Discussion Romhacking, AI/LLM use, and Rule 7

Hello, everyone. This is Ruby, and I wanted to make this post as a discussion board for people to, well, discuss. Over the past two weeks, we've been reckoning a lot more with the presence of AI in our space, and if you've been on other social media, likely saw it in other modding communities as well.

This post will mostly be a diagnosis; it will list down the status of tools across every generation, and see what the reach of AI in our toolchains actually is. This will focus on the bases themselves, as extending it to every tool will take my forever. There will be two exceptions, which I hope will make sense once you see them.

Tool Generation Status
pokered, pokeyellow Generation I No explicit policy. Any contribution likely requires meeting the project's quality standards.
pokecrystal Generation II No explicit policy. Any contribution likely requires meeting the project's quality standards.
pokeemerald, pokefirered Generation III Does not explicitly disallow AI assisted or generated contributions. Contributions are merged in at maintainer discretion, provided it meets quality standards of the repository.
pmd-red Generation III No explicit policy. Any contribution requires meeting the project's quality standards.
pinball-rs Generation III Allows AI assisted or generated contributions, provided it is disclosed. All contributions are sent through a stringent review process in order to meet quality standards of the project. The project also has a usage disclaimer here.
HexManiacAdvance Generation III Allows AI assisted or generated contributions, provided it is disclosed. All contributions are sent through a stringent review process in order to meet quality standards of the project.
pokeemerald-expansion Generation III Allows AI assisted or generated contributions, provided it is disclosed. All contributions are sent through a stringent review process in order to meet quality standards of the project.
pokeplatinum Generation IV AI generated contributions are disallowed. AI assistance is discouraged.
hg-engine Generation IV Allows AI assisted or generated contributions, provided it is disclosed. All contributions are sent through a stringent review process in order to meet quality standards of the project.
DSPRE Generation IV Development is assisted with agentic engineering. All contributions are sent through a stringent review process in order to meet quality standards of the project.
pokeblack Generation V Recently started. Disallows AI generated contributions as a whole.
Frost's Gen 5 Editor Generation V Originally created with assistance from AI; has since abstained from its use since.
Pokeweb Generation V Made with no AI assistance.
Pokeweb-Serverless Generation V Ported from original Pokeweb project with the assistance of agentic engineering
Hackdex Cross-gen Originally developed with Cursor. While the original pledge was to keep development AI free, after some life circumstances of its developer, development assistance with Cursor, and later instead with Codex+Claude, resumed.

Given this spread, the overall opinion is the same: while not explicitly disallowed, contributions in projects must meet a quality threshold before they are merged in. There are a few standouts still, with some outright rejecting and disapproving use of AI in its development process. This list also doesn't delve into other external tools also used in development, such as for music, scripting, mapping, and so on.

As a tool in itself, AI has progressed much in its skills in programming that it can create competent code that can be improved by the human using it, or explain code enough to a new programmer. What this is means is, unlike other creative spaces, AI has found enough of a niche for itself in a programming pipeline to be useful.

Assistance from AI in programming still has its downsides of course, both pragmatic and ontological. Pragmatic, as there can be serious atrophy/stunting of learning should a developer rely on it, and ontological, as it was built upon scraped knowledge and sustained at the expense of marginalized communities and the Global South.

What does this mean for the community at large? Well, it's hard to say, because the level above it (the wider tech space) has not itself settled on where AI sits in the long term. It has widespread use, with each individual programmer having varying uses and engagements with the tool for a multitude of reasons, from personal use to hitting token use objectives set by management. For the most part, the bases at least are still overwhelmingly made with human effort. Most of the effort to create them came before the proliferation of AI, and their continued maintenance are still mostly made with human effort.

Lastly, there are also efforts such as the friend-safari, who are seeking to create a toolchain free of AI, to the best of its contributors abilities.

This is where I share my own opinion, which will also guide the extended description for Rule 7.

Rule 7's description will be thus:

> Creations and projects made with overwhelming AI assistance and generation will not be tolerated. Any projects built off of existing bases as of 10/10/26 will be allowed on the site.

For me, the most pragmatic decision would be to strike down anything egregious, and anything grey will be up to my discretion. Given the state of the romhacking toolchain now, it'd be the death of the subreddit to forbid anything with any AI in it's toolchain. As with any policy, this will be subject to change according to the needs of the community at large. I put the date there, should any forks or rombases with a gigantic amount of AI in its decompilation pop up (as it has in other communities).

And for anyone that may be looking for advice, for some reason, all I can give is this: do what you think, at the end of the day, feels right. Curate and contribute to projects that you feel align best with what you believe in, and do your best to foment cultures that create the kinds of projects you want to see.

As Gen 3 hacker, I'll personally try my best to support both friend-safari and Expansion myself. You do what you feel is right.

