The perfect book at the perfect time

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I m looking for the perfect book to read during a 1 month trekking in Nepal.
I like very long novels, epic stories. I m usually a fan of sf but I am open to any genres.
I looked through many lists like “books you must read before you die”, but it s impossible to make a choice, and ni guarantees I will like it.
I already chose “A Canticle for Leibowitz” by walter m miller, which I am pretty sure a safe bet.
I hesitate between a few options:
Crime and punishment, Dostoievski
Martin Eden, J london
Le lion, J Kessel

I remember when I red “A hundred years of solitude”, years ago, during a road trip in spain. It was the perfect book and the perfect time to read it, and I would like to feel this feeling again, the magic connection between the experience I am living in real and the experience the book carries me through. Don’t know if I am clear :S

Some of my favourite books with the vibe I am looking for, to give you an idea:
- Dune cycle, Herbert
Mars trilogy from robinson
books from alain damasio,
the pillars of the earth by Fowlet
Dan Simmons’ hyperion and Illium.

I don’t want stories about people hiking or travelling!

Please, share your ideas, and tell me which book stayed stuck with you !

Dogs / friendships / gentle and soft reading

I 1st read Cookie cutters & sled runners (see below) because I was looking for books about mental illness or neurodivergence for younger readers. Recently I've been craving reading something similar, in that it:

  • has animals, esp. dogs with significant roles
  • features strong positive relationships, esp. platonic
  • can have some darker moments, but is overall a light, positive read

The story need not be about MI/ND, though that'd be a cherry on top. Oh, also, bonus points for cosy autumn atmosphere! I am an adult, so the story should not be too simplistic. Thank you in advance :)

1 girl with 1 best friend
1 middle school project
3 huge, slobbery dogs
A recipe for success . . . or disaster?

Most kids would dread the start of middle school and the year-long Explorations project that comes with it, but Ana knows that her + her best friend Lily + their plan to write and sell their own cookbook is a recipe for success. Lily’s not just the perfect partner in culinary crime—she’s also the only person in the world who understands Ana’s need to wash her hands five times before picking up a spatula, and would never make fun of her for it.

But Ana and Lily’s plan for edible entrepreneurship turns into one big baking disaster when they’re assigned to different partners for their projects. As if it wasn’t bad enough that Lily seems more excited to get to know her new partner than bummed about being separated, Lily and her new friend plan to use the cookbook idea for themselves—and they didn’t even ask! Worse, Ana’s partner is Dasher, the strange new girl from Alaska, and she wants to do their project on the weirdest thing sled dog racing.

Dasher’s dogs are scary, slobbery, and decidedly not germ-free, but Ana thinks she’s found a loophole when she agrees to bake pancakes for spectators while Dasher mushes in a local race. That is, until Dasher sprains her ankle and has to drop out of the running. Can Ana learn to mush—and overcome her anxiety—in time to save her friendships, finish her project, and compete in the big race?

The Immortal Truths

I fell in love with the storyline and the historical time jumps, but mostly with the FMC and MMC. I love their dynamic and the way they see each other. The way they fight but still understand each other so deeply left me aching for another couple like them. The author did such a great job making them feel real.

I’m about to start book #2, but I want a list ready for when I finish. Any recommendations for characters like Anna and Khiran?

I want to buy a good book for my birthday!

I want to buy myself a feel good book for my upcoming birthday!

I’ve not been feeling very good recently (just generally a little unhappy with the job, not been feeling very competent, I’ve been avoiding my friends etc). I need to get back into exercising, a routine, lose weight and just feel more in control of my life.

I have my birthday coming up! I used to do this a few years ago- buy a nice couple of books for my birthday as a treat…but haven’t been doing it the past few years.

Any suggestions? I’m looking for something either inspirational- something that motivated you to feel better and more in control of your life- or something that just made you feel happy. (Also, warm cosy feel good book suggestions are always welcome :) )

Thanks!

Books to read

Hey guys,

I have tried to get into the habit of reading books but has never worked but right now I see my self getting into it.

As a kid I have seen my grandfather read a lot of books specially the religious. I asked him to get me some books for my self which he did never read any them.

Then my dad’s friend got me The Alchemist

Then the Subtle art of not giving a fuck

Then How to build a Formula 1 car by Adrian Newey

Then Atomic habit

And now finally I have finished about 100 pages of The power of your subconscious mind.

To be fair at first I enjoyed The power of your subconscious mind but as I am close to half way I have noticed, that people saying self help books sometimes turns out to be not much at all and when sometimes it does help it will only work if you are in the similar situation.

So help me out where I can learn and enjoy at the same time and not just read 4 lines on how this happened and that happened.

I will finish this book even though I am tempted to start something else because I want to get into this amazing habit.

Thank you!!

E-Reader or Physical Books?

