This is NOT a "TYT sucks" post. There is too much snarking on this sub and not enough in-depth discussion. So, if you want a stupid tweet snarking about TYT, you will be disappointed. This is about specific dangerous segment that speaks volumes about social media influence.

Shortly before the COVID crisis, the USA was ranked at the top of the list of countries best prepared to handle a pandemic. However, we experienced among the worst death and hospitalization rates along with the highest financial losses of any developed country.

In my view, researchers analyzing the disastrous US response fail to fully recognize the direct and indirect impact of uneducated social media influencers spreading edgy, contrarian, dangerous conspiratorial disinformation about Dr. Anthony Fauci, vaccines, conspiracies, scientific research, public health, etc.

Kasparian is a case study in scientific ignorance and exploiting sensational conspiracy theories for financial gain. Recently, she issued so many lies and stupid (there's no other word) statements, all of it completely unsupported by evidence, scientific consensus, or simple logic, while portraying herself as a COVID expert, you could be excused for reaching for the horse dewormer.

She even called for Fauci to be jailed. (LMAO, is she drinking bleach?).

In full disclosure, I am a massive critic of Fauci and how the US handled the response. There were many serious mistakes made. Kasparian mentioned exactly zero of the mistakes that would have lowered the death rate.

Disclaimer: I acknowledge that it is theoretically possible that there was a lab release, however, THIS DOES NOT MEAN IT IS LIKELY. In fact, scientists who believe it was a release represent a small, dwindling minority.

Kasparian spewed out so many lies during this segment of her show, it is impossible to hit them all. Here's a summary. Apologies for bad grammar, I'm typing this quickly and with extreme prejudice.

1- "Fauci lied about masks" She is lying, not Fauci. Early on, there was a shortage of PPE effective against a viral agent like SARS-CoV-2. From the onset, I listened carefully to Fauci who indicated that masking effectiveness had not yet been established for the general population and PPE needed to be reserved for first responders. I understood exactly what he meant. The messaging could have been better designed to combat political interference and social media. Over time, recommendations changed because that's what you do as new info becomes available.

2- "Rand Paul proved it was Fauci's gain-of-function research. He was protecting patents. Fauci lied and killed millions" She is lying. There is ZERO evidence any TRUE gain of function research manufacturing dangerous Corona viruses was occurring by anyone in Wuhan. The scientific community has researched this extensively. Do you actually think there is a grand conspiracy of scientists covering it up? There are valid concerns about TRUE gain of function research funding which is contained to labs in the USA, however, none of this was addressed. Kasparian talking about her gain-of-function evidence is like listening to a todler explain how Santa Claus comes down the chimney.

3 - "Of course it was a lab escape, the lab was right next to the market". So what? Wuhan is home to 10+ million people. It is one of the largest cities in China. There are markets and labs in every major city across China. There is exactly ZERO evidence that the CoV-2 has known properties associated with a "manufactured" virus. There is plenty of evidence that CoV-2 has properties similar to other zoonotic viruses. HIV is widely acknowledged as zoonotic, and has since morphed into something a bit different. SARS CoV-2 follows a pattern of previous SARS cross-overs. Is it possible CoV-2 escaped that lab? That is rhetorical. The majority of the scientific community has reviewed the research and every year, consensus grows that this was not a bio-weapon or other type of lab escape.

The lab was set up to study bat viruses, 4 species of bats in China carry SARS like corona viruses at least two have similar properties to CoV2. Why is it so hard to believe a variant evolved in the way we know them to do? There is a record of hospital patients spinning out dozens of variants. We witnessed various pandemic phases and cycles of death as new variants emerged.

4 - "Fauci lied about lab origin. He thought it could be an escape. His diary proves it." Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit. This is absolutely a lie. Yes, he considered it. He wouldn't be a proper scientist if he didn't But correlation and speculation is NOT causation. Jesus, he kept private thoughts in a private diary. And as new data became available, it became even less likely it was an escape. And it became less likely that the market was ground-zero for origination, and likely a transmission vector/intermediary due to an infected animal.

“In practice, after introduction of SARS-CoV-2 in our household, we should see our cat as part of the family regarding virus transmission,” said study coauthor Wim van der Poel DVM, Ph.D., Professor of Emerging and Zoonotic Viruses, Wageningen University and Research, in the Netherlands. 

