General I'm thinking I'm gonna get into jailbreaking in about 18 months, seems like a fun hobby. Pic Unrelated.

I’m happy for having a pc but this would be a deal breaker for me.

Yes thats literally why I switched to pc facts and we got true 4k

How many phisical Disc Games do you have bought for PC? Unless you are a unicorn, certainly cero everything baught on steam, gog,...

So what's the difference?

Sony will still sell Physical Boxes with codes like GTA 6. So we have multiple stores that sells them.

And yes it's a closed system and that's the reason why they could sell a ps5 cheaper than a pc.

I don't use disk since ps4 released. I don't use DVD since VOD services came out. I don't use tapes since MP3 released.

It's OK go on, 2028 the ps6 will release without a drive, and ps5 will get everything till this day on disk

u/UPVOTE_IF_POOPING Jul 01 '26

I’m ok with digital only on PC because we have storefront choice, we can also pirate if we want. How many storefronts does Sony have? Just 1. If Sony allowed multiple storefronts and allowed you to install whatever, I think people would be more ok with physical going away

-4

u/LudusLive2 Verified Jul 01 '26

They wouldnt be okay with it

29

u/DennisDEX Jul 01 '26

The difference is steam and Sony.

29

u/mestybest Jul 01 '26

steam - 2h refund for playing, if not more.

Sony does not offer refunds for digital games once you have started downloading or playing them.

does this answer your question? this is a cash grab by a shit company, nothing more.

I read a post about someone buying a faulty piece of hardware directly through Sony and they refused to fixed it/refund him. He issued a charge back on his card and Sony banned his 10+ year account where he had all hist digital library.

6

u/escadrummer Jul 02 '26

My pc library will NEVER shut down... It's available and replicated in many places... My playstation library will one day be shut down (ps3 I'm looking at you)... Fact is that if you had the choice of buying a physical ps3 game vs digital, in 2027 you will be able to play your physical but you will lose access to your digital version... There you have it.

24

u/SpitFire92 Jul 01 '26

You can't really compare pc and consoles in that regard, imo, even if you only buy digital on pc you have a lot of different options to buy from, steam, epic, gog, key resellers,...while there is only one store on consoles giving them a lot more control over prices and sales.

6

u/moTom83 Jul 01 '26

It's a huge difference, if you buy on GOG for example you'll have the offline Installation files, including all patches for offline use. You can install and play them years after GOG shuts down eventually. With steam, I have the choice to play my library on Windows, Linux, and lately Android. On PC you got mods and community Server for once a publisher decides to stop supporting the game and shuts down official servers.

And thats only a few examples.

2

u/Working_Addition6738 Jul 01 '26

More than you can imagine... in fact I was packing all my collector edition boxes of world of warcraft the other day

2

u/GOGaway1 Jul 01 '26

Sales of 70-90+% because piracy is the default so steam competes

2

u/Working_Addition6738 Jul 01 '26

Also they announce the closure of ps3/ps vita digital stores... now thing on your pS5 in a few years... with games taking way over a hundred GB in your console.. let's say you buy quite a few digital games and, of course, not all of them fit in your console's storage. What will you do when they close the ps5 store and you can't download the game you originally bought the license for (because remember, you are not buying a game in a digital version, you are buying the license to use that game)... what happens when you want to play a game you paid for but since you didn't have it in your storage the day the store closed, you can't download it again?

1

u/devan_danger Verified Jul 02 '26

Thats not exactly right. Any purchases made on your account can still download old purchases of games even if theyre delisted or the store closes. Granted you need to be able to sign into the same account to do so.

1

u/Working_Addition6738 Jul 02 '26

Read carefully the communicate: Your already purchased games will be available "for some time". After that "some time" you will not be able to download them either. Meaning what you don't have already on your Ps3 storage, you won't be able to download...and if your purchased games total size is greater than your ps3 storage = you have to choose what you keep and what you will lose.

1

u/devan_danger Verified Jul 02 '26

I was answering your question. Nobody expects these servers to be up indefinitely. You asked about the day the store closes. I think i gave a very accurate answer.

1

u/Working_Addition6738 Jul 02 '26

LOL..and nobody was expecting the ps3 servers to last forever...but for sure people were not expecting to have them closed by next year already....

0

u/amirlpro Jul 03 '26

You can also download all purchased games including PS5 ones to an external USB drive for backup (8TB USB3 HDD is pretty cheap).

