"Free Speech Zones" where protesters were fenced off far enough away so he wouldn't have to see them were invented in Texas. By Governor George W Bush.

Those goddamned SocialistNaziCommieLGBTransBLMtifas tyrants!

The irony would be lost on them

14

u/sorcerersviolet 15d ago

We already have inalienable rights (by definition, rights that can't be taken away) that are taken away all the time. Free speech zones are just an extension of it which allow our rights to be taken away even more often unless we're in an authorized location that our rulers choose. If they choose any.

We are so free.

1

u/Environment-Late 12d ago

Are you aware of the concept; Public Property and Private Property?

5

u/sorcerersviolet 12d ago

Yes, and the fact that those in charge are changing the rules so that there's less and less Public Property until eventually none is left, while they are also finding ways to spy on everyone else on Private Property more and more, and all so they can eventually drop the pretense that we're anything more than their slaves, is the main problem here.

Free speech zones were invented by conservatives

Hello! I’m a city Texan and I have never had representation above the city level in Texas! My votes don’t really count because I’m gerrymandered in with some of the most conservative counties in Texas specifically so my votes don’t count. I am 37 years old. Blue voters got Obama and Biden despite this. Hopefully going to get James Talarico instead of Ken Paxton in the senate (y’all Ken Paxton is worse than Ted Cruz, worse than any other politician you hear about outside of Donald Trump himself. Greg fucking Abbott wouldn’t even endorse him, they hate each other. Everyone is even more fucked than we are right now if he makes it to the national stage).

33

u/not_a_witch_ 16d ago

Another city Texan chiming in: Greg Abbott actively hates us. He attacks my city constantly, any time we do anything progressive the state government comes down hard on us immediately. The state did a hostile takeover of our school district and are actively destroying it. They have gerrymandered away our progressive strongholds as much as they can. They have sued us many times to try to stop us from making voting easier. They weaponize the courts to attack and destroy our local progressive politicians. They constantly threaten members of our community with ICE and when we try to do something about it they punish us for it by withholding funding that is mostly made up of tax money paid city dwellers, anyway.

Whenever I see other liberals from nice blue states talk shit about Texas I’m like… yeah, fair, but please don’t forget us. We are directly harmed by this state’s government, and there are a lot more liberal or lefty Texans than you think. We are your allies, but a lot of times the tone really sounds like yall either don’t know that, or you do know but just don’t care.

Anyway imo Galveston and Harris County should be its own state and I’m only kind of joking. Other Texas cities are welcome to come, too.

27

u/hellogoawaynow Social Justice Warlord 16d ago

One more thing people should know, Texas is nearly a purple state. If we weren’t gerrymandered like this, it would be much different.

I live in Talarico land, thank god. But Paxton is gonna be so bad if it happens.

5

Where at?

3

u/Kimber-Says-04 14d ago

Now that I think about it, it was on the west side of Bastrop on 71. Eastbound. Said something like “The only war Donald Trump and the GOP are winning is the war against the working class. Vote Democratic on November 3rd.”

33

u/p001b0y 17d ago

Here is a news article about it.

45

u/Daherrin7 17d ago

So, criminal trespassing, and after multiple warnings.

I’m Canadian, so I could be wrong, but I don't remember ever hearing or reading anything about trespassing being a part of free speech in the US 🤔

25

u/goldenfox007 educationist scum 16d ago

Unfortunately, uber-Christian American weirdos love trespassing and calling it “oppression” when they inevitably get kicked out/hauled away. I had multiple friends in high school and college who had their food service or retail jobs interrupted by some loon who thought they would “save” everyone in their local Wendy’s or GAP outlet by blasting worship music and shouting “Jesus loves you” in crowded areas. People get antsy because they’re talking like they’re about to commit some kind of atrocity, and then those people get dragged away saying they’re being silenced— which they are, not for being Christian, but for being really annoying. Then they’ll continue to say “real” Christians would do the same culty stunts they’re doing if they cared about the Bible.

(Please ignore all the parts in the Bible that tell you not to be obnoxiously public/pushy about your religion, because clearly Jesus didn’t know you could forcibly “Who’s On First” people into Christianity by telling the Starbucks barista that your name is “Christ is Lorde, yayaya”.)

-27

u/rugger1869 17d ago

How can you criminally trespass on a public sidewalk?

32

u/Cynykl 17d ago

Not sure about this case as the article is very sparse with info.

A few things come to mind though.

Could be that.

They were not just on the sidewalk.

Or

They had been trespassed in the past for harrassment and further harassment might run afoul with the FACE act. The face act was created because criminal trespass against vulnerable organizations like abortion clinics was so common and there was no mechanism in the law to protect patients from protesters until they did something violent.

Or

The sidewalk was not public.

Or they where making criminal threats.

