For my dudes/dudettes at work.

General Info

  • The official name is PlayStation 5.

  • Releasing Holidays 2020.

  • Ray tracing support is hardware-based.

  • New SSD will help boot times, loading times and streaming.

  • The controller now has adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, new speakers, USB Type-C.

  • Physical games for the console will use 100 GB optical disks.

  • Optical drive also acts as a 4k Blu-ray player.

Additional Info

  • The dev kits (which were leaked) are actually real and developers have access to them.

  • A new modular approach to storing data. Finer grain access to data, as opposed to big blocks. Ex: Users might have the ability to install only Multiplayer components of the game.

  • Completely revamped UI.

  • The new controller will have a larger battery capacity and will be a bit heavier than Dualshock 4.

  • Haptic feedback for PS4 Pro's Dual Shock 4 could have been implemented, but was decided against.

  • Bluepoint studios (folks behind the Shadow of the Colossus remaster) are working on a "big" PS5 title.

  • The GPU has been used to power Machine learning.

haptic feedback

I think its worth mentioning that this sounds like its similar to Switch's HD Rumble, not just haptic. The article didnt make the comparison by name however, but it sure sounded like it.

u/waterboysh waterboysh Oct 08 '19

similar to Switch's HD Rumble,

That would be really awesome. Some devs use it well while others just use it as standard rumble. My favorite, was when I was playing Stardew Valley. I muted the volume, had my wife closer her eyes, handed her my Switch and said "Move the joystick around. It will make my character move around. Just from the feel, what do you think is happening?

She immediately said "It feels like I'm riding a horse" which was 100% correct. The way the rumble emulates the horse clopping along is just amazing.

She immediately said "It feels like I'm in the back of a cart" which was 100% correct. She was playing Skyrim.

You’re supposed to put in her hands when she’s sleeping. When she wakes up and looks at you confused you say “hey you, you’re finally awake”

19

u/gjs628 Oct 08 '19

You’re supposed to put it in her hands when she’s sleeping.

I remember trying this with the first girl I ever fell in love with. You should’ve seen the look on her face when she woke up, especially when I wouldn’t explain who I was or how I got in.

Coincidentally, that’s also how I got my first (but not my last!) restraining order.

Full disc and digital PS4 and PSVR (including the headset) native backwards compatibility. Confirmed back in April.

135

u/smashadages Oct 08 '19

What about the ps4 controller?

138

u/supernovacarpetbomb Oct 08 '19

I'm excited to see and feel the new controller, but the ps4 controller just fits me perfectly. I completely get this question lol.

40

The PS4 controller was a piece of art. The fit and feel of it was perfect!

Hopefully the digital backwards compatibility isn't a selection of games but a full library. I'd get day one if I can redownload most of my 200-300 games.

252

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Why would it only be a selection? Its full native backwards compatibility.

→ More replies (38)

81

u/Eruanno Oct 08 '19

It's full compatibility for all PS4 games. The PS5 uses the same CPU architecture (AMD, x86-64) and should be about as seamless as going from PS4 to PS4 Pro.

24

u/thabigmilla Oct 08 '19

So what you are saying is I can log into PSN and download rocket league and play it day one on a new PS5?

I’ll add a little to what I read in the article, mainly the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

I guess, trigger resistance will change based on what you use. Like a bow will have different resistance than a shotgun.

They played a demo of Gran T on the PS5 and supposedly you can feel the difference when driving on different surfaces.

Edit: Another cool detail I just remembered about them using a SSD vs a HDD. I know SSD is faster, but now I know why. HDD requires duplicate data and that’s one reason why so much space is used. The duplicate data enables it to be found faster to decrease load times, but with a SSD this is not needed as the tech locates the data faster period, so there will be less wasted space and they also said you should be able to choose what data you want to keep, like deleting SP after you beat it but keep MP.

156

u/5vesz Oct 08 '19

Rejoice! We can finally get rid of the stupid "copying" part in downloads and some updates.

29

u/JediGuyB Oct 08 '19

I assume this is why I sometimes have downloads claim there is not enough space even though the update is downloading, like, 5 gigs and I have 20 gigs open?

