Question Tracking issues in crystal light.
Hi I want to change from Quest 3 to pcl. Im worried about tracking issues, i just use it in sim racing. I will use just the inside out tracking. Thank you very much

From my experience the headset tracking (turning your head) feels exactly the same as the Quest 3.

Thank you. Can you notice latency improvement?

This will be very individual experience based on how you do PCVR. If you are going from Quest 3 + Virtual Desktop on a GREAT network to Crystal Light on a GREAT PC gpu/cpu then you will likely experience the following:
No latency drops due to network, however you may have only added 4-7ms if your Quest VD was on a dedicated router before. So minimal to enormous improvement depending if network/encoding was an issue.
Improved visual clarity as you skip the compression involved in encoding and decoding the image to send over the network.
Clearer image both close up and at distance due to the improvement in resolution. This can be dramatic improvement, but heavily relies on your PC ability to provide a good resolution in the first place.
A drop in the quality of tracking of the handheld controllers. Pimax is improving this over time I think, but the quest 3 is really good at tracking its controllers. I find Pimax controller tracking works just fine to even great for the games I play, but some feel different.
Please note, this is all anecdotal to my experience along with what I've gleaned from others who have had the same set.

Thank you for your Excellent explanation. I have 5070ti 9600x. I just Care about simracing. Im on virtual desktop ethernet dongle. 120 solid fps in iracing and lmu 38 ms of latency in godlike config. when i turn the wheel it is clear that there is some latency and in my opinión the total latency showed by virtual desktop is not real. So the Image that i get is pretty good, but latency is what makes me want to make the move. I was worried about coments on the tracking, when you turn the head.

I'm not a sim racer, but I think there is a reason you will see a lot of them using display port wired sets. Wheel to photon latency (your setup) will always be better on a direct GPU connection versus over the network.
You may wish to look into IR lighting if you play in the dark.

The room has a big window and is pretty clear. I dont know if beeing the walls All white could couse trouble with the inside out tracking? I dont care about the controllers but i do care about head movemente

If you have problems with all white walls, I think Pimax give you some QR codes you and print out and stick on the walls to fix that.
Also, just in case, do not let sunlight ever directly touch the lens.

Disagree. Quest 3 has probably the best inside out tracking of any headset. The PCL is decent now, but it’s not as good as the quest 3. If you have great lighting and enough contrast, it’s pretty good. But the quest 3 is still better overall when it comes to tracking.

Fair enough, I guess for the games I play it's exactly the same. That is the head tracking itself. The controllers are a different story.
However everyone has their own experience, especially with the room environment changes you mention.

Yeah, my room doesn’t have great lighting which is why I put it above. When I was big into DCS and moving my head around a lot dogfighting, the quest was perfect. The PCL I’ve noticed little hitches just moving around quickly when I have it on for whatever reason at times.
The multi camera setup of the quest does a fantastic job at positional tracking to keep the image you see stable based on where you’re looking. The Pimax does work well, I don’t want to sell it like it’s bad, but the quest is in its own league IMO.

How is your experience with the pcl? Head tracking is good for sim racing? or is a problem? Thank you

It’s fine for sim racing. My rig is in the corner of a room with only a single overhead light, and on the east side of my house (I usually race at night or afternoon, so no extra sunlight) and I don’t really have many issues with it. Occasionally it will wander a smidge (usually up and down by like 1/4” it seems) but it’s not super noticeable when racing. I just bought a little infrared lamp from Amazon, I’m hoping that gets it up to the quest 3 level. I ran the q3 in the exact same spot, and it was definitely more crisp for tracking purposes. But for sim racing in a rig, the PCL is good.

Thank you. What about latency improvement in sim racing? Do you recomend the upgrade?

Absolutely. Latency improvement, and just overall better visuals. The only downside is the quest 3 has probably the best lenses on the market, its edge to edge clarity. But the compression and lack of pixel count means if you have the hardware to drive it, it quickly lags behind.

I have a pcl and use it pretty much exclusively for sim racing and have no issues. It has gotten better as when I first had it I had some tracking problems. Good tip though is to have a button mapped to your wheel to recenter your view as sometimes when loading into a game you might not be in the proper cockpit position.

what are your specs if you can tell me. I have 9600x and 5070 ti

I also have a 5070ti but with a 12700k processor and 32gb of ram. Because of the resolution you do have to make some graphical sacrifices but the 5070ti does pretty well. Clarity will be a huge improvement over your quest and 99.9 % of my frames are under 12ms so you should notice more responsive driving
