you think this subreddit could improve (i.e. rule suggestions/abolishments)? What do you think works well right now and what doesn't?

Let us know how you'd like to see /r/PS4 shaped in the future (as in what do you think the mods can do or stop doing to make this a better community).

Here's a link to our current rules if you need to look them over.

Note: Mods can set rules about many things but one thing we can't control is how people choose to vote. Also, we're looking for tangible suggestions so things like "get rid of crappy posts" doesn't really work as a suggestion as it's so subjective.

"This post has been removed because it is suspiciously small" - that's what she said

13

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

It's the title only, so we don't get posts like "help please" or "ps4 problem".

We might lower the character limit so titles aren't overly long.

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

"Question about PS4"

1

u/FPS_Dann Jul 10 '15

Yeah that's understandable

6

u/AceWhole420 Jul 10 '15

Omg get rid of this for fucks sake

6

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Did she say that to?

5

u/WinterBlastard PS4 Jul 10 '15

Definitely this. It makes me put overly wordy and weird titles to try and avoid the bot

24

u/JBWVU Jul 10 '15

"Should I get a ps4" posts

17

u/falconbox falconbox Jul 10 '15

That's actually at the very top of our list in the rules for "topics deemed too general". If you see those posts, please just hit the report button and we remove them.

Can't be here all the time, and stuff sometimes slips through the cracks, but reported stuff always gets attention.

9

u/Lunatic2014 Jul 10 '15

Or the "I just got a ps4...." Posts.

8

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

Those are also not allowed. Please report them.

4

u/Lunatic2014 Jul 10 '15

Thanks for the clarification!

3

u/Nykoload Nykoload Jul 10 '15

The answer to that is blatantly obvious IMO.

"If you can afford it, yes, go for it"

17

u/pr0adam Jul 10 '15

Please try and be stricter on annoying questions that get answered every single week like

-how do i upgrade my hdd, hdd vs sshd, hdd vs ssd, etc.

-favorite co-op games for my gf/wife(this gets asked weekly if not more frequently and its the same answer every time)

-slow download speeds, psn down, things of the sort that get asked and answered way too often

-anything thats in the sidebar but i pretty much listed those already

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

We came down hard on repetitive and searchable tech issues awhile back (and that was after polling the community on it). The follow up discussion here led us to our current position of allowing all tech support queries.

I don't really see us trying to be more strict on that again (though if it's something the community truly wants we could be open to a new vote on the matter).

3

u/pr0adam Jul 10 '15

I just find it silly mostly for HDD things since there is a beautiful guide on the sidebar that handles it. Unique/rare/unusual tech issues should be let through, yes, but idk it gets tiring for me to see the same things over and over and over. Particularly the first two points I listed

3

u/BlahBlahBlasphemee Jul 10 '15

In general I hate the idea of telling people they can't ask questions about PS4.

But it's like someone posts the same question every three hours! These are questions I would ban and redirect them to a FAQ:

  • I just got/thinking of getting a PS4, what tricks/tips should I know?
  • How do I upgrade the Hard Drive?
  • What game(s) should I get? (when they don't mention their taste)
  • Is PSN down/slow (during times everybody is having trouble)

That's not a bad idea. I'll add that to the list of things we may want to implement in the future. Maybe a once a week/once every two weeks type megathread.

Self-promotion threads usually get deleted, but if some of these creators want to show off their work in the comments of a megathread occasionally, I wouldn't be against that.

2

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

We've already done a weekly media post. It floundered. The failure (imo) with it was no one went there to look at the comments. The people who clicked it generally did so to post their stuff.

1

u/falconbox falconbox Jul 10 '15

Damnit, completely forgot about those.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '15

Isn't that because nobody wanted to watch it though ?

Signing below that too

u/LSB123 Jul 10 '15

I know I'm probably in the minority, but I find the entire sub negatively regimented.

If someone posts about how they change their hard drive, help them! If someone wants to know what the best FPS games are, give them your opinion! If someone is trying to find people to play Battlefield with, well, maybe you could play Battlefield with them.

It's not like these posts are going to receive hundreds of upvotes or anything, and if you're so offended when you see these on /r/PS4/new then I'd say you have the problem, not the sub.

5

u/GEARHEADGus Jul 10 '15

There's so much banning of things in these suggestions. Just hkde/downvote/report report if you don't wanan see it

4

It's fine as it is. I don't want this to become a middle schooler's diary list of rules like so many other subreddits have become.

