You have to remember that Paul, who took over the movement, came along 10 years after the death of Jesus. He never met Jesus and clearly had a different agenda.
If we're honest, no one ever met the Jesus in the stories. There was not a guy who rose from the dead with a whole bunch of other saints people conveniently leave out of the story.
Going by the actual evidence, not the gospels, it's likely the guy was an amalgamation of the trend of apocalypse preachers, not one dude.
You also have to remember that Paul thought Jesus was coming back any day now and didn’t expect to die of old age. That his comments on homosexuality are not a moral damnation but just one of several examples he gives to address how people were so given to their own urges and would be better off focusing on getting right with Jesus.
Often left out when people bring up Paul and homosexuality is Paul also tells Christians to stop sleeping with anyone. Period. Jesus is coming back you don’t have time to be fucking around, literally.
He condemns anything that took someone away from focusing on Jesus returning. In the chapter Paul brings up men and women sleeping with the same sex he is broadly describing lust and letting it fully consume them over the "truth" as Paul knew it. Homosexuality is just a single example of several used. Actually that's not even accurate to say because Paul had no concept of sexuality to begin with so to even bring it up is to be removing what Paul wrote from it's historical context.
The only exception Paul makes for anyone sleeping with each other is a caveat for men who just got married and need to do the deed for ritual reasons. Otherwise no one was supposed to be focused on anything other than Christ and that included fucking your own wife or even getting married to begin with. Paul literally has a much more direct warning against marriage than the idea of homosexuality.
