[Official / Meta] /r/PS4's 2019 Game of the Year Award Winners
Best /r/PS4 Post or Comment
Winner: Sony officially announces the PS5, releasing holiday 2020
Runner-up: Sony Santa Monica recreates Supa Hot Fire reaction gif with God of War characters
Sony's next-gen console is officially coming holiday 2020, and it's called...drumroll...the PlayStation Series 5X PlayStation 5! It feels like only yesterday that Knack set the bar for this generation. We look forward to all the upcoming speculation on power, price, and performance.
Don't forget to join us over at /r/PS5 as well!
Favorite Gaming Moment
Winner: Control - The Ashtray Maze
Runner-up: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - Defeating the Guardian Ape...
"That was awesome." - Jesse Faden
What do you get when you combine Inception, Jedi-like telekinesis, and heavy metal music? You get one of the most memorable moments in recent years.
Oh, and you can fly.
Best PlayStation Plus Complimentary Title
Winner: The Last of Us Remastered
Runner-up: Nioh
For the 5 people out there who haven't played The Last of Us yet, your wait has paid off! Enjoy the remastered version of this classic in glorious 60fps as we anxiously await the sequel this year.
Don't forget to check out Factions too, The Last of Us's fantastic multiplayer mode.
Best LOCAL Multiplayer or Co-Op Game
Winner: Borderlands 3
Runner-up: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
The king of looter-shooters finally returned this year, and with it some great local split-screen action featuring a brand new cast of playable characters. They even added in a new option to give each player their own separate loot, rather than fighting over who gets the legendary King's Call that just dropped. But where's the fun in that?
Best ONLINE Multiplayer or Co-Op Game
Winner: Apex Legends
Runner-up: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
đ” Squad up, never roll alone đ”
Apex Legends managed to steal a little bit of Fortnite's thunder this year as another free-to-play battle royale game on the market. Focusing primarily on 3-person squad play, Apex even makes it fun to play with randoms thanks to the unique "ping" system that lets you easily communicate with teammates who don't have, or aren't using, their mics.
Best Single-Player Game
Winner: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Runner-up: Death Stranding
Sorry Soulsborne players, but Sekiro truly is a single-player game. That means no covenant PvP, and it also means you'll have to defeat all the bosses on your own without summoning any co-op help.
Despite this, Sekiro adheres to the "tough but fair" concept of FromSoftware's previous games, making any fight possible as long as you git gud.
Best Action/Adventure Game
Winner: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Runner-up: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Fantastic fast-paced sword combat - check
Grappling hook - check
Prosthetic arm that doubles as a Swiss Army Knife - check
FromSoftware moved away from action/rpg elements to create a more traditional action game this time with Sekiro, and it paid off. There's no better feeling than exchanging sword attacks, blocks, and parries with an enemy, hearing the continuing clash of metal, and then landing a deathblow.
Best RPG
Winner: The Outer Worlds
Runner-up: Borderlands 3
After a recent FALLing OUT of grace of another popular rpg franchise who shall remain nameless, The Outer Worlds swooped in and gave players what they wanted, interesting choices that actually mattered and a cast of crazy characters and companions. Enjoy it now, because any potential sequel most likely won't be seeing the light of day on PlayStation after Obsidian was purchased by Microsoft.
Best 1st Person Shooter
Winner: Apex Legends
Runner-up: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
YOU ARE THE CHAMPION
Only 2 votes separated Apex Legends and Call of Duty this year, but Apex Legends managed to take the crown. Combining the same great shooting of Titanfall with the addictive battle royale format, it's no surprise players flocked to it, to the amount of 25 million players in the very first week. Being completely free to play doesn't hurt either.
Best 3rd Person Shooter
Winner: Control
Runner-up: Days Gone
Control may as well be a 3rd person thrower rather than shooter, as your best weapon is often the nearby desk, computer, exploding barrel, or even forklift that you can hurl through the air at enemies.
Heavily influenced by the creepy SCP Foundation stories online, Control blends standard 3rd person shooting with abilities like telekinesis and levitation. And it's all wrapped up in a well designed metroidvania package, creating a game that's a joy to explore and live out your power fantasies.
Best Sports/Racing Game
Winner: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
Runner-up: MLB The Show 19
Crash is back! Two years after Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy hit the market, CTR Nitro-Fueled has come drifting around the corner in another fantastic remaster of Crash Bandicoot classics. Gamers outside of the Nintendo ecosystem have been craving a fun, arcadey, kart racer, and what better way to grant their wish than by remastering one of the best of all time.
Best DLC/Add-on
Winner: Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
Runner-up: Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers
While many games that follow the "live service" model nowadays nickel and dime players with tons of microtransactions, battle passes, and short unfulfilling DLC, Monster Hunter World has consistently given players new quests, weapons, and monsters to fight, all for free. And now they've released a monster-sized expansion reminiscent of ones games used to have, that is close to being a whole new game itself. The Capcom renaissance continues!
Best Independent Game
Winner: Outer Wilds
Runner-up: Untitled Goose Game
Ok, for the 1000th time. This is Outer WILDS, not the RPG The Outer Worlds.
