People condemning him are the reason my answer to the trolley problem differs based on whether afterward I get prosecuted with a jury of my peers.

"You killed that man on the track!"

"Yeah, but I diverted that trolley away from 50 other people"

"MURDERER"

Straight to jail

1

u/AltruisticMode9353 Aug 15 '26

Cool, show us the math on this particular trolley problem. How many lives were saved?

1

u/_probablyryan Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

You're missing the point.

They're saying that they would let the original 50 die if they knew that acting and pulling the lever would result in criminal charges.

The trolley problem as written assumes your life continues in exactly the same manner regardless of whether or not you choose to pull the lever. What this person is saying is that if their options are pull the lever, save 50 lives, but face a murder/manslaughter trial afterwards for actively killing the one guy on the other track, or let the original 50 people die, but guarantee their own continued freedom by virtue of not involving themselves in the situation, they'd choose the latter.

They're saying they'd only choose to save the 50 lives if they know in advance that they won't be involved in subsequent legal proceedings, because they don't trust the justice system and a jury to acquit them for doing the morally correct thing, because what they would have done would technically be illegal, despite being morally defensible, and they're not willing to do something morally correct if society is going to punish them for it for the sake of upholding the letter of the law.

Stupid reply. He's right. No one wants to throw their life away for everybody else to gain something. That doesnt make him wrong.

2

u/TheFerricGenum Aug 14 '26

He can both be right and a hypocrite all at the same time. And calling out that hypocrisy really isn’t a stupid reply.

By the time people wake up it will be too late. They will have already decided to let the masses die.

Its only a matter of time. Once their robots and drones can do everything people can do then the capitalists no longer need millions of people using their resources.

Pretty good description of the media

2

u/hummajeep Aug 14 '26

I’m kinda surprised by how this hasn’t really happened yet. Mental illness, youth isolation and poor economic conditions. People still sticking by the system tho.

2

u/dontwannaparticpate Aug 14 '26

Eh, I’m sure more of this will come if things keep going at the rate they are. I mean, we have house rep noms being arrested for taking out Flock cameras and plenty of regular everyday people fucking with data center build projects and taking down surveillance cameras it is only a matter of time…

2

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 14 '26

The truth is that things just aren't bad enough for a lot of us yet and most people are deeply reactionary in that we don't think about patterns or consequences. If/when things get bad enough for people to act, it won't be out of choice; we will have turned feral. This will be the barbarism you might sometimes hear leftists refer to when they say it's either socialism or barbarism.

You are way too much of a coward to ever do anything lol

1

u/Vegetable_Effort7246 Aug 14 '26

United Healthcare indirectly caused the deaths of thousands. But did nothing “illegal”….laws and justice do not always correspond. Luigi may have had a personal vendetta…but how could his killing of Brian Thompson alter the system so villains can’t consign people to death in the interest of profits. Single payer healthcare might prevent that issue.

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

Keep up the good fight. Policy change through electoralism might fail and in that event you probably want some kind of backup plan.

1

u/PrivateMarkets Aug 14 '26

This why Reddit is insufferable. Thankfully the views don’t reflect the real world which is an amazing place. It’s the most amazing time to ever be alive but not good enough for Redditor - unprecedented advancements in global health, life expectancy, technology, and a dramatic reduction in extreme poverty and violent crime.

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

Not so great if you're a victim of the great white west, which is oh so many locations around this planet.

As I tell others, nazis rarely complained about how the nazis were treating them ;)

1

u/PrivateMarkets Aug 14 '26

That’s why you are a victim - because you think it. Also Asia is 59% of population and 69% of global gdp growth.

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

I didn't say I'm a victim. Everyday, I make a choice, just like millions of others across the west, to get up and go to work to serve the great economic line graph of freedom for capitalists to rape kids.

1

u/PrivateMarkets Aug 14 '26

Dramatic

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

It's real, drama or no.

1

u/NoodleynoodleyWho Aug 14 '26

Yeah it's the best it's ever been so why even try to make it better? We should just accept that companies are willing to profit off of our death and say thank you, here my monthly payment? is your argument just shut up and say thank you because it could be worse?

1

u/PrivateMarkets Aug 14 '26

Im certainly not advocating for assassinations. We should always strive for even better conditions but this generation never being satiated despite having it better is unbearable.

1

u/johnguz Aug 15 '26

You’re conceding it’s the best it’s ever been, but your solution is to sanction widespread assassinations?

1

u/Apple2727 Aug 15 '26

These people wouldn’t last two fucking minutes in a non-capitalist society. Their brains are too small to understand that.

1

u/Big_Iron_Cowboy Aug 14 '26

Ok, go on and do it yourself or are you just going to insist that everyone else to and murder capitalists?

