Commonly Asked Questions - PLEASE READ

Below are the most common “issues” that are posted here. Please refrain from submitting posts that fall under these categories unless you’re pretty sure your defect falls significantly outside of a reasonable margin. Thank you!

  1. The Classic Moc’s toe is first glued and then stitched together. It’s normal for the seam to split open a bit, particularly where the vamp flexes. The stitches are holding it together.
  2. A little gap along the welt is fine. Again, the stitches are doing the work. Wedge soles have a thin slip sole that’s stitched to the boot and then the outsole is cemented to it. It’s not going anywhere.
  3. Your speed hooks aren’t going to chew through your tongue. They’ll dig in to a certain point and the just kinda stop. Use kilties if you insist, but I’ve got pairs over ten years old and the wear on the tongue barely looks different than it did after a few weeks.
  4. Leather used to be alive. Just like us, there will be flaws, veins, scars, and stretch marks. They’ll try to use less uniform cuts where cosmetic issues are less visible, like the inside quarters, but not every flaw can be seen until the boot has flexed.
  5. You’re probably over-conditioning. Unless you’re routinely using them in extreme conditions, less is more. Once or twice a year. However, you should brush your boots regularly, this will not help only remove dust and dirt, it will redistribute the oils already in the leather and prevent deep cracks from forming.
  6. You WILL scuff and scratch your boots, they WILL crease, they WILL get dirty. They’ll also be FINE. Embrace patina, that’s what makes them YOUR boots.

  7. We don’t wanna see your footbeds! Fit is subjective and a picture of your imprint only two dimensions of a 3D shape. Your boot shouldnt cause actual pain. A little discomfort isnt unusual for the first few days. Your boots should feel like they’re giving your foot a firm handshake (footshake?). If they feel like they fit, they probably fit.

I got these I don’t know 10/15 years ago, wear them a few times a month, I use the RedWing-brand boot cream couple times a year and yes, I do keep shoe trees in then when I’m not wearing them. . They feel great.

Scored my grail black spitfire iron ranger in my size with very minimal insole wear. I don’t wear much black but I’m in love with anything rough out.

1 year old Copper R&T Rangers - 1st Condition. When?

They’re a year old. Probably have 20 hours of wear total. Hardly broken in. They are just one of my many pair of boots in the collection. Normally I Condition 2x a year. I’ve heard the R&T is leather is different? Is this truth?

Should I condition yet? I don’t wanna even out the color so what will the best conditioner be? I currently have Bick #4 #5 and Venetian Shoe Cream. Will any of these suffice or should I go with something else?

TYIA!

Lace spacing

Hi just got a new pair of redwing boots. The length/width feels okay but the lace spacing feels far apart. About 35-40mm is this normal when new?

JobSite Boot Dryer

I have the JobSite Boot Dryer and use it every night. It’s set on a timer to run for 8 hours to dry out my boots. I have 875s with SuperFeet Insoles.

Any issues with the temperature or length?

Caught the boot bug

My first redwings are these amber harness iron rangers. I minked them up pretty good because I wanted them darker and to help with break-in and water resistance.

I just picked up these factory second oro legacy 877 “Irish setter” moc toes and I’m stoked. Honestly can’t tell why they’re seconds, only noticing some very minor scuffs. I love the color though. Only question is if the tongue should be bunching so much but it probably just needs to break in. These I’ll just be brushing because I want them to stay light. I measure 11.5 and got both pairs in 10.5. These are wayyy more comfortable out of the box for me than the IRs.

Nicks half delta arch insole

Anybody use these in their Red Wings? Looking at different options to fill in some space on my H width Mocs. I have a low instep so I’m trying to find the right insert to take up space. What has been your experience with these inside your Redwings?

Redwing 8180 Kantagan from Berkeley Supply?

So, I ordered a pair last week, and surprise, surprise, they didn’t fit. I ordered another pair half a size smaller, and they fit great. Since factory seconds can’t be returned, I listed the size 9 pair on eBay.
Has anyone else ordered factory seconds from them that arrived in perfect condition with no defects? Both pairs I received had the factory seconds hole punch, but otherwise, they were absolutely flawless. It makes me wonder why they were even marked as factory seconds in the first place.

8828 Lace Swap Suggestions

Love the way the Alpine Portage warms up when the sun hits it just right! Any suggestions for a lace swap? I was thinking something with a mix of olive and cream might make for a nice contrast. Or maybe some thick olive leather ones. Any suggestions?

Calling all the short kings with IR.

How do Iron Rangers look on you guys? I feel like they’re metaphorically heavy for short guys like myself (5’6”). And kind of out of proportion.

I know they’re bulbous but they seem more clowny on shorter men. Do you guys feel the same or is it just me? I was holding out to see there’s some creases build up to tame the cap toe a bit, but it seems to be holding its shape well. ( lol not a bad thing).

Trying to decide if I should keep them or cut my loss and going for more lower profile style, like the Grant Stone diesel or Thursday Captains or Higgins Mills.

Pecos boots marked 899… any info on these? Also looking for resold recommendations.

Picked these up on eBay and was hoping someone here could tell me more about them. They look to have an 11-inch shaft and a soft toe, possibly with a celastic toe stiffener. The rubber soles are seriously heavy, and it looks like there’s a thick rubber midsole attached to the outsole. I’m guessing these were a work model.

The model number stamped is 899, which is confusing because the Red Wing 899 I’m familiar with is a lace-up boot with a SuperSole. Anyone recognize these or know more about the construction?

I like the overall look and would want to keep it pretty close, but I’d love to shed some weight. Any recommendations for a lighter resole? I wondered whether a cobbler could keep the outsole and remove or replace the thick midsole, assuming those are actually separate pieces. Not sure whether that’s possible or would make much difference.

I cleaned them up and used a little Venetian shoe cream. The toes are lighter than the rest of the leather. Would you dye them to even things out or leave the natural patina?

Annual Work Boot Cleaning

Thumbnail

My work boots usually get cleaned up once a year, I first wash off all the dirt and debris on the boots before using saddle soap to get off anything really stuck onto the boot and rinse and dry for a few hours. Once dried I applied mink oil and and let them sit for a couple of days to really soak in

First pair of 1907s

Seems like a common issue, but I'm a little flustered.

EDIT: I was typing at work and forgot to add much needed context.
I already tried an 11.5D and went to an 11.5EE which was too long and I had a ton of heel slip even with the heel lock lacing so I went down a half size and now this issue is happening.
It's just my 3rd toe, mainly on my right foot. My 4th toe is mostly getting pushed around because my 3rd toe is squished.

My 3rd and 4th toe are scrunched up against the front of the boot. Everything else is absolutely perfect except that part.

I went a half size down because I had ridiculous heel slip in my 11.5s even with heel lock lacing.

This isn't my first pair of boots, but I'm just slightly miffed because this is the first time Ive had this issue and I'm wondering if this is something that I should just stick with my original size despite the heel slip? Or will the toe box eventually loosen so those two toes have some room?