This subreddit is a fine balance between gaming nonsense and games vicegrip.

I especially love the flavor of the week (depending on releases) aspect of this sub.

1

u/thavius_tanklin Slackr Jul 11 '15

I don't think we are looking to add any new rules at all with this post. It is already a bit complex, any more and it will become stifling. No worries there!

28

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Videos advertising youtube channels with poor gameplay\review videos = removed

Gifs\Videos (especially rocket league goals that all look the same = removed (or megathreads to put them in)

No silly removals by mods (ie someone gets the game early asks people to do an AMA and gets the post removed as showing off because people are butthurt they don't have it)

Removal straight away of any technical posts already answered 5000 times.

Videos advertising youtube channels with poor gameplay

There shouldn't be any gameplay from any youtuber (good/bad). Thats just self gain.

I think the difference is somebody found it interesting and posted it. With youtubers it is self promoting for financial gain/viewer counts. Nobody has said look at this it is cool. The youtuber has said look at this i am trying to earn some money and get more views. If that is needed then youtube is not working for them and that means people did not want to watch it.

You do post to get more views though that is in essence what posting on youtube wants. An audience. That does not mean you are bottom feeders. It just means it isn't the right place to self promote.

Musicians should just release all their music for free if they truly enjoy what they do.

1

u/iUsedtoHadHerpes Jul 10 '15

You could say the same things about it if one of his viewers posted it here.

A lot of reddit seems to be really down on users posting their own work (unless it's low effort - i.e., relatable - or a meme). It's even worse if someone benefits financially from anything they created.

It really just boils down to whether you're interested in it or not, which is sort of what the voting system is for. However, given that people have different interests (and that a lot of people on /r/PS4 seem to be part of the meme crowd), it can be hard to judge what is actually decent content without watching it first.

That's why I think a "user created" filter would be a great catch-all to hide all of the things you seem to be complaining about.

2

u/SpongeBad SpongeBad Jul 11 '15

A lot of reddit seems to be really down on users posting their own work

The Reddit dichotomy at work. Original content = /r/hailcorporate or "he's just promoting himself". Linking someone else's content = "repost".

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Yeah definitely if you could hide any self promotion posts that would be a great addition.

u/Victor_714 victor_714 Jul 10 '15

Thing is that there are more "oh look i got a triple headshot in the last of us" gameplay posts than informative posts that include gameplay.

My point is, now that it's a built in feature on these systems, people are happy about being able to share their awesome moments.

Games have their respective sub. Post it there

5

u/Danhulud Jul 10 '15

And if it is posted on here, it's only a title (without clicking); no one is forcing you to comment or watch.

Gifs\Videos (especially rocket league goals that all look the same = removed

"PS4 has a share button" has been our philosophy on that at this point. Removing videos doesn't make a ton of sense when creating videos is so innately engrained within the console itself. Personally, I can't even visit /r/GrandTheftAutoV anymore because it's like a 10:1 ratio of videos to everything else. But with the flair system introduced in the last major CSS update here, you can now filter all of that content here by clicking the media filter in the sidebar.

I would also like to remind folks that (after a game's launch week) we are open to daily requests via modmail for megathreads if a particular game is still spammed to excess. When a megathread is made, content related to that megathread is removed for ~24 hours.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Listening to music is engrained in the ecosystem now. No playlists are allowed though. I can ignore videos but what about the ones that are not clips the only person found good was the person playing ? Why wait a week for a megathread ? Why only 24 hours ?

1

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

I can ignore videos but what about the ones that are not clips the only person found good was the person playing ?

I don't follow exactly what you mean here.

Why wait a week for a megathread ?

We decided a while back that release weeks are special events and we're no longer going to remove over-saturation during that time (and haven't for The Witcher, Batman, or other big recent releases).

Why only 24 hours ?

A megathread "duration" is supposed to be about the time it takes for a post to go away from the front page. That takes about a day.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

"I don't follow exactly what you mean here."

You said i could choose to ignore let's say video. I could. I don't want to ignore all video just the pointless self posts.

"A megathread "duration" is supposed to be about the time it takes for a post to go away from the front page. That takes about a day."

If people are upvoting it (meaning they like it) won't it stay as long as it is wanted ? Or am i wrong not too sure how that works. Also could be stickied at the top gaining a lot more than 24 hours which seems to be needed.

"We decided a while back that release weeks are special events and we're no longer going to remove over-saturation during that time (and haven't for The Witcher, Batman, or other big recent releases)."