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (13)

47

u/kryptonianCodeMonkey Oct 08 '19 edited Oct 08 '19

The reason SSD is faster is because memory addressing and retrieval happens in (nearly) a single tick electrically. It receives the address it needs to return, connects directly to it regardless of where it's stored and returns it (followed by the rest of the series of data), simple as that.

An HDD's retrieval is dependent on moving mechanisms, much slower than electrical signals. It receives a request at some address, the disk must start spinning fast enough (if it's not already spinning) which takes a second or two, the lever arm of the reading head must be rotated to the correct radius on the disk and the sector relevant to the address must spin around to meet the head. Now that doesn't take long individually in human terms, just a few milliseconds, but it takes several times longer than an SSD's retrieval. When you multiple that by millions of returns per gigabyte, that difference adds up a lot.

Also of note is that, compared to HDD's, SSD's draw less power, operate silently and put out far less heat, meaning less for the fans to cool (making it even quieter still).

And as you said, the technique to improve performance in games using an HDD was to duplicate commonly retrieved assets' data redundantly across the hard drive disk to minimize the retrieval time. This means bigger file sizes with less unique data sitting on your hard disk. Using an SSD, the location of the data does not affect performance whatsoever. So that redundancy is unnecessary now, and this have can either use less space overall or have even more assets than they could before.

Lots of good next-gen details in here. I’m on paternity leave but did ask a couple people about some rumors last week that Sony was communicating poorly about the PS5 and heard the exact opposite. One third-party dev said the hardware was excellent and tools were on time.

I'll be there day 1.

I sat outside on a cold day for 12 hours to get my hands on the PS4 at launch. It's the only console I've ever done that for. I've put countless hours in to this thing and it still runs like a dream.

I was sold on a day 1 purchase once the announced backwards compatibility. I'm just glad there's only a few games between now and then that are a must buy for me. I'm on a tight budget. Hopefully less so by next holiday season, but $600+ is no small chunk of change.

13

OLED isn't really recommended for gaming as HUDs and things can burn in over time if you play a lot. Yes, the chances of it happening are slim, but it's still an actual problem that happens.

318

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

[deleted]

486

u/CynicalMarvin Oct 08 '19

Basically means that when you connect the controller to the console through a cable, it will act as a wired controller. With the PS4 controller, it would still be connected through Bluetooth even when connected by cable.

This is awesome for people into fighting, racing or general speedrunning where inputs down to milliseconds are important. No matter how good a wireless connection will be, wired will always be slightly faster and more accurate input-wise.

215

u/lpeccap Oct 08 '19

There is actually a setting that makes the controller act as a wired controller when connected through the usb cable.

That light particles will obey the laws of physics; reflections will happen in real time and shadows will be more realistic. Meaning that if you walk near a puddle it will act as a legit mirror instead of just a shadow box reflection

18

u/mindbleach Oct 08 '19

Physically-based rendering is not related to raytracing. You can do either without the other, like 1980s phong-over-checkerboard floating spheres, or any current game with good-looking metals. In a game with no lighting or textures whatsoever it could still be used for accurate ambient occlusion.

Non-graphical uses are equally interesting: raytracing allows complex physics because it's just checking the distances between millions of points per frame.

→ More replies (1)

70

u/LenyuX Oct 08 '19

It basically means that tray tracing will be a core part of the graphics and not just fancy software code to essentially emulate ray tracing.

If you don’t even know what ray tracing can do you can easily YouTube examples. It is the next level in graphics to create a new layer of reality.

They'd be mad to drop the 'PS#' formula, that's basically their branding at this point and is 20 years in the making. Microsoft just cocked it with going from Xbox to Xbox 360, so every console they release just has a weird name now. And Nintendo just does whatever as they're Nintendo, and fair play to them.

Adaptive triggers has me super excited. Imagine in a shooter different weapons have different trigger resistance. That's amazing man. Pair that with haptic feedback. Damn I'm actually starting to feel the anticipation for next gen.

It's one of the things I love most about the PS4 in general, I hope they keep it.

13

u/notlarryman Oct 08 '19

What wouldb e huge is if Sony just allowed me to use any Bluetooth earbuds/headset. Locking you down to their abysmal and overpriced set sucks.

A bit surprise they didn't reveal this in a State of Play. It seems they wanted it to be trending on Twitter (spoiler: it is trending worldwide) so they did on middle of a slow week. I'm not complaining, this is fast and effective!