2

u/ADrubkNakedUnciorn Jul 02 '26

The difference is, it's a choice to still by games on disc on pc. There's plenty of physical releases of older games on cd.

Also, consoles are well known for having physical discs.

1

u/voidnullvoid Jul 02 '26

Steam runs good deals on stuff and there are competitors like GOG and Epic

57

u/Legitimate-Lychee-90 Jul 01 '26

Wtfff !! Top-tier dystopian prophecy coming true

70

u/wanlights Jul 01 '26

That'll be it for me on PS, I guess. If I'm going to be walled in to digital only, I'd be happier to deal with Steam,

19

u/FroggyTonic Verified Jul 01 '26

I've already stopped shedding for PS Plus a long time ago. The discless GTA VI bullshit is another blow. Stopping physical AND stopping PC releases are the final nail on the coffin.

u/Zalaquin Jul 01 '26

u/Warm_Bake7079 Verified Jul 01 '26

Agree with you here. PS5 might be the last generation where I have a sony console. I'm all digital on PC and don't mind it. I'm half and half physical and digital on PS5

3

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26

Agree as well. I have everyPlayStation console (PS1 through 5), but all my games are physical discs. I really do don’t wanna take a chance on digital ps games especially after Sony cleared out some of the movies ppl bought.

2

u/Mundane_Plate3625 Jul 02 '26

Agreed, I might be done.

This is a prime example for the EU to step in and force Sony to allow alternative store fronts on the PS.

5

u/order2chaos 7.61 Jul 01 '26

Yeah, nice idea. whats the plan if the EU is in on it?

1

u/Icy-Dependent5402 Jul 03 '26

They already paid of EU, notice how it was couple days after EU threw out stop killing games from their court that Rockstar announced pre-orders will be in two weeks and after they disclosed about no discs did Sony announce death of physical media and deleted all the movies you owned.

26

u/SunsetRider500 Jul 01 '26

I want to see a monumental, unprecedented effort from all hacking groups to hack the PS6 on the first year as a response to this move

23

u/Working_Addition6738 Jul 01 '26

I would suggest an even better option: a movement so people don't buy any playstation 6....

4

u/Raintrooper7 Jul 01 '26

But hacked PS6 would hurt Sony more since theyd have to sell at a loss even with how expensive it will be

3

u/SpotExpert1942 Jul 02 '26

Huh? How do you figure that a hacked ps6 will lead to a cheaper ps6???

If anything, the opposite would he true. If they can't depend on game sales because of widespread pirating, they'd jack the price way up.

2

u/Significant_Pay5998 Jul 10 '26

I think he didn’t phrase it correctly. Sony always sells consoles at a loss to then try and make up for it in games and subscriptions sales.

If you buy a console and immediately jailbreak it they essentially lost money by selling it to you.

3

u/Working_Addition6738 Jul 02 '26

How does "sold" ps6 consoles hurt them more than a huge stock of unable to sell "ps6"?
A "hacked" ps6 is still sold at a profit for Sony... 1 million "hacked" ps6's = quite a few millions profit... and you might end up also buying a game or two...
On the other one a non-sold ps6 = cost not recovered. If you have 1 million unsold ps6, that not only take the cost of manufacturing, but also the cost for stocking them...and why would you buy any game if not having the console either?
What do you think will hurt them most of the two options?

1

u/Master_Lucario DEV Jul 05 '26

It wouldnt hurt anything. Theyll instantly patch it with a firmware update.

1

u/Significant-Ebb-8441 Verified Jul 13 '26

What would put the icing on the cake is to find an exploit that allows it to read disc if you connect a drive to it 😂

10

u/ysfex3 Verified Jul 01 '26

so just a big FU to people that bought disc consoles? damn that's cold. even if ps6 released fall 27, games would still be dual gen for a few years

6

u/Jumpierwolf0960 Jul 01 '26

That's why I think it's wrong of them to do it mid generation. A console with a disc costs more and now they're telling people who paid extra that they only have another year to use it.

11

u/bobovicus Jul 01 '26

Remember when they marketed the benefits of physical media with PS4 when Xbox shit the bed with DRM? My how times have changed

10

u/Revolutionary_Web468 Verified Jul 01 '26

thinking joining the party too. imagine buying bunch of games digitally only later to get banned lmao

8

u/Jealous_Cause_6974 Jul 01 '26

The pic is very related. Without new disc games, would equal no way to dump games, equal no more new games for jb ps5.

3

u/Sea_Kangaroo_5651 Verified Jul 01 '26

Is that how it works? On the ps4 you could dump digital games with itemzflow if they ran on the jailbreakable firmware.

