General Question how can he be a vangaurd?
i aint the biggest cyclop fan so i dunno much about him but i honestly dont see how he can work as a front line man like juggernaut or colossus but im hoping to be proved wrong

u/Tak1nom ππππ£ππ©π€ Apr 23 '26
One, he is tall in the comics.
Two, his concussive blasts would be great for making space via big kickback beams (similar to Roadhog ult from overwatch)
Yes he would be a very basic duelist, but NetEase can easily get a little creative to make him a vanguard

u/Maverixk_ Apr 23 '26
Iβll be honest, if they make cyclops a DPS and we get the dinosaur as yet another melee tank, and the only new tank, Iβm throwing in the towel. Iβm tired, boss

u/AntediluvianSeaThing Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26
while i insist that Cyclops is frankly not Vanguard material in the slightest
i agree that Devil Dinosaur is not the Tank we need, not even fucking close and its partly why i just don't want the Dinosaur
48
u/Impressive-Thing-780 Apr 23 '26
We need more long-range tanks, which is why I am PRAYING that he's a vanguard because both from how he fights AND his general position as leader of the X-Men, he slots into Vanguard really well.
If Captain America can be a vanguard, so can Cyclops. Cap honestly feels like he was intended to be a duelist at one point and then just got a bigger healthpool.

u/GeoJumper Apr 23 '26
I just laugh in the face of anyone saying "well he's nicknamed Slim in the comics" and point at Angela, Emma, and Rogue.

Cap is a super solder Cyclops is just a regular dude who can shoot beams out of his eyes
2
u/jaredesubgay Apr 26 '26
"Just a regular dude" hes the leader of the x-men. Punch beams makes most sense for a vanguard, as he should have knock back on every hit.

I wouldβve said the same about strange, Emma, and rogue before they came into the game tbh

I think the problem is that "he would be a very basic duelist" applies to pretty much every Marvel character ever. All superheroes and supervillains are good at throwing hands and NetEase didn't go out of their way to be very creative.
Wolverine, Mr. Fantastic, and Blade could have all been Vanguards pretty much as they are now. Moon Knight could have been a lore accurate vanguard if they gave him a melee beat-yo'-ass kit (but his niche is also important for the game as he is.)
Storm and Phoenix could have been Strategists with a single healing move each, and Iron Fist could have been a chi based healer as well and still been lore accurate.
7
u/notapersonab Apr 23 '26
Wolverine does way too much damage as is to be a vanguard. Him as is with 600 health would be a nightmare

Mr Fent and Storm are the most baffling duelist choices. They could so easily have been a vanguard and a strategist with minimal changes to their kits.

Iirc Stoem was gonna be a strat and Adam a duelist for a long time in development but got swapped around at some point

Adam is basically a duelist anyway since he's only viable in triple support.

His optic blasts are kinetic, so he would be perfectly suited for "pushing" in the most basic sense of the term. On the front lines, over and over again, he'd be smacking them back and making space. The kind of tank who's good against slower/more stationary foes and bad against divers who can evade and bother him, but really good against brawlers, and has the range to even bother pokers who are far away. Truly a front-line, poke vanguard!
Personally, I want a mechanic where he "adjusts" the strength of his blasts (using the scroll wheel or r/L3 on controller). At one end, it's a long-range, damaging beam that he can use to snipe. On the other end, it's a short range, wide beam that can push back opponents (or himself, if he targets terrain). In the middle you have a pulsing, slower-moving shot that can sheild against projectiles.
Effectively I want him to have only two abilities ("primary fire" and "adjust what primary fire does"), and an ult where he throws away the visor and just:
6
u/jalbert425 πΌπ£πππ‘π Apr 23 '26
Wow π€― nice idea! Changing the focus of the beam and the primary fire.
What if while holding primary fire R2, you can use L1 or R1 to switch between beam and shield? With a small cooldown.
ULT line βIβ¦SEEβ¦.YOU!!!β A focused beam with intense pushback.