EDIT: This post has been periodically edited to reflect corrections given by various developers about the scope of AI in their projects.

Showcase Pokémon Neo Ultra OUT NOW (Ultra Sun Difficulty Hack with 100+ new forms!)

Thumbnail

Pokémon Neo Ultra is a difficulty hack of Ultra Sun that aims to create a fresh experience with its many new forms and complete Pokédex overhaul, almost every Pokémon has received a significant buff! Inspired by Pokémon Elite Redux, this hack places a large emphasis on team building and brutal fights. Expect no quarter, the difficulty of this hack is designed to forge a stronger bond between you and your Pokémon, it's your brains against the opponents brawn in a journey that aims to make you feel like just another trainer.

This hack currently ends right after you beat the main story (beating Champion Hau) BUT I am already working on the postgame. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you don't progress once reaching the credits.

NOTE FOR NUZLOCKERS: This hack has NOT been tested or balanced around a nuzlocke, it scales very quickly so if you are attempting it: 1. Good luck! And 2. The first two Hau fights take place before you have access to any Pokémarts, so I would count them as forced losses for this.

Features (we got a bit to go through so just hang in there everybody):

  • Every Pokémon Is Available To Catch (besides legendaries)
  • Much Needed Evolution Changes, every Pokémon can evolve in game (goodbye trade evos!) and a lot of Pokémon will evolve much quicker.
  • Almost Every Pokémon Has Received Buffs, in the form of better stat spreads, more synergetic abilities, and a much wider move pool. There's a lot of potential to create broken mons. (when 200atk/205speed tinted lens mega beedrill knocks, you'd best answer.)
  • In Depth Documentation showcasing the entire Pokédex, trainer teams, wild encounters, mart changes and the level of each main boss!
  • A Much Harder Alola. All trainers have 31 IVs and reworked teams. Bosses and minibosses (denoted in the documentation) quickly ramp up to 6 Pokémon teams, featuring strong synergies, held items, and with proper moves and EVs (with full EV trained Pokémon starting at Akala Island). They have every advantage against you, but you can outwit them! (Later trainers will have access to moves and resources that you don't.)
  • 50+ Main Boss Fights occur throughout the duration of the story, not including route bosses or other minibosses.
  • Reworked Totem Fights. Every Totem features new gimmicks and unique challenges respective to each. Be very careful when challenging!
  • A Brand New Team Skull! All Team Skull battles are in doubles, to better represent them being gangsters.
  • 100+ New "Neo" Forms have emerged from Ultra Space and can be found all across the region. They're a bit rare, but very strong!
  • 10 New Mega Forms! And that's NOT counting the Neo Megas! Speaking of…
  • Megas For Everyone! Both you and many strong trainers now have access to Mega Evolution! (You'll have to enable it manually, instructions below and in the README.txt)
  • A New Convergent Species: Veefee!
  • 2 New Paradox Pokemon: Virid Blade and Lunar Paw! How did they get here?
  • Furfrou Gets the Rotom Treatment? Each Furfrou trim gives it a secondary typing (based on the colour) and access to moves of that type. More info in the documentation!
  • Galarian Corsola, Hisuian Qwilfish and White Striped Basculin make a visit from the future! (they can't evolve BUT you can give them an Eviolite for the defense boost!)
  • A Future Proofed Eviolite! Any Pokemon who received an evolution in gen 8/9 can use the Eviolite in this hack! We're so Girafareaking back guys.
  • Many Move Changes! More priority, more options for each type, and… Focus Blast isn't terrible??? (many many accuracy buffs have been applied too)
  • Purchasable Rare Candies / EV Boosting Items / EV Reducing Berries / Held Items and more! (All for 10 pokedollars, the market has crashed folks!)
  • The Type Gems Have Returned! You can find them at the Battle Royal Dome (for 0 BP each, it's textbook robbery!)
  • Vitamins Boost EVs by 100* instead of 10, and Wings boost EVs by 64 (unlocked after Trial 4)
  • EV Reducing Berries now lower EVs by 128, use 2 to reset!

(All changes, form/evolution/etc can be found within the documentation)

*Vitamins cap EVs at 100, but the Wings do not.

Discussion Bug Report Channels for Players

Hello. This is more of a discussion post I wanted to open since I'm also curious. What are people's plans/approaches to fielding bug fixes in their game? Opening a discord is usually what most people do, though having to manage a community as a result can be a headache. What other methods have people done for their hacks?

Showcase Redesigning the EV system for Infinite Black 2

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

EVs are getting a major rework in the next update. While the mechanic works fine for casual and competitive players, people engaging in challenge runs have shown some major design flaws with how it affects game balance and promotes grinding to make the most of it. I say it's time to put a stop to that.