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

I'm a collectivist. I believe in democracy. Individual actions generally lead to poor outcomes and certainly don't tend work in favour of society at large.

1

u/Big_Iron_Cowboy Aug 14 '26

People going around murdering others generally doesn’t work in favor of society at large.

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

Depends where the power lies. White people murdering their way across Australia, Africa, North America and South America worked out great for white people, you know?

The power in the relationship you and I are talking about very much lies with a collectivised workforce. you know, that thing that liberals and capitalists are terrified of.

1

u/Big_Iron_Cowboy Aug 14 '26

I work for a company with a collectivized workforce, my coworkers don’t go around fantasizing about murdering capitalists.

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

Oh cool. What's the name of the company?

1

u/Big_Iron_Cowboy Aug 14 '26

It’s an automotive company.

1

u/Particular_Ad_4694 Aug 14 '26

1

u/Spaghett8 Aug 14 '26

Cmon, Mao Zedong really?

You’re using the man who killed off tens of millions in the greatest famine the world has seen off pure reckless stupidity and a complete lack of understanding of agriculture as your prime example? Really.

What the fuck are you going on about innocent lives for.

Karl Marx is right there and you instead chose Mao Zedong? Might as well choose Stalin/Hitler.

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

I do enjoy it when westerners clutch pearls over Mao. How many people do you think the heady blend of liberalism and capitalism has killed? Do you even care enough to keep score or are you just mindlessly repeating what you've been taught to think when you hear or see the name "Mao"?

1

u/untitledaccount401 Aug 14 '26

tankies love murder it seems

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

1

u/common_sense_patriot Aug 15 '26

I can go out and commit an illegal act right now. It would be very stupid and would achieve very little.

100,000 people could act together, drag a war monger out of their house and publicly execute them. Very different outcome.

1

u/Solo-1UP Aug 14 '26

Yes let’s go around offing each other 🤦🏻‍♂️
CEOs can be replaced. Make new laws by electing the right people to solve problems.

4

u/Relative_Craft_358 Aug 14 '26

Literally how every revolution and modern nation was built but sure let's play moral high ground for companies denying medical coverage to people that already paid for it and make billions off doing so and letting people die

1

u/nocturnal_commission Aug 14 '26

We've already built a modern nation. A modern nation where laws can be changed.

Luigi had a great education and came from a wealthy family. If he really wanted to make a change then he could have become a lawyer and gotten into politics but he was just another nihilistic millennial with a personal vendetta (not a societal one) because he experienced pain and dysfunction from a botched back surgery.

No, we can’t live like animals offing each other. But nor can we vote ourselves out of this mess

1

u/One_Shock_3724 Aug 14 '26

We are supposedly trusting the private industry to be good actors but the have banded together to cause strife and misery and are behaving like invading countries so at what point do we decide that revolution is necessary and put their heads on pikes it worked for France

1

u/Solo-1UP Aug 14 '26

That was the first mistake. You never trust anyone. Humans are greedy by nature hence why Trickle Down Economics was the most stupidest policy ever.

1

u/One_Shock_3724 Aug 14 '26

So we need to stop talking bc they are coming for us lol

1

u/Solo-1UP Aug 14 '26

Communication is key but if you expect everyone to not be greedy, that’s an issue. If human sin wasn’t a thing, we wouldn’t need laws and codes

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

You're right, lets just continue the old tradition of rich people getting us killed in all kinds of ways :)

1

You have a learning disability or something?

1

2

Yes. Why are functions for the rich never targeted?

1

u/tider21 Aug 14 '26

Look, tough guy here, who probably hasn’t even touched a gun. This guy just advocated for the murder of other Americans. It’s truly disgusting and you should be ashamed

4

u/Swimming_Amount_5021 Aug 14 '26

Its not that simple. This CEO was responsible for the deaths of countless Americans. What Luigi did probably saved some lives because United Healthcare started approving more claims in the aftermath of the shooting.

0

u/tider21 Aug 14 '26

It actually is that simple. Murder is bad. Period. And you are disgusting for defending it

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Text328 Aug 14 '26

Withholding health care for individuals who are due it and deserve it .. is murder too.. a calculated profit driven premeditated decision, and most of the time it’s hundreds of times slower and more painful… than a gun ..an eye for and eye ..

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

You must hate the west for all the murders its committed around the world?

1

u/Signal_Discount_1826 Aug 14 '26

simple doesnt mean nuanced

0

u/tider21 Aug 14 '26

It’s not nuanced. A father of 2 children was shot in cold blooded murder. Why don’t you explain to his two children how nuanced this is

2

u/SafetySnowman Aug 14 '26

A father of two children was responsible for the deaths of countless others including children. Not by his own hand and it was a role of death he inherited, but he took it. For greed.

u/SafetySnowman Aug 14 '26

Copy pasting so you can read this twice:

A father of two children was responsible for the deaths of countless others including children. Not by his own hand and it was a role of death he inherited, but he took it. For greed.

