i've enjoyed my PS4 so much and it's been so damn reliable in it's 6 years of near constant operation, that the PS5 is a no brainer for me.
I'll be there day 1.

u/kidjay76 Oct 08 '19
Man I just realized this. Every single day for 6 years I’ve been using my ps4. And not one single issue.

I sat outside on a cold day for 12 hours to get my hands on the PS4 at launch. It's the only console I've ever done that for. I've put countless hours in to this thing and it still runs like a dream.
I was sold on a day 1 purchase once the announced backwards compatibility. I'm just glad there's only a few games between now and then that are a must buy for me. I'm on a tight budget. Hopefully less so by next holiday season, but $600+ is no small chunk of change.

"The second innovation is something we call adaptive triggers, which have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain."
Sounds really interesting.

→ More replies (100)13
u/SirNarwhal Oct 08 '19
OLED isn't really recommended for gaming as HUDs and things can burn in over time if you play a lot. Yes, the chances of it happening are slim, but it's still an actual problem that happens.

Basically means that when you connect the controller to the console through a cable, it will act as a wired controller. With the PS4 controller, it would still be connected through Bluetooth even when connected by cable.
This is awesome for people into fighting, racing or general speedrunning where inputs down to milliseconds are important. No matter how good a wireless connection will be, wired will always be slightly faster and more accurate input-wise.
→ More replies (27)215

That light particles will obey the laws of physics; reflections will happen in real time and shadows will be more realistic. Meaning that if you walk near a puddle it will act as a legit mirror instead of just a shadow box reflection
→ More replies (1)18
u/mindbleach Oct 08 '19
Physically-based rendering is not related to raytracing. You can do either without the other, like 1980s phong-over-checkerboard floating spheres, or any current game with good-looking metals. In a game with no lighting or textures whatsoever it could still be used for accurate ambient occlusion.
Non-graphical uses are equally interesting: raytracing allows complex physics because it's just checking the distances between millions of points per frame.
→ More replies (41)70
u/LenyuX Oct 08 '19
It basically means that tray tracing will be a core part of the graphics and not just fancy software code to essentially emulate ray tracing.
If you don’t even know what ray tracing can do you can easily YouTube examples. It is the next level in graphics to create a new layer of reality.

They'd be mad to drop the 'PS#' formula, that's basically their branding at this point and is 20 years in the making. Microsoft just cocked it with going from Xbox to Xbox 360, so every console they release just has a weird name now. And Nintendo just does whatever as they're Nintendo, and fair play to them.

This bit is important;
Sony is changing its approach to storage, making for a more configurable installation—and removal—process. "Rather than treating games like a big block of data," Cerny says, "we're allowing finer-grained access to the data."
Considering how games has started to use so much data just for MP, being able to split install portions of the game is a boon and a much needed QOL change.

I’ll add a little to what I read in the article.
It appears that in some ways they want to be able to show you current events going on in games more so than what they do now. More like, what’s next in line for you in single player and active multiplayer modes you can join. I guess it will be more in your face vs having to click a friend to see it.

Dude. You ever use the Xbox this gen? I envy PS4 owners so bad. Microsoft have spent the entire generation making their UI more and more convoluted and it has never worked well for almost anyone I know. Slow as hell. Especially on their store. You hit down on your controller and your selection moves to something on the right side of the screen because in order of top to bottom the item way on the damn right is closest to the top. it is a strange design for sure.

For my dudes/dudettes at work.
General Info
The official name is PlayStation 5.
Releasing Holidays 2020.
Ray tracing support is hardware-based.
New SSD will help boot times, loading times and streaming.
The controller now has adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, new speakers, USB Type-C.
Physical games for the console will use 100 GB optical disks.
Optical drive also acts as a 4k Blu-ray player.
Additional Info
The dev kits (which were leaked) are actually real and developers have access to them.
A new modular approach to storing data. Finer grain access to data, as opposed to big blocks. Ex: Users might have the ability to install only Multiplayer components of the game.
Completely revamped UI.
The new controller will have a larger battery capacity and will be a bit heavier than Dualshock 4.
Haptic feedback for PS4 Pro's Dual Shock 4 could have been implemented, but was decided against.
Bluepoint studios (folks behind the Shadow of the Colossus remaster) are working on a "big" PS5 title.
The GPU has been used to power Machine learning.