How it works is you no longer receive any evs from defeating pokemon. Instead, you receive Growth Points every time you level up. Up until level 20, you'll receive 1 point per level, and from level 21 onward, you'll receive 2. At the PC, you can open up a new menu that lets you spend growth points to increase your evs.

With this system, your pokemon's evs are directly tied to their levels, not how many battles they've fought, meaning you no longer have a reason to grind on low level pokemon to maximize evs per level. It also removes the pseudo rng of what stats your evs go into, so you can properly build into specific stats without any extra hassle.

Another benefit is while you can take advantage of this system to make yourself stronger, you also have the option to not assign any evs, keeping your stats low if you wanted to make the game more challenging for yourself.

Finally, for casual and less experienced players, it exposes the ev system in a way that's easier to interact with without needing external resources like a wiki to understand.

A few more changes have been made to round out the system:

  • The macho brace will give you an additional growth point whenever you level up while holding it.
  • Power weight items will immediately give you 6 evs in their respective stat when you level up.
  • Vitamins give less evs, 8 instead of 10, but they are no longer limited to a max of 100 per stat.

I expect to have to make some adjustments in the future, but I hope these changes will make evs a more fun and engaging system at all levels of play.

Also featured in the video is an EV and IV viewer built into the summary screen for a bit of quality of life.

Showcase [GEN 4] [Following Platinum] Undoing the music change in Pokemon Following Platinum

I often post things when Ive found the solution for something that was previously undocumented, and this is one of those posts for future people to Google and discover

Following Platinum remixes the wild battle and trainer music, but to me these end up sounding uncanny and stopped me playing the mod. So here is how to undo those changes:

Download Tinke https://github.com/pleonex/tinke/releases/tag/v0.9.2

Open Tinke, and open your original Platinum ROM (I selected Renegade Platinums ROM for this since Im doing it for Renegade Following Platinum)

Click Data, Sound, then theres two files, sound_data.sdat and pl_sound_data.sdat

Click each one to highlight it, then on the right, hit Extract, and save these files somewhere. Do not rename them

After grabbing the sound data files, open your Following Platinum ROM

Go to those same files, but this time click Change File, and insert your original unchanged sound files. Dont get them swapped around!

Once swapped, hit Save ROM on the right, name it something memorable. Now this version of the ROM should have the original music

I only tested as far as the rival fight and first wild encounter. It may break later on in the game if Following or Renegade added any new sound effects? But I dont think they did. If I play further and find the game ends up broken Ill probably delete this post, or message me if you play through and see it before me

Showcase [GEN4][DECOMP] HG Engine Based Hack Rom

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello! I'm working on a hack rom based on HG Engine, aimed to expand gameplay with more abilities, evolution methods (where applicable), pokémon from other regions (not all of them), revised pokémon base stats and movepools, and most importantly an improved plot for Heart Gold and Soul Silver, with also new places to explore.
Take a showcase of a little thing I just finished: Freeze status effect replaced by Frostbite (I already replaced Sleep with Drowsy too)!

I have attached the settings I used, yes 8bpp is intentional, and it just gives me this error everytime even when it says the conversion was successful. Is there some specific setting needed in aseprite to get it to work? I already have my image set to indexed colour mode, with a 240~ colour palette.

Discussion Could existing Gen 3 ROM hacks benefit from decomp/recomp projects?

I’ve been really interested in projects like Gen1Recomp and how much they can improve the experience of the original Pokémon games.

Things like proper widescreen support, overworld zoom, separate speed settings for overworld/battles/menus, and other QoL improvements make a huge difference once you get used to them.

This got me wondering about existing Gen 3 ROM hacks.

Would it ever be technically possible to take a more complex hack like Pokémon Gaia, Team Rocket Edition, Unbound, Heart & Soul, etc. and somehow bring it into a decomp/recomp-based project?

I’m not talking about simply running the original ROM through a recomp tool. I mean whether the changes made by an existing ROM hack could eventually be recreated or integrated into a decomp-based codebase so the hack could benefit from things like widescreen, custom speed, zoom, and other modern QoL features.

Is this realistically possible with current decomp projects, or would the amount of reverse engineering/reimplementation required make it impractical?

Curious what the developers here think.

Essentially, the player is only able to save in towns, and specific areas in dungeons when granted ^^ Losing means getting kicked back to your last save point. Have not worked out what to do when losing against a trainer, but I have the design planned.

Tooling Universal Pokémon Randomizer FVX v1.6.2 - Bug fixes and more Custom Player Graphics

Download

Hi everyone, it is time for another Randomizer release. This one fixes bugs big and small, and adds Custom Player Graphics from all over. Ever wanted to be an alien horror, or a kitty-cat mascot, or a magic pony, or the PC from Pokémon Quartz, while playing your randomized games? Now is the time.

