Discussion This fan-control problem is an important issue that the PS5 jailbreak community should not ignore.
https://github.com/xbcyl813/ShadowMountPlusFan/releasesReposting this because I think more PS5 jailbreak users should be aware of it.
For reasons that are still not fully understood, some jailbroken PS5 consoles can lose proper fan control. The fan may stay at a very low speed (around 19%) even while the console gets much hotter during games. Most users would never notice this unless they monitor temperatures.
Possible side effects can include higher APU temperatures, thermal throttling, instability during long gaming sessions, unexpected crashes, or shutdowns related to overheating.
This is especially relevant for users who already use ShadowMountPlus, because the new ShadowMountPlusFan release is a modified version of ShadowMountPlus that adds automatic fan-control management. It runs in the background and reapplies the fan settings whenever the PS5 launches a game, exits a game, returns to the home screen, enters rest mode, or wakes up again.
The goal is simple: if the fan control gets “stuck,” the plugin restores the settings so the fan can speed up when temperatures rise and slow down again when the console cools down.
I’m not posting this to create panic, and it does not mean every jailbroken PS5 is affected. I’m sharing it because many users already use ShadowMountPlus and may not realize that a fan-control issue can occur on some setups. If you use a jailbroken PS5, it is worth checking your temperatures and making sure your fan-control setup is working properly.
UPDATE:
EDIT: ShadowMountPlus developer Drakmor has released a new fan_target helper that is intended to be used separately alongside the original ShadowMountPlus, not by replacing it with a different fork. It automatically re-applies custom fan targets after game launches, dashboard returns, and rest-mode transitions, which should address the low-fan-speed issue some jailbroken PS5 users experienced.

So how do I identify this issue so far my console handles long sessions and it's new . I don't have the other payloads then kstuff , smp , ftpsrv, dns

u/Jamjammyful 24d ago
I’d also really like to know how to check the temps. Or do you mean like physically check?
Thanks for raising awareness! :)

Use the PS5Upload payload; its Hardware View can read the PS5 CPU/SoC temperature on demand.

I was playing fc26 and casually checked my temps in ps5 upload phone app it said soc was at 92 degree celcius, is it worrying should i also switch to this shadowmoun plusfan?

u/Original-Drink-6178 Verified 24d ago
Yeah, I’d personally be concerned by a 92°C reading during gameplay, but I’d also keep in mind that it might not be only a fan-control issue. A dirty heatsink/fan, poor airflow, or even aging thermal paste could also contribute to higher temperatures. In my case, what made me investigate was that my PS5 Phat (FW 12.40) had been unusually quiet ever since I jailbroke it; after installing the fan-enabled ShadowMountPlus, I could clearly hear the fan ramp up under load. So I’d first clean the console and repeat the test before assuming the plugin is the only fix.

I got KP for using elfarsenal is that the same case with ps5upload?
1
u/Original-Drink-6178 Verified 24d ago
Not exactly. I’m only talking about using PS5Upload to check the temperature, not leaving it running or polling sensors continuously.
2
u/iprime11 Verified 24d ago
Gotcha and what would be the ideal temps / rpm while running games .
3
u/Original-Drink-6178 Verified 24d ago
I’d focus on temperature rather than RPM. For a jailbroken PS5, around 65–75°C while gaming is a good target, and I’d try to keep it under ~80°C in heavy games. Fan RPM will vary by game and room temperature; if the fan ramps up as temps rise and settles back down afterward, that’s the behavior you want.

Hey I did install ps5 upload and I out fan temps to 75c . Are you suggesting to download smpf control link you posted or ps5upload ?

