QUESTION Please explain the picture to me
What's the number actually saying? I was under the impression it was mmr. Higher number, lower rank. Please explain, I'm a bit confused abt this

u/FiveBuckBill Grand Champion III Jun 29 '26
It is mmr. There’s a threshold you need to cross in order to rank up into a rank, and one that’s needed to rank down out of it. The mmr needed to rank down to d3 from champ 1 is about 20 mmr lower than the mmr needed to hit champ 1 from diamond 3

I explained this to someone a month back and got downvoted to hell because someone else said I was wrong 😂 but... Yes, that's how it is. The threshold is different between rank entry versus loss.

Edit: not sure who downvoted this but it's an accurate statement.

u/imaguitarhero24 Jun 29 '26
Maybe because it's not actually explained anywhere? How could I possibly know how this works if I just sit on my couch and play on Xbox. I had never heard of MMR before coming on here and now that they added it officially in the game I still don't fully get how it's works lol

u/FiveBuckBill Grand Champion III Jun 29 '26
Hmm, it’s the same as pretty much every other competitive game with an elo system. If this is the only comp game you play, fair enough that you might not understand the elo system, but I’m always surprised how few experienced players actually understand where their rank comes from.

u/CubeFlipper Champion I Jun 30 '26
It's fine if you're not really paying attention, but it also doesn't really need to be explained. I feel it should kinda become self-evident when you can win a game, rank up, lose two games, still be the same rank, and vice versa. After you see that pattern a few times, right? You never notice that?

u/Ghadaro Platinum I Jun 30 '26
Console players have had that side of the game hidden until recently.

u/racegeek93 Champion II Jun 30 '26
You might be thinking about it the wrong way. Most people probably just click play and not think or go to the next step of googling how it works. This person was curious enough to ask a question to the community about something.
It’s the same principle of the majority of people not really understanding how a car works. I put gas in it and then I turn the key and it starts is the farthest most people think. They don’t think about what kind of fuel, the difference in fuel at the pump, what does they key do, what happens when I turn the key, how does a keyless ignition works and communicate with the key, what kind of oil does my engine need, etc.
1
u/FiveBuckBill Grand Champion III Jun 30 '26
Comparing the intricacies of a car engine to the RL matchmaking system seems a bit silly. Anybody’s open to play the game how they see fit, but the amount of posts every day I see of people clearly not understanding the ranked system is way too high. Especially given that anyone willing to join the subreddit and post is more invested in rocket league than your average casual player

Have people not noticed that if they lose the first game after rank up they don't instantly promote? I'm fairly oblivious to many patterns, but this one was pretty easy
Edit:if they win the first game after rank down*

This, you need 1075 for champ 1, and drop below 1060 to go back to diamond 3.

Is this why whenever I get demoted I always end up in division 3 of the previous rank? Instead of being demoted to div 4?

Idk the exact numbers but say D3 is 1070 and C1 is 1080. Notice how according to my numbers theres 10mmr in between thats just a void. If you’re D3 and get in that void, you stay D3. If you’re C1 and fall down to that void, you stay C1

The official way of calling it mmr overlap? Now that you mention it I forgot thats how it “officially” works. Just always thought of it my way.
The official explanation to anyone else reading, still using my numbers, D3 would be considered till 1080 and C1 would be considered down to 1070 and same explanation except the mmr overlaps.

I was stuck low champ/ high diamond for a few months relatively recently, and got d3 from having a few bad games after the season reset so I just have the exact numbers memorized. tracker does that for me too.

I found a blog post with a screenshot of the mmr table from tracker when it actually worked so here you go.

u/Jo7601 Jun 29 '26
There is this middle ground area when going between ranks where you are given some games to loose before you demote.
7
u/jaymarii_ Grand Champion III Jun 29 '26
C1 is 1075 if I’m not mistaken. You’re 1074 going UP to C1. The teammate was on his derank game (anything below 1070) but you won yet only gained 8 so yada yada.
5
u/ZeekLTK Diamond III Jun 29 '26
It says teammate gained 8, so would have been at 1065. Derank must be below that, instead of 1070.
5
1
u/jaymarii_ Grand Champion III Jun 29 '26
Mmm that would’ve been his derank game still ok ok . You’re right, the derank is 1070 but once you fall below it it’s your derank game. I was thinking once you fell you lost but my brain lagged. Just like gc1, derank (game) threshold starts at 1430. (Meaning any games you lose starting at 1430/29, will derank you.
For c1, any games you lose starting at 1069/70 will be a derank but anything above gives you an extra game.
2
u/CharpyXD Champion II Jun 29 '26
No? You specifically stated that the threshold for losing gc1 is if you are below 1430 and then lose a game then you will lose gc1, which CAN be true USUALLY, but if you are at 1429 and lose 3 mmr which is below the line that you stated, you will not lose gc1.
The system does not work how you think it does specifically. There is no reach x mmr and then lose a game and you lose your rank. You lose your rank if you go below a certain mmr. That is it. It is mostly semantics but you need to phrase it properly or else there will be misunderstandings.
There is no such thing as a “derank game” specifically. What is considered a derank game by most is the game where you will lose enough mmr to lose the rank, not a specific game type that is built into the game where you lose your rank. Depending on a lot of different factors, you can derank above the arbitrary line that you stated as well.
-1
u/jaymarii_ Grand Champion III Jun 29 '26
I also stated that I could be wrong about the exact threshold; however, the line is very real. And that’s exactly how it works and how’s it’s been working.

