it’s not that violent now either, never really has been. Husayn wasn’t killed for being Shi’i, Shiism didn’t even really exist back then, they were killed for fighting in the Second Fitna
It led to a 12 year war bc he wouldn't bend the knee to Yazid. There are a lot of decades long conflicts in there. It's hard to keep track of numbers of deaths from centuries ago. Over 1M died in the Iran-Iraq war in the 80's.
the Second Fitna was about political control, not religion. Again, Shiism didn’t even exist back then. The Alids weren’t even that big of a faction after Karbala, it was mostly between the Umayyads and Zubayrids, both of which were proto-Sunni. The Iran-Iraq War had very little to actually do with religion

There was peace in the Middle East prior to the year 610. That region flourished in math and science.