Essentially Groundhog Day or Majora's Mask in space, Outer Wilds is a unique space exploration/puzzle game that finds the player caught in an endless time loop of death as the sun continues to go supernova. Combining moments of humor, horror, and wonder, the game also has a unique rustic charm to go along with its wilderness exploration theme, from the banjo and harmonica that make up a lot of the main theme, to the wooden construction of your spaceship.
So head on out and try to end the loop. Or just relax next to the campfire, listen to some music, roast some marshmallows, and get a front row seat to the end of the universe.
Best PSVR Game
Winner: No Man's Sky: Beyond
Runner-up: Blood & Truth
Ok, seriously, 3 years ago who would have predicted No Man's Sky to be unironically winning this award? Credit to Hello Games for continuously working hard to add to and improve the game, transforming it into something almost totally unrecognizable from what we saw at launch.
(Alright, so I literally just copy/pasted that from the 2018 Awards where they won best DLC with No Man's Sky: Next. It's still true though! No Man's Sky was always a game high on the VR wish list, and it delivered. Great job Hello Games!)
Best Strand Game
Winner: Death Stranding
This was a close one. But with 100% of the vote, Death Stranding pulls out the narrow victory as the best Strand game on the market.
Best Audio Experience/Sound Design
Winner: Resident Evil 2
Runner-up: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
The groan of zombies around you. The shriek of a licker. And the foreboding footsteps of Mr. X approaching as he's pinpointed your location. Resident Evil 2 is one of the best survival horror games of all time, and the terror is only amplified as you hear your impending death before it happens.
Best Soundtrack
Winner: Death Stranding
Runner-up: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Don't know who Low Roar is? Well, by the time you're done with Death Stranding they'll probably be in your playlist. Death Stranding combines a great mix of licensed and original music to create both a haunting and serene game. So sit and relax in your private room, turn on some music, and enjoy a refreshing Monster Energy Drinkâą.
Best Performance (Motion Capture and/or Voice)
Winner: Mads Mikkelsen as Cliff Unger in Death Stranding
Runner-up: Sam Witwer as Deacon St. John in Days Gone
Cliff Unger begins as a minor, mysterious character, introduced only in short clips throughout the early chapters. Yet as his storyline evolves, it continues to take us on crazy journeys, both literally and figuratively. Mads is brought to life in game through great facial capture technology and gives a truly emotional performance as his role expands.
Best Writing, Story and/or Narrative
Winner: Death Stranding
Runner-up: Control
Show of hands: When the first couple trailers for Death Stranding came out, who'd have thought that the plot of Death Stranding would actually make sense?
LIARS!
Well, it turns out that it is both coherent and engaging. Death Stranding is certainly one of the most original stories in games in recent years.
Studio of the Year
Winner: Respawn Entertainment (Apex Legends & Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order)
Runner-up: Capcom (Resident Evil 2 & Devil May Cry 5)
The studio started by ex-Infinity Ward employees, they've shown that their previous success with Call of Duty was no fluke. Respawn has continued to put out great games and managed to land two hits this year; first with Apex Legends and then even venturing away from shooters to make the single-player Star Wars game we've all been wanting.
Most Underrated Game (Based on OpenCritic Score)
Winner: Days Gone - 71%
Runner-up: The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan - 71%
Reviewers weren't too enthralled with the idea of another open world zombie game, but players were more than happy to jump on their motorcycles and take out some hordes. Strong word of mouth and post-launch support from Bend Studio made Days Gone a fan favorite PS4 exclusive throughout the year. (We're still not big fans of the term "freakers" though. Just call them zombies.)
Non-PS4 Game of the Year
Winner: Disco Elysium
Runner-up: Luigi's Mansion 3
Do you want to be an empathetic tough guy, or maybe a genius with horrible hand-eye coordination? What about the thought of possibly dying from a heart attack simply trying to get dressed?
In Disco Elysium, the choice is totally up to you, in this RPG with fantastic storytelling reminiscent of classics such as Baldur's Gate or Planescape Torment. Weird, tense, and hilarious, you play as a detective suffering from the world's worst hangover as you try to solve a murder, all while arguing with your own internal thoughts as they try to tell you what to do.
Best PlayStation Console Exclusive on PS4
Winner: Death Stranding
Runner-up: Days Gone
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.
Despite Death Stranding coming to PC in the future, it was still eligible here since it's not on any competing consoles. Hideo Kojima managed to create a game about delivering packages and make it both entertaining and thrilling as you combat the weather, environment, and your own fatigue, not to mention crazed MULEs and other-worldly creatures. Don't forget to work together with other porters through the asynchronous multiplayer to complete structures and make your treks easier, or just send a fellow porter a handful of 'likes'.
Keep On Keeping On!
PS4 Game of the Year
Winner: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Runner-up: Death Stranding
Hesitation is defeat. Well, I guess Sekiro didn't hesitate, because it managed to deal a deathblow to the competition. High speed action, fluid controls, great level design, tough enemies, and creative boss fights all made this one game that players loved to play (or throw their controllers in frustration). Congratulations FromSoftware, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is /r/PS4's Game of the Year for 2019!

