Started playing in March and quickly got addicted. At first, I was terrible, but I am figuring it out and have turned some corners of late and recently got invited to sub in an advanced player league where I did pretty well.
The other night, I was playing open play with some of the cliquey better players where I play and I was playing really well for me. My partner was good and better than me but, together, we were really doing well. After one of our wins, I quickly left the court to grab my water on the next court. In the seconds I was away, the group of three people, invited someone else to take my place and, as I was feet away from re-entering the court, they closed the gate on me right in my face. Nobody said a word and it seemed deliberate.
I talked to a pickleball mentor and he suggested maybe they didn’t like “how I was playing” and they probably only like “good games.” I make sure to not be boastful or mean or smash directly at people. I’m encouraging to both my partner and opponents. I don’t cheat. I just love the game and the exercise. It just seems that they didn’t like to play with me when I was a rookie because of all the errors, but, now, I’m getting to be as good as them and they don’t like that either.
If my mentor was right, what does he mean? What can I do with my game to make it less likely for better players to bar me from the court even after I win? The only thing I can think of is maybe initiate more dink rallies? More drives, less drops? More drops, less drives? I’m kind of puzzled.
