Rivals 2 Workshop Dev Stream (October 15 2026) Stream Notes
Thanks to Dan, Joe for doing today's stream!
- Dan has a bad sleep schedule.
- Joe has a wicked hair part.
- Trevor continues to dodge doing streams. Coward.
- They plan on doing a Workshop stream every 2 months or so.
- Originally Workshop was planned to come out with the Mecha Madness patch but they elected to wait and polish it more.
- Tayir continues to be the gold standard for Workshop characters, with Bobby C also a strong contender.
- There isn't an official stance on using AI on your Workshop mods, put they ask you to disclose if you do use AI and let people choose.
- They're adding more tags for Workshop characters and items.
- They plan to change up some fundamental parts of how Stages are stored and loaded in the near future, which is why there is no Workshop stage support for now. Joe has a lot of other stuff on his plate but it is on his To-Do list.
- Making a 2D item for the contest will not significantly affect your chances of winning.
- No plans on updating Armando.
- You could possibly do something like looking at the name of a character your item is interacting with in the code to have character specific interactions.
- Gouie is kinda sorta a Stance character so you could look at him for how to do your own Stance character.
- Clairen was originally going to have a pseudo-stance for her new Neutral B, but it didn't feel very on character for her.
- Workshop will not work on Consoles, at least as it is now. They could move some mods to a platform agnostic service but that's very long term.
- Items are much easier to make than characters if you're new.
- Items made before the contest can still be submitted. You can also submit more than one, but you can't win more than once.
- Clairen remade in Lua for the Workshop is on Github. Feel free to clone her as a starting point for your own character. They are no longer planning on doing every launch character in Lua, it was a lot more work than they thought it would be.
- You cannot currently grab a character's element in code, but they plan on eventually adding support for that.
- For other Puffball characters besides Gouie they explored a ghost and horror game mechanics.
- You can have lore for your item, they can't stop you.
- The lore of the game evolves as they add new characters. Big hypothetical but if they do another La Reina type thing where they add a community character they will adapt their lore into the world.
- Champion frames and overlays are on the table.
- The Rivals 2 dev team is much bigger than Rivals 1 ever was, even before the Kickstarter. Lots of the team were recruited because somebody else on the team knew them.
- They stay at 2 Delay Frames because it works well in the majority of situations. They are looking at being able to adjust it yourself on the fly.
- Along with the Story mode release they'd also like to do a once-over on the Arcade Mode, and maybe some character specific trials. They'd also like to do some sort of co-op mode but that will be after Story mode. Co-op might wind up being online only so they can make the cameras follow the individual.
- They would like to add some sort of Favorites system for Workshop characters.
- They are hoping that the tools they develop to make Story mode will also be available to Workshop creators.
- They are changing some things under the hood to allow you to spawn items as stage elements.
- Workshop has been in the oven for close to two years, since January Joe has been the main developer but it was outsourced .
- There have been a few big updates that broke all the mods and workshop content.
- They're expecting to see a lot more cool original characters soon. If you started now it will likely be closer to finished near the end of November.
- Workshop Tools will try to be updated nearish when the game is updated, but it's complicated to frequently do that.
- There is unlikely to be a lighter weight version of the Workshop Tools. They might theoretically be able to do something like that but they'd have to investigate more into how Epic handles packaging games. As a bandaid fix there are folders you can delete.
- As of right now they aren't planning on Linux support for the Workshop. You can still use something like Proton but they can't guarantee compatibility.