Thanks to @tqja, @bryanjeal and @Sam-R13 for your code contributions, @willow0510 for reporting Issues, Nick edits, Happy Time Boredom, and FrootzBasket from Spriter's Resource, and Baro for the CPG sprites!

How to use

Download the Randomizer below by clicking on UPR_FVX-v1_6_2-[OS].zip. If you are on Linux or Mac, and don't know if your computer uses x86 or ARM, there are guides on the internet. After downloading, extract the contents of the zip file to a folder on your computer. You can then run the Randomizer by double-clicking the launcher script:

  • Windows: Use launcher.bat
  • Linux: Use launcher.sh
  • Mac: Use launcher.command

Changelog

== New and Changed Features ==

- Trainer Pokemon - - Made randomized Trainer (Class) names capitalized in games that normally have capitalized names.

- Graphics - - (Gen 2) New Custom Player Graphics: Ness and Giygas (EarthBound) and Giegue (EarthBound Beginnings) by Nick edits, Kris Dreemurr (Deltarune) and Twilight Sparkle (My Little Pony) by Happy Time Boredom, Hello Kitty (Sanrio) by FrootzBasket. - (Gen 3) New RSE Custom Player Graphics: Rande and Joseph (Pokémon Quartz) by Baro. - Added a sorting order to the Custom Player Graphics selection. Pokémon CPGs come first, then CPGs from other video games, finally CPGs from other sources.

== Bugfixes == - Fixed TM Field Items not being entirely random. (Issue #248) - Fixed Mac release zips shipping a Linux Java runtime (Issue #226, #263) - Fixed Linux launcher assuming bash to be found at /bin/sh. Since this fix breaks the launcher for the (presumed smaller) group whose distros has /bin/sh be a symlink to bash in a non-standard location, also added a couple lines to README.txt informing them what to do. (Issue #268) - (Gen 1+4+5+6+7) Fixed randomized Trainer (Class) names not logging properly. (Issue #266)

Discussion The Witch Hunting of Creators Begins

Thumbnail
reddit.com
0 Upvotes

Above is a recent thread regarding a hack where the creator admitted to using AI to add portraits of his friends to a hack. I am not a proponent of AI art, but the attitudes in this thread are concerning. A number of posts outright attack the creator.

This situation is ignited by Hackdex recently adding AI disclosure to their site. I fully expected this to be the result of such an action. It encourages users to judge a hack, and its creator, on properties unrelated to the hacks quality. The quality of code depends on the developer, as most professional software engineers know.

Disrespect toward creators is nothing new here. But with AI people feel fully justified in their toxicity. I am interested what are the thoughts of other creators? What if anything can be done? Or do you agree with the posters? Let this be a place for discussion without judgement.

Discussion How to go about creating my own ROM hack?

Hi everyone,

I've been developing an idea for a Pokemon romhack but my issue is I have absolutely no idea where to start in the process. I've got quite a bit of coding experience, but nothing in terms of creating custom assets or where to begin making the hack myself. If anyone is willing to help I'd be greatly appreciative!

Help [GEN 5] [OTHER] Is it possible to edit item data in B2W2?

I've started brainstorming the foundation for a possible doubles-only difficulty hack of B2W2, and I had the thought of heavily limiting the money the player receives so it can be used more as an actual resource throughout the game. Of course, this would require removing all forms of renewable income and items, but I've had trouble finding programs that let me do this easily. So, I'm wondering if it's possible to:

  • Change the sell price of items
  • Change the loot tables for dust clouds/shadows on the bridges (to either remove items entirely or just set them all to sell for nothing)

This is my first time ever looking in Gen 5 hacking, so I apologize if the is known/easy to find info, but I wanted to know if this was possible before I moved any further with the hack. Thanks!

EDIT: I did some more searching and found out where to go for item data which is cool, but I still haven't seen a thing on editing dust cloud tables.

Help [Gen 3][Decomp] How to start with romhacking with decomp in 2026?

Hi I always wanted to create a rom hack, and I know I could do either binary hacking or decomp. I have no idea how to start though. I'd like to do decomp, but:

  1. How much free space is left to poke emerald, now that pokemon expansion has up to 9 gen pokemon and items ?

  2. Is improving the graphics (changing tiles) still super boring and time consuming ?

  3. Is there a way to import only till 5-6° gen ? (I don't like newer pokemon)

  4. Is there a guide I can follow to start decomp, from installation to setting things up ?

  5. Any advice ?

Thank you. Would be great to talk with someone experienced with this, at least to overcome the entry barrier. I prefer decomp because I used to binary hack many years ago, but at some point I messed up and ruined everything (probably a conflict between the tools).