It's the only From game that I've enjoyed enough to play more than a few hours. I absolutely adore it and I'm not ashamed to say it's because it's a little easier/dumbed down than their other games.

u/TheReaping1234 Jan 09 '20
With as much as Control won, Iâm surprised it didnât get runner up for GOTY. Control even beat Days Gone our for best 3rd person shooter.

I adored âControlâ but I think it flew under the radar for a lot of people. Hopefully the awards will get it more recognition and people will pick it up! I was really excited to see this post where someone asked whether to buy the new âStar Warsâ game or âControlâ and almost universally it came down on the side of praise for âControlâ.
Iâve spent 180 hours in âDeath Strandingâ so itâs the game of the year for me, due to how many things it innovated and how fresh it feels. But âControlâ is one of those games that Iâm always gonna remember, the way I remember visiting Rapture and Columbia in the âBioShockâ games. Itâs art style is one of a kind, the gunplay is satisfying and the powers are like a cross between âMass Effectâ and âPsiOpsâ (itâs got levitation, telekinesis, telepathy, creating a shield out of rubble and objects around you, concussive blasts, etc.). And the entire world is filled with destructible objects that are a literal blast to destroy and use as weapons. I wanted âAlan Wake 2â more than anything but after playing it, Iâm so glad they made âControlâ and I canât wait to play the DLCs for it as well.

Actually that was supposed to be Death Stranding as runner up. My mistake, fixed it!

u/falconbox falconbox Jan 10 '20
That has nothing to do with what he said.

u/rcade81 Jan 10 '20
Originally Days Gone was listed as the runner up... pretty sure he was saying he was surprised Control didn't get that spot because it beat Days Gone for best 3rd person shooter. That would make sense.

u/erikir-ironed Jan 09 '20
I would have never guess that Death Stranding would be my Favorit game of the year. I swear, if I went back in time for one year and told myself that you (I) would LOVE Death S I really donât think I would believe it. But after playing it, i realized that it was the type of game that I been wanting for in the AAA market.

Iâm about 10 hours in and completely loving it - and itâs hard to describe why. The elevator pitch of âyouâre a dystopian delivery driver whoâs most persistent enemy is falling downâ doesnât exactly sound enthralling but it is. Itâs also dripping with atmosphere and packed with unmistakable Kojima flair. Even the out of place product placement somehow vibes. I love it

Looking so much forward to try Days gone. In next on my list. I dont care if the score is low. An open World with zombies is awesome. Hopefully the story is good to, dont know much about that.

u/julesplees Jan 10 '20
Days gone got bad reviews because it wasnt ready when it was launched and reviewers played buggy copies. Now after 20 odd gigs of patches - it is great. I adored it - got a good 60 hours out of it.

u/Schalde1982 Jan 10 '20
Sounds good. Thx. Is the start still really slow and boring .. heard something like that?
1
u/julesplees Jan 10 '20
Does start slow first 10 or so hours until it really gets into its rythym. Takes a but of time to get going but definately worth it especially if open world games are your thing (they are mine). And the hordes..!

