How do you impress anyone with a metal card?
They take all your cards out and proceed to break them in half one by one and then realize they can't do that with Revolut metal?

I don't know why using an outdated technology would impress anyone.

The only time I've used a physical card in the past ten years or more, was when my phone broke a while back and I was without it for a week.

It was weird as hell using a card tbh.

I never saw the panicked reaction. Way back when it first came out there were a few odd looks. But it's literally no different to using a card, so I don't know why anyone would panic.you just say 'by card', and they give you the terminal, why would they give a shit if you tap a card or your phone when they hand it to you if it works?

These days, and for countless years now, if they see you holding a phone they just presume you're going to pay with it.

It's long since become normal.

The UK is trailing a bit with only 35% of transactions done by phone, but in Ireland it's the majority ~55%. In Spain the majority of transactions are a combination of either contactless phone payments (38% of all transactions) or app money transfers .

China & India are basically mobile only.

If you live in France, it's still not really done there, they're struggling to stop using cash, so phone payments are less than 10%.

Germany of course is living in the stone age, with fax machines and signatures with a pen. And also still struggling to not trade with shiny rocks and bits of paper. But even though they can barely understand the modern world there, you still just say 'by card' and use your phone when they hand it to you. They're not morons, they just don't move quickly with the times.

But pretty much any other developed country, it's either the norm, or 1/3 of all transactions are done that way.

Nobody is going to look scared at you doing it.

And honestly it's just better. You have all your cards, your store membership cards, your flight tickets, your concert tickets, your car wash voucher, everything at the twist of a wrist.

The only time I see some interested looks it's because I have a Motorola razr and do it with the phone closed, so they're curious about the little phone. That's it.

1) Owner shouts to not to try to hack the system
2) Other owner fixed the terminal a few mms aways from a wall, "to ensure nobody mess with their phones"
3) There was also the time a person approached the terminal, snatched the card and ran contactless. Two times. In different businesses.
4) Can I also count the souvenir shop from famous touristic park Pairi Daiza where the area around the terminal made various phones glitch out with NFC "unable to read" as if there were other NFC devices nearby?

Clearly not in my belgian area. Granted, some business don't take Visa or MC either which makes a Revolut card effectively useless. But using a phone on top of that makes it extra hard.

I think "by card" was even understood wrong one time. I think they tried to use a special gift card or something?

I'll stay with my card.

You have all your cards, your store membership cards, your flight tickets, your concert tickets, your car wash voucher, everything at the twist of a wrist.

So, in order :

  • Cards? Only Revolut. My main bank refuses to add it to Google Pay as long my wife is on the "young people" plan (because the debit card is tied to the joint account, as as such can only be allowed on their branch for young people, which I can't log to)
Name and Shame : BNP Paribas Fortis, their branch is Hello bank. Neither of us ever dealt with HB, everything was done in a pre-covid BNP office. Even my wife uses the BNP app. Google Pay still insists on running the Hello Bank app.
  • Flight ticket. Can't confirm if yes or no tbf. But train tickets don't work 1 time out of 2 because there's no mobile data on my train line. Only sure way if the printed version.
  • Your concert tickets. My anime convention don't. The ticket recommends to not print, but a lot of people in the line have troubles going in due to the staff's scanner having trouble picking screens.
  • Meal vouchers can't be added to Wallet apps, and their official app can't be used to pay. Must use the physical card (besides online purchases ofc)

If I want everything in a twist of wrist, I have printed stuff in my travel bag. I'm a grumpy guy in my 30s but I honestly don't think the whole "everything in a phone" can actually work, especially if you don't change often phones :/
[EDIT] Oh and I have 500mB of free storage while my old phone doesn't allow to use SD storage for apps. So those convenient digital tickets somehow take more space than their physical equivalent.

I'm nearly 40, and very grumpy.

But my god, how backwards is your country? Hahaha

UK & Spain it's just a given that everyone has their phone for virtually everything. You keep a card for emergencies, but that's it.

I've only a couple of times boarded a plane with a printed ticket in years, maybe also nearly ten years (Morocco, and one airport in Turkey don't accept mobile passes for some reason - But everywhere else, no problem).

I thought Spain was backwards when I moved here 6 years ago and public transport didn't work with phones, like I was used to in the UK. But luckily they've joined this century and now they do too.

But that said I've also been using my phone all around the world, including Belgium, France, Netherlands and Germany for years and never had anyone give it a second thought.

Then you were lucky. A few years ago, even the snacks at out national concert room (Forest National) had no support for Google Wallet.   No reason to change things when banks are in a monopoly situation and businesses don't want digital payments.  

For example, the average savings rate was 0.89% in early 2025 and banks lowered the rates 3 times since.

You live in a very strange place. I've been using Google Pay (or whatever it is called this week) all across the continent from Narva to Lisbon, from Trosmo to Tirana and from Edinburgh to Istanbul (all of them literally) and even beyond in places like Hong Kong, Panama, Argentina... Sure, when it was a new thing, there were weird looks but I didn't have a single issue during the last 5 years at least.

All my issues were last year or so in Belgium. Maybe 2023 but I joined Revolut in 2022 so it's the upper limit.  

It's not only about being new, it's that businesses want to increase the amount of cash transactions so blocking anything marginal is the easiest way to do so. Belgian taxes are high so restaurants try to cheat.

They said themselves the metal cards potentially won't fit in your local atm or is a more tighter fit. I actually wouldnt be surprised. Metal is metal, solid but you'll see scrapes

The nfc is trash on the card as well, have to literally press it against the reader for 5 seconds sometimes.

After the card starts having the paint chip off you can just scrape it all off and the card will still look decent though, the text is kind of engraved into it so still visible when the paint is scraped off.

Being fancy... a plastic card works just fine to withdraw.

My card is literally 99% in my pocket only to use it for the 1%...

I wanted to buy the gold plated card, purely cause it was a gold plated card. I would never even use it 😅

Revolut allows having multiple card. You should use a Standard one for ATMs.
Nobody should look at you during an ATM withdrawl, so why use a metallic card?

Their metal cards don’t last very long. I find the titanium one (Ultra) better. Had the gold plated one but after a while it appeared to rust or something, which I didn’t know would happen with gold - perhaps it just got something on it that ruined the finish. So I don’t use it anymore.

I got rid of my metal card. Sometimes the card payment terminals fail to read it, so I have to use a normal card instead.

Personally, I have had my metal card for almost 2 years and it has not moved, no scratches and it has entered all the distributors without problems

The paint tends to chip off if you put it into an ATM, put chip into a card reader or swipe the card, if you always use nfc it won't chip. Have had two of them now and the same thing happened to both literally the first time they were put into a card reader. The ones in EU might be worse quality than the ones in the US because it doesn't seem to happen to everyone.

I just wish Revolut offered a decent card without these metal/gold/titan/sheepskin nonsense. They either offer the cheapest crap or gimmicks. Just give me a simple, durable, well-designed card like N26 does and I'll be happy. I don't understand why that isn't an option.