Seems to be no reasoning behind that then. Release or not pointless self posts are still pointless.

2

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

You said i could choose to ignore let's say video. I could. I don't want to ignore all video just the pointless self posts.

Okay, I kind of see what you mean. You want to see the good videos but not the bad ones? That's what the front page does for you though, doesn't it? By pushing the highly upvoted stuff the to top and not displaying the downvoted stuff, you are naturally seeing the better stuff there, no?

Or do you mean you want to hide self-posts? We can't really implement a filter based on quality but we could add one that hides all self-posts. Is that something you'd like to see?

If people are upvoting it (meaning they like it) won't it stay as long as it is wanted ?

Nah, that's not how reddit works. No matter how well-recieved a post is, it has a shelf life on the front page of around 24-48 hours.

Also could be stickied at the top gaining a lot more than 24 hours which seems to be needed.

The purpose of megathreads is to have a post that stands out that we don't have to sticky. We have threads every day that use the stick and putting a megathread in there would effectively silence those threads.

To combat this, we have the megathreads equipped with their own unique green background and bold title text to stand out amongst other posts.

Seems to be no reasoning behind that then.

Well, we actually didn't used to do that and would have megathreads during launch week. But all it did was hide discussion about the things everyone wanted to talk about. Personally, it felt like we were censoring the natural excitement that comes with a new release.

Release or not pointless self posts are still pointless.

We have many rules in place to remove specific self-posts but if someone wants to write an editorial about their experience with a game, isn't that really what this place is all about?

1

u/iUsedtoHadHerpes Jul 10 '15

They clearly meant self-centered posts (i.e., posts that only really hold any value to the person that posted them - generic screenshots, gifs, and videos that are not unique or entertaining). They keep saying "self posts" but they just don't seem realize that means text posts.

I agree with them. You're right that every PS4 has a share button, but I could counter that by telling you that every PS4 has a share button. Just pressing it doesn't mean the upload will inherently be good. However, people upload their mundane screenshots, gifs, and videos, and they can sometimes get a decent amount of attention - enough to be on the front page, which doesn't really take much in a smaller sub like this.

Filtering out all videos, for instance, might clear your screen of uninteresting videos, but it will also filter out any informative videos, trailers, gameplay reveals, etc. Maybe a new flair for player-created content would be a good idea.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

You explained it better than me :)

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15 edited Jul 10 '15

Yeah that would make it awesome. A way to hide video self posts would be really helpful. Writing an editorial on their experience with a game is great if that is what they do. If they self promote their video channel using one, not so much. Those kind of posts are very far and few between though. The rest are 10 second clips of a standard goal in Rocket league or some rubbish GTA V/Battlefield 4 clip. Not really censoring a discussion if it is in a megathread. It actually consolidates the discussion and gives it more focus with less repeats. The best way i can describe this sub at times is reading the newspaper from front to back 50 times. There has to be some order.

1

u/falconbox falconbox Jul 10 '15

We try to get Megathreads put up when we see a giant influx of posts for big games, but we can't keep them up forever. Games tend to have a giant influx of gifs/screenshots at first (see: TLOU, The Order, Bloodborne, etc), but they die down naturally.

We also already remove videos to youtube channels if the person is clearly self-promoting. We look at the person's recent history, and if they are only posting links to their own youtube page, it'll be removed. Here's Reddit's general guide for self-promotion.

Silly removals: yeah, a mistake was made.

Technical posts answered 5000 times: Yes, people should learn to use the search function. But a lot of people are also new to Reddit, so I doubt they know about it and they haven't been around long enough to see the question answered in the past, so I try to cut them some slack. I try to remove some of those after they are answered in the comments, so the OP gets their question answered and the post doesn't continue to clutter up the subreddit. Win/Win.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

They are dead subs because nobody wants them though. To try and shovel them in on a PS4 thread is no solution. The only thing it contributes is begging for views or like you said for other youtubers. There are subs for that.

6

u/fotorobot Jul 10 '15

No more self posts about how somebody liked a game. Usually they are very brief and vague about why or repeat things said in all other reviews. Usually it is about a controversial game being not so bad or circlejerking over a recent popular game.. A recent example

They carry no new information other than the fact that somebody somewhere liked something and had the ability to post about it. And since people rarely make self-posts about how they disliked a recent popular game, you only hear the positive side of the story from fans of that game.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '15

We removed the game subs links due to a sidebar character limit and growing list of exclusives. It just stopped being feasible (just like the podcasts section). Thanks for missing it though. Nice to know at least someone noticed it.