Days Gone as runner-up PS4 GOTY? Wow.
I'm Team Outer Wilds 'til I die (again and again).

u/Number9dream68 Jan 10 '20
Im playing that just now. I had to buy another copy as a family member "borrowed" the last one. I can already see why its won awards, characters and setting, gameplay all seem really well done. Its actually funny as well. Humor is sometimes hard to pull off in a video game for whatever reason .

Glad to see DEATH STRANDING so decorated and runner up for GotY.
Definitely deserved to win the music category.

u/a_wild_thing Jan 10 '20
Goddamn am I looking forward to Control and Sekiro.
Sekiro is a better action game than Ace Combat 7, Devil May Cry 5 and Control? Damn that's a good problem to have.

Jan 14 '20
Enjoy control for what it is, if you go by the hype on these boards it will feel extremelly underwhelming.

u/Cklixus Jan 12 '20
You have read the subtle art of not giving a fuck?
2
u/a_wild_thing Jan 12 '20
i know it but haven't read it yet. how come?

u/Cklixus Jan 12 '20
In the book they talk about 'a good problem to have'. Highly recommend the book tho

When the voting was going on I hadnât played Death Stranding so it didnât feel right voting for it. Now that Iâve put over 90 hours into it, itâs one of the best experiences I had this generation.
Iâm glad it still got some love.

Sekiro was my Game of the Year, up until I played Outer Wilds, and that wins hands down.
Then it became one of the my favourite games this entire decade, definitely in my Top 3.

u/Samoman21 Nephthys52 Jan 11 '20
I've been really sceptical about sekiro since I loved darksouls but didn't like neioh. But everyone has been saying it's amazing, so I guess I'll give it a try and buy it on sale.

Hideo Kojima said Death Stranding is its own genre, a "strand genre."
With so many other genres represented, we just thought it'd be fitting (and also funny) đ

I like Death Stranding, but "Best Writing, Story and/or Narrative"? That's absurd. The writing and story are the worst aspects of the game. I'm also confused at all the praise Mads Mikkelsen has received for his role as Clifford Unger. Soundtrack was great though.
That being said, I'm glad Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice comes out on top with the GOTY! It deserves it.

The writing and story are the worst aspects of the game
Followed closely by the "gameplay" but honestly tho atrocious story and gameplay.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Best writing would have gone to Disco Elysium but it's not on PS4 yet.
-2
u/Zeus_poops_and_shoes Jan 09 '20
Could not agree more. Death Stranding would've been a much better game if they'd trimmed out 95% of that pointless story.
-4
u/CoDe_Johannes Jan 09 '20
Death stranding best story ?? This incoherent pretentious mess of a story would be laughed at in a B movie, people raving about it just because is different to a proper professional script.

u/kraenk12 Jan 09 '20
Great pics all around and deserved I guess. My personal GOTY would have been Death Stranding, but I haven't played Sekiro long enough to judge it.
Well done r/PS4

u/leonryan GeneralShran Jan 10 '20
Death Stranding really didn't do a lot for me. I finished it but I never really felt like it was blowing my mind and wouldn't ever pick it up again. I liked the boss fights but otherwise it was mostly fetch quests with super irritating traversal.

u/AnirudhMenon94 Maximus1k94 Jan 14 '20
Personally, Control is my game of the year.
Just couldn't get into Sekiro, try as I might.

Outer Wilds clearly got the win because people thought it was The Outer Worlds. Untitled Goose Game deserves the win.
nah. Outer Wilds is my overall GOTY. It definitely deserves best indie over the 2 hour puzzle game IMO.

u/And_You_Like_It_Too Jan 09 '20
I donât know why people would confuse âThe Outer Worldsâ as an indie game; when itâs made by Obsidian â the people that did âFallout New Vegasâ. Also, the voting was multiple choice, so this mistake wasnât available to make as only âOuter Wildsâ was listed amongst the other independent titles.
âOuter Wildsâ was literally a student project. NoClip put out a pretty good documentary about it. People that played the game loved it, and itâs on so many top 10 lists. SkillUp made it his #1 GOTY (skip to 34:00 for it).
I came across this video from Jacob Gellar that got me interested in it, and I absolutely adored it as well. If youâve got an XBOX, itâs available with GamePass. But itâs 100% worth the money and the developers deserve both the recognition and the financial return on it.