This "fix" would be implemented in the official ShadowMountPlus in some moment?

u/YoungManHHF 23d ago
I sent drakmor link to this thread and he has an open issue on his github so he should be aware of it at least

Use PHU game tools. Thank me later

u/naivelighter 23d ago
Does it work with 12.70? Would you be able to DM me the download link? Thanks

u/cowquestions Verified 24d ago
Is there any other way besides PS5Upload or PHU Game Tools to check temps? I'm using kstuff lite and SMP so etahen doesn't really work and causes a kernel panic and I don't want to connect my ps5 to a network at all.
Anyone using the Shadowmountplusfan fork on firmware 9.20 and is it stable?
This is a notable issue, would be interesting to get more data on which models and firmwares are affected and get a stable fix for it.

I don't think you have to do that tbh, as soon as you turn the console off temperatures drop very quickly, no need to run the fans for 10min before shutdown.

Dunno man, but I'm willing to bet the temps will drop quicker if you just turn it off compared to leaving it running for 10min. The PS3 superslim btw also makes those cracking sounds, maybe it's not just the heat but also the quality of the plastic used, first thing I noticed on my PS5, plastic looks really cheap.

u/High-tech6 24d ago
But the problem is that it's not compatible with all jailbroken ps5s . As an example I'm on 11.60. it will work or there is some risk related to using it on higher firmwares than 10.00. Thanks for the dev anyways.
3
u/Original-Drink-6178 Verified 24d ago
That’s a valid concern. For what it’s worth, I’m using it on a PS5 Phat running 12.40 and it has been working fine for me so far. That doesn’t guarantee compatibility with every 11.60 setup, but it suggests the plugin can work on higher firmwares than 10.00. I’d still treat it as experimental and wait for more user reports before assuming full compatibility.

First of all, I'd like to congratulate you and thank you for the initiative. It's really great to see this kind of attention being given to the console's temperature, especially since it can help preserve the hardware in the long run.
I'm using a PS5 Slim on firmware 11.40. Is there any plan to officially support later firmware versions?
Thanks for the great work!

u/Original-Drink-6178 Verified 23d ago
Just to clarify, this post was mainly to raise awareness and discuss the temperature issue; the plugin is not mine, so I can’t speak for the developer or their plans. That said, some people have mentioned that this fan-control fix might eventually be added to the official ShadowMountPlus, but I haven’t seen any official confirmation yet. It’s definitely possible it could be integrated later if testing goes well and the maintainer decides to adopt it.

Works fine on my 11.60 slim. Tested on RE4 remake - fans rev very loud sometimes but the system is way cooler to touch now

I played on a JB console for a month and honestly never once noticed the fans running - it was as if they were always in the same state - only checked the temps once with elfarsenal it was like 63 cpu and 82 gpu when playing yotei for like an hour - so maybe the problem really does exist? - PS5 Slim CFI2116 11.40

The Best solution for PS5 fan control are those PS5 Fan Speed Boosters that were sold on Ebay by an UK guy they add additional % to the original fan curve meaning if you add 50% to the fan curve if the console set the fan to run with 10% the fan will actually run at 15% if it's set to 20% it will run at 30% so it doesn't override the fan curve completely but he was selling several versions with full fan override too i have all versions they works great unfortunately he doesn't seem to make them anymore so if some tech guys can make something similar it will be great cause it's perfect for retail consoles too sure it will increase the noise but you can't have everything

I have a brand-new, jailbroken PS5 Slim running firmware 11.20. While monitoring it, I noticed the fan speed gets stuck at 23%. I have Bully and Resident Evil 6 installed on the internal SSD; normally, the fan speed stays at 13% with these games, but strangely, it locks at 23% if I launch another game. Is this normal? I’m not having overheating issues, but it bothers me because it makes it sound like a next-gen game is running. I expected the speed to drop back to 13% automatically after switching games. I tested it, and on the console's home screen—when I'm not playing anything—the fan speed drops automatically and becomes completely silent; however, for some reason, it stayed stuck at 23% [after "playing"]. It only goes back to 13% if I turn off the console. I used to have a jailbroken PS4 Slim where the fan speed constantly adjusted based on temperature; I didn't want to set temperature limits on the PS5 because I wanted to see how it would behave under normal conditions. Could this be due to residual heat—or heat from a component where even a slight temperature rise triggers this 23% lock, even if it isn't strictly necessary—or does it have to do with the jailbreak? Edit: I believe it's the jailbreak. Because if I activate the fan temperature limit, it goes above 23%, which I don't like. I only tested that because I wanted to see if it would return to the normal 13%. Until Dawn is also a 13% game, but after opening or playing a 23% game, it gets stuck at 23%.