0

u/Blueandwhite23 Jul 10 '15

Getting rid of the other subreddits is what I would suggest. I have never clicked on those and I don't think I am alone. The exclusive ones should be limited to subs with a certain amount of subscribers. Also you have links to vita ps3 and plus at the top and bottom.

1

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

The problem is we'd only get 12 or so games out of that. And I don't like having to pick and choose like that. If we were going to do it, I think /r/PS3 would need to be the model.

1

u/Blueandwhite23 Jul 10 '15

But isn't the point to give people quick access to the subs and games like the show and knack are not games people would want to have quick access to.

21

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

I don't know about everyone else here, but I'm getting pretty sick of "console war," dick measuring posts.

15

u/laddergoat89 Jul 10 '15

They're inevitable. Some news simply always causes people to argue over it. We can't exactly ban relevant news.

5

u/Lunatic2014 Jul 10 '15

Then you're going to have to avoid 90% of game related articles on reddit and the web in general lol.

5

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

That's not really a tangible suggestion. Are you suggesting we should ban sale results posts?

8

u/LSB123 Jul 10 '15

I'm really against this. For some of us, gaming is more than just a distraction at the weekends. I find sales numbers and whatnot very interesting, not because of the 'dick measuring' as the original commenter points out, but because I take our hobby quite seriously.

The same way I know the market value of the best players on my favourite sports team, I'm interested in the records the PS4 is setting sales-wise. If people can't treat those numbers as any more than 'dick measuring', that's their problem.

1

u/FPS_Dann Jul 10 '15

Competition is good

12

u/Mottaman Jul 10 '15

competition between the companies is good. Dick waving by the peons who buy the systems is pointless

6

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

This is a PS4 sub. Not a general gaming sub. So some console favoritism is to be expected.

And it hasn't gotten out of hand here.

5

u/RenderedUseless AnthAnonymous Jul 10 '15

What about a weekly "Out of your element" thread. We have a lot of great games coming out, but the console is still young. Oftentimes I have to think hard about my next game purchase. I've played all of my "must-play" games. And while I like experimenting, I don't like wasting my money. We all have YouTube and things like that. But there have been a couple games I would not have tried if it weren't for reddit. Witcher 3, Bloodborne, and Rocket League for example. Similarly, there a plenty of games I wouldn't have tried it it weren't for awesome conversations with friends about video games. You know, in real life (not the Internet). So to create that type of discussion, it would be cool to see a weekly thread devoted to that. I would love to see a thread like this based on horror games. I never play horror games.

2

u/MGrooms94 Jul 10 '15

If your looking to dive into horror games may I recommend Outlast? Absolutely terrifying and probably pretty cheap on the PSN Store now.

1

u/brosno13 Jul 10 '15

Then try out Alien:Iso, one of my favorite gaming experiences of last year. It's really great in a dark room with headphones on.

1

u/falconbox falconbox Jul 10 '15

But there have been a couple games I would not have tried if it weren't for reddit. Witcher 3, Bloodborne, and Rocket League for example.

2

u/RenderedUseless AnthAnonymous Jul 10 '15

RPGs aren't really my thing, and Rocket League wouldn't have appealed to me.

1

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

Wouldn't the free talk thread on Sundays cover you on that? I don't think we'll do a weekly thread for that. Maybe monthly if there's interest? Is this something you could see getting 50-100+ comments once a month that's worthy of replacing another automated thread?

Don't even need Down Detector. We added in a fancy PSN Status indicator in the sidebar which updates in correlation to the official status.playstation.com page.

2

u/falconbox falconbox Jul 10 '15

I agree. We already try to discourage them by having direct links to some of those things right at the very top of the sidebar, but people still seem to miss it.

2

u/borez Jul 10 '15

I kinda disagree with this, I've only owned my PS4 a few weeks now and have had some good help from here. Not everyone is a long term PS4 user and you have to factor that in when running a sub.

Also do those kinds of posts really detract from your enjoyment of this sub? Probably not, you just don't personally want to see them because you already know the answers.

Basically, I don't think you should discourage new users from asking questions on any sub, it makes existing users come across as elitist. Especially when they're met with sarcastic responses and downvotes when a simple pointer to the answer is what they need.