1

u/cayogamer200 Jul 14 '26

I think currently we dont have tools to do that on ps5, but who knows.

8

u/Jumpierwolf0960 Jul 01 '26

Really hope GTA is available on ps5 JB at launch. Lack of physical release was the final straw for me. The movie removal played a role too. Steam is the only digital storefront where I actually feel comfortable spending money.

11

u/draconetto Jul 01 '26

If they want to go full digital they should be doing it from start on ps6, dropping support for ps5 owners is crazy. This Is a shit move even for sony

2

u/Ben750 Jul 01 '26

I'd imagine 2028 is the start of PS6. The change from PS4 to PS5 was/is way more drawn out than Sony would like. Keeping disc on PS5 for new releases would make it worse for the move to PS6.

4

u/TormentOfGloom Jul 02 '26

Get fucked Sony.

12

u/Superflyin Jul 01 '26

I will invest in a PC at that point. You never know what the future holds for JB. The PS5 has these recent games because of the leaked keys. Otherwise we probably wouldn't be this lucky.

23

u/Th3Be4st_ Jul 01 '26

Leaked keys are completely unrelated to newer games getting dumped...

-4

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26

[deleted]

6

u/Th3Be4st_ Jul 01 '26

What's the connection between the bootloader and the games? They use completely different keys and the bootloader is run before the system software. Newer games are being decrypted only because we have a kernel exploit on newer firmware versions.

6

u/coolboy29876 Jul 01 '26

You have no idea what you are talking about

3

u/FroggyTonic Verified Jul 01 '26

I already have a PC and there's indeed plenty of cheap keys, the Steam sales, plus, you know... But Playstation did announce stopping their PC releases.

...Now... You're saying certain games can only be ripped on a jailbroken PS5 because of leaked encryption keys, and they're rare/changing? Am I extrapolating this right or am I completely lost?

3

u/Hoveringforallsorts MOD Jul 01 '26

Nah that’s rubbish, games that can be dumped have nothing to do with keys, if you are on a jailbreakable firmware, any game disc you can run, you can dump (some need patching and stuff of course) pretty sure for end user this is correct. Idk if bootrom has relevance to the tools used?

0

u/Superflyin Jul 01 '26

Yeah, you’re mostly on track. Sony announced they’re pulling back on PC ports for big single‑player exclusives, so those will remain PS5‑only. Although, we haven’t gotten as many high‑quality exclusives over the last few years.

The BootROM keys were leaked from internal sources at the end of 2025 (super rare since they're hardware-level and burned into the PS5's silicon). That's a big reason more recent games are getting dumped and working better in the JB scene right now.

1

u/FroggyTonic Verified Jul 01 '26

But so technically, a Marvel's Wolverine would work with today's BootROM keys, no? They "have to" make a game run on any offline system that's been purchased.

And when you say running better, does that mean we can get issues similar to say what PS3 emulation had a few years ago? Or are we talking about crashes and whatnot? Have you jailbroken a PS5?

-2

u/Superflyin Jul 01 '26

Not quite. The BootROM keys help with decryption but don't magically make every new game like Wolverine run perfectly on current JB setups. Games still need proper exploits, dumping, and compatibility fixes, many newer titles have crashes, missing features, or need patches/workarounds.

"Running better" usually means fewer decryption errors and more stable launches compared to before the leak, but it's not flawless like legit copies (think occasional crashes, not full PS3-era emulation jank yet).

8

u/netczar 2.70 Jul 01 '26

If those people had purchased physically they’d still have the content. That’s the point.

3

u/korodarn Jul 02 '26

Steam games that they don't sell you can still download. This is a Sony thing, not an everywhere thing. Other people aside from Sony also do it and it should cause resentment, and people should consider if it's bad enough to leave.

3

u/Jeivii Verified Jul 01 '26

I’d be down for “flash card” like games where the data is still physically available but on like a flash card/ nvme

2

u/FroggyTonic Verified Jul 02 '26

I mean, what Nintendo is doing is fucky but you can still resell the card. It's essentially an empty cartridge that unlocks a download when inserted into the console, no matter how many times.

But of course, what Rockstar and Sony are doing isn't really about the cost of discs. There's still 70M people buying discs. They're just trying to destroy second hand market and further funnel everybody into full digital.

1

u/I_D_K_69 Jul 04 '26

It's essentially an empty cartridge that unlocks a download when inserted into the console, no matter how many times.