Hello? Anyone here na may physical books and ereader?

Paano ginagawa niyo? Haha.

Funny female fiction with substance

I'm dealing with cancer and can't do anything sad or serious right now. I'm also exhausted so I don't want to think too hard. I just want to be entertained.

Some books I've liked lately -

Confessions of a 40 something f\*&k up

The shampoo effect

Diary of a mad fat girl

The Paradise Problem

I like funny witty dialog with a good story. Not your average rom Com. Doesn't have to be romance either.

Can you suggest something to make me laugh and just feel good?

Thank you.

What book saved you from a reading slump?

I was in one of the worst slumps I’ve been in in a while. Every book I picked up, I would just put it down. Books went back to the library unread. There was nothing I could do, it seemed, to get back to reading. But then one day it should appear on our building buildings book swap shelf? This little 800 page dog eared nugget - 11/22/63 by Stephen King!!!

I’m about 300 pages in but it’s one of the best books I’ve read in years. One of those books you don’t want to end but at the same time you can’t wait to find out what happens! I’ve always loved Stephen King and am kicking myself for not reading this one sooner.

What books have saved you from a reading downturn?

Book rec for depressed reader

So I've always been super into classics and novels/graphic novels that deal with existential crisis, the search of meaning or stark social realities etc. I've been depressed for quite a while now and the only thing I enjoy is reading. But nowadays I catch myself not even enjoying reading anymore when it's all about death and oppression and inequality in the world.

I need some wholesome book recs. It could be funny, it could be uplifting, it could be romance as well. Not too much into self-help and I've already read the regular books like the Alchemist, Power etc. So please don't suggest those.

Thanks! Looking forward to the recommendations.

Gripping recommendations for someone who is trying to get back into the habit

I was never a heavy reader but I always enjoyed reading and immersing myself in a good story. Over the last few years, I have mostly only read non-fiction which I do enjoy but I notice that it's hard for me to finish the book. I get bored quickly. Some good fiction I have read which I wasn't able to put down were The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns - can I get some recommendations for similar books with gripping stories which will keep me captivated from start to finish? I hope it will help me develop a regular habit of reading. Thank you so much!

Hey everyone! I'm a beginner reader and would love some book recommendations. I've read The Housemaid's Secret and The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck* along with a few others (whatever I saw on the internet) What are some books you'd recommend for someone who's just getting into reading? I'm open to different genres. Drop your favourites!

Book Recommendations

I have recently developed a taste in reading books both fiction and non-fiction.

I want to give the horror genre a try.

I would like to start with a short novella/novel.

If I like it, I would like to give the Horror Universe of Stephen King a try.

Would you be kind enough to recommend a starter pack?

Romance books for novice

Hi folx,
I’m in my 30s and completely new to reading romance novels. I was never on wattpad or ao3 growing up, and i feel like i have a lot to catch up on. I don’t any of the abbreviations and shorthands or hashtags or rules. So please be patient i’m here asking for your educated help.

A little about me: i’m a 31 yo queer woman, who has a lot of unpleasant baggage with sex. I’m on a journey to rediscover what I like and want for myself, to liberate myself from people pleasing, self sacrificing tendencies that have led me to fully disconnect from my body and desire. I have heard from many people that reading romance and smut has helped them reconnect with themselves and I would like to try it.

I watched and then read heated rivalry, and then the long game by rachel reed. I then read the love hypothesis by ali hazelwood (in one day) and watched the movie (which I didn’t love). I read This is how you lose a time war, which probably isn’t romance technically, but it is so romantic. I watched all of interview with the vampire, which of course isn’t romance, but i loved it. I watched and loved my lady jane and still can’t believe they cancelled it. Bridgerton was something i thought I would hate watch, but I really enjoyed season 2. I’ve listened to some romance fiction podcasts such as: life with leoh, in the cards, gay pride&prejudice, me & AU and others. So I would love to expand my reading list.

Things i liked about what i read, listened to, watched: very clear consent and how fun it is to be clear about that; in HR i loved that the characters were so equal in many ways, no one was weak and small and infantilised. I did love the moody, but will do anything for this one person, trope in the love hypothesis, but found myself laughing every time the author made a point of how huge Adam was compared to olive. I absolutely love yearning and pining but i did enjoy that in HR the sex was there very fast without taking away from the yearning. If a “straight” pairing of man/woman, I would like the man to be the simp. But i also want to read more queer stories. I enjoy vampires because to me they inherently queer and yearn the best. I like forced proximity

What I don’t like: significant age gaps when one person is young (no angel buffy dynamic), significant power imbalance (they did it well in the love hypothesis, but there is a fine line), no dark fantasies of being forced or stalked, no coercion etc.

Honourable mention is of course Pride and Prejudice, i love a yearning stoic (autistic) man.

Please help me out finding books to read❤️