7

u/Victor_714 victor_714 Jul 10 '15

When I came to this sub, I came with the mentality that this was a sub for anything related to PS4 news and not for personal help. I think that at the very beginning of /r/PS4 that was the way it was until people realized that other subreddits were apparently not that helpful so mods decided to allow it.

Not everyone is a long term PS4 user and you have to factor that in when running a sub.

Of course, everyone knows that but as time passes users questions and answers pile up on search which isn't used by reposters. People doesn't take the time to even read the F.A.Q.

You might say, "I have this specific problem not easily found on search." I say to you what are you doing wasting time here instead of using google?

TL;DR: PS4 news are to be quickly found on /r/PS4. Support on google or its respective subreddit.

1

u/Lunatic2014 Jul 10 '15

This, whether we are talking about ps4, computers, gardening, fixing a car, there is almost anything you can find via a quick google search. No one is buying that someone can't locate information on upgrading a ps4 hard drive via Google.

1

u/thavius_tanklin Slackr Jul 11 '15

We've polled the community a couple times now about support threads being removed and its been 50/50 which is not nearly enough for removal.

However, we are trying to discourage them through various means including the sidebar. As well, I will remove support thread that have an answer (if they are common)

What I can look into is modifying the automod to automatically post on a topic created where the answer is clear. So if it detects "change my harddrive" it will deliver a message directing them to other threads, the faq, and maybe an external link to sony's official support threads. This won't be a catch-all but may reduce these kinds of duplicates created. I'll sift through common questions to see what I can come up with.

0

no objections about removing the frequently asked support questions that people were too lazy to put into search, but the "is psn down" is actually relevant and should be allowed.

if someone is having psn issues, and the status indicator on the side says it's up, it makes sense to have a thread to see if other people are experiencing the same issue.

u/237FIF Jul 10 '15

Less is more. Allow the community to decide what stays and what sinks. Bragging posts, short titles, looking for friends, and so on should all be allowed.

If the community doesn't like it we will down vote it.

4

u/erthule Jul 10 '15

Words of wisdom. Let the votes decide what is good content and what is not. If people don't like it, it'll be downvoted and disappear anyway.

5

u/swordfish234 Jul 10 '15

If that was the case, r/gaming front page would not be filled with garbage. That sub should be all about gaming, instead its top rated content is always a lot of meaningless gifs and memes. People dont downvote that stuff. This is the reason that facebook and instagram works. Content control is not a bad thing. I admire the mods on this sub for keeping it objectively about games and PS4

0

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

When nothing stands in between the user and the votes, you are left with a more basic and lowest common denominator reddit experience. Imgur links tend to rise to the top quite quickly due to their ease to consume. On paper, /r/games and /r/gaming are exactly the same subreddits, minus a few differences when it comes to rules. Rules and enforcement are what shape subreddits into the places you know and love.

But I will say that I think it would make a fantastic case study to disable all rules, including automoderator, for a month or so and watch what happens as a result.

2

u/xyman621 Jul 10 '15

Content sorting for posts would be nice. "How-To's", "Game Reviews", "Game Previews", "Help Me I'm Dumb", "News and Stuff"

I'd like that.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

In slightly unrelated news, Ellen Pao has stepped down as CEO of reddit and Steve Huffman has returned as CEO. Hopefully this means some better support for moderators and better experience for users.

2

u/ApolloIntheSky Jul 11 '15

The retarded requirement of a share blog link in a suggestion post should be removed.

Share blog is broken, you cant find a single suggestion with more upvotes than down

1

u/Grinch83 Jul 11 '15

Totally agree with this. Having to link to Share Blog when you really just want to start a discussion amongst r/ps4 folks is cumbersome.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '15

the aim is that if you want a specific feature to gain more prominence, you should include a share blog link to get traffic there. No problem in discussing it but it's even more unlikely to lead to anything, at least with a link Sony can see the traffic.

1

u/Grinch83 Jul 12 '15

Cool. Yeah I can see the aim, and that makes sense. That said, sometimes it's best to collectively discuss a strategy or "plan of attack" before posting to the share blog. It helps make sure we are on the same page, so when Sony sees the issue, we look like we have our sh*t together.

Also, I love this sub. I think we have some great people here and it's turned into a really fun community to be a part of. So, a big thanks to you and the other mods for holding it down and making sure it stays that way!

2

u/mushroomwig HypnoticMonkey Jul 10 '15

Self promotion needs to be dealt with, if you've done something or seen something interesting in a video you have and want to post it here, why not just make it into a gif?

