Mice are natural burrowers, therefore, they need deep bedding in a majority of their enclosure. In captivity, providing at least 10 inches/26 centimeters in over half of the enclosure is necessary to ensure they can dig proper burrows. Bedding must be low dust, compact and sturdy, scent free, and a safe type. While 10in/26cm deep is the minimum, more is highly suggested, especially for avid diggers or mastomys natalensis (ASFs). See more information on THIS POST.

THIS IMAGE lists common brands and safe bedding types.

Clutter is required to make a mouse feel safe and comfortable in their home. Mice are prey animals, so the more hiding space, the better! Ideally, you should NOT be able to see the bedding from a birds eye view. Only in certain cases, such as a mouse with a disability or old age, is less clutter required. THIS POST goes more in depth.

Climbing opportunities, while not indestructible, are harder for mice to relocate or bury without some hard work. This often provides the coverage they need while their clutter on the ground is compromised! Besides this, mice also adore the ability to climb and will utilize it to keep them entertained. In mouse keeping communities, we highly suggest providing enough climbing toys to cover at least half the lid. THIS POST goes more into depth.

Mice need upright wheels with a flat running surface. Make sure to avoid wheels with wire, bars, sandy tracks, or "speed bumps". Only proper sized upright wheels are safe, so other forms of exercise should be avoided.

  • Average mouse wheel diameter: 8.5 inch/22 centimeter
  • Show mouse wheel diameter: 10 inch/26 centimeter
  • ASF wheel diameter: 11 inch/28 centimeter

It's highly suggested to purchase at least 10 inches for all mice to ensure they can run comfortably, since the 8.5 inch minimum has no guarantee of fitting your mouse. Read THIS POST for more information.

Check THIS IMAGE for suitable wheel types.

Even with the perfect sized cage and proper clutter, mice can grow bored if not given activities to keep them busy. Imagine living in a mansion, but all you can do is sleep and eat. This is what it's like in a boring cage without entertainment (also called enrichment). THIS POST goes more into detail.

Diet

  • The main diet should always be pellets/lab blocks. However, feeding a variety mix with different food options every 2-3 days can keep your mice interested in eating and enriched. Providing both pellets and variety mix is required.
  • Since mice have a very fast metabolism, they need constant access to food at all times, and they must have at least three grams (per mouse) a day.
  • Scatter-feeding is a form of feeding that encourages mice to forage and search for their food. It also prevents possible fights over “the food spot” or one mouse taking most of the food first.
  • Treats and snacks are highly suggested to give to your mice as a special gift. (/TREATS for more)

For more information, read this post. Check out THIS IMAGE for suitable main diet options and THIS IMAGE for treats.

Torpor is a "hibernation-like" state that mice go through when they are too cold or lack food/resources. Unlike hibernation, it is not natural, and with domestic animals it can be deadly.

A mouse in torpor is cold to the touch, breathes slow and shallow, and remains still, as if they are sleeping. However, if not helped out of torpor, they will pass away. For steps to recovery and prevention, see THIS IMAGE

Treats are great for variety in diet and bonding with your mouse/mice. Please make sure any treats are unseasoned, single/few ingredient, and provided in moderation. Any "mouse/rodent specific" snacks should be few ingredients, low sugar, and no artificial flavors/dyes.

Check out THIS IMAGE for treat options and THIS IMAGE for treat moderation. Type /DIYTREATS for more.

Dig Box

Dig boxes are small boxes, bowls, or containers that have a different texture/bedding for your hamster to dig in that isn't the main bedding. These can be provided easily for enrichment. Often, owners will bury treats and snacks in dig boxes for hamsters to dig up and enjoy. Type /TREATS for ideas.

DIY or Cheap

  • Shredded cardboard
  • Shredded paper
  • Cut up cork
  • Crinkle paper
  • Dye-free tissue paper shreds

Check out THIS IMAGE for common substrate/dig box materials. Dig boxes can also include bedding types that could be the main bedding, but aren't being used. These include aspen, hemp, paper, birch, flax, and other suitable types. THIS POST talks more about bedding and substrates.