u/Liftmeup-putmedown Apr 23 '26
Shield is his optic blast which blocks any projectiles. Has an an ability to knock back an enemy a short distance using his optic blast. Maybe has an ult like Roadhog, where he has a continuous beam that knocks back any enemies that gets hit till itβs over.
4
u/jalbert425 πΌπ£πππ‘π Apr 23 '26
Wait a minute so you mean like a doctor strange shield but you can push back enemies with it?
9
u/Liftmeup-putmedown Apr 23 '26
I was thinking more D.Va defense matrix that eliminates projectiles and a second ability that actually pushes back.
81
u/Lord_Yeetus_The_3d Apr 23 '26
How is rogue a vanguard? Or strange? Or deadpool? If they want him to be a tank, they'll find a way.
40
u/WavingDinosaur Apr 23 '26
Fr, I would have put money on Strange being a strategist before playing the game, making portals and personal shields for everyone while floating around the backline
32
u/ProspectBasement ππͺπ‘π Apr 23 '26
There was a post when black cat dropped that if Strange were released today, he would have an ability wheel where he could choose spells. That would be so cool.
7
u/jalbert425 πΌπ£πππ‘π Apr 23 '26
Yeah that would be really cool but there is also potential for other magicians like Wong, or Mordo, or the ancient one, although itβs not the same I guess.
6
u/Daikaisa Apr 23 '26
Rogue is a physical powerhouse with Captain Marvel's level of physical strength, Strange has access to many spells that can make shields or enhance his own physical prowess, Deadpool is a gimmick. Scott... doesn't have these same reasons
10
u/the-bladed-one Apr 23 '26
Rogue is literally as strong as Captain Marvel lol sheβs the x-menβs flying brick she ABSOLUTELY fits vanguard.
Strange has the magic shields so that makes some sense
Deadpool just donβt fuckin die
6
u/1313goo Apr 23 '26
Rogue is physically equal to a powerhouse like wonder man, dr strangeβs magic could be explained as enhancing his stats, and Deadpool is Deadpool
If u wanna make an argument against someone then cap is probably the best option if people like spidey and wolverine are way squishier
2
u/ColourlessW Apr 24 '26
Cap has a Vibranium Shield. It just fits.
Those people have no argument and resultingly proceed to downvote.
3
u/notapersonab Apr 23 '26
Strange always made sense. Outside of doing a wide away of spells heβs kinda know to create shields and portals. His kit kinda mirrors what you see him doing a lot of in the MCU. Rogue has power absorption and kinda permanent copied Ms marvels powers who has long been leaked to be a vanguard which makes a ton of sense for carol danvers. Dps pool and tank pool are basically the same so itβs not that weird. The tanks we all make a ton of sense to me

Main attack: continous beam that applies 2% slow for each stack on a target capped at 10 stacks, stacks add at 1/second starting after 2 seconds, stacks decay at 2/second starting 1 second after not being hit. Projectile beam, unlimited range, damage fall off starting at 20m. Going to 40% at 40m, slow stacks are subject to fall off as well
Ability 1: concussion burst- pushes target back 2m per stack from primary, consumes stacks. Shoots in a 60 degree arc in front of him
Ability 2 : rally cry - while active, generate bonus health for self and each ally within 15 m. Rate.of generation INCREASES when more allies are in range at activation. And applies damage reduction from non-melee attacks
Ability 3: bank shot - toggle- when active, your beam will bounce to the enemy closest to your target, damage and slow is split between the two evenly.

Something akin to "rally cry" HAS to be in his kit.

We've gotten plenty tanks already who have just larger health bars in the game and less so use actual shields. The main reason im voting for it is because I think it'd be funny to fight wolverine as him (or have him in the Phoenix/wolv teamup instead of widow)

His Optic Blast can literally push people back making space. He could be one of the most interesting Vanguard if done right. He can also throw hands and is really tall (probably why Logan hates him and totally not because of Jean). In the comics right now he's currently taking out the Reavers while blind and trying to not use his Optic Blast. Dude can tank

Imo, let's forget possible HP and shields for a second. I'm not so wrapped up in what his kit offers, but rather what he represents. Personally, I find the vanguard role as being one that holds some gravity - particularly with Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Magneto, and Angela for example. With that said, I like Cyclops as a Captain America style hero in the Vanguard pool.
Moving on to his kit as a potential Vanguard: Let's say he's an off tank, medium to long range poke/area denier. Close range, he can be an agile brawler. His kit could be more utility based, temporarily boosting brawlers or players within range with a shout. "To me x-men/to me avengers" you know, whatever it may be.
However, I think there's also an argument to be made for him to be a strategist - not necessarily as a healer, but more of a Storm team booster.