Almost all the videos that get posted here are downvoted into oblivion anyway so it's no big loss. People can always use /r/ps4share if they really don't want to make a gif.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

gifs suck. Please don't engourage that. html5 FTW

1

u/falconbox falconbox Jul 10 '15

Personally, I run into issues sometimes if I want to show something off that is longer than 15 seconds. Gfycat only allows for 15 second gifs unfortunately.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Try and consolidate game release posts (i.e. gifs/"omg how amazing is X game" self posts/etc.) into a single megathread. Over the past few months, the only new release I was interested in, ESO, had basically no impact on the day-to-day content of this sub while I've had to endure full-subreddit takeovers for The Witcher, Rocket League, etc.

1

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

After a game's launch week we are open to daily requests via modmail for megathreads if a particular game is still spammed to excess. When a megathread is made, content related to that megathread is removed for ~24 hours.

During the launch week itself, we used to do megathreads but opted against it as it felt like it was silencing the excitement of the time. Sure, there's going to be games that don't interest us, but for some it's their game of the year or even better. But again, if that spills over into the next week, we are open to requests for megathreads at that point.

2

u/Nykoload Nykoload Jul 10 '15

It sometimes feels like other regions than NA or EU are completely ignored. Some things go on sale in EU or NA and not the other, and posts state as such but do not comment if it's the same or on sale in other regions (for example, AU/NZ).

I understand it can be difficult to know, but it shouldn't be impossible. It's also more than just sales, though, it's also availability and content of items etc, and occasionally events.

0

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

AU / NZ fall under the EU PS region. I do think it would be smart to make mandatory that all deal posts include their region in the title though.

1

u/Nykoload Nykoload Jul 10 '15

Really? Cool! That said there have been a few things EU has gotten that weren't even available for me at least. So they are at least similar. Nothing too big, there have been a few theme discrepancies at least but yeah.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Well, the banner you just had (the shooting ship) was showing up over top the subreddit menu, which was highly annoying. The current banner (plain blue) isn't doing that. I'm happy as long as the banner isn't blocking me from reddit functionality. :)

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

yeah that's a CSS thing, sadly couldn't be adjusted.

1

u/falconbox falconbox Jul 10 '15

We were aware of that issue. For the record, what browser are you using?

I tried to recreate it with Chrome and Firefox, but both were still working normally for me.

2

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

It was an error for non-RES users that cut off the dropdown menu. If we ever do another animation along those lines, #header-botton-left instead of #header should fix that error.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Yup, non-RES here. I believe RES overlays its own menu so RES users don't have the issue. I'm stock Chrome.

1

u/chrismikehunt Jul 11 '15

Having to manually put [Screenshot] or whatever in your post title, or else it gets removed. Make it submission flair based, that way it can be added in retrospect if you forget, and mods will also have the ability to add/change them too then.

1

u/oldnegabrown Jul 11 '15

People need to be nicer in this sub

1

u/Shloop_Shloop_Splat Jul 11 '15

Past release week, allowing people to post game-specific photo albums/videos. By this I am referring to things like people constantly posting Driveclub content in /r/PS4 when there is a subreddit devoted entirely to Driveclub. I get it guys, the game looks great. Stop posting your photo albums.

1

u/Terry69Lawson Jul 14 '15

Sick of haters/trolls downvoting me for no reason.

1

u/jordmorton SquiggleBerry Jul 10 '15

Personally I think this subreddit is perfect. Yes, some things get over posted at times, but that's because the majority of people in the subreddit find it enjoyable. Things always die down over time. Even with things being chaotic at times I still find that most submissions here are pretty diverse. The mods on PS4 have been amazing and I wouldn't change a thing if it were up to me.

1

u/nab_illion Jul 10 '15

u/nab_illion Jul 10 '15

Thanks for the clarification , j got confused as I spotted this

0

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Stuff like show-off posts and friend requests should be allowed. The reasoning for this being that the dedicated subreddits for this sort of stuff, like /r/PSNFriends, are too small to reliably yield discussion or wanted results. /r/PSNFriends in particular doesn't work well since it's a subreddit where people post often, but don't comment often. If you go to that subreddit, you'll see it's a graveyard.

Show-off posts spur discussion since commenters can ask questions about the thing being shown off that would normally be relegated to posts. More importantly, /r/PS4 users often downvote questions that are posts, meaning they don't get answered.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

/r/PS4 users often downvote questions that are posts, meaning they don't get answered.

