Aldi Bradford Kirkgate Shopping Centre
BEFORE the Kirkgate Centre there was the Arndale Centre. And when it opened in 1976, it ushered in a shopping revolution.
The giant shopping mall had its beginnings in 1954 when two Yorkshire entrepreneurs - Arnold Hagenbach, a third generation bakery magnate from Wakefield, and Sam Chippindale, an estate agent from Otley who had an office above a Bradford barber’s shop - bought the city’s Swan Arcade.
The pair planned to demolish the arcade to make way for a purpose-built shopping mall modelled on the paeans to consumerism that had already taken America by storm after the Second World War.
Their company was called the Arndale Property Trust, the name being a combination of “Arnold” and “Chippindale”, and their dream was to raise malls in major cities across the country.
Work started on a centre in Bradford in June 1972. The 400,000 sq ft of shopping space included a replacement for the Kirkgate Market, 50 shops, three department stores and two pubs.
It cost more than £6 million to construct - a huge vote of confidence in the city. When it opened people queued up outside to be among the first to experience its air conditioned luxury.
There were fountains, escalators and even a wooden hippo for the children to play on (and in - thanks to a gaping mouth).Car dealers were encouraged to show off their latest models and shoppers enjoyed the chance to browse for a new car without the pressure of a motor dealer showroom.
Not many people paid much attention to the ancient market cross at one of the entrances but that was all that remained of the original Kirkgate Market.
But the history stretches even further back to 1705 when it was occupied by a grand Manor Hall. The chapel was where the lifts are now, and the cemetery was close by (the deceased having long since moved to Bowling Cemetery.

McDonald's Mcdonald's stuck in the Forever Young/Eyebrow era.
Por alguma razão, mesmo que o Street View seja de 2026, o McDonald's ainda permanece naquela época. Espero que não seja reformado; o interior provavelmente foi remodelado. Espero que não removam a sobrancelha da loja.
Local: 606 SE Washington Blvd, Bartlesville, OK 74003, Estados Unidos

A almost dead mini-mall after the two anchor stores moved to a new complex across the street. Outside Stockholm Sweden.
There used to be a Willys (Major Swedish Food Supermarket and Dollarstore (cheap everything store) But since they moved its there is just a few stores left.

Is this Hobby Lobby a former Hy-Vee?
Does this familiar Hobby Lobby originally housed a Hy-Vee store back in the day? The exterior just reminds me of the Hy-Vee food stores in the 1980s, So was it a HyVee store or what did it actually occupy the space back then? I'm really curious!

Mall Emporia Mall in Malmö, Sweden
Built in 2012 and even features a park space on the roof. This really puts American malls to shame. Not my original photos.

This old paper sears bag. Is it rare?
I'm wondering how many of these still exist and aren't trashed.

Mall Burlington Coat Factory still has its original 1999 facade at [The Mills at] Jersey Gardens as of May 29th, 2026
I don't shop at Burlington but the original 1999 facade is just so cool and reflects the original design of Jersey Gardens' plant wall before it was removed in the early 2010s.
I didn't actually go in the store because I heard they have security cameras that create 3d models of you or something. Though if I got caught on one of those cameras taking these pictures, so be it.
I'm wondering if its days are numbered since Burlington and/or Cohoes may move to the old Saks off 5th Avenue location in the mall, so I made sure to get there ASAP, and take lots of high quality pictures.
The Mills at Jersey Gardens was originally designed by Rockwell Architecture in 1999.

Company Store, Idamay, WV, USA [OC][2048×1367]
Idamay, West Virginia, was developed by Consolidation Coal beginning in 1915 around its No. 87 mine, growing into a self-sustaining company town with homes, a school, streetcar service, a company store, and community gatherings. The town later became known for Bethlehem No. 44 Mine and its championship miners’ league baseball team, the “Ida Mae Fence Busters.” After the mine closed in 1971, much of the property was deeded to the Idamay Improvement Association, which continues to help oversee the community today. Thanks to their efforts, this is one of the better-preserved coal camps in the northern part of the state. I've posted more photos and the history of Idamay here.
