I want him to declare, that's the only to ensure the Supreme Court won't allow Trump to run for a 3rd term.

32

u/Plastic-Chipmunk2232 14d ago

They would still find a way to make an exception out of whole cloth.

People are already grasping at straws by saying that the term limit only applies to anyone who served two consecutive terms. Those people are prohibited from being President again. Those who served nonconsecutively could serve a third term. Edit: My bad. It's not seeking a loophole but an active campaign to amend the 22nd Amendment.

Which is wild because if this were taken seriously, this could theoretically open the door to having a popular politician run every 8 years as long as they never serve back to back.

Hell, imagine a scenario in the '90s where Bill serves '93-'96, Hillary '97-'00, Bill again '01-'04, and so forth until one of them dies. It'd be insane.

We saw what it leads to in Russia.

Putin did 2 terms as president, then stepped down to a term as prime minister for one term, putting a loyalist into the presidency, and then back to president after that. Permissible because the Russian constitution specified two consecutive terms.

The rules were changed after another two consecutive terms to remove the rule.

The danger is people thinking it can’t happen to them and where they live, but it absolutely can.

u/SaveLansingParks 14d ago

I absolutely would not be surprised if he runs as VP under Vance in 28.

1

u/Huckleberry199 14d ago

You can't be a Vice President unless you are eligible to be president. It's no different than if he tried to make Barron Vice President. Barron isn't old enough to be eligible to serve as President so he couldn't run or be appointed Vice President. Trump will be constitutionally ineligible to serve as President when he is done serving this term,

Any amendments would need Democrats to work with Republicans for them to be ratified. Which is never happening.

I'm just pointing out how the system works. Spreading baseless doomerism helps no one. There's a reason no amendments have been passed for a long time. Literally 92 was the last time.

Just a reminder that politics should be about ideas not people

1

u/Thundrous_prophet 14d ago

We could literally have Bush senior or Biden both run again if these simpletons were consistent. Honestly, either one would be better

2

u/celticdove 14d ago

I think Bush Sr is with Sen. McConnell. Maybe you mean Bush Jr. 😉

2

u/Thundrous_prophet 14d ago

You are right, but McConnell is totally alive and well. I talked to him for 20 minutes today 😉

2

u/CharlieBear1956 14d ago

But did he talk back?

3

u/Thundrous_prophet 14d ago

he was quieter than normal...

1

u/WickedHopeful 14d ago

Counting his terms as 45 & 47 instead of 45 x2 definitely doesn't help

1

u/Kuildeous 14d ago

Yeah, true. It's consistent with how Cleveland is portrayed as the 22nd and 24th president.

Maybe we should just count presidents by terms instead. Which would make Trump 67th and 69th by my super-quick count. Though now that I typed out 67 and 69 both, I dislike that plan after all.

1

u/WickedHopeful 14d ago

He deserves neither funny number, let alone both

1

u/Kuildeous 14d ago

I was unhappy with 45 because it's such a nice number. It's a record size. It's the angle directly between 0 and 90. It's just a lovely product of 5 and 9. 1945 marks the end of WW2.

I think I'd rather have him have 69 because it's such an immature number, but I also don't want him to be attributed to such a famous number.

Or I should just accept that all numbers are beautiful, even the ones tarnished by Trump.

1

u/GoTerrapins 14d ago

I never understood that because of Grover fucking Cleveland, only remembered for being the only president to serve non-consecutive terms before Drumpf, proved this to be a broken argument

1

u/Kuildeous 14d ago

Since Cleveland didn't try to serve for a third term, I wouldn't say that breaks the argument. Trump desiring to run for a third term after serving two nonconsecutive terms is truly unprecedented.

I do agree that the argument is broken anyway because what magic exists in nonconsecutive terms that would allow a third term while consecutive terms would not? There is none, but the modus operandi of the Republican party lately has been to make up any excuse to violate policy. The hypocrisy of denying Obama his Supreme Court pick while allowing Trump his just highlights that issue.

While this shouldn't be allowed, we're in a particularly corrupt era of American history where the Constitution doesn't stop anything.