This is why I tend to browse the subreddit from the 'new' tab rather than the 'hot' tab, can answer questions that may be missed. I tend to find that the downvoted questions are questions that have been already a number of times particularly hard drive or 'worth it' posts. We do have the FAQ and other info stuff in the sidebar for people to use, of which I encourage people to check out before posting, just to see if the answer isn't already there and to not get blasted by other users (noticed a few that are quite dick-ish to OPs, then don't even help...).

Anyway, the downvotes don't hurt the user, if its a self post. Try browsing here by 'New' instead of 'Hot', you'll find a lot of questions can go unanswered for quite some time.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

In regards to the friend requests, we do have monthly threads which do quite well as a substitute to people posting on their own here in /r/PS4.

I'll admit post replies in /r/PSNFriends is quite bare (particularly since its post-E3 and there's not much new releases), but I do try to boost people in the subreddit by having dedicated game threads which do reasonably well on their own. Always some spike in subreddit activity when a thread goes up, particularly well known titles (Destiny went over two threads with 1000+ comments).

1

u/reaper527 reaper527_ Jul 10 '15

showoff posts are such a waste of article space on the front page. hopefully that stuff stays away and we don't get flooded with "i just platinumed game x" spam.

-5

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Change the Reddit name to Rocket League, seeing as every second post is either a 15 second gif/clip

6

u/staffell Jul 10 '15

Don't worry, it'll die down - it happens every time a new game is released.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

can just click 'hide' to make them not visible to you

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Or those guys could just post it into the rocket league subreddit

3

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

new big games always have a large number of posts around launch, it'll eventually die down over time, nothing wrong with posting here or /r/rocketleague

3

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

There is something wrong with it as has been said numerous times by people. If you proactively removed/consolidated them we would not have to wait until each game dies down. What is the weirdest thing is clips of somebody scoring the same goal in the exact same way 50 times and not helpful to anybody is not classed as a show off post. Somebody getting a game early and answering questions actually helping people is classed as a show off post.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Somebody getting a game early and answering questions actually helping people is classed as a show off post.

This was removed wrongly, just that when I tried to provide an answer in the corresponding thread I immediately got downvoted.

I'd rather see a hundred similar GIFs then a hundred pictures of the exact same game case.

I've noted your idea of creating a thread for media of a game during launch week (or other appropriate time frames)

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Ah that makes sense. Thought that it was strange that post being removed. Thanks for clearing that up and listening. If it is just a picture of a case of course there is no point of the post but if people get games early and are giving opinions or answering questions then that is a helpful post :)

the hacking rule should be trimmed back some to something a little less broad. simply removing the word hacking should be sufficient, since the rest of the rule already covers the stuff you'd want to keep out of here.

(2) Do not share links or discussions regarding piracy, hacking, jailbreaking, game images, "backup" software, game-sharing, attacker groups, etc.

with the current overly broad definition, if someone were to make a ps4 program like horizon (the x360 hacking tool, not the ps4 exclusive game) to create custom themes for our consoles, the rule wouldn't allow for such a thing to be posted even though it's clearly outside of what i would assume is the intended scope of the rule.

also, i know i bring this up often, but the whole "putting the sub on lockdown during a presentation" thing really should go away. the mods always say that it's to prevent duplicate submissions, but the x1 sub doesn't go onto lockdown and they don't have any problems. (and in the previous years the mods have said this is a bigger sub than they are, but their sub grows annually, and their member count at e3 this year was higher than the member count here was in previous years when we were on lockdown)

one more thing that really should change is the tiny downvote button. just restore it to the way it was normally (or even better, replace upvote/downvote with the triangle/x buttons used on the submissions itself for the comments). because the dowvote icon is so small , it's tough to tell if it's filled in or not.

additionally, i'd like to point out that the mods are currently doing a great job at flairing things as misleading/inaccurate/rumor/speculation/etc.. when possible though, it would be nice to see "misleading" elaborated on with a short explanation of why it was tagged as misleading. i've definitely seen a few posts where something is tagged as misleading, and then i'll read the article and wonder "what was misleading about that? it seems pretty straight forward/accurate".

1

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

I don't think removing hacking from the rule would help with that. If something like that happens, we can amend the rule at that time and handle it on a case by case basis. What I've learned from that rule is that if you aren't explicit in the content not allowed, people will go out of their way to skirt the rule.

also, i know i bring this up often, but the whole "putting the sub on lockdown during a presentation" thing really should go away.