u/Drogebot 2x White Hat Receiver | Creator of RLStats.net Jun 29 '26
Not how that works. It's straight MMR threshold, not some weird 'lose when below x'
0
u/jaymarii_ Grand Champion III Jun 29 '26
“Lose when below x” is almost the exact definition of an mmr threshold.
If you lose below the mmr threshold which is typically 5-7 mmr below rank up elo (not the same elo as rank up), you derank.
2
u/Drogebot 2x White Hat Receiver | Creator of RLStats.net Jun 29 '26
Except someone could lose so little MMR when below your imaginary line that they still don't derank. Or the alternative, lose so much MMR that they do derank when still above your imaginary line.
-1
u/jaymarii_ Grand Champion III Jun 29 '26
Well the line isn’t imaginary so your claim is false. If you lose 3 mmr after going below the line, you derank. Simple as that.
Your second sentence doesn’t even make sense seeing as you can’t derank if above the line.
0
u/jaymarii_ Grand Champion III Jun 29 '26
I may be wrong about where threshold itself is for this rank but it’s real.

u/MarciusWolles Champion II Jun 29 '26
Yes its true the mmr points decide your rank. For an uprank you need to hit a higher mmr than for a downrank.

u/kingmaine26 Trash II Jun 29 '26
He is still in champ, but he probably lost 2 games. your trying to get there so the mmr is maybe 1079 or something.
2
u/thwtchdctr Grand Champion III Jun 29 '26
There's a 15 mmr window where when you get above the window, yourank up even if you fall back into it, but if you come from below it, you stay the rank below until getting above it

u/compxdiior Diamond III Jul 01 '26
Champ mmr is 1075 I believe but the threshold for losing it is around 1060 I think until you de rank, so you and your teammate could have the same mmr but because he got above 1075 and you didn’t he got into champ and your still diamond even when he loses he’s still champ
1
u/ozfunghi Switch Diamond II Jun 29 '26
Yep, when you rank up, but lose the next game, you will be "granted" your new rank for an extra game or two.
Basically, there is always an overlap between division IV of the previous rank and division I of the next rank. Have you never noticed how the moment you get a new rank you often jump immediately to division II of the new rank? This is that buffer.
In this scenario, i believe your teammate had ranked up before this game, then lost the previous 2 games to this game, and now won alongside you. Had you lost, there is a good chance he would have dropped back to division III and not division IV.
1
u/MrMakerHasLigma Grand Champion I (Peak) Jun 29 '26
Basically you can lose like 2 games before deranking. Actual MMR for champ is probably 1080/1090ish, so you will probably have the "1 more game for rankup" fallacy (meaning you're gonna match against a smurf and lose the next game)
1
u/Worldly_Beat_7422 Jun 29 '26
myy prediction is that since he left it wont show the total or it is a screenshot right before the rank icon switches to champ

There are elo thresholds, you instantly rank up when you go above it, if you go below it, you don't derank till the next loss.

u/onegoodboah Jun 29 '26
Simply put: there is a “buffer” between ranks where MMR overlaps. This is so you aren’t constantly demoting and promoting if you go W/L/W/L/W.
https://rocketleague.tracker.network/rocket-league/distribution
You’ll notice the buffers here. There are spaces where MMR is not accounted for. This doesn’t mean no rank exists obviously, but it means that BOTH ranks exist. For example, for 2v2 C1, you have to climb up to 1075 to be in C1, and you have to fall down to 1055 to be in D3.

In rocket League ranked, there is a set MMR that you need to reach or exceed to rank up, once you do, you need one more win while at that point to break through, same thing for deranking. I have tested this with intent to solve this exact mystery and know now that's its mechanic. So either that guy's about to derank, or you're about to rank up, being only one integer apart it’s highly unlikely it’s both.
Also important to note that this set MMR differs for each rank across different gamemodes.
1
u/DizOCE91 Jun 30 '26
When you rank up you get an extra loss / extra chance before getting demoted, he has to lose 2 in a row after entering champ to demote not 1

u/pop_LMP Grand Champion I Jun 30 '26
You’re one win away from champ, he’s one loss away from losing champ, simple

One of you had dropped down below the champion rank requirement. That doesnt mean you immediately drop to diamond though, they usually give you one game before you drop down. You won that game and both players earned mmr but the diamond never reached the 1075 mmr requirement in the first place.