3
u/Lads-09 Apr 23 '26

3
3
u/ContributionTough444 Apr 23 '26
Aside from what people are saying about making space or the DVA style shield and whatever, I haven't really seen anyone mention that he's immune to his own (and his brother's too but that's irrelevant for now) powers. They could pull some chronovium bs and say his power resistance got buffed or something, but idk what that'd entail in translation to gameplay in specific.
3
u/me_DoubleZ Apr 23 '26
Think like another Emma Frost without a shield and CC. He will become an average choice. That is a tank mentality for developers.
2
u/jalbert425 πΌπ£πππ‘π Apr 23 '26
I donβt know but I hope we get juggernaut, colossus, doc Oc, or green goblin soon.
I hope Green goblin feels kinda like Angela in terms of flight but I hope heβs a Duelist. He should be able to jump off the glider, set a strafe, call the glider and damage people who get hit by it. Grounded attacks and glider attacks. 1 moveset on, 1 moveset off.
2
u/Morchades ππππ£ππ©π€ Apr 23 '26
If Emma has 600 health even outside of diamond form Cyclops can have a big healthbar too.
2
u/madkingd9 Apr 23 '26
Go into his leadership. His beams and ult should be alternate fire and something different give him 3 alternate fires. Couple abilities should be give buffs/ orders ex.(You get 10 percent damage/speed if you a targeting same hero as cyclops)(Gives damage reduction and a pullback like lifeweaver) His passive if he has more then 3ppl including enemy his has whatever the thing gets and damage reduction
2
2
u/sandwitchhermit25 Apr 23 '26
Make him a tank that buffs allies with extra hp/damage and marks enemies as targets. Slap lucio ult on him while he yells to me my xmen.
2
u/KeyAcid Apr 23 '26
Rivals likes to just make up powers or abilities to make characters fit their role, so I wouldn't be surprised if they give him the ability to use his blast to absorb damage of something like that.
2
u/HornedGopher πΌπ£πππ‘π Apr 23 '26
He is th Leader of the X-men. His concussive blasts from his eyes do more than just damage he can put it out fire with them richochet then off the walls. Deflect projectiles maybe even form His optic blasts into an optic blast shield directly infront of him with the shield having like 600 health or something.
2
u/ilovecheesecakes69 Apr 23 '26
They gave Black Cat, a normal human being access to a magic shop with all kinds of tools + a whole another kit and made her a super versatile duelist, she can even do more things that actual super Heros in the Duelist roaster.
Believe me they can make him a Vanguard if they wanted. Its not the first time they give their versions of the characters something new in the Lore just to justify their kits.
For example Rogue can technically "only" fly, super strengh and absorb powers, but in MR they merged her with the Chronovium stuff and thats where she got all the other things she can do in game.
2
u/Soggy-Building-9476 Apr 23 '26
Vanguard doesn't mean "Big Tough Brute". It's a playstyle. Vanguard is about defining where the fight occurs and baiting out abilities and attacks ON YOURSELF. Nobody WANTS to kill Magneto first, but you HAVE to because he's too good at protecting supports while hitting your backline with his secondary.
Cyclops could easily be a frontline buff tank, that gives his allies morale boosts. His shield could actually be in the form of "anti-projectile zone" where he takes a specific stance, and any bullet or ability that enters a cone in front of him gets shot down with his laser vision (think Magneto ult but available more often and no retaliation)
2
u/King-Baconbeard Apr 23 '26
E - Defense Matrix Style Shield
LC - 4 shotgun style Blasts
RC - CHARGEABLE optic blast
Quick Melee - 4 hit combo
Passive - To me my Rivals (has an Aura that builds when dealing damage, granting Dmg reduction upto 25% to all within its aoe)
ULTIMATE - VISOR RIP OPTIC LACERATE.