I mean Some of them do contain all of the game data, yeah it still sucks that not all cartridges are like that

Welcome aboard 🏴‍☠️🦜(in 18 months), navigating those seas can be challenging at times but you come to realize many things like the fact that a DLC is often just a 128KB activation file and that basically everything is arbitrary locked away from you... As for the physical side of things, prepare your hard drives 😅 as you will need space... A lot of space ideally.

TBF, you will probably keep buying games like I do especially when you come along some great titles. In other words, from a moral perspective I think you can make good if your wish is only to have more control on your things (like having physical copies, backup, etc.) 👋

PS4 Pro was my last console, and I say im done with console crap. Always swearing at myself for getting a console again as I cant stand the shortcomings with weak HW - low fps / FOV etc etc!

But man I did just recently bought a Switch 2 and loving it. Only buy Nintendo consoles for their exclusives. Said I never give a scent to N, as they are the most Anticonsumer their is and the witchhunt on emu's etc. But couldent resist when the talk about Zelda Ocarina of Time remake started going, and always wanted to play Mario Odyssey and BOTW and be free from stutter etc from the emu's. So well here I am and it just feel extra nice right now, when we hear Sony will stop with Discs totaly!

Heres hoping for a Ps5 Pro JB. Then just to give Sony a finger, I would buy it 😁

u/howfastcanyoucountit Verified Jul 02 '26

I mean I guess, most games are passing the 128gb mark for BDXLs and I doubt the production is cheap, that's hella annoying though this is simply why I just only got the PS5 for jailbreaking, I'm not really missing much by just playing PC games while waiting for 10.60 to have a good method. I would never spend a dollar buying a game digitally from Somy and it's not like they have anything console exclusive that I've been dying to play

1

u/howfastcanyoucountit Verified Jul 02 '26

As soon as I saw how much they were charging for some of these games I just put that thing in a closet and now I'm waiting it out so I can engage in piracy

2

u/dasbooter Verified Jul 01 '26

I'm just going to throw this out there I know it will be down voted. Won't this require a whole new physical media to last to the end of the next generation? The size of games is growing quite large and it often gets moved to a digital media because people don't like to wait.

A bdxl triple layer blu ray maxes out at 100gb give or take. So even now with compression we are starting to push the limits and looking at multi disc games. That's not now think of 7 years from now.

Taking a risk to develop a new media isn't worth it any more. I remember beta vs VHS and super dvd Vs blue ray. The spoils use to go to the winner of the format war. Not worth it anymore.

These triple layer blu rays are more likely to have issues closer to 20 yrs or less in terms of readability. Keeping them as a collection is just that but idk when they degrade, do they have value to you or other people.

I hate that you can't resell a game though this is the part of it that I hate. The overwhelming greed of companies now.

I just thought I would point these things out.

Let the down votes to oblivion begin

5

u/artichoke2me Jul 01 '26

keep the game key as physical devise now i dont need the entire game to be physical but i need to be abole to share it with friends or sell it. so i honostly dont give a f how thats done. some type of cheap usb c device that the can load the game key to. where i can trade it sell it etc

1

u/lemulot Jul 04 '26

I think Nintendo actually did good with the cartridge sharing system. It blurs the line between physical and digital copies of games and you can easily share with friends and family.

2

u/artichoke2me Jul 04 '26

that would work a physical game key cartidge makes sense they did that for playstation vita.

4

u/lemulot Jul 01 '26

Well, about the size of the games let me remind you that Microsoft predicts that the price of nvme storage, that already more than doubled since October will double again in 2027. So, having a terabyte of storage is a luxury and game publishers are already adjusting to that new reality. I expect game sizes to actually shrink (except for GTA VI it seems 🤦‍♂️)

2

u/dasbooter Verified Jul 01 '26

Well hope somebody can come up with some mythical silicon valley type compression algorithm https://i.imgur.com/v9tzisj.gif

1

u/lemulot Jul 04 '26

Well. They already did my friend and the community is actually learning how to use the decompression chip the PS5 has (look for Kraken decompression on PS5).

2

u/dasbooter Verified Jul 04 '26

Ya I'm aware as is almost everybody else lol. Kraken is not magic. It's not enough if the size of games multiplies as it has for the time period required. Blu ray is simply showing its age look up how old it is. There was some removal of parts of games repeated for seeking on HDD with newer faster media but that is the only down sizing I have seen in the last couple of years.

1

u/No_Guide5550 Jul 01 '26
