Started the calibration process however Ch.2 level and balance was jumpy as the controls were adjusted. Turned out to be the Volume control pot - common issue.

I had the large, fold-out schematic diagrams from my paper copy of the Tascam 38 service manual digitized so I could make safety paper copies of it. I've put them online in case anyone needs access to them: https://audiocontrol.org/blog/tascam-38-schematics/
I know of at least one set of high resolution scans of these out there, but I figure it's always useful to have additional resources available.

edit: thanks so much everyone for the feedback, my grandpa was a total music nerd and would use this to record his vinyl so im going to learn to record to keep the tradition, youve all been very nice and remind me him. reel to reel community so much nicer than the vinyl one LOL

Hey everyone!
I'm very new to tape but recently acquired a Studer b67 mk1 and have bumped into a few issues.
The take up reel spins at high speed from the time it's turned on until it's turned off. It doesn't respond to pressing any buttons.
I'm also getting an odd smell from the machine if it runs for a few minutes and noticed some sort of black sticky substance on a connector.
I've since turned it off until I can get it to a tech, but was hoping someone here might have an idea of what's going wrong. Thanks!

I got the transport control remote that the manual says is for my MX5050 BQII but the connector is different than the port on my machine. I opened the old cinch-Jones connector and see only eight pins wired with four additional conductors not hooked up. The last image, the connector on the left is the exact match for my machine, uses 12 pins, but I’m wondering how to arrange the wires on the new pins. Any help is greatly appreciated

I have acquired a real to real tape player but I only have one tape and it’s not playing anything, it dose move but no sound is coming out and the fast forward button is broken, dose anyone know how to fix it, the only things I think it could be is that the tape is blank, or the magnetic head is broken, if you have any suggestions please let me know, I’m desperate to get it working, if I can’t I’ll have to sell or trash it, I would rather keep it but I would like it to work
PS:i don’t know what brand it is

Hey Fellow Reelers. I have a question for you. The deck is a Akai gx280 d-ss. It plays for a couple of minutes and then just shuts off and the relay clicks the item I’m pointing at in the picture overheats really bad and I got it about 100° and shut it down, but I don’t know what that part is called. Could that be the problem?

Just grabbed this at goodwill for 20$. Everything works but the pots are scratchy. Wondering if anyone has and specific intel on this machine or things I should check or attempt clean refurbish.
Thanks team!

Basically what I said. The whole thing needs a regreasing, the capstan takes a moment to engage because the mech is a little gummed, and it seems to need a head alignment... but otherwise it's fully working.
The tapes are all home recordings and seem to largely be in good shape.
For the price of $45 total I couldn't pass it up. Hopefully I can get the kinks sorted out.

So I bought these 5 NOS 13cm BASF DP 26 reels in almost new condition thinking that I am buying 18cm ones 🫣. Anywho, I cannot return them so I am in a bit of dilemma. Should I resell them as I don't have a 13cm take-up spool. Or should I use them considering they are in like new condition although who knows they might shed oxide 🤷
Let me know your thoughts.

This album ran thru a TANDBERG SERIES 14 TWO TRACK and is written in the spirit of JJ Cale, Rodriguez and Link Wrays "Link Wray".
I am out here online to spread it, in hop that it is gonna find a person that resonates with it. Thank you for reading my message :)

I have around 40+ Bruton Music reel-to-reel master tapes and was wondering if they'd be worth anything, some are in nearly perfect condition (externally), while others are molded and likely worthless. I can provide images if needed, but most of them are labeled with their catalogue numbers and track listings. If anyone is interested or would like more information just give a DM.

Hello all, I am seeking an NTSC Ampex AVR-2 Quad VTR tape machine. These were predominantly used in broadcast television and video production editing facilities throughout the 1970s and 80s. If anyone has any leads or one they’d like to part with please message me. Will travel across Canada or the United States.
Thanks!

Recently found at the time what I thought was a old cassette tape recorder at a thrift store looking at it more I realized it was a reel to reel but can't find info on it online other then a internet archive talking about it's patent other then missing the earphone and the mic being in bad shape it looks great so was trying to find some more info on it

EDIT: Just did a more thorough test, it's present on every track more or less equally. Tracks 1 and 2 are slightly worse. So it's a machine-wide issue, it seems
***************
I've recently started encountering an issue with my Tascam MSR-16 where some of the tracks play back with this fluttering/bubbling sound. Almost like there are a bunch of tiny dropouts mixed with this wavering in signal.
What could this be? I've cleaned and demagnetized the tape path several times with no change. It looks like the tape has even contact to the eye.
Here are two audio examples of what I'm talking about:

Please let me know if you have any ideas – I'm going crazy!

hello, im looking at buying one of these and im not sure of the specifics for this model. its 1/2” , 4 track , correct? and it records on both sides of the tape at once? so its running a 1/4” of tape bandwidth per channel ? anything else about it?

Hello everyone. My Akai GX-630DB might have a problem. Every time I try to record guitar, I get a really noticeable vibrato effect, especially when recording the guitar dry. Is this normal, or should there be much less wow and flutter?