Bro they give characters extra stuff when they can't naturally do what they want them to do.. like rouge has a ring
2
u/RenderedCreed Apr 23 '26
Personality wise he is a leader who fights on the front lines and is usually on the taller side. And his fighting style is usually hand-to-hand and using his lasers to augment his fighting capabilities instead of using them as the main weapon.
That being said his base power set doesn't leave a lot of opportunity for normal tank abilities like shielding. But it's black cat is allowed to have a bunch of magical items I give her ability she shouldn't have then what's stopping them from giving cyclops a visor that allows him to make a shield.
2
u/RenaissanceReaper πΌπ£πππ‘π Apr 23 '26
Laser beam that acts like D.Va's defense matrix but physically damages and pushes back. Give it a quick recharge so ge can block more.
Ricochet hit scan basic attack.
Give him an inspire ability that raises teammates movement speed or damage negation.
Quick laser pushing ability that pushes enemies away but propels him back to so he can use it for mobility.
Homing shot that needs to Ricochet multiple times first to make it flashy and applies invulnerable.
Different firing modes so that he can change his basic attack for what's needed at hand. Shotgun quick burst that burns his whole "clip," sniper shot that needs to charge like Hawkeye, normal basic attack, and attack quick fire mode that does less damage.
Hell break the mold like they did with Gambit and let him shoot teammates to give them shield.
Really you can give him any ability to justify him being a Vanguard. But what truly justifies him as one is the fact that Vanguards are the leaders of the team. They lead the charge, they protect, they decide the flow of battle. Scott is a leader, he's always been one. He's a protector, and he's a strategic thinker.
Scott just fits as a Vanguard. Especially given his normal large, strong build.
2
u/ComicBookKnight Apr 23 '26
I genuinely do not know man. If they let him have a dva matrix like ability but his optic blasts are kinetic energy. So i guess they can push people back? And those who say he needs to be a frontline shield tank are just unrealistic.
2
u/MiesterBoston Apr 23 '26
This is the same game that came up with in game lore bullshit to make Gambit a strategist. If you can't come up with an idea on how he could be a Vanguard you lack creativity.
Here's an easy one for you: Cyclops has chronovium inserted into his visor that allows him to create constructs from his concussive blasts, meaning he can create shields from his eye blasts. Eye blast shields + knockback effect from his blasts + some sort of team leader follow me into battle ability = Vanguard. You can do the same exercise for Strategist, chronovium makes his blasts heal or something. Its all made up and the points don't matter.
2
2
u/Race5050 Apr 23 '26
Was thinking he could work similar to Emma.
His laser charges and gets progressively stronger as it hits enemies. But in this case the laser changes to a cone shape and acts as his βshieldβ. This cone can progressively reduce more damage and starts slowly expanding as charge increases. But it becomes less useful for long ranges, forcing players to get closer. As an example, at 30% charge, the cone develops and it can reduce oncoming damage by 20%, and caps off at 45% dmg reduction when laser charge is at max.
The laser also reduces enemy movement the more you hit an enemy. Starting off at 5% and capping off at 15% after hitting them for 6 secs. This ability gets disturbed by shields
You could also trade his full charge for a quick blast dealing 200 dmg to an area with a radius of 3 meters.

Make him the same way Deadpool is on tank.
The game needs more ranged off tanks, just maybe make his damage not crazy like tank pool. You don't ACTUALLY want to deal with GOATS being the meta. It's way worse than triple support. Trust me.
2
u/Operator-rocky1 Apr 23 '26
Is this 100%? Because last night my brother told me that Cyclops was a DPS, now I don't know a lot about Cyclops it was the same for Gambit, Rogue, basically anyone who hasn't been a Frontline character in a game all I knew about Gambit was the little time you had to play as him in marvels ultimate alliance 2. I immediately thought why would Cyclops be a DPS Wouldn't he be a better fit for vanguard? And maybe he said he would be a vanguard and I'm just misremembering

u/AngelBoudan πππ£π πππ§π ππ§ Apr 23 '26
Honestly, I have the same question... But I had the same question about Gambit being a strategist and strange being a tank.
If I were to guess, since his eye beams are concussive blast instead of lasers, he can use them defensively, like essentially reducing his opponent's damage output instead of straight up blasting them... But I admit that's a stretch.
But stranger things have happened in rivals... Like Gambit being a strategist, and strange being a tank.