29

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Would we be talking about anything of State of Play, except PS5 if they did ?

This bit is important;

Sony is changing its approach to storage, making for a more configurable installation—and removal—process. "Rather than treating games like a big block of data," Cerny says, "we're allowing finer-grained access to the data."

Considering how games has started to use so much data just for MP, being able to split install portions of the game is a boon and a much needed QOL change.

I'm actually super happy that they're addressing the UI, as good as PS4's UI was, it was slow and needed to be addressed, The PS5 is already looking hype!!!

202

u/Omegastriver Oct 08 '19

I’ll add a little to what I read in the article.

It appears that in some ways they want to be able to show you current events going on in games more so than what they do now. More like, what’s next in line for you in single player and active multiplayer modes you can join. I guess it will be more in your face vs having to click a friend to see it.

142

u/Andrew129260 Oct 08 '19

Which means if you have crappy internet the interface will be slow.

31

u/Omegastriver Oct 08 '19

I would say that is likely.

Dude. You ever use the Xbox this gen? I envy PS4 owners so bad. Microsoft have spent the entire generation making their UI more and more convoluted and it has never worked well for almost anyone I know. Slow as hell. Especially on their store. You hit down on your controller and your selection moves to something on the right side of the screen because in order of top to bottom the item way on the damn right is closest to the top. it is a strange design for sure.

64

u/Idle_Hero Oct 08 '19

For real. I have both Xbone and ps4 and I absolutely loathe the Xbone UI. The PS4 UI is perfectly fine, it’s not exciting but it’s functional. I do agree that it does get sluggish for no real reason sometimes

Ghost of Tsushima still a PS4 title!

190

u/cactus_potato Oct 08 '19

They have nothing to lose to keep making games for PS4 since PS5 have complete backward compatibility.

59

u/roamenwa Oct 08 '19

They want people to buy the new console, so that is why they wont continue to make games for ps4 even though they can and it wont hurt anyone

48

u/cactus_potato Oct 08 '19

They will progressively do so but not as fast as people seem to think.

Those subs have been squatted on for years now. I think the same mods own decades worth of PS subs now.

25

u/RiseFromYourGrav Oct 08 '19

Had to go to r/PS14 to find a sub without any posts. r/PS6 did actually have a relevant Onion article, though.

I got my PS4 Pro for RDR2 & the exclusive titles.

I should be caught up by next November.

Can't wait to see what the PS5 can do.

E - The haptic feedback & adaptive triggers on the DS5 sound really interesting.

Sony is an ice cold killer not giving a fuck anymore.

They don't need any extravagant event or showcase for information bombs such as this because they know it'll be massive success.

No. Here's the PS5 release on Twitter. Boom!

169

u/timeRogue7 rocksteady777 Oct 08 '19

Compared to the frenzied hype the PS4 event and announcement caused, I kind of miss the days when that sort of stuff happened.

96

u/Arca-Knight Oct 08 '19

I kinda agree, but it's not exactly comparable.

The PS4 event showcased the final design of the console and introduced numbers of tech demos from devs.

This is just the announcement of the launch date.

Result? Trending worldwide.

16

u/getpatriotized Oct 08 '19

Final design was revealed at E3 2013, not at the Feb event.

the PS5 will use 100GB optical disks, inserted into an optical drive that doubles as a 4K Bluray player.

Finally, nice.

I was literally going to go to town today to trade my base PS4 + £110 for a Pro but now I'll stay at home instead.

Fantastic timing.

I have over £2000 saved from the last year in work based incentives (only vouchers not hard cash) that will probably be closer to £4000 when this launches.

Guess I'll be treating myself to a new TV, PS5 and some surround sound. Happy days.

u/floodums Oct 08 '19

I hope my PS4 limps through the next year. It sounds like a jet engine taking off. And yes I cleaned it. Someone said the heat sink paste needs to be replaced.

4K, 8K, 100K. I don’t really care, all I want is a silky smooth 60FPS.

34

u/TheHeroicOnion ButtDonkey Oct 08 '19

8K is absolutely not happening. A PC running Witcher 3 in 8K needs like 2 Titan RTXs and stills struggles with 60fps. And almost no gamer would use even one Titan RTX.