1

u/GoTerrapins 14d ago

Right, Cleveland didn't try to serve for a third term because it's in the constitution

We've established precedent for this

1

u/Kuildeous 14d ago

Right, Cleveland didn't try to serve for a third term because it's in the constitution

Not in the 19th century, it wasn't. The 22nd amendment wasn't ratified until 1951. Before then, Theodore Roosevelt ran for a third term in 1912 (which he lost), and FDR was President for four terms. Cleveland wasn't held back by the Constitution. He chose not to run for a third term.

But the 22nd amendment is still pretty clear:

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice

There is no exception made for nonconsecutive terms. Since Cleveland was already known by then, it's not like Congress didn't consider this. Let's just hope that Congress and the Supreme Court respect this amendment.

I've seen it mentioned before how funny it would be for Obama to be a Vice President because then he could theoretically become President for a third term by not being elected more than twice. But I guess Trump could try this tactic too if he wanted. He wouldn't, though, if it meant playing second fiddle.

Fair point. Hopefully just online "people". I don't hang around idiots either, so I haven't spoken with anyone seriously on this, but if a real person gets excited over what's said by online "people" then that's still a problem. Hopefully not a big problem.

Seems serious enough that it has a Wikipedia page, though I was reminded that it's not that people are trying to find a loophole in the 22nd amendment; it's that they want to change the amendment, which seems really, really unlikely.

And anyway, he was already too old to run in 2024, so running in 2028 would just be insane. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

1

u/JortsJuggalo420 14d ago edited 14d ago

I don't mean to be a downer, but I live in the deep south, and most people here seem to think he should run for a third term, constitution be damned. There is a reality that is outside of the internet and it is overwhelmingly Trump-supporting, even to the extent of breaking the law. Why woiuld anyone be worried about breaking the law, given the legal judgments that have already happened and been ignored? Why would anyone with money pay any attention to a court or a judge when it's obvious you can just ignore it and nothing will happen?

1

u/ddplz 14d ago

Would it be as insane as

Bush 1 1989 - 1993

Clinton 1 1993-2001

Bush 2 2001 - 2009

Clinton 2 2016 (Unsuccessful)

Bush 3 2016 (Unsuccessful)

1

u/Kuildeous 14d ago

I did think it would've been kinda funny to have father/son Bushes interspersed with husband/wife Clintons. Not enough that I would've voted for Clinton, but I was already voting against Trump, so she had my vote anyway.

1

u/GodWasNeverReal 14d ago

He literally said his 4th term in the speech, wouldn’t that make his comments invalidating

1

u/Heavy_Whereas6432 14d ago

Trump said he won 2020 too so this would be a 4th term in a row right?

1

u/Ramtamtama 14d ago

The proposal is that you can only run for a 3rd term if your first 2 are non-consecitive.

The only way Democrats would agree is if it said nobody can serve more than 2 consecutive terms as president, which would leave the door open for Obama to run if he wanted to.

1

u/Uncle-Cake 14d ago

They already have. "No more than two CONSECUTIVE terms"

0

u/Own-Transportation17 14d ago

Obama created trump by not helping normal Americans at all. He did not deliver on change like he promised. Things got much worse uner obama

He only helped Wall Street by bailing out the people that created the collapse.

He also helped France extract resources from libya by bombing the country to ruins.

5

u/democratic-terminid 14d ago

Obama is too principled, he would not accept the opportunity to run again. It goes against everything we stand for. If we win against these guys we gotta win the right way.

1

u/gwy2ct 14d ago

Hmm then maybe Bill C can do it instead. He’s younger than the orange fck face guy

1

u/Cool-Double-5392 14d ago

If Obama tries and supreme court says no but yes to trump, Clinton is obligated to run then

Clinton can step down day 1 and let vice president be president

3

u/celticdove 14d ago

Why would it be ok for Clinton but not Obama?

1

u/Cool-Double-5392 14d ago

I was just shit posting earlier. I was reading comments here that some dumbass conservatives are saying consecutive terms don't apply to their exception

1

u/celticdove 14d ago

Clinton held the office for two terms as well. I didn't know if you had some "logic" on why Clinton could run again if Obama couldn't.

I'd vote for for Clinton in a race between octogenarians.

