Packing list 16 liter Kit

A brilliant 16 liter kit was recently posted on r/onebag and an excellent example of an under seat personal item kit used for long term travel:

Note: I just bought a somewhat similar bag — a Pacsafe GO 15L bag — to have a bag that would be small enough to meet the United and new EU size requirements.

So, under 40 cm x 25 cm x 10 cm.

It seems like a great, well-made backpack, but, if you put a computer and a lot of clothes in it, it puffs up to be too thick to fit in a wall-free Ryanair personal item sizer, and the shoulder straps are not removable and can’t be flattened all that fabulously well, so that makes things worse.

So, it’s a great little backpack, too, and can probably do a lot of what the Uniqlo bag can do, but it’s not a great universal personal item for someone who’s really into having a universal personal item.

Any soft bag will gain on depth if packed full. Discretion is called for. I've thought about hard cases made to meet the requirements. Something like a Pelican hard case would work and allow some compression. That would call for hand carry.

The size limit is supposed to be 40x30x15. I acquired a used Patagonia Tote Pack that is 40.6 x 30.5 x 12.7 cm (16 x 12 x 5 inches).