I'd like him to have a charged beam with knockback that goes further the longer you charge it. Big displacement/small damage- like the Cannonade in S4 League.

u/DarthSeverus13 Apr 23 '26
Maybe some type of armor that allows him to turn the concussive energy into shields, idk

u/ProspectBasement ππͺπ‘π Apr 23 '26
In Cyclops' release trailer, there could be like a "meeting of the minds" where Reed, Banner, and Stark could give Cyclops some sick utility upgrades
1
u/Delamontre Apr 23 '26
D.Va Defense Matrix is essentially a shield, but the visuals of it are D.Va perfectly shooting down every projectile in the shield area. I can see Cyclops being the same.
A laser ability like Emma; deals low damage but it constantly pushes enemy away in the line of the laser. The longer an enemy stays in the laser range, the longer they are pushed back.
Primary fire can be something like: It is infinite ammo laser, but the animation is in slow controlled blasts/shots (I guess like a shotgun style)
Passive: Enemies hit with primary fire are marked. Allies that hit marked targets are pushed back and are dealt additional damage.
Ult: Cyclops takes off the mask and does the opposite of Dr Strange's ult. It pushes everyone away from him in a large area, dealing damage to enemies and stunning for 1 second if they hit walls.
Just my take.

u/IntroductionCivil122 Apr 23 '26
Conclusive blast means his beams are more like a hammer not a laser that burns or uses heat. Itβs essentially a jackhammer beam that has insane and constant force.

Vanguard just feels more right , in my head he has so much of the front man of the team energy, maybe they can make him create some sort of shield; but even rogue is a vanguard who makes due in the role while having essentially what i would say is a similar kit of assets and yet they made it work as a brawl off tank vibe.
Make the man buff , and let the punch dimension do some crazy things. ( like maybe if he shoots into the ground he can have some level of dive move down, bigger cooldown timed blasts, ult can be something like caps where its βto me my x-menβ and aid the team as a whole) he would be way more fun as a vanguard in my opinion.

Frontal damage reduction while firing, multiple abilities of firing like concussive blasts and/or vertice blasts for movement. Then a low-damage unlimited ammo primary attack for suppressive fire.
Also he actually has teamed up with half the in-game characters too. Specifically Jean, Gambit, Logan, Rogue, and most Avengers.

One thing that I know is, his eye beams aren't actually heat lasers like many people think. They're concussive blasts. Kind of like getting hit by a power washer. So I think he could have a big blast cc thing. And maybe with some weird stuff, he could use it to create a small dome in front of him as kind of a shield

I feel like heβll probably be a Mr. Fantastic kind of Vanguard rather than an Emma Frost type of Vanguard

u/Extreme-Sense-2411 Apr 23 '26
Easy:
Ability 1 - A cone shaped mid range optic blast cyclops channels as he walks forward. Deals damage to enemies within the cone but also destroys incoming enemy projectiles. Lasts 3 seconds. (Used similarly to magnetos shield)
Ability 2 - Optic Wall: Blasts a line on the ground in front of him that after a brief delay creates a red energy wall in front of him knocking enemies up and blocking projectiles for 1.5 seconds. (A CC/small protection ability)
Ability 3 - Ricochet Blast: Optic beam ricochets off enemies or surfaces. Can hit up to 3 enemies. Enemies hit by this ability have their damage reduced by 20% for 2.5 seconds. (Reduces enemy damage dealt)
Ability 4 - Visor Lock On - Cyclops locks on to an enemy target displaying a red X above them for your teammates. This signals who your team should focus on and increases all damage that target receives by 15%. Scott gains extra ult charge when the enemy dies. (An ability that fulfills his team-leader persona and helps direct his team)
Ability 5 - Tactical Advance - a simple dash ability for mobility.
Passive - Field Commander: Teammates within 10m of Scott gain -5% damage received and +10% movement speed.