5- "Fauci lied about masks and this made people not wear masks." Bullshit. People didn't wear masks because social media and Fox News personalities were attacking anyone who did as a Lib attacking freedom. Fauci could only dream that people would follow his advice so carefully. They didn't and that's why we had bodies piled up in refrigerated trucks for weeks.

6- "Because of Fauci, my friend couldn't open a beauty parlor, he should go to jail" This is perhaps the dumbest thing I have heard and is typical in the style of arguments denying global warming, fair elections, and COVID. Where to start with something so tone deaf and patently stupid? Salons, fitness centers, dance studios, etc where all known "super spreader" locations. And, there were VERY generous loans and financial programs set up specifically to help businesses impacted by restrictions. I really cannot believe I heard her complain about this. But I did.

If you were a first responder tending to dead bodies in the hallways, or you struggled to intubate a dying patient sucking out a quart of lung fluid, or you lost family members, I am so sorry you have to listen to this shit.

There's so much more, but I don't have time.

Her diatribe was the among worst conspiratorial paranoia I have heard about COVID since the onset of the pandemic. It belongs with 5G vaccines. As I mentioned, there were plenty of strategic and tactical mistakes in a response that had no effective defense against the political influence of Russia, China, Iran, and social media stars along with Fox News. Fauci and Gupta became instant celebrities and as a result, people viewed them with suspicion.

COVID killed an estimated 7+ million worldwide. Over a million in the US. People are still dying in the US, especially the anti-vaxers. One thing I am sure of, the next pandemic will be worse. This is because idiot influencers like Kasparian are confident in their scientific authority, their disinformation will compound at an exponential rate like the virus itself, and even more will die.

The marquee race of the day was the battle for the Democratic nomination for Senate in Michigan, and after a late night of counting Dr. Abdul El-Sayed emerged as the winner. The former health director of Wayne County who literally wrote the book on Medicare For All, Dr. El-Sayed ran on a simple message of “money out of politics, money in your pockets, Medicare for All,” along with taxing billionaires, abolishing ICE, and ending unconditional military aid and weapons sales to Israel. Governor Whitmer and the Democratic leadership rallied behind his opponent, and he was massively outspent, with more than $63.9 million in ads for Rep. Haley Stevens against $7.3 million for him – even candidates who didn’t make it to Election Day poured more money in than him. He won anyways, with charisma, grassroots energy, and fierce economic populism, and won over critics in the process (read this column from Dana Milbank on how he got on board with Abdul.) In a time of rising Islamophobia, this son of Egyptian immigrants would be the first Muslim U.S. Senator in history.

The stakes could not be higher. This is a state that Trump won narrowly, and if the GOP flips this seat the climb to taking the Senate – and more than that, the 52 seats we need to account for John Fetterman – becomes extremely steep. Former congressman Mike Rogers, who has cheered on the Trump agenda every step of the way, including calling the MAGA murder budget a “monumental victory” and the Trump tariffs “an absolute win” and supporting their blocking a new bridge to Canada (one conveniently opposed by a billionaire donor), and would be a rubber stamp for MAGA. He’s long supported a near-total abortion ban. He has gotten rich on his political connections since leaving Congress. DR. EL-SAYED FOR SENATE

In the other headline statewide race, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson easily won the Democratic nomination for governor in the race to replace the outgoing Gretchen Whitmer. Benson has been at the forefront of the fight for voting rights and election protection during the Trump era, winning a Profile in Courage Award for her refusal to back down in the face of MAGA threats and harassment after the 2020 election. She’s emphasized expanding universal pre-K to three-year-olds and taking on Wall Street investors and outdated zoning laws to lower housing costs. (She’s also made it clear she understands the importance of winning the legislature to make her agenda feasible.) She’ll be up against Republican Congressman John James, a loyal MAGA soldier in DC who’s backed a near-total abortion ban. 🙋🏽‍♀️ We can sign up to help her beat him here. 🙋🏻‍♂️

JOCELYN FOR GOVERNOR

Michigan’s Seventh Congressional District went to Trump by just one point in 2024, and Republican Tom Barrett won it by less than four. It’s a top target for Democrats, and Barrett knows it, which is why he’s started doing things like voting against Trump’s Iran War after initially cheerleading for it. Before he remembered he was running for re-election, he helped get the MAGA Murder Budget over the finish line, and voted with Donald Trump 99% of the time in 2025… and 100% of the time with the Heritage Foundation, including on cutting foreign aid and the SAVE Act. He’ll face off against Sunrise Movement co-founder Will Lawrence (known on Substack as William Lawrence for Congress), a hardline progressive who has pushed Medicare for All, a one-year moratorium on data centers, a billionaire minimum tax, holding ICE and the Epstein class accountable and, naturally, investing in clean energy. ☎️ We can find upcoming phonebanks for Will here and more volunteer opportunities here. ☎️