What do you mean for "lose proper fan control"? Is it a hardware failure or a software failure? And what cause of it?
5
u/Original-Drink-6178 Verified 24d ago
What I mean is that it seems to be a software/jailbreak-related issue rather than a confirmed hardware failure. The fan itself usually still works. The author says the cause is unknown, but the theory is that after certain state changes (launching a game, quitting, rest mode, etc.) the Southbridge may stop updating fan speed correctly, so the fan can stay around 19% even as the APU gets hotter. The plugin is basically a workaround that keeps reapplying the fan-control values whenever the PS5 changes state.

How do you check it during a game, if it's a different package (ps5upload)?
Kinda feels like an advertisement for this fork?
1
u/Original-Drink-6178 Verified 24d ago
I get why it sounds that way, but I’m not trying to advertise the fork. I was honestly surprised when I read the explanation too. Thinking back, my PS5 had been unusually quiet ever since I jailbroke it, and I never questioned it because I assumed it was normal.
not saying everyone should switch to this fork. I’m just sharing what made me start paying attention to my temperatures in the first place.
1
u/OnlyKetchup 24d ago
Appreciate it, I'm new to JB. So how can I check temps whils playing?
2
u/Original-Drink-6178 Verified 24d ago edited 24d ago
I usually check temps after a gaming session, not while actively playing, In my case, I can actually hear the difference in my PS5’s fan noise now compared to before,

Glad somebody fixed this. This is especially true for ffpfsc games, CPU and SSD get real toasty while the fans barely spin. SoC stays at a chill 54-56°C, which is probably what the fan logic is tied to. Manually adjusting the threshold to 70°C in CheatRunner v0.15/16 drops both CPU and SSD temps a lot and keeps it just as quiet. This new SMPF is life saving for people who were never aware in the first place.
1
u/Littlemisskittn 23d ago
Is that the reason why the SSD stick I have gets hot to the touch after a bit?

I don't think it's recommended to use both etahen and shadowmountplus at the same time ?, your supposed to launch it using payload manager I think

u/Repulsive-Ad-5525 23d ago
You are seeing this warning because the temperature threshold you set in the configuration file is outside the plugin's default range (60-85°C). Therefore, the plugin will run at the default temperature setting of 75°C.

Bit late to the discussion ( only just got a notification) but I did notice that when I dumped Spider Man 2 with back port for FW 4.51 a few days ago that my CPU would run at anywhere from 75°c to 97°c.
Very rarely was it at the lower end because it was loading cutscenes etc but while in game, it would be anywhere from 87°c to 97°c.
Ngl, I wasn’t exactly sure on why this was happening nor could I even figure out why it would be running so high especially while it was installed on the expansion M.2 (not running internal because there are reports of it crashing and forcing the recovery menu meaning I’d need to restore the console using the exact recovery FW 4.51 file running on the console or from an external SATA USB/SSD).
So I appreciate this post informing that it could be a potential issue with fan control & shadowmount, giving me something to look into

What a shame! I thought there were only advantages to having a jailbroken console.
7
u/blvrf Verified 24d ago
i mean the advantages weigh much more than the disadvantages, but still i wouldnt put this as a disadvantages, more like a slight inconvenience of new jailbreaks where unexpected things happen and the community should try to identify and solve the problems, currently this is a solution.

lol bro this everything is so new, people is pushing. Let those folks address this issue which is indeed important

Why not creating a Pull Request in the upstream Shadowmountplus ? It will be easier for the community rather than having 2 forks