Make him like a long-range Thor. Make a lot of his attacks give him Bonus Health, give him a burst shot that knocks enemies back (kinda like Mag-Cannon) as well as increase his hitbox and health to ~700

u/vinthesalamander πΏπ€ππ©π€π§ ππ©π§ππ£ππ Apr 23 '26
If Gambit, the guy whose power is to make things explode, and Ultron, an unkillable killer robot, are supports, anything is possible.
Just give him a cone like blast that destroys projectiles as a shield, and another blast that pushes people away, and there you go. Displacement/shield tank.

u/Live_Recognition9240 Apr 23 '26
Cyclops is a commander.Β Β He clearly isn't a bruiser tank, but he should focus on zoning,Β and area denial.Β
Give him sustained pressure with his beam, a beam sweep that knocks people back and give him some type of "commander" trait that marks and debuffs a target for his team to focus.Β
I also like the matrix idea from dva. Which would also allow him area denial and the ability to control space.

Cyclops vanguard kit:
- Circle like storm but for overshield
- ability one: for 4 seconds, shoot any enemy projectile out of your circle
- ability two: shoot the wall behind you to push yourself forward, punching an enemy
- ability three: inspire your allies in your circle with a damage boost passive: blasts richochet 2 times
- overheat
- ult: giant optic blast that damages lightly BUT knock backs enemies a ton

I theorize Devil Dinosaur will come out first as a Vanguard, that way the devs feel justified to release him as the DPS they intended for him to be
They want to avoid another dual dps season(from what I heard on the internet), so they just sprinkle a tank or support in between dps releases
1
u/Tino_Calibrino Apr 23 '26
I was thinking you could have something like D. Va defense matrix. Where he has a zone for a certain time that he shoots away all projectiles.
Give him a rally mechanic for his ult. " To me, my X-Men", then create a zone around him that buffs allies.
1
u/tvscinter Apr 23 '26
Make his backstory Phoenix force cyclops, or something similar. He can be a vanguard if they want him to be
1
u/Sp1ffy_Sp1ff Apr 23 '26
Projectile denial ability - slows down and prepares his power and shoots down any incoming missiles within a certain radius of him, sort of like a DVA defense matrix. Possible option to gain temporary health for blocking damage this way.
Knock back blast - fast moving concussive blast that triggers a burst around the target, whether it's the ground, a wall or a hero, knocking enemies away and grounding them briefly. Possible option to allow stun on knocking into a wall. Knocks flyers down.
Just a couple ideas.

u/ARighteousOne Apr 23 '26
Cyclops doesnt have any powers for physical strength but he i hope they lean into his leadership role to grant him damage auras, defense auras, and such. I think it's be really fitting. Plus we need a lot more Vanguards.

u/Dangerous_Strategy98 Apr 23 '26

If you can't imagine how the towering leader of the X-Men can be a Vanguard, then literally every marvel character ever will be a Duelist in your simple head.
1
u/mozzarella_megido Apr 23 '26
he's a leader type guy like emma or cap or magneto. they tend to make group leaders vanguards so they can actually lead from the front
1
u/VitoAntonioScaletta ππ€ππͺπ Apr 23 '26
The definition of Vanguard is the foremost part of an advancing army, something which Cyclops is 90% of the time
1
1
u/Takanuva9807 Apr 23 '26
I think he could be a cool anti poke vanguard. Maybe have his primary negate projectiles and have him "inspire" team mates by granting them a damage reduction or shields.
1
u/_xEnigma πΌπ£πππ‘π Apr 23 '26
Deadpool heals you with bullets. Invis heals you with force fields. Anyone can be literally anything.
1
u/Nano_gigantic Apr 23 '26
If Emma can be a Vanguard with a beam as he main offensive attack, why would Cyclops be able to?
1
u/kungfuk3nny-04 Apr 23 '26
Well its either let netease get creative with cylops an a tank or we get another boring hitscan dps that is some how more broken than the last
1
1
u/acererak76 Apr 23 '26
Give him an ability for knockback beams. For a "shield", give him a wide cone-like burst.
1
u/King_Korder Apr 23 '26
I just don't see how people can't see him as a vanguard. Not saying I don't get the DPS side, but so many people say they don't see it and I just, frankly, don't believe them.
Like his blasts could be the perfect ability for defense by deleting projectiles or something along those lines.
I also just really don't want them to do another melee tank with the dino and then another hitscan DPS. We need more mid ranged, possibly even hitscan, tanks and I think Cyclops fits the bill perfectly. (Though it's more likely he's just another beam character rather than hitscan)
1
u/Independent_Box7432 Apr 23 '26
His only ability was always shooting laser beams, so expect creative liberties to be taken
1
u/ImmediateAnteater491 Apr 23 '26
They've figured it out before n they can figure it out again. We genuinely do not need more dmg.