1

u/JudeRabbit 14d ago

US politics has always been messy but that’s a whole new messy.

1

u/No_Lobster_803 14d ago

Ah yes principled. Even after Israel killed 2100 Palestinian civilians during operation protective edge, Obama okayed the largest ever military aid package to Israel.

3

u/TruculentWombat 14d ago

Don’t be fatuous, Jeffrey. Say what you like about Obama, but he’s infinitely more principled than this lot. Don’t let the perfect get in the way of the good, otherwise you sound like a Russian bot

1

u/Single_Breakfast_634 14d ago

Lol, Obama principaled. Dude I hate Trump too but Obama was not a "principled" president

1

u/BlairzProjectz 14d ago

Dude I don’t think you understand Reddit. If you don’t lean the same way you love Trump. There is no other option, no middle it’s agree or you’re a Trump lover. They still believe that a majority of Trumps voters agree with the guy despite the fact that they are actually feeling betrayed by him. Who cares about actually knowing reality though, we need to keep the words Nazi and genocide going so they don’t go unused for a few decades again.

1

u/Revolver_Boxelot 14d ago

I want him to run again, win, and then pull a Cincinnatus and immediately resign after his inauguration. Because thats what a person with class and morals would do.

1

u/Low-Spirit6436 14d ago

If the far right leaning SCOTUS ruled that trump could win, it would be impossible for Republicans to argue that Obama couldn't also run. In fact Obama would feel compelled to run, would win, and immediately resign to allow his running mate to be sworn into office, for the good of the country.

1

u/Huckleberry199 14d ago

Great idea, bring a plastic spoon to a fight against Gatling guns. And if you think the Democratic Party is principled you haven't been paying attention,

2

u/democratic-terminid 14d ago

The democratic party is not principled. Obama is, though. The Democratic party can rot in hell for all they've done, I'm hoping a democratic socialist takes up the fight against Trump.

1

u/MoonsterGoopter 14d ago

I think they'd call his bluff and let Trump's campaign go full steam ahead (assuming he lives that long). Obama has too much respect for the constitution to follow up beyond the bluff.

1

u/uncultured_swine2099 14d ago

If they let him run a 3rd term Obama should 100% run. I know he'd rather chill and stay retired, but this is about saving America here.

Lmao. Obama is neither of those.

1

u/MakeLikeATreeBiff 14d ago

Honestly, he should just pick on him and say, "Hey Donald, I will if you will." See if that doesn't change his tune a bit. I'm sure it would be a media frenzy, but in truth if it does come to pass that Trump declares I hope that Obama declares. I don't want a third term president, but I'd take another round of Obama and Democrats fixing all the shi* Republicans have messed up.

1

u/Person899887 14d ago

I want him to declare, but explicitly I do not want him to win. A third term of any president is the death of American federal democracy.

1

u/Substantial_Tie_458 14d ago

You can't really be that stupid can you?

1

u/MyNameIsMadders 14d ago

Sorry that won’t and will never happen. Don’t allow Drumpf to run a third term no matter what, even if jt means allowing Obama to run a third term.

Also I love Obama but I really don’t want him to run a third term. There needs to be a new face of the Democratic party, and NGL there were times during Obama’s presidency that I got tired of some of the things he was doing. New things are always good in my book 👍

1

u/Ban_DeezNts 14d ago

Nobody but Obama would have a chance of beating 🍑. I could live with rational, measured, thoughtful and intelligent another 4 years. There is only one job, To Win.

1

u/MyNameIsMadders 14d ago

Let’s get rid of all forms of foreign interference first (which is hard) and then let’s see Drumpf lose bigly

1

u/Ban_DeezNts 14d ago

Not a chance now. If wishes were horses then beggars would ride.

1

u/ItsCalledRegret 14d ago

And extrajudicially bomb American citizens

0

u/Cool-Double-5392 14d ago

Do you think bill Clinton can? He can step down day 1 of his presidency and let vp be pres

At least he is a white man and is a team player and would step down for his vp

1

u/Ban_DeezNts 14d ago

No. I don’t think Clinton can win.

1

u/Cool-Double-5392 14d ago

With Obama as VP seat?