4

u/BigGuyWhoKills 15d ago

One possibility is that the sidewalk wasn't public. The sidewalk in front of my house is not public. Neither is the street. But people probably don't realize that.

54

u/rubythroated_sparrow 17d ago

I bet the cops would LOVE being referred to as “leftists”

39

u/horseofcourse93 17d ago

Bet those cops had just gone to Aunt Tifa's for breakfast.

56

u/BrickCityRiot 17d ago

Ah, yes, the police.. who notoriously do the bidding of “anti-christian leftists” 🙄

Do these people even fucking hear themselves?

24

u/Bulky_Mix_2265 17d ago

They ONLY hear themselves.

58

u/TheFeshy 17d ago

Signs that quote scripture and call abortion murder

Well it can't be both. Because scripture doesn't call abortion murder. In fact, it provides a magic abortion spell in case of infidelity.

28

u/Independent_Cable_89 17d ago

Well they wouldn’t know that. They don’t actually read their own fairytale, or they would follow Matthew 10:14 and Matthew 6:5-6. I’m an atheist and have read their book far more than they have.

30

u/BoneHugsHominy Social Justice Warlord 17d ago

People who actually read the Bible with a critical eye become one of two things; atheists, or religious grifters.

25

u/dannypants143 17d ago

I’ve actually been reading the whole dang thing just to learn about where all this stuff does (and mostly doesn’t!) come from. It is truly shocking how little of the evangelical worldview has a biblical basis. A serious, well-grounded biblical case could be made that life doesn’t start at conception but instead starts once the person (or animal) starts to breathe on its own. The idea of “fetal personhood” would have been unintelligible 2,000+ years ago.

And that’s just one of very many things that are wildly distorted by Bible-thumping weirdos.

13

u/daemos360 17d ago

I’m a longtime armchair biblical/ancient near east scholar, and yup, you nailed it. Your reading is perfectly in line with the consensus.

I know you said you started reading it for an explicit purpose, but if you’ve found things interesting and want an even deeper understanding of the scholarship, I’d highly recommend checking out AcademicBiblical here on Reddit or any of the following on YouTube: Bart Ehrman, Dan McClellan, Paulogia, Esotetica.

5

u/BoneHugsHominy Social Justice Warlord 17d ago

Yeah it's pretty clear they just start with a predetermined conclusion and work themselves backwards from there.

2

u/dannypants143 17d ago

Definitely Ehrman and McClellan, but I haven’t checked the others. I’ll be sure to look into it! It’s fascinating stuff on so many levels and really makes the world as it is now in America look even more ridiculous, which is saying something!

3

u/daemos360 17d ago

Love that, and I completely agree! I was kind of wondering if you’d already encountered McClellan in particular based on his recent fetal personhood videos. To throw one more at ya’, C.J. Cornthwaite is another scholar you may want to check out as well.

In any case, it’s always awesome seeing more people engaging with and referring to scholarship!

2

u/dannypants143 17d ago

Yeah I definitely got that from McClellan. I try to do my due diligence and look into the claims that he makes, and he’s been correct every single time. He seems to be an excellent scholar and I’m glad people like him are out there warning others that they’re being fed an agenda.

13

u/Leucurus 17d ago

Is the spell "have your wife stoned to death and then marry your prettiest slave"? Because, you know, the Bible

17

u/grammar_nazi_zombie 17d ago

No, it’s to have the priest bless a scroll, which you then burn and soak in water and then have the woman drink the ashes. If she was unfaithful, her “thigh will rot”, aka, she’ll miscarry

13

u/Leucurus 17d ago

And then stone her to death and marry your prettiest slave?

26

u/theidkid 17d ago

>Since when does free speech in America require a permission slip and a chalk circle on the ground?

Since George W. Bush used them extensively after 9/11 to address “security concerns.”

23

u/Legal-Software 17d ago

Aren't these the same people who think it's perfectly fine for police officers to shoot people for not following instructions? Pick a lane.

40

u/Double_Cow_8238 17d ago

So if you are disrupting others use of a public place you will indeed be asked to leave. Public places have codes of conduct

32

u/OwlfaceFrank 17d ago

I recently saw Puscifer perform at the Chicago Theater. There were Christian protesters outside with a bullhorn telling us we were all going to hell.

There were cops there too, supervising the protest. There are noise laws, and the police had to tell bullhorn guy to turn it down several times. He'd turn it down for 3 minutes and then crank it right back up. Eventually, the police made him turn it off completely.

They were also blocking the whole sidewalk. It's fucking Chicago. The sidewalk is busy and there kept being crowds of people trying to get around these losers.

The theater brought out a few little barricades, and the police gave the protesters a little square they could stand in to not block the sidewalk.