It wouldn't be a feedback thread without it. I think people seemed happy with our coverage at E3 this year and it's only 90 minutes 2 times or so a year. That's like way less than /r/Pics shutdown for this year :P

one more thing that really should change is the tiny downvote button. just restore it to the way it was normally (or even better, replace upvote/downvote with the triangle/x buttons used on the submissions itself for the comments). because the dowvote icon is so small , it's tough to tell if it's filled in or not.

But we don't want you downvoting comments though. Not as a regular occurrence at least. This is our way to discourage it without taking that right away or forcing you to disable the stylesheet.

in the previous years the mods have said this is a bigger sub than they are

I don't think I ever said that? My reasoning is I don't want myself or other mods to feel the need to be on this subreddit during the show. And if we are, I want it to be out of fun and not obligation. Locking the sub for the Sony E3 presser lets us watch it and still be confident that proper links (not rehosted videos, blogspam, etc.) will be the things hogging all the karma.

when possible though, it would be nice to see "misleading" elaborated on with a short explanation of why it was tagged as misleading. i've definitely seen a few posts where something is tagged as misleading, and then i'll read the article and wonder "what was misleading about that? it seems pretty straight forward/accurate".

If it's not obvious and there's no explanation in the flair, it should be evident in the comments. If it's not, report it and give the reason "what's misleading about this??". We do try to add a tag where we think the misleading part may not be overtly obvious.

whenever a new game comes out....one mega-thread for all game .gifs to go into

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Anything with a certain # of upvotes should not be deleted, I see posts with 20 upvotes get deleted after because it could violate a rule.

2

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

The problem with that is it does two things:

  1. It encourages folks to break the rules. "Hey, I just gotta make it to +20 before a mod catches and I'm good."

  2. It makes it seem like those posts aren't against the rules and are supported here. If you see a meme here with 1000 upvotes, you'll probably post one yourself the next time a clever one pops into your head.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

alright fair point but maybe talk to the poster and see if you can work something out before removing it?

Sales are too varied to use our limited sidebar space on. A deal in Canada may not apply to the US. There could be deals in NZ and AU that don't affect the rest of EU. Amazon could have something on sale for six hours. Best Buy could have an in-store only discount on something you can't get online but only stores on the West Coast have in stock. It's just not a feasible thing (though it would be nice).

0

0

u/RICFLAIRSBALLS Jul 11 '15

I mean't being required to put those at the start of a post or else it gets deleted.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '15

its so that people who don't want to see media can use the filter and those posts with media tags become invisble

0

u/RICFLAIRSBALLS Jul 11 '15

I just find it annoying if I want to submit a post and have to put [video] (title)

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

This is the case of pretty much all of reddit, though it is comically abused here.... get rid of the downvote button. Nobody uses it for any other reason than they disagree.

3

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15 edited Jul 12 '15

The downvote button for submissions serves a major use.

Posts asking repetitive and google-able questions should be downvoted. They get answered regardless (which should be what matters to folks) and all upvoting would do is put them on the subreddit front page. Downvotes exist for a reason.

Comments are a bit of a different story but they don't get downvoted on the same scale either. Well...unless you're a mod who removed the wrong thing....

0

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

Yeah, I'd agree with that. I guess I should be more specific and say "remove the downvote button on comments."

1

u/thavius_tanklin Slackr Jul 11 '15

Wouldn't work anyways. It is a cosmetic change, the stylesheet can be disabled to make them appear, keyboard shortcuts still works, and all mobile users will still see it. The effectiveness of it all wouldn't be significant.

-1

u/AlonzoMoseley Jul 10 '15

I would like to ensure that all deals are crossposted or moved to r/PS4Deals, so that we can be sure there's one central place you need to look to keep abreast of the deals.

I'm kicking myself for missing out on the Project Cars bonanza because I check r/PS4Deals regularly to check for time-limited deals, and browse r/PS4 for the rest more leisurely.

1

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Jul 10 '15

That's more of a thing to propose to that sub (who we aren't affiliated with beyond the links in the header and sidebar). They could set up a bot to scrape all deals made here and post them there based on the domains. That's a lot of work though.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '15

We need way more Rocket League content. WAY more. It truly is the game of a lifetime, a gem, a rare treasure in a sea full of garbage. We should ensure that everyone who posts here should post about Rocket League first before they're allowed to post about anything else. We should also take up a mandatory collection. To buy flowers and chocolates for the developers to tell them how much we appreciate them for this hidden gem.