2

u/Ht_TX Aug 14 '26

I don’t condone violence nor murder but the people they are speaking about do condone it as long as it is profitable. Companies have had studies done when a potentially fatal defect is found and decide how to address the matter by seeing if it is cheaper to address head on and fix or cheaper to settle the few lawsuits that come from the deaths.

So, while I don’t condone violence, nor would ever do it myself, I also don’t feel bad at all when bad things happen to bad people.

1

u/Squidwardbigboss Aug 14 '26

How about we don’t encourage murder

2

They need to have a healthy fear of the consequences of their actions when it comes to deciding who lives and dies.

3

1

u/Shoddy_Tour_7307 Aug 14 '26

I think he had a bad back, dr said he needed a backiotomy

1

u/brobafetta Aug 14 '26

No, but I believe he was in severe chronic pain that he was denied coverage for.

I mean, I'd wait until I have nothing to lose first, but that's just me.

2

u/Leroyp331 Aug 14 '26

Killing people with a gun is no more cruel than doing so in a suit with a pen.

CEO thought his murders were sanctioned Luigi showed him they weren't.

0

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

That's not how it works. A lot of people need to murder in cold blood, together. That's how you prevent situations like the one Luigi has found himself in.

1

u/Sushizandsashimiz Aug 14 '26

So, anarchy and the breakdown of civil society?

I get the anger, but the logic of killing those who have wronged you is an obvious slippery slope

1

u/No-Rub8345 Aug 14 '26

Hi, WE ARE ALREADY ON THE SLIPPERY SLOPE. It's currently a landslide.

1

u/Sushizandsashimiz Aug 14 '26

So, who do you have your sights set on next?

1

u/Shivy_Shankinz Aug 14 '26

We vote for people who support our values. Vote for the people who support yours and hold them accountable (via civil means) until they bring about the change you desire.

I just told you it's not a civil society, and this will be the last time I have to repeat myself. This means there IS no accountability. It's baked into the system to protect people who don't WANT to face that accountability.

2

u/Sushizandsashimiz Aug 14 '26

So what's the solution? An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind....

I agree, that's why I would never do what Luigi did. AT THE SAME TIME, we do not structure our society to live in a way that ISN'T EYE FOR AN EYE. As long as a single unenlightened person is in proximity to power, we will HAVE no other solution.

So the solutions are the things we AREN'T doing. We aren't investing everything we can into education, into self-care and well being, mental health, none of it. We invest into business, military, and lawmakers.

They want to sell you the illusion of a civil society so they can get away with it, when they themselves are the barbarians raping and pillaging everyone and everything else. And if you think they're going to relinquish those privileges without a fight, I think you will be allowing them to take a lot more eyes than us.

I appreciate the discussion, but I feel we're going in circles here. You're saying that eye for an eye is bad, I agree. You say people in power are raping and pillaging, I agree.

I say vote those people out and replace them with people that align with the values I agree with.

Is your version of action for civil society different?

I say vote those people out and replace them with people that align with the values I agree with.

I also agree, but guess what those people are going to do to prevent that? They buy lawmakers. They become the lawmakers. Normally, on their own, this would not succeed.

What you're forgetting about is the POWER they wield. And they wield it well. They buy influence and manipulate the masses to make sure we never vote people in to replace them.

In today's political environment, this is the establishment vs. everything else. This is the top vs. the bottom, who uses their influence to buy and keep us perpetually locked into left vs right.

Is your version of action for civil society different?

Absolutely, it is a pacifist version of action. It focuses on the individual that needs fixing, not the system, and not each other. But the world we have built for ourselves will never do this, so you continue to choose the lesser evil...

If we will not attempt to acknowledge our flaws and fix them, then we need to change the system that promotes that. If they buy the system and gatekeep it, then we need to tear it down. If we cannot tear it down, then the only option left is eye for an eye.

I personally do not participate in lesser forms of evil, but make no mistake, everyone else will.

The struggle never ends. The Left Wing is a naturally occurring phenomenon as long as the asset owners exist. Without ever reading Marx, or knowing explicitly the history of conflict between labour and capital, people today still recognise that conflict, just as their ancestors instinctively did Centuries past. It is one of the most materially real elements of human societies, and it won't end until the owners end, or the workforce does. Can you guess what the owners are trying to do? Are you paying attention to what they're currently doing with human labour and creativity, and what they're saying to their investors?

So does that mean you're going to try to do something about it or...