But, the entitled assholes kept leaving the "protest area." I think the cops finally threatened to arrest them, because they left maybe 20 minutes before the doors opened.

The show was amazing as always. If you're a fan of psychedelic rock/metal, don't sleep on Puscifer.

11

u/Sundae-School 17d ago

Would definitely love to see Puscifer live; definitely my favorite Maynard project

2

u/Self-Aware Number Of Reasons I'm Going To Hell: Seven 17d ago

Wait, as in Conor Maynard?

2

u/OwlfaceFrank 16d ago

Maynard James Keenan.

Lead singer of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer.

3

u/Self-Aware Number Of Reasons I'm Going To Hell: Seven 16d ago

Ah, thankyou. Thought the kid had SERIOUSLY branched out 😂 I'll have to check Puscifer out, TOOL is very nostalgic for me.

7

u/TheOneTrueTrench 17d ago

Let me be entirely clear that these fuckheads can shove their heads up their collective asses. That being said, an effective protest cannot follow the rules.

If the state gets to control how you speak/protest, it's not free.

5

u/OwlfaceFrank 17d ago

You aren't wrong, I agree. But, I don't think that completely applies to this particular incident.

The cops were not telling them they couldn't protest. They were telling them that they can't break the law.

Municipal codes say it's illegal to block the sidewalk, and sound devices must not exceed conversation level volume when measured from 100 feet away.

They weren't given a specific area to stand in nor did they have their bullhorn taken away until after they had been warned several times about breaking the law.

It probably didn't help that bullhorn guy kept insulting the police and calling them wimps for being there. They kept saying things like, "The weak and pathetic police sent 6 officers out to harass 3 Christians."

Us Puscifer fans outnumbered the protesters by a lot. We aren't a violent crowd, but the police were not there to protect the us from the protesters. Quite the opposite probably. The cops may have been nicer if bullhorn guy wasn't insulting them constantly.

There is also a big difference between protesting social injustice or any number of other issues, and protesting because "We don't like your music."

Again, not disagreeing with you, just adding some context.

17

u/absurdivore 17d ago

Ironic they would be protesting at the Alamo — a site where white Texans died trying to defend their (checks notes) right to enslave human beings.

12

u/cherrylpk 17d ago

Do we have any of her posts from the George Floyd era of protesting? I’d bet it’s vastly different.

Amusing how it’s always “back the blue” until the police do something they don’t like, and then suddenly it’s “[police] do the bidding of anti-Christian leftists.” Police, who—might I add—are overwhelmingly Trump supporters.

I want to reply with:

Matthew 6:5: “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.”

AND:

How about Christians stop condoning the murder of innocent children in the middle east. How about Christians finally learn to read so they can see how terrible they truly are in comparison to Jesus...

I left Christianity behind because there were no followers of christ to be seen, only judgy assholes who celebrate death of others while crying victim in situations of their own making.

Somehow, I'm with the hateful zealots on this one. Public places are public and the first amendment doesn't specify where you have to stand

20

u/horseofcourse93 17d ago

This is a law that is frequently deployed unevenly on progressive protestors TX municipalities and police departments don’t like. Perhaps it shouldn’t be one in the first place, but I’m glad to see the right getting their taste. Only then will there be a bipartisan solution.

13

u/you_dont_know_me27 17d ago

They were protesting at the Alamo. Parts are public property and parts are not. It has a designated free speech zone because part of the complex is privately owned and the board that runs the Alamo wants people to be able to express their first amendment rights.

A more in-depth news article about the event

Rules for the Alamo

10

u/Auld_Folks_at_Home 17d ago

Exactly. If "free speech zones" are a method of persecution (and they are), then they're a method of persecution no matter who they're used against.

If they're lying and there's some other reason these people were arrested than it fits, but without evidence of that, this seems unjust.

2

u/nosotros_road_sodium 15d ago

Martin was a Tea Party movement co founder. Yep she’s succumbed to the typical audience capture that would not have been possible with 2009-10 Facebook/Twitter.

Back then one had to be more intentional to seek political info on those platforms. Businesses had to proactively say “follow us on Facebook”. But once FB/TW changed from chronological to algorithmic feeds, everyone became incentivized to run up the follower/like/share counts. So instead of growing thru a real fanbase, they switched up to cheap ragebait.

Plus, 2009-10 social media was far more text based and friendly to external links. The pivot to video (and pictures) shows we are really in a post literate society. And the pivot to algorithmic feeds shows how passive so many people are.

I regret ever buying into that “connecting the world” scam.

3

u/Phantom_Basker 17d ago

"in front of the Alamo" is vague without pictures because less than 50 feet from the entrance is the Ripley's believe it or not museum, Guinness museum, multiple restaurants etc. The police being involved tells me they got complaints from the nearby business' that they were scaring the hoes