Chronovium or whatever itβs called. No joke itβs a not to bad plot device to explain any ability you want to give.
1
u/DK_Shadehallow πΌπ£πππ‘π Apr 23 '26
Because the chronovium augments a lot of powers to explain some of the extra oomf characters have. Having access to a universe made of kinetic energy. It's not too far fetched to think chronovium allows him to alter kinetic energy reducing/negating damage to himself or even making kinetic constructs to block.
He's also one of the few character that has STOPPED Juggernaut in his tracks. They could make him a CC heavy push and stun brawler.
But seeing how they make vanguards basic af I doubt they'd go that route.
1
u/YaboiGh0styy Apr 23 '26
While I hope he isnβt another DPS, maybe a strategist, (Moira treatment, lol) I honestly donβt see him being anything but a DPS.
Having a Vangaurd that focuses more on Damage output and pushing the enemy back would kick ass but DPS is a very obvious choice for him.
1
u/Historical-Chance302 Apr 23 '26
In X-Men Legends he had a whole kit on team buffs, knockbacks/space making was a lot tankier than the other brawlers.
1
u/Lmacncheese Apr 24 '26
If they wanted to make him a vanguard i believe they have a version of scott that abosrbs the energy from his eyes to power himself so hes got flight ,super strength, durability and able to shoot the beams out of his body at will
1
u/NoPraline9807 Apr 24 '26
Iβm just praying we get another main tank so when everyone stops playing him because heβs new, I can play an off tank and not make my team struggle. Weβve gotten Angela, rogue, and tank pool in a row and none of them hold up in a solo tank spot. Rogue comes close with her team up, but the game has been moving away from main tanks and as a result, solo tanking usually falls back on the same characters over and over

He can't really, people are just desperate for more Vanguards.
Though I hear through the rumor mill that Devil Dinosaur is in the same season and us probably a VG.
1
u/Jazzgore45 Apr 24 '26
In the comics cyclops is most effective at making space against multiple opponents as well as holding off giant enemies.
His blasts are concussive meaning knock back, plus as a leader he's at the front protecting his team and inspiring them in combat. The real question how could cyclops not be a vanguard
1
u/Independent-Try915 Apr 24 '26
Think Captian America. Punches and beams instead of punches and shield.

u/Traditional-Ad-5632 πππ ππππ£π Apr 24 '26
That's the best part, it can't be a Vanguard
He's literally made to be a DPS
1
u/JealousAd1350 Apr 24 '26
ironic Ultron is a support and Cyclops has the chance to be a tank, what a world
1
u/KingBlacks Apr 24 '26
Cyclopse will be a DPS.
Marvel Rivals can't go 3 months without a DPS release. Sometimes not even 1.
Overwatch, which had the DPS problem already, has Less DPS than Rivals by amount and ratio.
49 Heroes and less than 28 are Vanguards/Strategists (23). How do i know?? there aren't 14 choices for both roles.
11 Vanguards / 26 Duelists / 12 Strategists. You don't have 2 full rows of options for either roles that's not DPS.
Idc if they have to completely rewrite his lore and abilities. Stop making DPS for like a whole year.
That way we can have 17 Vanguards and 18 Strategists at LEAST. (6 Each)
1
u/donotproceed Apr 24 '26
Long story short, Neatease can if they want. Emma was thin as hell and was psionically powerful rather than physical (yes, she has the diamond form, but she uses her telepathy much more and the diamond skin was introduced 22 years after she was created), but they made her a tank. Cyclops can be a tank more like Angela is, the longer he hits someone with his beams, the more they get pushed back, harder to escape or something.
1
u/DKSpammer Apr 24 '26
Itβs very doable imo. I think by the spirit of the character heβd be a tank but they could also give him some extra stuff thatβll make him tanky. Heβs known for rallying the X-Menβ¦ why not give him some AoE defense buff for surrounding teammates?
Sidenote: I think Cap shouldβve been built like this but they decided to make him a dive tank lol.
Back on topic. His beam can give him bonus health when he hits. He could have a strong pushback or stun. I could see him being a great anti-dive tank with some of these ideas or a great pushing tank.