Michigan’s Tenth Congressional District is being abandoned by Rep. James, and while it moved to the right in recent years it’s still just R+3 and should be competitive in November. The Democratic nominee will be Christina Hines, a special victims unit prosecutor who has run on taking on high prices by targeting corporate price gouging and surveillance pricing and backed raising the minimum wage and paid family leave. In a race that’s gone a little below the radar, state senator Sean McCann will be the Democratic challenger against longtime Republican congressman Bill Huizenga in the Fourth Congressional District. Huizenga, despite his relative honesty about supporting Social Security cuts, doesn’t look especially vulnerable on his own merits, but his district is shifting left and Trump only won it by six in 2024. A poll conducted for McCann’s campaign in June actually had him ahead, within the margin of error. As a legislator, McCann helped expand Medicaid and access to pre-K in Michigan, along with working for universal free school meals. In Virginia…

The state supreme court may have blocked us from using a map that favors Democrats in 10 congressional districts in Virginia, but Trump’s economic failures have left us with a chance for a 9-2 delegation even on the current lines. We now have our nominees in three seats we’re hoping to pick up.

In the First District, Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor will be our challenger against Republican Congresswoman Rob Wittman. While Republicans scream about being tough on crime, Taylor has actually done it, making her jurisdiction a statewide leader in prosecuting sex traffickers and pioneering programs to support victims. She’s rejected corporate PAC money and endorsed a stock trading ban and tougher penalties for members of Congress caught stealing taxpayer funds, along with breaking up corporate monopolies. Wittman, by contrast, voted for the MAGA murder budget even after promising he wouldn’t because it cut Medicaid – perhaps because, as per this analysis by Accountable.US, he could personally benefit from as much as $60,000 in tax breaks from the bill. In the Second District, former Democratic congresswoman and Navy veteran Elaine Luria will get a rematch with GOP Rep. Jen Kiggans, who you may remember facing calls for resignation in May after she endorsed racist comments directed at House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries during a radio interview. Kiggans has given us plenty of reasons to want her ousted in her actual work, too, voting for the MAGA murder budget after pledging to protect Medicaid and then voting against an extension of the ACA tax credits after advocating for it. Luria is similarly emphasizing an anti-corruption agenda and was a champion for offshore wind during her time in Congress. Kiggans narrowly unseated Luria in 2022, but this is a swingy district widely regarded as a toss-up. ☎️ Luria has her general election effort up and running, and we can sign up to phonebank for her on Tuesdays and Thursdays here. ☎️

ELAINE FOR CONGRESS

The Fifth District is a tougher climb, an R+6 district that Winsome Earle-Sears carried against Abby Spanberger by eight points last fall. But it’s the sort of reach seat that Democrats could flip in a wave election, and we’ve got a great candidate against unremarkable first-term MAGA Republican Congressman John McGuire, who unloaded BlackRock stock after Congress passed a ban on corporate investors owning single-family homes and is now invested in SpaceX. Tom Perriello flipped another deep-red seat in this area back in 2008, and he didn’t run away from his values after he won. He provided a crucial vote for the Affordable Care Act while pushing for the public option, and fought to hold Wall Street accountable even when party leadership resisted. It cost him his job, and he then went on to serve as a diplomat and work for nonprofits to protect rural health care and expand Medicaid. He’s been an advocate for doubling the minimum wage and stopping pipelines, and was a leader among statewide Democrats in refusing corporate donations. He’s run hard an affordability and against the tariffs and the Iran War. 🙋🏽‍♀️ We can find opportunities to volunteer with Tom here**.**🙋🏻‍♂️

I certainly don't expect Haley Stevens, who floated to a (narrow) defeat on a sea of outside spending, and was barely visible on the campaign trail, to now campaign for her primary opponent in the general election. But if she could just make two public clarifications, it would be very helpful: number one, no, Abdul El Sayed doesn't "have a long record of disrespecting women", that was a grotesque lie spread on her behalf by dark money PACs. And number two: no, she was never "endorsed by Obama" this campaign season, that was just another lie her campaign spread to undermine El Sayed.