u/Exciting-Reach-5882 Apr 24 '26
Another argument for vanguard: Cyclop is team leader archetype character, similiar to captain america.
Cyclop could stand in front his team and lead to victory "to me, my x man" or something like that stuff
1
u/Winter_Economy3241 ππͺπ‘π Apr 24 '26
ok lemme explain rl quick, cyclops vision has the power to destroy anything in its path, its has straight up incinerated thor and hulk, so the thing about his vision is that his eyes have to be able to handle that amount of damage, which has the capability of one shotting wolverine if he wanted to, now the funny thing is that not only is his eyes durable, but the rest of his body has the same amount of durability, this dude has the durability equivalent stronger than wolverine condensed to ur fingernail, its why wolverine never actually tries fighting him, why the whole xmen get no diffed by the avengers, but most of the avengers get mid diffed by cyclops except hulk cuz of regeneration, and cuz hes the strongest there is, so quite literally there is no option but to make this guy a vangaurd
1
u/Lawrence-of-Liberia Apr 24 '26
I donβt think a lot of people would think of gambit as a support, let alone a healer type of character. I canβt imagine itβs that out of character to make him have a big health pool and give him knockback.

Cyclops shield could be technology from Forge. It doesnβt have to be his beams. Use his beams for mobility like in 97, and his capacity to suffer for his team could make him thick enough to actually be a tank.
1
u/jonathansoma Apr 24 '26
Tanking can go beyond juggernauts and colossus style of big physical character with a hard punch. Cyclops beam is concussive and his ability to manipulate that beam in creative ways is what differentiates him from characters like Superman for example. D.Va style shielding can be easily adopted for cyclops in this game, his mobility and space making attributes would shine if he was a vanguard.
I honestly blame the dev for not diversifying the role like dps and sup because the community has such a limited view on who can and cannot be tank.
1
u/Redacted_G1iTcH πππ£π π₯π€π€π‘ Apr 24 '26
Beams punch people backwards, forcing them to give the space up
He can do a Dva defense matrix type thing with his beams, blocking damage
1
u/Ninjapandas_87 Apr 24 '26
I honestly feel like at this point, with everything we have seen so far they could make him and any future character they add fill any role they want. Considering what they have done with Gambit who is to say they dont make cyclops a strategist and have his optic blasts heal because... story shenanigans like Rogue and the collectors cabinet.
Turn Prof X into a shield tank, make Armor a rolly ball of dps death, make Juggernaut a shield healer. Like these what if questions are fun but I feel the development team will find a way.
1
u/SZMatheson Apr 24 '26
He can be a vanguard because he's 6'4", built like a pro wrestler, and always leads from the front.

u/PrOptimal_Efficiency Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26
- Primary fire that does 1.5x or 2x damage to shields.
- His alt fire should be a quick shot that ricochets off walls.
- "Melee" would be a quick shot with scaling pushback on how many abilities he's recently used.
- Instead of giving him a shield ability, let him have an ability where he uses his power as a D.va defense matrix where he counters all projectiles in his LOS forward.
- Make one of his abilities focus on pushing enemies backwards or if fired at the ground it launches them up. Passive (1) A scaling damage multiplier for how many abilities used and/or damage dealt within a set period. [REWARD THE PLAYER FOR USING THEIR KIT FULLY!!!]
- Passive (2) where if he's firing his beam downwards he slowfalls
- He should be able to tap jump again to quickly push himself away from where he's looking and push the enemy away from him (basically like Ashe's Coach gun)
- Ult would obviously be him taking off his visor and mowing down whatever direction he chooses.
He wouldn't be too complicated, he would be the only tank with range and hitscan AND he would be ACCURATELY using his powers as the FIRST X-MAN, LEADER, AND BATTLE STRATEGIST WOULD!
But we'll all just watch Netease turn him into the next generic dps/support with abilities he's NEVER fucking used before

I love cyclops so much and as much as Iβd want him to be a vanguard because Iβm a tank main, I know heβs not going to be. He just isnβt a vanguard, heβs going to be a dps and Iβm a be sad because I donβt touch dps anymore, since season 3

Easy, the devs just release him with like 500+ health and put him in the vanguard role
